[Bug 1248289] Re: Missing libunwind support in perf

2015-11-19 Thread Alex Cornejo
This seems like a packaging problem, since in the debian world (not
ubuntu) perf happily supports dwarf symbols.

What is the current status? I would be happy to contribute a patch to
fix it, but don't want to redo anyone's work.

Also, is there a reason that the fix could not get backported to older
distros? It doesn't require changing the kernel, just the user space
perf binaries with an update.

Anyone that doesn't have perf tools installed won't notice the change.
And everyone that has perf tools installed (and therefore uses it) will
be very happy; I honestly can't see a reason NOT to do it. perf tools is
an essential component for performance tuning server applications.

[Bug 536699] Re: hda-intel spurious response messages and intermittent GDM startup with Intel D945GCLF Motherboard

2011-11-04 Thread Alex Cornejo
This bug is happening on my system too.

I am running ubuntu oneiric with latest updates. My sound does work, but
sometimes the machine locks on bootup with the spurious messages
flooding my screen, most of the time it boots proplery but slowly.

I also believe this to be an IRQ issue, but I do not know how to solve
it.

This bug is NOT fixed. I have exactly the same problem. I am using the
latest ISO of regular ubuntu (not Xubuntu).

My hardware is quite different, the only thing I have in common with the
above reporter is that I also have an advanced partitioning scheme
(i.e. I set it up manually, since I like to have separate /boot, /home
and / partitions, and I don't want ubuntu to delete my windows
partitions and my backup partitions).

[Bug 873549] Re: installer crashed when importing accounts

2011-10-13 Thread Alex Cornejo
Going through the syslog I found the problem. To reproduce simply do the
following steps:

create a partition for your home folder (using gparted or whatever).

create a folder for your user, (i.e. mkdir /media/home/${USER})

create a bad symlink in that folder to a ~/.face file (ln -sf
/nonexistentfile /media/home/${USER}/.face)

now attempt to install ubuntu, and select manual partitions to mount
your existing /home partition. The installer will crash.

replacing the .face file is not a critical operation, so crashing
because the file existed (but had an invalid symlink) doesn't make
sense. The installer should either delete the invalid symlink and
replace with a good .face file, or simply ignore the error and move
on.

[Bug 557589] Re: cannot login with disabled user list

2010-04-22 Thread Alex Cornejo
Hi Sebastien,

Sorry for the delayed response. After you uncofirmed the bug on your
system, I did some further testing on my system. It seems my initial
description was not completely accurate.

It turns out that if you wait long enough (~80 seconds) the username
text field eventually appears. This only happens the first time I reboot
the machine, and it happens regardless of what GDM version I am using.
Please feel free to close this bug report. When time permits, I will try
to run gdm using gdb to try to get to the bottom of this issue. I
suspect it might be related to the number of users in my system (1000)
and the fact that they all have afs home folders. When that happens, I
will post a new more accurate bug report.

[Bug 557589] [NEW] cannot login with disabled user list

2010-04-07 Thread Alex Cornejo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

When upgrading from gdm 2.30.0-0ubuntu1 to 2.30.0-0ubuntu3, I can no
longer login with gdm.

Downgrading gdm to the previous package solved the problem. This might
be related to the fact that I disabled the user list for GDM, since I
work in an environment with 100+ users all with AFS home folders, and
GDM takes ages to display this list.

To reproduce the bug, install the current version of gdm, and disable
the user list by executing:

sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 --set --type boolean /apps/gdm/simple-
greeter/disable_user_list true

Restart gdm, and login.

[Bug 557589] Re: cannot login with disabled user list

2010-04-07 Thread Alex Cornejo
Hi Sebastien,

I am not sure I understand your comment, but I'll try to answer anyway.

 downgrading to 0ubuntu1 works

Yes, it does, with no errors whatsoever.

and using ubuntu3 is that correct?

I am not using 0ubuntu3 right now, since it doesn't work. But I did use
it a few hours ago, and it didn't work, hence the bug report.

What error do you get in such cases?

Not sure what cases, I assume you mean when using 0ubuntu3? I got no
errors, it just presented me with the usual Log In button. I clicked
on it and instead of getting a textbox to enter my username, I got
another screen with login and cancel but without the textbox. Hence
I was unable to enter my username (or my password) anywhere. Clicking
login didn't do anything and I had to manually kill GDM at that point. I
retried killed and restarted gdm 3 times hoping it would start working,
but it never did (until I rolled back to the previous gdm version).

The output @/var/log/gdm is not enlightening IMHO, but I can paste it
here if you think it will help..

Let me know if I can provide you with more info. Also, I suggest you try
to reproduce this bug on your own system with the steps I described,
assuming you are also using Lucid Lyx, you should be able to reproduce
in less than 30 seconds, that way we can at least confirm this bug.

[Bug 557589] Re: cannot login with disabled user list

2010-04-07 Thread Alex Cornejo
As a sidenote, I know all reporters feel their bug should be the
priority of the entire world. That being said, I do believe having this
bug as low priority is a mistake.

Assume you (or someone else) confirms this bug exists, this essentially
means Ubuntu LTS will be unsable in ANY corporate or university
environment, let me elaborate a bit on this:

1. Displaying the userlist is a security risk, but lets forget about this.
1. Corporations/Universities have hundreds if not thousands of users (in my
machine the count is at 3+ thousand). This means having GDM display the
userlist doesn't work, GDM stalls for minutes displaying a blank screen on my
system unless I disable this option.

Of course, you could later release 0ubuntu55 which finally fixes this
bug. But the first released ubuntu CD will most likely be the one used
by most people to install their system, which is why I guess ubuntu folk
(you included?) are trying to fix most things before that release. Just
my 2 cents, and making sure we all understand why there are so many bug
reports and so many complaints about the userlist, which I understand
is kind of necessary for ubuntu to compete against OSX/windows in the
user friendlyness front.

[Bug 207250] [NEW] evince does not draw until resized

2008-03-26 Thread Alex Cornejo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

1) Ubuntu release: Gutsy
2) Version of evince: 2.20.1-0ubuntu1
3) To see a PDF displayed
4) A blank paper is shown in evince

When opening a PDF evince does not display the PDF until the window receives a
resize event.
This does not happen in metacity, since it sends the resize event to evince
after the window has been created, however evince should play nice with other
window managers and should not rely on metacity's specific details.

Recently I switched window managers (from metacity to awesome) and I
noticed this problem. Awesome is a tile-based window manager, and
therefore after an evince window is initially created with a given size
awesome does not send a resize event unless you explicitly change the
evince window's size using keyboard shortcuts.

This problem is also present when embedding evince using mozplugger (in
regular metacity, awesome, etc..). In fact you there are already bug
reports on launchpad describing this problem, however now it seems
obvious the problem is evince and not mozplugger.

[Bug 202696] [NEW] gconf-editor is not consistent with gtk ui

2008-03-15 Thread Alex Cornejo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gconf-editor

1) Ubuntu Gutsy
2) gconf-editor
3) latest @ubuntu repo
4) See gtk-directory incons instead of those weird yellowish icons shipped with
gconf-editor
5) Some weird looking icons that do not fit my desktop are shown

The icons used by gconf-editor do not use stock gtk icons or theme
icons.

This is not consistent with the rest of the gtk apps, and it easy enough
to use the stock gtk-directory icon in the tree view instead of creating
an icon that does not fit the user's theme.

To someone who is familiar with the code it should not take more than a
couple of lines to fix it and this should have high priority since
gconf-editor is part of gnome's core toolset.

[Bug 150877] Re: Can't extract to non-local directories

2008-03-15 Thread Alex Cornejo
I also confirm this behavior, although in a slightly different setting.

My home directory is:

/afs/myuniv/randomstuff/myusername

This is a very common setup in universities or corporations..

If I open any archive, I cannot drag and drop it anywhere, it just
doesn't work, unless I drag'n'drop to /scratch (which is a local
folder).

Again, I don't know if this bug is in nautilus or in the file-roller,
but since nautilus drag'n'drop works correctly (at least between
nautilus folders), I assume it is in file-roller.

[Bug 190413] Re: nautilus only able to open directories in text-based location bar

2008-02-25 Thread Alex Cornejo
I can confirm this behaviour, I believe this to be incorrect since the
the location bar in nautilus should behave exactly as the location bar
in gtk_open for consistency.

On a side note, it might be a good idea to extract the logic used in gtk_open
for their location bar, and create some sort of location_bar widget that could
then be used in nautilus and similar apps, this would
avoid duplicate work and would solve the problem of incosistencies between
nautilus and gtk (at least as far as the location bar goes).

Alex

[Bug 195598] [NEW] gtk open dialog, location bar

2008-02-25 Thread Alex Cornejo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libgtk2.0-0

When you bring up the gtk_open dialog the location bar gets by default the
first item on the list which can be opened. This can be very handy if that file
happens to be the same one you want to open,
however if you wanted to open something else, you have to manually erase the
location bar and then retype whatever you wanted.
An easy fix for this, would be for the content of the location bar to be
selected by default, that way if you want to type something else
the text would be automatically replaced, without requiring the user to press
backspace repeatedly.

This bug is especially annoying if you happen to be a keyboard only user
(being it by choice or necessity).

Steps to reproduce this bug execute the following code on the console:

mkdir ~/somefolder
echo some text ~/somefolder/firstone
echo some text ~/somefolder/secondfile
echo some text ~/somefolder/yetanother
echo some text ~/somefolder/lastone
gedit ~/somefolder/firstone

1. In gedit press Ctrl-O to bring up to open-file dialog
2. If there is a location bar go to point 4, else go to point 3
3. Press Ctrl-L to bring up the location bar, then press escape to close the
dialog and go back to point 1
4. The item firstone is in the location bar, however lets say you were
actually interested in opening secondfile,
you need to delete the text and then press s for the location bar to
complete secondfile for you, if the
text were selected by default then you would only need to press s (no need
to delete the text).

I hope this explanation was clear enough, although this bug might seem
unimportant to some, it slows down
a lot one's workflow, especially if working with keyboard only, for example in
kiosks where there is no mouse
and frequently not even home/end keys, so you have to delete character by
character.

Alex

[Bug 195598] Re: gtk open dialog, location bar

2008-02-25 Thread Alex Cornejo
Thanks for confirming the bug. It is true that in the particular example
I depicted you could use the arrows, however in general this is not
true, since you might want to open a file in a completly different
directory, say /usr/share/blabla.txt, in which case you do have to erase
and type it again, or use the mouse.

However, you might be correct in the sense that this might be more of a
user interface improvement, rather than a conventional bug. I believe
this should be easy enough to fix, furthermore, as I mentioned in my
original report, this type of improvements have a special impact in
users of devices != PC.

2008-02-12 Thread Alex Cornejo
I marked a two other bug reports as duplicates of this one (since this
is the first report of such bug).

I believe this is an evince specific problem and not from cupsys, since when
printing multiple copies of an image (single page document) from eog, the exact
same printing dialog is presented (as in evince), however
the result is correct (two separate copies of the document are produced).

[Bug 189430] [NEW] page_up and page_down keys

2008-02-05 Thread Alex Cornejo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I use the following bindings on metacity:

ControlAltPage_Down == rhythmbox --next
ControlAltPage_Down == rhythmbox --prev

they are stored in
/apps/metacity/global_keybindings/{command_$i/run_command_$i}

They work flawlessly.

However, when enabling the Visual Effects they stop working. In a failed
attempt to get this
working in compiz I manually added these entries to
/apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/{command$i/run_command$i_key}, but this
did not
work as expected.

Disregarding all my user preferences compiz keeps using them to switch

[Bug 147100] Re: kernel 2.6.22-12 no sound, no wireless

2007-11-04 Thread Alex Cornejo
Ok, I found a fix, but I still think this is a bug because synaptic
/upgrade-notifier should have done this automatically.

The reason I had no sound or wireless was that the modules were missing,
so first I installed linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-14-generic (why didn't
update-notifier upgrade that package too?). After intalling them, I
rebooted into the buggy kernel and expected to have sound/audio, however
still the modules were not loaded.

I then proceeded to run depmod -a and reboot again, now the modules were
automatically loadad and the sound and wireless is now working properly.
So the two relevant questions are:

1. Why didn't the update-notifier offer to upgrade
linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-14-generic if I had the older version
linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22.11-generic.
2. Why when I installed the newer version of linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-14
depmod -a wasn't run automatically from the package installer?

persist, it seems I only have sound and wireless with 2.6.22-11.

[Bug 152716] incorrect latex math highlighting

2007-10-14 Thread Alex Cornejo
Public bug reported:

Create an empty latex document
Insert some math environments using the old and discouraged $math$ and $$math$$
notation.
You will see the expressions properly highlighted as math (in my system theme
it is a light purple color).

Now use the new \(math\) and \[math\] notation.
The text will not be highlighted as math, it seems that \(\) and \[\] are not
recognized as math environment tokens by the highlighting engine.

Here is my example document to reproduce the bug:

\documentclass{article}

\begin{document}
$x+y=23$ should be the same as \(x+y=23\)

Ok, I'm in midterms right now, but as soon as I have some time I will

Your processor usage should be adversely affected if you keep typing

[Bug 145400] Re: gedit consumes 100% processor with paragraphs 10 lines.

2007-10-10 Thread Alex Cornejo
I have the same reports as to highlight/wrap combinations as Luca.

About the videocard, on the two computers I've tested it on I have
different video cards,

one of them is an nvidia geforce 7400 GO, with the nvidia-new drivers
(latest)

The other has an old ati rage something, and I am using the r128 driver
of Xorg.

I don't have any special insight into what exactly is causing this bug,
but I doubt it is a driver issue (otherwise we would have problems with
openoffice, mozilla, etc.. etc..).

I am pretty sure it has something to do with highlight engine+wrapping,
maybe as we enter new text in gedit the new margins for wrapping are
recalculated, and the highlighting of the whole line gets recalculated.
Since some highlighting engines use a lot of regexp for detecting
different highlight regions, this could potentially trigger regexps over
the whole line for each new character inserted. Anyway, this is just a
wild theory since I have no clue about the inner workings of
gtksoruceview or pango (which I guess could also be part of the
problem).

Regards,
Alex

I am confirming this bug since another user reported the same problem
(seb: I hope I'm not screwing the status up again :( )

[Bug 136876] Re: Snippets plugin doesn't work

I changed the status back to in progress since it seems that everyone
just forgot about this bug, and it is still present with the latest
updates, even though a trivial fix is available.

[Bug 145400] gedit consumes 100% processor with paragraphs 10 lines.

2007-09-26 Thread Alex Cornejo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

There is a problem with gedit (or maybe even the gtksourcebuffer widget)
when editing long lines with syntax highlighting.

Ive seen bug #134352, and it seems to be similar to what I am reporting
here, but I am creating a new bug report since in the original report
the problem seems to be minor since only long one-liner html files seem
to be the issue.

However, this bug appears even when doing a short document (for example
your homework) on Latex, and writing a small paragraph (less than 10
lines) without using line breaks.

To reproduce, create a new latex file and open it in gedit, make sure
gedit correctly detects it as latex file and it is doing syntax
highlighting on it. Now start typing gibberish (ie. asdf asdf asdf asdf
asdfasdf asdf), as your paragraph continues and the buffer starts to
break your line into several lines, you will notice how the processor
consumption will start going up, by the time you reach 10 break lines or
so (at least on my machine) the processor will reach 100% usage.

I think this bug is pretty serious, since having a 10line paragraph
seems a pretty common use case for a text editor.

[Bug 145407] missing dependency

2007-09-26 Thread Alex Cornejo
Public bug reported:

The package texlive-pstricks should have as a dependency texlive-latex-
extra since pdftricks.sty needs the moreverb package (pdftricks.sty is
in texlive-pstricks and moreverb is in texlive-latex-extra).

[Bug 145407] Re: missing dependency

2007-09-26 Thread Alex Cornejo
I come to this conclusion by using the file I specified in the bug
report, that is pdftricks.sty notpstricks alone, do the following:

$ cat test.tex
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{pdftricks}

\begin{document}
Hello world
\end{document}

$ pdflatex test.tex

Thanks for your input,
Alex

[Bug 145407] Re: missing dependency

2007-09-26 Thread Alex Cornejo
I should add that since I posted this bug I googled for related packages
and now I am using auto-pst-pdf, which in my opinion does a much better
job than pdftricks, so the bug doesn't affect me anymore (but it is
still there).

just patch the package and close this bug?

[Bug 145063] evince is looking for esd

2007-09-25 Thread Alex Cornejo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

It seems that evince (and probably other packages) is trying to access
esd, however a lot of users do not rely on esd anymore (since alsa does
the job).

To reproduce, open a terminal, and execute evince, it will report the
following to stderr:

/bin/sh: /usr/bin/esd: not found

[Bug 141130] Re: compiz stop working after 17-Sept-2007 updates

2007-09-20 Thread Alex Cornejo
There is an easy fix to this bug (which appears on my nvidia system as
well).

Edit: /usr/bin/compiz

Find: GL_MAX_3D_TEXTURE_SIZE
Replace with: GL_MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE

That fix was posted on an unbuntu forum by ButteBlues, and it works for
me. Maybe this should be patched and released upstream.

[Bug 132992] Re: [gutsy] rhythmbox cannot load UPnP plugin: python-louie package missing

2007-09-19 Thread Alex Cornejo
Why does louie have a priority of wishlist?

I agree that maybe this shouldn't be a critical bug, but then you should
remove the upnp plugin from rhythmbox, cause as it is you have a broken
dependency issue (which I think does not fall under wishlist).

[Bug 140552] pygtksourceview does not work (which in turn makes gedit and other apps function incrrectly)

2007-09-17 Thread Alex Cornejo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-pygtksourceview

How to reproduce:

Open a console
start gedit from the console (so you can see the debug messages)
Go to the Gedit-Preferences

Open the Plugins Tab, attempt to enable any python plugin (external
tools or snippets are good examples).

The plugin will fail to load and a message similar to this one will be
printed out:

** (gedit:22693): WARNING **: Error initializing Python interpreter:
could not import pygtksourceview.

** (gedit:22693): WARNING **: Please check the installation of all the

[Bug 93263] Re: [feisty] another issue with no sound after 2007-03-16 updates

2007-09-14 Thread Alex Cornejo
Hi,

I have a DELL XPS m1210, and installed the latest gutsy release with all
the latest updates. My sound didn't work, the snd_hda_intel module was
loaded, but it was aparently unused and alsamixer (or gnome-volume-
control) seemed not to detect it at all (it was not even on the list).

Adding snd-hda-intel model=3stack to alsa-base does indeed fix the
problem, but this patch needs to go upstream.

Regards,
