[Bug 2065295] [NEW] spicy-client-gtk has no desktop file so GNOME won't remember 'allow inhibiting shortcuts' selection

2024-05-09 Thread Alan Pope 
Public bug reported:

Whenever I use spicy-client-gtk (which is launched from a command-line
script) I get a pop up asking me to "Allow inhibiting shortcuts". This
popup appears every single time. I would like it not to.

I am told GNOME is designed for this option selection to be remembered,
if there is a desktop file. spice-client-gtk does not appear to ship one
(at least in the package I have on 24.04).

Could a .desktop file please be added?

[Bug 2061918] Re: package thunderbird 2:1snap1-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: new thunderbird package pre-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2024-04-23 Thread Alan Pope 
I managed to unbreak my system (in case anyone stumbles here looking for
help) after reporting bug 2063219

Julian suggested installing libglib2.0-0t64_2.80.0-6ubuntu1_amd64.deb
manually downloaded from the archive with dpkg, which I did.

Then checked the debs in /var/cache/apt/archives/*.deb were only from
the release upgrade (not from previous updates) by correlating with my
/var/log/dpkg.log package update timings.

sudo dpkg --install /var/cache/apt/archives/*.deb. # ran this twice
sudo apt --fix-broken install. # this now runs successfully
sudo apt update
sudo apt dist-upgrade # to continue the broken mantic to noble upgrade

liblxc-common 1:5.0.1-0ubuntu7 and liblxc1 1:5.0.1-0ubuntu7 have a
colliding /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lxc/rootfs/README

sudo apt --fix-broken install. # resolved above by removing liblxc1

sudo apt dist-upgrade
sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop^
sudo apt dist-upgrade

After all that, it's "fixed". Thanks Julian <3

I managed to sudo dpkg -i ./libglib2.0-0t64_2.80.0-6ubuntu1_amd64.deb

As per suggestion from Juliank.

Sadly it's all still a bit of a mess..

Public bug reported:

Sorry I don't have much data, as my system is hosed, can't run ubuntu-
bug or apt.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 which shipped with 20.04 and has been
upgraded through 23.10. I tried a do-release-upgrade but that failed
part way through. I'll attach what I can.

Some snippets:

I think this was the start of the badness:

dpkg: libssl3:i386: dependency problems, but removing anyway as you requested:
 libssh-4:i386 depends on libssl3 (>= 3.0.0).
 libshout3:i386 depends on libssl3 (>= 3.0.0~~alpha1).
 libsasl2-modules:i386 depends on libssl3 (>= 3.0.0).
 libsasl2-2:i386 depends on libssl3 (>= 3.0.0).

[Bug 2060122] [NEW] minimise animations fly everywhere

2024-04-03 Thread Alan Pope 
Public bug reported:

Problem:

When maximising/minimising/restoring a window by clicking on the item in
the launcher, sometimes (often) the animation - which makes the window
shrink and 'fly' to or from the dock, will fly in the wrong direction.

Steps to reproduce:

* Have multiple monitors (I think, I don't recall seeing this in a single
monitor usage)
* Launch a number of applications
* Click icons in the dock to trigger animation as applications grow and shrink
from the launcher up to the workspace.

What should happen:

* Window appears near the dock, and grows to the final location on screen
and
* Window shrinks back down to the dock

What happens:

* Sometimes windows fly up to the top left of the display, *and* to the
dock at the bottom. Animation frames flicker all over the place, but
mostly both towards the top left and towards the bottom.

It *looks* like alternate frames of animation are flying up and down.

Here is a video of it happening.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2vgEurkHk8

I am currently running Ubuntu 23.10, but I am sure I have seen this on
multiple releases.

I am using multiple displays. Arranged like this:

( 1 )( 2 )
   ( 3 )

1 - external display
2 - external display
3 - Laptop (primary)

The launcher is on the bottom of the primary monitor.

2024-03-24 Thread Alan Pope 
Why do we have to file a new bug for this. The task for mantic says it's
fix released, but it clearly isn't.

alan@ziggy:~$ grep -r Meta.Rectangle /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/
/usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/ubuntu-d...@ubuntu.com/appIcons.js:
const rect = new Meta.Rectangle();

This is fixed in noble, but not mantic.

I see no SRU pending: https://ubuntu-archive-team.ubuntu.com/pending-sru

This bug was filed against mantic, it's a mantic bug. So the status of
'fixed released' is clearly just incorrect, surely?

[Bug 1938195] [NEW] Configuration for eGPU removed on update

2021-07-27 Thread Alan Pope 
Public bug reported:

ThinkPad X1C9 running Kubuntu.
I'm using an external nVidia GPU in an enclosure, attached via thunderbolt.

I have applied updates over the last few weeks, and rebooted today.
Got a black screen. Turns out an update back in mid June (22nd) removed the
Option
"AllowExternalGpus" "true" from my xorg.conf.

Why is an update removing a vital configuration option enabling me to
display my login screen?

I had to re-edit the xorg.conf like an cave man from 20 years ago.

[Bug 1917939] [NEW] windows maximise underneath dock

2021-03-05 Thread Alan Pope 
Public bug reported:

Under wayland on 21.04 windows keep maximising underneath the dock. So I
can see icons "through" the dock, when I shouldn't. In the attached
screenshot you can see Telegram showing through the dock.

If I switch to the application in question, unmaximise and re-maximise,
it goes back to maximising inside the usable area of my desktop.

But when I suspend and resume, then login, I'm left with windows under
the dock again. Never seen this under xorg. I only discovered I was in
wayland when I tried to ALT+F2, R to restart.

I can try, but I can't trigger it to happen. Given I had 60 days uptime
on my system before it happened last time, and 12 days the time before
that. That gives you some idea of the interval between it happening.

[Bug 1910866] [NEW] nvme drive fails after some time

2021-01-09 Thread Alan Pope 
Public bug reported:

Sorry for the vague title. I thought this was a hardware issue until
someone else online mentioned their nvme drive goes "read only" after
some time. I tend not to reboot my system much, so have a large journal.
Either way this happens once in a while. The / drive is fine, but /home
is on nvme which just disappears. I reboot and everything is fine. But
leave it long enough and it'll fail again.

Here's the most recent snippet about the nvme drive before I restarted
the system.

[Bug 1907239] [NEW] Oh no! Something has gone wrong

2020-12-08 Thread Alan Pope 
Public bug reported:

I got the "Oh no!" screen.

The likely trigger was when I was playing a game and took a screenshot -
where the environment is likely hard to reproduce because the game I'm
playing that triggered the scenario isn't out yet. It can be built tho.

1) git clone https://github.com/mcphail/boa
2) git checkout core18
3) snapcraft --use-lxd
(wait a while, it's a monster snap)
4) snap install boa*.snap --dangerous
5) snap run boa
(wait for game to load to title screen)
6) press ALT+PrintScreen to get a screenshot

GNOME crashed at this point, giving me the "Oh no!" screen.

It does indeed! Thanks.
Looks like upstream marked the linked bug from there as a dupe of

[Bug 1900984] [NEW] Multi-monitor window-snapping snaps to wrong display

2020-10-22 Thread Alan Pope 
Public bug reported:

Summary:

Snapping a window to one side of the screen will often snap to the side
of the wrong monitor.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Have two monitors arranged side by side
2. Open a new application window such as nautilus or a terminal
3a. Grab the right half of the title bar of the window and drag it to the left
side of the right monitor. Don't let go
or
3b. Grab the left half of the title bar of the window and drag it to the right
side of the left monitor. Don't let go
  - The orange window snapping guide will appear in the correct place
4. Let go of the mouse
  - The window will snap to the wrong monitor

It appears due to the amount of the window hanging over the separation
gap between the displays, it will favour snapping to the wrong monitor.

Here's a video showing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdJ6x9nnvOQ

[Bug 1888380] [NEW] Give better experience of migration of deb to snap

2020-07-21 Thread Alan Pope 
Public bug reported:

Summary of current state:

Back in 19.10 we migrated the deb of chromium to a snap. Users who
installed the deb, got snapd and the snap of chromium. Users who already
had the deb of chromium, and upgraded, got snapd and the snap.

The goal of making the snap was (largely) to reduce the workload on the
desktop team in packaging chromium, and to enable the desktop team to
publish updates to users very quickly across all supported releases. For
users, the goal is to have an up to date chromium browser.

For people upgrading, the migration goal was to ensure they kept the
browser they'd installed (chromium has never been a default on Ubuntu,
but has been on at least one flavour).

Feedback from the field:

 * Some have complained that the Chromium snap has bugs which didn't manifest
in the deb (see this very bug tracker)
 * Some complained that there was no indication that they'd have a deb replaced
by a snap (hard to know how many users actually care about this)
 * Derivative distributions have complained that snapd is being installed
"under the covers" or "via the backdoor" (or other pejorative statements)

Suggestion for improvement:

I believe a fair amount of critique comes from the ignorance of why
chromium was migrated to a snap, as most users don't read our blog
posts, news articles or release notes. In addition, there's not a
tremendous number of user-facing packages which have gone through the
deb-to-snap migration, so not a lot of prior art in the field.

So it's my believe we should document this better, inform the users
better.

* At the point of installation of the deb, make it clear that snapd will be
installed, followed by the chromium snap (and whatever other content and base
snaps are required).
* During an upgrade from the deb to the snap, make it clear the deb is being
replaced, with similar information to when the snap is installed.
* Link to documentation / blog / specific release notes in visible places which
makes it clear why this is happening.

I'll refrain from suggesting technical solutions because I think we need
to discuss the options.

Does it still occur with newer versions of the font viewer?
Was there (if you recall) a particular font file which triggered this?

I'm running linux-image-5.4.0-30-generic and it happened again last night.
I come back to the machine and see corruption on both external panels, while
internal panel is off. So it does indeed feel like i915 related. Would be happy
to try and get more debug info, but it's hard given the machine completely
locks up.

There is even video evidence of me nuking it on that day :D
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOUwdhNbHtk

I assume I can't do the moving files around from /boot to
bpool/BOOT/ubuntu_.. from the running environment? I need to use a live
USB? I'm gonna need a pointer to some more detailed docs on how to do
the mounting.

[Bug 1876440] [NEW] Wrong kernel is booted

2020-05-02 Thread Alan Pope 
Public bug reported:

As part of debugging bug #1871687 I was asked to add a ppa and install a
new kernel. My system booted not into that kernel, but the older
original one shipping in Ubuntu.

Steps to reproduce

On a zfs/zsys enabled 20.04 system, add ppa:canonical-kernel-team/proposed and
update/upgrade.
As of today you'll get linux-image-5.4.0-29-generic
Reboot

Expected outcome

Boot to newer linux-image-5.4.0-29-generic kernel

Actual outcome

Booted to older stock kernel - 5.4.0-21-generic

2020-05-01 Thread Alan Pope 
Adding your PPA and getting linux-image-5.4.0-29-generic. Will reboot
and try this over the weekend. I never know how to trigger this, so no
idea if it actually will or not.

[Bug 1871687] Re: System hard locks up intermittently

2020-05-01 Thread Alan Pope 
This feels very multi-monitor centric.

I have had it numerous times overnight. I have 2 external displays
permanently attached, so 3 displays active in total, at most times. This
is sometimes triggered overnight, probably when a notification comes in
and triggers the displays to wake up.

This morning I noticed one display was off, like it was receiving no
signal. But it is there in gnome display settings. So I try and turn it
off and on again in there. But that causes the display corruption to
appear, and it locked up. I had to hard reboot.

[Bug 1869571] Re: Vertical dual monitor setup with main monitor on bottom causes overview to only use one eighth of screen

2020-04-20 Thread Alan Pope 
I just ninja'ed the docking.js file as per the change in comment #23 and
that fixes both the issue in this bug, and the issue where the icons are
all small (as shown here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mZZtClVOSg)

Screenshots attached.

[Bug 1872276] Re: Gnome shell huge app's icon size in the app folder

2020-04-12 Thread Alan Pope 
This seems somewhat dependent on the screen resolution.

At 1920x1080 (the most popular screen resolution) our default web browser is
"Firefox Web br..."
At 1366x768 (the next most popular screen resolution) it's "Firefox W..."

It looks like the GNOME stock application names have been optimised for
this behaviour, being called short names like "Calendar", "Calculator",
"Terminal", "Settings", "Fonts" which fit beneath their icons.

Perhaps our stock .desktop files should be examined, and developers
encouraged to use shorter names. In 2020, does anyone on Linux really
not know that Firefox is a Web browser for example?

[Bug 1871687] [NEW] System hard locks up intermittently

2020-04-08 Thread Alan Pope 
Public bug reported:

My T450 main laptop is generally left on all day and night. I sometimes
suspend it when moving around the house, but it's often left on all the
time. Sometimes when I go to start work in the morning there's some
corruption on screen and the laptop won't respond. I can't REISUB or ssh
in.

This has happened a few times since clean installing 20.04. Previously I
was on an upgraded-to-20.04 install and don't recall it happening there.
The other obvious difference is I'm now running ZFS which I wasn't
before. :S

[Bug 1869981] Re: Printer notification every day at midnight

2020-04-01 Thread Alan Pope 
I am getting it on 3 machines. One is a clean install of 20.04 from the
media dated 20200301. Another is an upgrade done some weeks back which
was previously 18.04 installed from media dated 20190210.

I can't tell you when I started getting it, but it's been a while. The
clean install has been getting it and I just thought it was because I
was getting software updates that restarted cups or something. Then I
noticed a couple of days ago it happens to all the machines at midnight.
Then I waited a couple of days before reporting the bug, to confirm
that's the case. The screenshot is a collection of 3 notifications over
3 nights. I don't recall seeing it on older releases.

This doesn't seem properly fixed...

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of minecraft-launcher:
 minecraft-launcher depends on libpango1.0-0 (>= 1.14.0); however:
  Package libpango1.0-0 is not installed.
Version of libpango1.0-0 on system, provided by libpango-1.0-0:amd64, is

[Bug 1869716] [NEW] Removing libpango1.0-0 broke Minecraft Launcher

2020-03-30 Thread Alan Pope 
Public bug reported:

I just updated my machine, and when I did libpango1.0-0 was removed.
This removed minecraft-launcher - the (very) popular launcher for
Minecraft Java edition.

I have reported this upstream, in case they can update their package
https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MCL-13512

I am filing this bug so we can track it internally. I personally think
this shouldn't have been done this late in the cycle, but there may well
have been good reasons for it.

As a result of the change though, it's now not possible to install
Minecraft on Ubuntu 20.04.

$ sudo apt install ./Minecraft\(1\).deb
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Note, selecting 'minecraft-launcher' instead of './Minecraft(1).deb'
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
 minecraft-launcher : Depends: libpango1.0-0 (>= 1.14.0) but it is not
installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

[Bug 1867067] [NEW] ERROR context deadline exceeded

2020-03-11 Thread Alan Pope 
Public bug reported:

When I install new packages, or do significant updates on my laptop, I

ERROR context deadline exceeded

This usually happens after "Saving system state" then a pause of some
seconds.

This feels like a bad thing?

[Bug 1859970] [NEW] orange tint in screenshots when running wayland

2020-01-16 Thread Alan Pope 
Public bug reported:

All my screenshots taken on 20.04 with wayland have an orange tint to
them. This appears to be the overlay which you get when selecting an
area. Full screen screenshots and window screenshots are unaffected,
only area screenshots appear to have the problem.

Steps to reproduce

Login to a wayland session
Hold down Shift and Press PrintScreen
Select an area to screenshot
Navigate to ~/Pictures
Open the picture you just took

Expected outcome

Screenshot of area taken as it would have been on screen

Actual outcome

Screenshot is taken, but has an orange border and overlay. (see

[Bug 1859955] [NEW] Display freaks out when external monitors are attached

2020-01-16 Thread Alan Pope 
Public bug reported:

Running Focal on my ThinkPad T450, but not unique to this release as it
happened on 19.10 (and probably older releases too).

Steps to reproduce.

While running GNOME Shell, attach the laptop to additional external monitors.
(I'm using a docking station, but equally you can attach them via the video
ports on the laptop itself)

Expected outcome

Desktop on 1 monitor goes away.
Desktop comes back on N monitors.

Actual outcome

Laptop display goes black
Laptop display comes back, moved 50% horizontally
One external monitor comes on
Laptop display goes back to normal
Second external monitor comes on
All three displays go off again
Laptop display comes on again alone
Laptop display goes off again
laptop display comes on again
External monitors come back on again
System is usable.

The entire process takes twenty seconds.

[Bug 1859320] Re: Multiple sign-in options in menu of Ubuntu Software

2020-01-15 Thread Alan Pope 
They appear to both have been removed. Does this impact my ability to
see my own private or unlisted snaps? I may want to publish a snap, make
it private or unlisted but still be able to review what it looks like in
the store.

[Bug 1859320] [NEW] Multiple sign-in options in menu of Ubuntu Software

2020-01-12 Thread Alan Pope 
Public bug reported:

Why does Ubuntu Software have (effectively) two sign in / sign out
options for the same thing?

Steps to reproduce

* Install 20.04 (or indeed 19.10, not tested on previous releases)
* Launch Ubuntu Software

Expected behaviour

* Option to sign in to Snap Store should exist
* Option to sign in to Ubuntu One should not exist

Actual behaviour

* Options for signing into Ubuntu One and Snap Store are present

[Bug 1859319] [NEW] widget factory slighty too wide for common 1366x768 display

2020-01-12 Thread Alan Pope 
Public bug reported:

I'm using a ThinkPad X220 to test the Ubuntu default theme. It has a
wildly common 1366x768 display panel. At the time of writing, around 25%
of installs have such a resolution -
https://ubuntu.com/desktop/statistics

The default non-hiding 48px launcher, and width of the widget factory,
means that it's impossible to get the entire application on screen at
once.

There appears to be some space which could be saved by shrinking
horizontally a couple of components on each page.

Steps to reproduce

* Install Ubuntu 20.04.
* Set system resolution to 1366x768
* Install gtk3-examples
* Alt-f2, gtk3-widget-factory

Expected outcome

* Entire widget factory should fit on the screen

Actual outcome

* The widget factory window is off the right hand side of the screen

Workaround

Set the launcher to auto hide, to make room.
I don't consider this suitable, because part of the point of gtk widget factory
is to test the theme, the experience, the out of the box install. Being unable
to actually get the window on the screen seems a flawed set of tests.

[Bug 1858456] [NEW] ThinkPad T450 stutters without intel_idle.max_cstate=2

2020-01-06 Thread Alan Pope 
Public bug reported:

I noticed my 19.10 laptop was stuttering - YouTube videos freezing. Did
further investigations and the entire desktop freezes, not just the
video rendering.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=869e9YwW0vw

Some investigation led me to
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109051 and
https://askubuntu.com/questions/803640/system-freezes-completely-with-
intel-bay-trail

I set intel_idle.max_cstate=2 in my grub config and now the issue never
happens, but I have (anecdotally) seen worse battery life as a result.

Can this be fixed in such a way that I don't have to suffer poor battery
performance.

[Bug 1852905] Re: nvidia-drivers-435 won't load on GeForce GTX 980M

2019-11-17 Thread Alan Pope 
I manually tried going back to nvidia-drivers-430 which didn't work
either. The module wasn't built by nvidia-dkms-430. Further
investigation revealed the kernel headers were missing. I would have
expected them to be pulled in, but ok. I moved forward to 435 again,
ensuring nvidia-dkms-435 was installed, and this time installed the
kernel headers, and this triggered nvidia-dkms-435.

So it looks like the nvidia-drivers-435 didn't pull in the headers -
which must have previously been there, because I've been using the
nvidia drivers on this machine for a week or so.

[Bug 1852905] [NEW] nvidia-drivers-435 won't load on GeForce GTX 980M

2019-11-17 Thread Alan Pope 
Public bug reported:

Preamble

I have an Entroware Athena with GeForce GTX 980M GPU. It was running
18.04, and then upgraded to 19.10 where it was running fine. I was on
GNOME but due to another unrelated bug I switched to MATE. While away, I
think some packages updated on it and when I tried using the machine it
was slow, feeling like I was using a VESA driver (very slow framerate on
the desktop). I thought it needed an nvidia driver update and reboot,
however, I couldn't install the latest nvidia driver.

It got into a situation where nvidia-drivers-435 wouldn't install
because xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-435 and libnvidia-cfg1-435 were being
held back. So I did:

sudo apt install nvidia-driver-435 xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-435
libnvidia-cfg1-435

When I rebooted, it's still not using the nvidia binary driver.

I also noted it doesn't seem to trigger dkms at all. Surely it needs to?

[Bug 1847597] Re: gnome-control-center cannot access google account

2019-11-07 Thread Alan Pope 
I'm seeing the same error.

Steps to reproduce:

Open System Settings
Go to Online Accounts
Add a google account
Enter username / password

I then get the same dialog as the reporter of this bug.

I'm on Ubuntu 19.10.

This smacks of our online accounts api key being revoked / rate-limited
or otherwise restricted by Google.

[Bug 1851127] [NEW] app page shows no install progress

2019-11-03 Thread Alan Pope 
Public bug reported:

I just installed a couple of applications (bomb squad and android
studio) and while installing, they show no install progress.

Steps to reproduce

Launch gnome-software
Click an application from the front of G-S
Click Install
Fill in password

Expected outcome

I expect to be shown a progress bar, showing that installation is
happening

Actual outcome

I see no progress, yet running `snap changes` in a terminal shows it is
installing
In addition, clicking "Install" again fails due to the install running.
