[Bug 2063298] [NEW] deprecate ubuntu-fan in Noble

2024-04-23 Thread Andrea Righi
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

In order to provide ubuntu-fan we need to maintain additional kernel
SAUCE patches that are currently conflicting with upstream code,
potentially breaking networking eBPF APIs.

To prevent such incompatibility the whole patch set requires a major
redesign.

However, after investigations and a detailed assessment we have not
found any relevant real-world use-case that still requuires ubuntu-fan,
as most of its features are now available in the upstream kernel and
user-space tools, using alternative solutions.

Moreover, maintaining ubuntu-fan is also slowing down / preventing the
development of other packages (see for example LP: #2051672).

Therefore, we are proposing to deprecate ubuntu-fan starting with noble.

[Test case]

We have ubuntu-fan test cases in our regression testing suite. Such
tests are expected to fail with the noble kernel, so we can hint/disable
them in Noble.

[Fix]

Drop (do not apply) the ubuntu-fan SAUCE patch set from the Ubuntu
kernel.

[Regression potential]

There are still some existing tools/systems that may still rely on
ubuntu-fan, so we may experience regressions when such systems are
moving to noble. However, the potential of breaking eBPF networking has
a much higher impact, so we can probably workaround any potential
ubuntu-fan regression using alternative upstream solutions.

[Bug 2062950] Re: RE: Flickering problems on external monitor with HDMI after installing Ubuntu 23.10

2024-04-23 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. I don't see any errors relevant to this bug, only bug 2034664
(which you should have the fix for already?) and bug 1857392.

Next please try deleting the monitor layout settings:

  rm ~/.config/monitors.xml

and then log in again. Does that improve the situation?

[Bug 2063291] Re: [SRU] Correctly map boot entry to OEM setup

2024-04-23 Thread Simon Quigley
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

Historically with Ubiquity-based live ISOs, a boot entry exists specific
for OEM configuration. This has become an expectation from an end-user
perspective, for installs dedicated to that purpose.

OEM mode is a feature that is now only present in Calamares-based ISOs,
with Ubuntu Desktop Installer-based ISOs having progress tracked in bug
2048473. Out of the three Calamares-based ISOs (Ubuntu Unity, Kubuntu,
and Lubuntu), only two of those (Kubuntu and Lubuntu) have dedicated
installer prompts to boot right into the installer, where Ubuntu Unity
simply has a desktop icon on first boot, which is the same as Lubuntu's
functionality from 18.10 to 23.10 in this respect.

Kubuntu has an OEM boot entry enabled, but the installer prompt does
nothing with the additional kernel parameter provided (oem-
config/enable=true). Lubuntu does not have an OEM boot entry enabled
(which will require a debian-cd merge proposal), and also does not have
this logic in the installer prompt. Both installer prompts need simple
  support.

  [ Test Plan ]

   1. Boot a Noble daily ISO or 24.04.1, if already released, for Lubuntu and
Kubuntu.
   2. Select the following boot entry: "OEM install (for manufacturers)"
   3. After system boot, Calamares in OEM mode is shown.

[ Where problems could occur ]

When updating Calamares itself in a future update, care must be taken to
ensure OEM mode continues to work as designed. An underlying regression
in Calamares has the potential to break the functionality of this
  update.

Additionally, if debian-cd changes in a non-backwards-compatible way for
- Noble, this could also break changes.
+ Noble, this could also break the functionality of this update.

  [ Other Info ]

Acceptance of these updates into -proposed must be done after the linked
  debian-cd MP is merged.

This is a release blocker for 24.04.1, not for 24.04 final.

[Bug 2063289] [NEW] Merge installer prompts for Calamares flavors

2024-04-23 Thread Simon Quigley
Public bug reported:

lubuntu-installer-prompt was written first as a simple prototype for a
"Try or Install" screen when booting the live Lubuntu ISO. This was
forked for Kubuntu, and two separate source packages have been
maintained with some code duplication.

These two binary packages need to be merged into one source package
during the OO cycle.

[Bug 1966911] Re: Cannot enroll finger on Jammy

2024-04-23 Thread Andy Chi
Hi William,
Typically, there are 2 types of fingerprint chips, one is called MOC, another
one is called MOH. MOH is under supported by libfprint from upstream, and MOC
needs Goodix to provide proprietary user space library. To be honest, I don't
know this device id belongs to which one. libfprint-2-tod1-goodix only supports
27c6:533C. I'm sorry there's nothing I can help here.

[Bug 2060268] Re: Phantom "Unknown Display" shown in Settings after installing the Nvidia driver

2024-04-23 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Summary changed:

- Phantom monitor (simpledrm) shown in Settings after installing the Nvidia
driver
+ Phantom "Unknown Display" shown in Settings after installing the Nvidia driver

** Description changed:

+ [ Impact ]
+
After installing Nvidia driver 545 on a single (27") monitor system,
Settings shows a phantom 46" monitor of the same resolution.

- It looks like the phantom monitor is /dev/dri/card0 which is still controlled
by simpledrm, while Nvidia uses /dev/dri/card1.
- ---
+ It looks like the phantom monitor is /dev/dri/card0 which is still
+ controlled by simpledrm, while Nvidia uses /dev/dri/card1.
+
+ [ Workaround ]
+
+ 1. sudo rm /dev/dri/card0
+ 2. Log in again.
+
+ [ Test Plan ]
+
+ Open Settings and verify the only monitors shown are your real monitors.
+
+ [ Where problems could occur ]
+
+ Removing the simpledrm card is only safe when it's not being used. If
+ somehow a machine wasn't using the installed Nvidia driver then there
+ could be a risk of deleting the only working display.

[Bug 1966911] Re: Cannot enroll finger on Jammy

2024-04-23 Thread W.C.
Hi Andy, Thanks for the great work. I also have the same problem. I have
a Huawei Matebook 14 2021 AMD, which has a Goodix fingerprint sensor
"5110", lsusb output as follows:

---
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 27c6:5110 Shenzhen Goodix Technology Co.,Ltd. Goodix
Fingerprint Device
---

So far I have searched everywhere and no luck yet. The closest I get is
this repo:

https://github.com/goodix-fp-linux-dev/goodix-fp-dump

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libfprint/wiki/-/wikis/Devices/27c6:5110

Some work has already been done on this module but so far nothing
conclusional. I am wondering if there is any way that you may be able to
crack it? Thanks a lot!

[Bug 2061940] Re: Some DUTs can't boot up after installing the proposed kernel on Mantic

2024-04-23 Thread Ivan Hu
bisect kernel result,
the patch 2c7b4bfadef08cc0995c24a7b9eb120fe897165f causes this regression

thermal: core: Store trip pointer in struct thermal_instance

Replace the integer trip number stored in struct thermal_instance with
a pointer to the relevant trip and adjust the code using the structure
in question accordingly.

The main reason for making this change is to allow the trip point to
cooling device binding code more straightforward, as illustrated by
subsequent modifications of the ACPI thermal driver, but it also helps
to clarify the overall design and allows the governor code overhead to
be reduced (through subsequent modifications).

The only case in which it adds complexity is trip_point_show() that
needs to walk the trips[] table to find the index of the given trip
point, but this is not a critical path and the interface that
trip_point_show() belongs to is problematic anyway (for instance, it
doesn't cover the case when the same cooling devices is associated
with multiple trip points).

This is a preliminary change and the affected code will be refined by
a series of subsequent modifications of thermal governors, the core and
the ACPI thermal driver.

The general functionality is not expected to be affected by this change.

[Bug 2051232] Re: kernel: BUG: Bad page state in process kworker

2024-04-23 Thread GuoqingJiang
Could you try the latest upstream kernel which convert dm-crypt's
tasklet to BH workqueue? I suppose the commit fb6ad4aec1d0 ("dm-crypt:
Convert from tasklet to BH workqueue") might resolve the issue.

And mantic master-next has disabled tasklets for dm-crypt.

https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/mantic/commit/?h=master-
next=13104eddc76990dc3e4183cff050c9b6dc5e859e

I suppose hwe-6.5 will sync from mantic later, so please try with the
newer kernel.

BTW, could you share how to reproduce the issue? I can try from my side
in case above commits doesn't help.

[Bug 2063099] Re: Stopping container signal blocked by AppArmor on Ubuntu

2024-04-23 Thread Seth Arnold
AppArmor's signal handling is a bit more involved than eg capabilities
or file accesses: both the sender profile and receiver profile need to
have signal rules to allow sending the signal or receiving the signal,
as appropriate.

23.10 and 24.04 LTS have introduced restrictions on unprivileged
namespaces to try to mitigate against kernel exploits. The details have
changed between 23.10 and 24.04 LTS, so it's possible that upgrading to
24.04 LTS will be sufficient to fix this -- especially if the AppArmor
profiles have been updated during the development cycle.

I'm not sure what exactly to suggest as I don't know the various kinds
of Docker available, where the profiles live, etc. But hopefully these
hints will help you get to a fix.

Thanks

[Bug 2063271] Re: Illegal opcode in libssl

2024-04-23 Thread John Todd Palumbo
Thank you for your quick and helpful reply. A few quick checks make it
appear that reinstalling libssl as you suggested has completely resolved
the problem.

Thanks also for your suggestion about checking failing hardware. There
seems to be no sign of any errors in my drive, but I'll continue to test
the drive and my RAM. Perhaps it was just a stray cosmic ray.

Thanks again and best wishes to successful bug smashing!

[Bug 2063271] Re: Illegal opcode in libssl

2024-04-23 Thread Alex Murray
Thanks for reporting this issue - but it is strange since this update
has been published since 2024-02-27 and this is the first such report of
any issues.

Also given this update has been available for nearly 2 months it is
surprising you are seeing errors from it so much later - I wonder if
instead whether the on-disk binary has been corrupted? Can you please
try reinstalling libssl3 and see if that resolves the issue:

sudo apt install --reinstall libssl3

If this does resolve the issue, it might be worth checking whether you
have any failing hardware / disks etc that may have led to this problem.

[Bug 2063138] Re: upgrade from mantic to noble disables gr lanaguage

2024-04-23 Thread Claus7
Hello,

the answer is negative. I installed mantic using virtualbox. I added the
hellenic (greek) language as usual and issued the gsettings commands in
order to change language using Shift+Alt. I upgraded the system to
noble, since the issue was observed during an upgrade from mantic to
noble. I didn't observe the language problem.

Regards!

[Bug 2040483] Re: AppArmor denies crun sending signals to containers (stop, kill)

2024-04-23 Thread Tomáš Virtus
There's a similar issue with runc (and containerd and docker) reported
here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apparmor/+bug/2039294

I've opened PRs with a fix upstream:
- https://github.com/moby/moby/pull/47749

I think I'll need to work a little bit more on them to dynamically add
rules only for profiles that exist on the system, even though it works
even if they don't exist. Is this a proper way to fix it? I have gained
all my experience with AppArmor in last 2 days.

For podman a similar change should be applied to the profile template
defined here
https://github.com/containers/common/blob/main/pkg/apparmor/apparmor_linux_template.go.
I can do that later.

[Bug 2039294] Re: apparmor docker

2024-04-23 Thread Tomáš Virtus
As a temporary workaround, put the file I have attached to
/etc/apparmor.d/docker-default and load it with "apparmor_parser -Kr
/etc/apparmor.d/docker-default". This will make dockerd skip loading its
builtin profile and use this one instead. The only difference between
the builtin one and this one is the following rule:

  # runc may send signals to container processes
  signal (receive) peer=runc,

I've opened PRs upstream:
- https://github.com/moby/moby/pull/47749

I think I'll need to work a little bit more on them to add rules only
for profiles that exist. (It works even if they don't exist though.)

[Bug 2063252] Re: warning: option 'size' missing for zfs encryption install

2024-04-23 Thread Dan Bungert
From the plymouth side, some configs show this and some do not, so I
think there is room to make the messages go away there. Notably Ubuntu
Desktop doesn't show those messages.

On the Subiquity side, we surely can build crypttab in a way to make the
warnings go away.

[Bug 1887558] Re: Multipath JBOD storage devices are not shown via /dev/mapper but each path as a single device.

2024-04-23 Thread Mitchell Dzurick
I have successfully created a kvm based reproducer.

1) get an image
$ wget
https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server/daily-live/pending/noble-live-server-amd64.iso

2) Create bcache disk
$ fallocate -l 20G image.img
$ make-bcache -C image.img

3) Boot into iso with multipathed bcache disk
$ kvm -m 2048 -boot d -cdrom ./noble-live-server-amd64.iso -device
virtio-scsi-pci,id=scsi -drive
file=image.img,if=none,id=sda,format=raw,file.locking=off -device
scsi-hd,drive=sda,serial=0001 -drive
if=none,id=sdb,file=image.img,format=raw,file.locking=off -device
scsi-hd,drive=sdb,serial=0001

Select "Try or install Ubuntu" wait for the OS to load. Press F2 to
escape to a shell to check multipathed devices.

You will see exactly what this bug describes - /dev/sd{a,b} is present
with no multipathing.

Redo these steps without make-bcache on image.img and you will see a
proper multipath /dev/mapper/mpatha present.

[Bug 1953572] Re: Broken links in the View Trends and the View Histogram menu

2024-04-23 Thread Jorge Merlino
Patch for Noble, Mantic and Jammy

** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+ The links for the following are broken in the Service Information or the Host
Information menus for the following links:
+
  View Trends For This Service
View Alert Histogram For This Service
  View Trends For This Host
View Alert Histogram For This Host

- Maybe similar to
- https://support.nagios.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7=42728
- https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1428111
+ [Test Plan]
+ Just access those links in: Current status / Hosts and Current status /
Services and choosing a host or a service

- the legacy links seem to work (.cgi) if you manually type them in.
+ [Where problems could occur]
+ The URLs for all cgi scripts are modified. I tested extensively but there may
be some section of the web UI that might get affected by this change. Also
installed nagios from source and the URLs are the same as the ones in this
package after the change so if something breaks it probable is broken also
upstream.
+
+ [Other Info]

[Bug 2063260] [NEW] ovn-ic: systemd service does not use ovn_ctl_opts

2024-04-23 Thread Roberto Bartzen Acosta
Public bug reported:

The ovn-ic.service script doesn't use OVN_CTL_OPTS from environment
file.

This way, we won't be able to start the daemon automatically by loading
configurations via file, just like ovn-ic-db service already does.

The idea to solve the problem would be to add the
EnvironmentFile=-/etc/default/ovn-ic to the ovn-ic.service and add the
opts when starting the daemon via ovn-ctl.

e.g.: /etc/default/ovn-ic file

OVN_CTL_OPTS="
--ovn-ic-nb-db=tcp:172.30.40.5:6645 \
--ovn-ic-sb-db=tcp:172.30.40.5:6646 \
--ovn-northd-nb-db=tcp:172.30.40.65:6641 \
--ovn-northd-sb-db=tcp:172.30.40.65:6642

[Bug 2063259] [NEW] sudden issues with monitors and sleep mode with 6.5.0-28-generic kernel

2024-04-23 Thread Harold Hogshooter
Public bug reported:

I have Kubuntu 22.04 and KDE 5.24.7 on my desktop. On 4/19/24 it
downloaded and installed kernel 6.5.0-28-generic. After restarting, I
suddenly had 2 issues:

1. I have 2 monitors. One of the monitors would not turn on while in the
KDE desktop. However, while booting and also after getting into KDE and
pressing CTRL-ALT-F2 to switch to the terminal the monitor worked, so I knew
there wasn't a hardware problem with the monitor.
2. I could no longer put the computer into sleep mode. When I clicked on
"sleep", it appeared to go into sleep mode (the working monitor would turn
off), but the CPU fan never turned off and it was still "awake".

I was able to revert back to 6.5.0-27-generic from the grub menu and the
above issues went away, but they are concerning and I can't use
6.5.0-28-generic.

[Bug 2063257] [NEW] Noble: default pam config for login tries do load non-existent pam_lastlog.so

2024-04-23 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Public bug reported:

pam_lastlog.so was dropped by upstream in 1.5.3[1][4]. It's still there
in the code, but not built by default.

And indeed, in noble (1.5.3) we don't have it, while mantic (1.5.2)
does.

This does not prevent console logins, but generates an error in the logs:
Apr 23 20:02:09 n1 login[835]: PAM unable to dlopen(pam_lastlog.so):
/usr/lib/security/pam_lastlog.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file
or directory
Apr 23 20:02:09 n1 login[835]: PAM adding faulty module: pam_lastlog.so

Debian's shadow package is also still shipping this config[2].

If you think we should re-enable pam_lastlog, then this becomes a bug in
the src:pam package, but keep in mind upstream is keen on removing it,
and we might be better off switching to an alternative, perhaps
pam_lastlog2[3].

[Bug 2051996] Re: apt-mirror not syncing correctly

2024-04-23 Thread nE0sIghT
Hello!

I believe this issue can not be easily fixed in the apt-mirror because it
currently doesn't enforce mirror data integrity.
You can try apt-mirror2 that enforces data integrity checks:

[Bug 2063256] [NEW] lvm and encryption option not available

2024-04-23 Thread John Carruthers
Public bug reported:

Description: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
Release: 24.04

There is no "entire disk with lvm and encryption" option available.
When the "Erase disk" option is selected the entire disk is selected for
installation and the user is given the option to "Encrypt system" but there is
no mention of LVM. A 4GiB boot partition is created as ext4 and the rest is
partitioned as luks2. After reboot the system looks like a standard non-lvm
layout.

The changes for mantic and jammy look good to me. I verified with the
ppa here - https://launchpad.net/~lvoytek/+archive/ubuntu/chibi-scheme-

armhf is ftbfs, but that was already the case so it should be fine.

[Bug 2063255] [NEW] Cannot play audio from server on older models

2024-04-23 Thread Dave Jones
Public bug reported:

While attempting to play music as part of the ISO tests for the release,
while the vc4hdmi sound card appears in /proc/asound/cards, the mpg321
player used by the tests (which has never worked *well* on the older
models, but at least worked) failed with:

  [0.029s] ubuntu@miss-piggy:~$ mpg321 -o alsa -a hw:1,0 test.mp3
High Performance MPEG 1.0/2.0/2.5 Audio Player for Layer 1, 2, and 3.
Version 0.3.2-1 (2012/03/25). Written and copyrights by Joe Drew,
now maintained by Nanakos Chrysostomos and others.
Uses code from various people. See 'README' for more!

Playing MPEG stream from test.mp3 ...
  MPEG 1.0 layer III, 128 kbit/s, 44100 Hz joint-stereo
Can't open libao driver with device hw:1,0 (is device in use?)

I also tried ffmpeg (which usually works a bit better on the older
models) and that fails with a constant series of ALSA buffer xrun
errors. The specific models on which this has failed so far are the 2B
and 3B+. It appears to work happily on the 4B, though.

Hi Ganesh,

Try this combination of firmware:

System ROM- R11 v1.60 (03/07/2024)
iLO Firmware Version - 1.55 Dec 14 2023

I am still able to install without any issues.

[Bug 2038340] Re: clang packages in 22.04 have the wrong libstdc++-*-dev dependency

2024-04-23 Thread Bernd Schubert
Also happens here, but not on all systems. One difference between these
systems is that gcc-12 is installed on those that fail, but not on that
that work. But then installing gcc-12 does not fail such systems - I'm
still not sure what the trigger actually is.
