[Bug 1971010] Re: [vmwgfx] Screen and mouse doesn't work in VirtualBox when paravirtualization is enabled

2022-05-04 Thread 3vi1
I have the exact same bug, using Xorg. VM worked until updated to
Jammy, now shows just like in OP's video: Launcher is drawn fully, but
only the top left part of the background draws. Dragging windows in
working portion of screen with mouse doesn't work.

The paravirtualization setting has no effect, in my experience - tried
every setting and system persists to show the issue.

[Bug 1878601] Re: Merge nfs-utils from Debian experimental for 22.04 - version in Ubuntu is *very* old

Errr... doesn't this update completely break sssd, since the new package
depends on libnfsidmap1 whereas sssd depends on libnfsidmap2? I can't
seem to have both sssd and nfs-common installed in jammy since this

[Bug 1900362] Re: Kernel turns off USB-devices

2020-11-27 Thread 3vi1
I started noticing this today after a reboot (kernel 5.8.0-25
hirsute/dev repos). Both my keyboard and mouse have begun
autosuspending after only a few seconds on non-use. Echoing 'on' to the
appropriate /sys/bus/usb/devices/usb#/#-#/power/control path gets them
working again.

This is a desktop with no laptop tools / power management packages
installed. Looks like udev is being too optimistic about what it should
shut down.

[Bug 1887814] [NEW] 32-bit files not included in nvidia-driver-450

2020-07-16 Thread 3vi1
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from 440 to nvidia-driver-450, and found that suddenly WINE,
Steam, and other 32-bit OpenGL apps would no longer work (64-bit OpenGL
apps worked fine). This was tested with the current version:
450.57-0ubuntu2 on groovy.

Completely removing nvidia* packages and re-installing did not fix.

The issue is compounded by the fact that nvidia-driver-440 has been
replaced with a transitional package pointing to the 450 version, so
backleveling is not possible.

The package also recommends "libnvidia-compute-450:i386 libnvidia-
decode-450:i386 libnvidia-encode-450:i386 libnvidia-ifr1-450:i386
libnvidia-fbc1-450:i386", none of which are installable.

libnvidia-gl-450:i386 is not installable:

Package libnvidia-gl-450:i386 is not available, but is referred to by
another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
 libnvidia-common-450

libnvidia-common-450 does not contain the 32-bit files, and there is no
32-bit version of that package.

Extracting the 32-bit files from the official nVidia package and placing
them in a directory linked with ldconfig fixes the issue.

[Bug 1860271] Re: rtl8812au Wifi driver not working under linux 5.3.0-26

2020-06-24 Thread 3vi1
I tested with the 5.6.4.2 driver from the aircrack repo
(https://github.com/aircrack-ng/rtl8812au), and that one works with my
USB dongle. [yay!]

I did have to re-enter the WPA2 key in network manager in order to
reconnect to my wireless, which was odd - but this is the first version
newer than 4.2.3 that actually activated the dongle and enabled the USB
light on my particular device.

2020-06-23 Thread 3vi1
Still not working under 5.4.0-31 (groovy gorilla alpha) either.

If I remove the rtl8812au-dkms package and build the driver from
/usr/src/8812au-4.2.3, that older version works fine. The problem is,
that older version needs to be rmmod/modprobed every day or two or
certain apps start hanging at specific network operations (logging into
EVE Online, for one).

[Bug 1750677] [NEW] Default avatar shown for Active Directory users

2018-02-20 Thread 3vi1
Public bug reported:

Release: Ubuntu 17.10
Version: 5.10.5.1-0ubuntu2

What was expected: Locking the desktop should show the .face.icon file
for the current user on the lock screen.

What happens: If the user is authenticated via Active Directory, the
user's .face.icon file is not used - it shows the default icon instead.

Perhaps kscreenlocker is confused about the correct path to the .face |
.face.icon file. The users home directory in this setup will be in
/home/DOMAIN/userid, and $HOME points to that location. .face and
.face.icon both exist in the user directories, and the authorities are
set so that everyone has read access. Locally defined users on the same
system show the face avatar correctly.

[Bug 1703221] Re: no sound at all

2017-07-13 Thread 3vi1
It looks like a recent package update may have broken pulse on artful,
as I too am seeing this on my previously working artful installation. I
hadn't rebooted in a week or three, so I can't say exactly which package
broke it.

I can tell you how I fixed it, though:

aplay -l and other things showed that the sound devices were in fact
being seen by the system, it seemed that it might be a pulseaudio issue.
Looking closer, I found the following in syslog...

---
Jul 13 08:25:15 sager pulseaudio[28983]: E: [pulseaudio] module.c: Module
"module-switch-on-connect" should be loaded once at most. Refusing to load.
Jul 13 08:25:15 sager pulseaudio[28983]: E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Module load
failed.
Jul 13 08:25:15 sager pulseaudio[28983]: E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Failed to
initialize daemon.
Jul 13 08:25:15 sager systemd[8923]: pulseaudio.service: Main process exited,
code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
Jul 13 08:25:15 sager systemd[8923]: Failed to start Sound Service.
---

I don't know that much about pulse config/internals, but digging around
I found a reference to that module in /etc/pulse/default.pa.

I commented out the second to the last line, where it tries to load
module-switch-on-connect, and then was able to restart pulse audio
(systemctl --user start pulseaudio) and all of my sound devices were
found and are now working accordingly.

[Bug 752542] Re: ACPI DSDT info

Attached is the tar for my Sager NP8658-S (Clevo P650RG) with Sager's

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM204M [GeForce GTX

No nvidia driver after 364.19 works fully with this system. Newer
(375+) drivers lock system if X is started with BIOS in DISCRETE mode.
In MSHYBRID mode, (375+) nvidia drivers stutter and hang; connecting
external monitor shuts off both monitors. In MSHYBRID mode, setting
prime to Intel hangs system after lightdm accepts credentials - removing
nvidia drivers completely lets Intel chipset work normally.

[Bug 1299747] Re: Cannot create PGP key in Ubuntu 14.04

2017-02-22 Thread 3vi1
THANK YOU to Thomas for this last comment. Even today, running the
17.04 alpha, I thought I had discovered a bug with keys not being
generated - when the real problem is that the interface doesn't tell you
it will take time for the key to be generated. After waiting several
minutes one of the two duplicate keys I attempted to create appeared in
my list.

The interface generally needs an update to avoid this problem of user
confusion.

There may be other problems than confusion as well. Since I created two
keys with exactly the same name/info, but only see one in my list, how
do if I didn't break the process? Not knowing what happened after
kicking off the generation, I as a normal user have no idea if it failed
to create the second key or it created both but is only showing one in
the list because they're not uniquely named.

There are four new files in ~/.gnupg/private-keys-v1.d/... and it looks
like the key's listed only once in pubring.gpg... It's technical enough
that the sort of person who actually uses the Password and Keys GUI can
have no confidence in their key's state after experiencing this
situation.

I deleted the key to start over, some of my trepidation was confirmed:
I was asked for two separate confirmations when deleting the key - so
I'm guessing it was one for each duplicate.

[Bug 1629276] [NEW] network-manager ignoring DNS settings in wifi connections

2016-09-30 Thread 3vi1
Public bug reported:

Since updating to network-manager 1.2.4-0ubuntu1 and libnss-resolve
231-7 on the 28th, yakkety is now ignoring manual DNS settings on wifi
connections. The resolv.conf file is points to 127.0.1.1 instead of
what is configured in the connection.

To recreate
---
On Ubuntu 16.10 (fully patched as of 2016-09-30):

1) Create an ipv4 wifi connection, with a manually set a dns server.
2) Connect to that wifi connection
3) Test name resolution - it will still be using 127.0.1.1 instead of your
manually configured server

This might be considered a security problem for people that use special DNS
configurations or dnscrypt.

[Bug 1603501] [NEW] gimp: symbol lookup error: gimp: undefined symbol: gegl_param_multiline_get_type

1. Run 'gimp' from console.
2. Console returns: "gimp: symbol lookup error: gimp: undefined symbol:

The installed package/version of gimp is 2.8.16-1ubuntu3. Gimp was

[Bug 1589006] Re: Failed unmounting Mount unit for nvidia support in snappy

2016-06-05 Thread 3vi1
> For anyone encountering this bug, a workaround to allow the removal of
the broken package is to first stop your X display manager, then use
remove the packages manually on the command line, and finally reboot.

That did not work in my case - even booting into recovery mode, never
starting X.

I had to go edit two of the prerm scripts so that they didn't try to
stop var-lib-snapd-lib-gl.mount. Otherwise, that failure would block
libcuda1* and nvidia-opencl-icd*.

I'm still seeing this bug still in my fully updated Ubuntu 16.04 alpha.

When I start my laptop, it detects the external 2560x1080 external

Since my laptop is physically to the right of the external monitor, I
use systemsettings5/display configuration to drag it to the left of the
virtual monitor. If I do that in one single step, I find that it always
crashes the session as the original reported.

As a workaround, I've found I get the desired positioning in two steps
by moving the external monitor to a virtual position /above/ the laptop
screen, applying that, then moving the laptop screen to the right of the
external monitor.

HOWEVER, if I restart the system after using that workaround, KDE will
fail to start every time I login, and throw me back to lightDM. The
only fix for that is to go to a terminal and delete the screen
configuration in ~/.local/share/kscreen/. I then have to move the
monitors around again after logging in; I do this every reboot. :\

There's nothing obviously wrong with the "bad" kscreen configuration
that prevents login. I've attached it anyway - in case a dev can see
where loading it would break things.

** Attachment added: "kscreen config created by two-step reposition, which must
be removed to enable login."

[Bug 1425961] Re: kscreen no longer detecting disconnection of primary external monitor

2015-04-01 Thread 3vi1
It looks like this has improved somewhat: It's no longer necessary to
delete the contents of .local/share/kscreen at least.

The problem where the system does not appropriately act upon
connection/disconnection of the monitor still shows itself in several
very obvious ways though:

Scenario 1:

1. Connected to external (primary) 2560x1080 monitor, put laptop to sleep.
2. Disconnect monitor.
3. Wake laptop.
4. kscreenlocker_greet is unresponsive, and trying to draw a 2560x1080 unlock
screen on the laptop's 1920x1080 screen.
5. The only way to get past this is to go to a terminal and kill the locker
process (which will respawn with correct screen info). The correct screen
setup will be used after you unlock the respawned locker.

Scenario 2:
1. With laptop not connected to monitor, sleep system.
2. Connect to external 2560x1080 monitor.
3. Wake laptop.
4. After unlocking screen, desktop resolution is still 1920x1080, filling only
the left 3/4ths of the screen.

[Bug 1435061] Re: KDE 5 is corrupted, after updating Kubuntu

2015-03-29 Thread 3vi1
I've seen the same symptoms on several of the updates during the vivid
development cycle. I believe I've seen the problems while others
haven't because always I go in and change the default theme, colors,
positions, etc. and have multiple monitors.

My workaround has been to delete everything in ~/.cache and restart KDE.
That usually corrects the issue. In worst cases, I've had to remove the
plasma* files out of ~/.config.

It might be a good idea if the future KDE packages cleared their files
out of .cache automagically.

I'm using systemd, so I'm doubtful the init system has anything to do
with the issues.

[Bug 1426333] Re: gpodder fails to start after 2/27's 15.04 beta updates

2015-02-27 Thread 3vi1
Yes, it does appear to be caused by the same underlying Python change.
That was a purposeful change, so t looks like this will need to be fixed
in each offending app. Therefore, I'm not going to mark it as a
duplicate.

[Bug 1425961] [NEW] kscreen no longer detecting disconnection of primary external monitor

2015-02-26 Thread 3vi1
Public bug reported:

Since KDE/plasma updates a few weeks back, KDE seems to no longer
correctly detect when my external monitor (which I set to primary, when
it's connected) is disconnected. Even rebooting does not correct the
problem.

The only workaround is to delete the contents of /.local/share/kscreen/
and restart the desktop.

This was working fine in earlier versions of the plasma 5 desktop and
kde 5 frameworks with the same hardware.

[Bug 1413605] Re: krita package broken

2015-02-18 Thread 3vi1
What's the plan with this breakage: Waiting on 2.9 final before
rebuilding working packages? I'm guessing that's only a week or so
away, from the banner on their website.

I believe the importance on this should be set relatively high, since it
would be completely app-breaking for 100% of the vivid users if it stays
unaddressed for two more months.

[Bug 1415702] Re: Today's network-manager update completely breaks network-manager service

2015-01-29 Thread 3vi1
When I try to use ubuntu-bug on the crash file (with and without sudo),
apport seems to silently crash without ever getting to the point of
uploading the bug.

You were correct in your workaround. I removed the iPhone I had in the
bluetooth configuration (as well as some other MAC-named entry I had not
seen before), and Network Manager was able to start successfully.

Thank you very much for spending time on this.

I've tried apport on the crash file repeatedly, but I don't see anything
after continueing on the first dialog.

There's also nothing in the apport, dmesg, or syslog files (nor command
line) to indicate apport is having a problem. The apport service is
still running fine (and I've restarted it just in case)... it just
doesn't do anything further with the crash file.

[Bug 1300283] Re: LibreOffice does not start in a KDE 4 session

2014-04-01 Thread 3vi1
On my system, launching from the icon seems to be failing with an
uninitialized window. If I launch it from a console, sometime I see
that same problem, sometime I get the black window Paul described, and
occasionally it works properly.

So I think we're all seeing the same issue, it's just that the symptoms
can vary.

[Bug 1282867] Re: Many bugs in rendering with lockups, likely caused by SNA

2014-02-25 Thread 3vi1
Another i915 user running KDE here: I started experiencing the exact
problems after the package pushes on 2/20.

The screen corruption doesn't always start immediately, but when it does
it's horrible: http://i.imgur.com/W2N2y6e.png

Hangups/crashes are frequent (multiple times a day).

I backleveled the mesa (to saucy packages) and xserver-xorg-video-intel
(to xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.99.910+git20140210) , and the
corruption/crashes went away.

The current packages also break Primus (the render window is solid
black). Backleveling the mesa/intel packages fixes this issue as well.

[Bug 1112652] Re: [raring] no ethernet with auto default power option with 82579LM

2013-03-14 Thread 3vi1
I've been seeing the same problem with my main test desktop and the 3.8
kernels.

Many times I could just reboot a few times and the connection would come
up. But as of this morning I can't get the interface to come up in my
desktop machine without using Francois's hack (thanks for that, BTW).

[Bug 974480] Re: Notification area whitelist is obsolete

2013-03-07 Thread 3vi1
For a start, it enables us to offer predictable and reliable keyboard
 access to system menus.

How can this be so, when Wine and Java apps are still supported? What
makes them different than any other app that doesn't support
appindicator? Isn't the fact that they are exceptions somewhat of an
acknowledgment that this is a bad idea on some level? Where is the
process to appeal for whitelisting of other apps by those of us who
otherwise like Unity?

Leaving the whitelisting option is much better for everyone, because if
an apps tray icon has to be whitelisted and causes problems, that's on
the person who whitelisted it. If an app's whitelisted and works fine,
all the better.

I have spent a lot of time and written a lot of words turning various
peoples opinions around to a positive outlook on Unity, and this one
change is all it took to drive me to KDE for as long as the programs I
use are broken (which looks like forever, given their devs reactions),
because I *need*, not *want*, to use those programs.

[Bug 1079810] [NEW] indicator-sound under XFCE: No way to change device

2012-11-16 Thread 3vi1
Public bug reported:

When using indicator-sound under XFCE, there is no discernable way for a
user to change the device whose volume it represents/controls.

If you select 'Preferences', as you would to make this change when using
Unity, you are taken to pavucontrol - which has no way to select a
device for the control.

To manually work around this, you must issue 'sudo gnome-control-center
sound' (The sound, bluetooth, and other control center apps don't appear
to be visible/accessible without sudo) and change the device.

Either indicator-sound should dynamically iterate the devices and give
you a chance to select them from its context menu, or pavucontrol needs
a way to to change the device, or preferences should fire off the
equivalent of 'sudo gnome-control-center sound' (preferably in a way
that the user doesn't have to enter their password just to get to the
sound preferences).

I think the first of the three options is the best, because you wouldn't
even need to show the devices in the menu if there were only one - and
it would speed up access for people with multiple devices not only under
XFCE but under Unity as well.

[Bug 1041637] [NEW] GF114 cards = PFIFO - playlist update failed on boot.

2012-08-25 Thread 3vi1
Public bug reported:

The bug reported at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53101
appears to be affecting Quantal too.

Using a GTX 560 Ti, I see the same PFIFO - playlist update failed and
Failed to idle channel # messages when using the Nouveau driver.
LightDM fails to start and is restarted over and over.

This appears to be due to this commit:

[Bug 1037896] Re: Starting Firefox kills xserver immediately when using 2D desktop

2012-08-23 Thread 3vi1
Yes, Rocko - It's in the nvidia driver. See Daniel's message #6.

Unless I misunderstand what he said: Nvidia built/released the 304.37
drivers to what they thought would be 1.13 compliant around the 13th,
but there was a change in the ABI on the 17th, that broke their
compatibility, before the finalization of 1.12.99.905 version on the
21st that is now in the repos.

[Bug 913839] Re: NM can't connect dial-up networking via Bluetooth and Blackberry 9800

2012-07-24 Thread 3vi1
Not only does it not work in 12.04, things have degraded even further in
Quantal w/kernel 3.5.0-6 such that I can't even enable the box to
Access the internet using your mobile phone (DUN). It invariable ends
with the Error: Timed out detecting phone details message (and
*nothing* added to the syslog).

I removed the pairing on both the PC and the phone and rebooted both
before starting with fresh pairing in the above situation.

Other bluetooth features appear to work fine. For instance, I use
blueproximity with it. (Note: I completely disabled blueproximity from
startup before running the above test)

The same phone continues to work fine for DUN fine with Windows XP.

[Bug 1019079] Re: package nvidia-current-updates has unmet dependencies!!!

As Dave points out, the real problem is not that there are unmet

[Bug 1019079] Re: [quantal] nvidia-current-updates needs rebuilt for Xserver 1.12

2012-06-29 Thread 3vi1
I'm in a very similar boat myself, actually. I too am just an alpha
tester here, and this has pretty much put the kibosh to most of my
Quantal usage for the moment. Nouveau doesn't work too well with my
GTX560Ti (It will only came up in lower resolutions that don't match my
monitor) on my main system.

But I would expect this problem will affect a *large* percentage of the
Quantal testers and developers (especially over the weekend as people
reboot after upgrading X), so there will probably be new nvidia-current
/nvidia-current-updates packages post-haste.

[Bug 1019079] Re: [quantal] nvidia-current-updates needs rebuilt for Xserver 1.12

2012-06-29 Thread 3vi1
If you're really stuck, you can workaround the problem like I just did:

I manually grabbed the 302.17 nvidia-current and nvidia-current-dev from
the xorg-edgers ppa here: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-
edgers/+archive/ppa/+sourcepub/2512683/+listing-archive-extra, and
manually installed them with dpkg -i.

I knew the packages in the edgers ppa would have to be compiled against
the newer xorg to work. :)

[Bug 974480] Re: Remove Notification area whitelist in 12.10

2012-06-15 Thread 3vi1
I gotta agree with Sebastien; this seems like a horrible idea. There
are apps that will *never* directly support Unity's notification area,
but work fine with whitelisting. I regularly use at least three that I
had to whitelist manually.

The only reason to remove the option of whitelisting would be to force
technical users to decide to either stop using those programs (many of
which need a working tray icon to be useful) or stop using Unity. If
you want people to have a valid reason (freedom of choice in
applications) to bash Unity in favor of every other desktop available,
go for it.

[Bug 1004394] Re: Libreoffice menus unreadable

2012-05-31 Thread 3vi1
lo-menubar doesn't seem to work for the initial LibreOffice window (the
main one where you can choose a document type), so the workaround is
incomplete.

2012-05-27 Thread 3vi1
Please close this as INVALID. I just tested on a VM and could not
recreate the issue.

Looking closer, my issue was probably due to an installation of Octave
that had been compiled from source and was resident in /usr/local/bin.

[Bug 941271] Re: Unnecessary HDIO_GET_IDENTITY message on boot

2012-05-26 Thread 3vi1
This is still present in the current 3.4.0-3 (quantal) kernel.

I noticed that I only see the error for one of my USB3.0 drives, not for
my USB2.0 connected drive.

[Bug 1000238] Re: Software-Center crashes on starting

2012-05-18 Thread 3vi1
Looks like line 176 of /usr/share/software-
center/softwarecenter/ui/gtk3/views/appdetailsview.py is trying to call
Gtk.ProgressBar.set_data(), which doesn't appear to be a valid method
from what I see in the docs at http://www.pygtk.org/docs/pygtk/class-
gtkprogressbar.html.

Forgot to add: Commented out line 176 and it works fine, though I
didn't go look to see if the visual bug 606942 was reintroduced.

[Bug 675007] Re: guake loses focus after adding a new tab

So this was fixed upstream but still hasn't made it into the Ubuntu
packages, or is the current state a regression?

[Bug 963538] Re: ubuntuone-control-panel-qt consistently fails to start

It looks like a dependency for python-dirspec is missing in the Ubuntu

[Bug 791785] Re: kradioripper is now kstreamripper

2012-03-24 Thread 3vi1
This is _still_ a problem in the current Precise beta that's about to go
LTS.

I tested on multiple systems, and KRadioRipper crashed on startup on
*all* of them.

--
[xcb] Unknown request in queue while dequeuing
[xcb] Most likely this is a multi-threaded client and XInitThreads has not been
called
[xcb] Aborting, sorry about that.
kradioripper: ../../src/xcb_io.c:178: dequeue_pending_request: Assertion
`!xcb_xlib_unknown_req_in_deq' failed.
--

I downloaded and compiled the source for the latest version
(KStreamRipper) 0.7.100 from the link Lukas provided above, and it works
*perfectly* on all of my Precise machines.

Whether or not KStreamRipper is packaged and made available in the
repos, KRadioRipper needs to be removed because it plain doesn't work
and should not be part of a LTS release.
