[Bug 544119] Re: Crash at end of splash screen in Beta 1

2010-03-23 Thread Adam Plumb
I'm using two displays running through the DVI ports on my Geforce
7600GT. Pressing Alt+SysRq+K seems to clear the hang. When I press it,
the screen freezes for several seconds with a bunch of artifacts all
over it, then it loads the LiveCD desktop.

FYI, when I do get to the desktop Apport shows an error report. After
attempting to report it, it shows up as an already reported but
(#441904). I'm not sure if the two are related or not, but I figured it
was worth mentioning.

[Bug 544119] [NEW] Crash at end of splash screen in Beta 1

2010-03-22 Thread Adam Plumb
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xsplash

When booting the Ubuntu 10.04 Beta 1 amd64 LiveCD (downloaded through
bittorrent) it gets to the splash screen and works for a while but then
just as the dots all turn orange and it seems like it is going to load X
it crashes hard. No amount of Ctrl+Alt+anything has any effect, the
only solution is resetting the computer.

FYI, I have a Geforce 7600GT video card and an Intel Q9550 CPU
(motherboard is Intel DG33TL or something like that).

FYI2, I was able to get into the LiveCD desktop by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1
during the splash screen but before it crashes and getting into a
framebuffer console, but when I installed the beta and rebooted, it
crashed at the splash screen again just like before. Except this time,
I couldn't get into the framebuffer console because there is no grub
menu.

this issue. I'll be releasing a new version soon, but in the mean time

[Bug 103719] Re: Won't return from suspend on emachines M6810

2009-03-19 Thread Adam Plumb
I installed Jaunty 9.04 alpha on my laptop (the m6810) by doing a
distribution upgrade from the existing 8.10 system. The upgrade process
was a success and after rebooting I immediately tried to suspend. I put
the laptop into suspend mode and it went down. Once down, I pressed the
power button and to my astonishment the laptop immediately turned on,
asked me to enter my password, and I was taken to my normal desktop! It
even re-connected to my wireless AP automatically without trouble.

Maybe someone else with an M6810 (would be rare, the laptop is almost 5
years old) can confirm. Otherwise, I would call this one fixed for
jaunty.

[Bug 103719] Re: Won't return from suspend on emachines M6810

2009-03-06 Thread Adam Plumb
Thanks for reopening Leann.

My first results are a little mixed. I connected the laptop to my
router via an ethernet cable, booted up the Jaunty Alpha 5 livecd,
created a user account and installed ssh server. I confirmed that I
could ssh into the machine, then I put it into Suspend. After going
down, I pressed the power button to bring it back and was met with the
familiar black screen. I went to ssh in but was unable to connect. I
tried pinging and got a Destination Host Unreachable.

a...@office1:~$ ssh a...@192.168.1.38
ssh: connect to host 192.168.1.38 port 22: No route to host

a...@office1:~$ ping 192.168.1.38
PING 192.168.1.38 (192.168.1.38) 56(84) bytes of data.
From 192.168.1.45 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable

So I'm thinking networking is not getting restarted after the suspend.

I'm going to try this same procedure in 8.10, which is what is currently
installed on the laptop.

[Bug 103719] Re: Won't return from suspend on emachines M6810

2009-02-08 Thread Adam Plumb
I'm running an emachines m6810 laptop and I have this same issue on
Ubuntu 8.10 with the latest 2.6.27-11-generic kernel. When I suspend,
the machine goes down into suspend mode and my power button blinks.
When I press the power button to turn it back on, the light stops
blinking and turns a solid blue, but the machine never comes back to
life.

I've attached a file with the output of the following commands:

$ uname -a
Linux emachines 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP Thu Jan 29 19:24:39 UTC 2009 i686
GNU/Linux
$ sudo lspci -vv  kerndebug.txt
$ sudo lspci -vvn  kerndebug.txt
$ sudo dmidecode  kerndebug.txt

I will try with the latest Jaunty alpha live cd and report back with my
findings.

[Bug 295192] Re: with multiple-monitors, firefox menus/url history/tooltips shows up on wrong monitor

2008-11-21 Thread Adam Plumb
I came across this issue again this morning, and thought I had been
mistaken when I had reported it fixed. This bug still occurs under the
corner case where only a single monitor is enabled, and with firefox
open, a second monitor is enabled. If firefox is closed before enabling
the second monitor it'll work fine. It must be something that is
happening when firefox is opened.

Here's how I reproduce it:

1. Have only a single monitor enabled.
2. Open firefox
3. Enable the secondary monitor.
4. Move the firefox window to the secondary monitor.
5. Open menus/tooltips/etc. They will show up on the primary monitor.

To get around this, switch steps 2 and 3.

[Bug 173767] Re: Desktop effects causes titlebar anomaly

2008-11-07 Thread Adam Plumb
I can confirm that this bug is still in effect in Intrepid with the
latest updates as of this morning (Nov 7th). I'm running a 7600GT with
the proprietary drivers. The bug happens when I have Visual Effects set
to Normal and when I use my mouse to hover over the
Min/Max/Close/leftside icons in the window titlebar.

The bug ONLY occurs if the window is currently in focus, and ONLY occurs
with the mouse cursor over the titlebar buttons. If it is not in focus,
then no amount of hovering will create artifacts.

If I mouse over the buttons and get the artifacts, then I can usually
get back to normal by hovering again, and then moving the cursor away
from the titlebar.

[Bug 295175] [NEW] Switching to VisualEffects causes skype tray icon to show desktop background

2008-11-07 Thread Adam Plumb
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: desktop-effects

Using Intrepid Ibex (gnome) with latest updates as of Nov 7th. I'm
running an NVIDIA 7600GT with proprietary drivers from the ubuntu
repository.

When I switch from no visual effects to normal visual effects, the
background of the skype system tray icon goes transparent and I can see
the desktop background through the gnome panel.

This seems to only happen with the skype icon.

If, after turning on visual effects, I quit skype and then restart it,
the icon displays normally with the normal gnome panel background.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Make sure you're on Visual Effects:None
2. Make sure skype is running.
3. Switch from Visual Effects:None to Visual Effects:Normal

The issue is reproducible for me every time I switch, not just the first
time.

Binary package hint: firefox

I have a dual-monitor setup using an NVIDIA 7600GT and proprietary
drivers on TwinView mode.

I'm using Intrepid Ibex (8.10) with the latest updates as of Nov 7th.

When I have firefox on the right-side monitor, the menus, url history,

Unfortunately, I can't seem to get a screenshots of the menus/url
history/textfield issues because they disappear when I click away from

menu/history). But I was able to get a shot of a tooltip showing up
