Re: [Bug 2062574] Re: Another fresh insstall

2024-04-22 Thread Allan Weinman
Thanks for your reply Sebastien - I can confirm it was an SSD issue. I
re-seated the SSD and it solved the problem.
It was a little confusing as the errors seemed to point to the USB media -
not the SSD but all good now!

Thanks for reaching out to assist.

[Bug 2056800] [NEW] Bluetooth adapter not working ATS2851

2024-03-11 Thread James Alford-Allan
Public bug reported:

Hi, I purchased this adapter: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Maxuni-Bluetooth-
Computer-Receiver-Keyboard/dp/B0BQ3964FP

It doesn't currently work on Linux due to a firmware bug.

The fixes are documented on the web:

https://www.linuxcompatible.org/story/xanmod-linux-kernel-618-released/
"Bluetooth: Fix issue with Actions Semi ATS2851 based devices"

https://github.com/xanmod/linux/commit/00f4b7c036814009e54ae2841c188fe064717ddf

This is what it shows up as:
Bus 001 Device 012: ID 10d7:b012 Actions general adapter

My kernel version is 6.5.0-25-generic

Anyone know how this is fixed? Im running Ubuntu 23.10

[Bug 1971195] [NEW] gnome-remote-desktop leads to a session crash inside qemu with virtio-vga

2022-05-02 Thread Allan Vidal
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1. On a jammy host, create a jammy guest:
$ qemu-img create -f qcow2 vm.qcow2 50G
$ qemu-system-x86_64 -accel kvm -cpu host -smp cpus=4 -m 3072 -device
virtio-vga -display gtk,grab-on-hover=on -hda vm.qcow2 -cdrom [jammy ISO]

2. Install Ubuntu in that VM (minimal install), no problems are expected
yet.

3. After the installation is concluded and the VM reboots, try to login
using the Wayland session (it should be the default, no need to select
anything). It will fail and bring you back to the login screen
(apparently due to a gnome-shell crash; I don't think the details are
relevant to the problem here).

What is expected: that both the Wayland and X11 sessions work out-of-
the-box.

Workaround: remove gnome-remote-desktop, and the Wayland session will
work just fine in the conditions described above. This is why I'm
reporting this issue in gnome-remote-desktop instead of Wayland or
gnome-shell or qemu. I might be wrong though...

Extra information:
1. gnome-shell starts as expected if the X11 session is selected instead.
2. Alternatively, using the OpenGL enabled virtio-vga driver also makes it work
in both the X11 and Wayland sessions:
$ qemu-system-x86_64 -accel kvm -cpu host -smp cpus=4 -m 3072 -device
virtio-vga-gl -display gtk,gl=on,grab-on-hover=on -hda vm.qcow2

[Bug 1861327] Re: [needs-packaging] Can't run npm because of outdated nodejs in repos

2022-04-06 Thread Andy Allan
I'd like to echo Adam's point. Ubuntu 22.04 is about to be released with
Node 12, which is EOL this month (April 2022)!

It seems almost unreasonable to release Ubuntu 22.04 with the oldest
currently supported Node version, and have only a week or two until it
is EOL, when there are already two newer Node LTS releases available.
Node 16 was released in April 2021, so whatever packaging policy means
that it won't be included in Ubuntu 22.04 needs to be addressed.

[Bug 1964814] Re: linux-firmware fails to upgrade to 20220314.gitcd01f857-0ubuntu1

2022-03-14 Thread Allan
What I did to workaround the problem on my system is:

rm /lib/firmware/ath11k/WCN6855/hw2.1
cp -R lib/firmware/ath11k/WCN6855/hw2.0 /lib/firmware/ath11k/WCN6855/hw2.1

And then I tried to upgrade the packages again, which I did successfully.
I don't actually need those drivers, but I think that would be an okay
workaround for those who need it.

[Bug 1964822] [NEW] dpkg won't install latest version published on Jammy

2022-03-14 Thread Allan
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1964814 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1964814

Public bug reported:

Hello!
dpkg fails the package installation with the following message:

dpkg: error processing archive
/var/cache/apt/archives/linux-firmware_20220314.gitcd01f857-0ubuntu1_all.deb
(--unpack):
 unable to open '/lib/firmware/ath11k/WCN6855/hw2.0/regdb.bin.dpkg-new': No
such file or directory
No apport report written because the error message indicates an issue on the
local system
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-5.15.0-22-generic

I am reporting this problem because I don't think it is an issue with my
local system. I believe it is happening because
/lib/firmware/ath11k/WCN6855/hw2.1 is a symlink of the directory
/lib/firmware/ath11k/WCN6855/hw2.0, and those were not created by me.

Thank you.

I disabled the AVAHI services on my servers/PCs as it conflicts with
.local running on a local DNS server. For some reason .local requests
within the Firefox snap package stopped working and just generate the
odd SOA .local DNS request.

I've now migrated my internal network to .lan and DNS resolution is
working correctly.

[Bug 1956365] [NEW] Firefox snap package can not resolve .local dns names

2022-01-04 Thread Gary Allan
Public bug reported:

Firefox snap package does not resolve .local dns names after recent
update.

After a recent snap package update of Firefox I can no longer resolve
.local DNS names for my local network. This ONLY impacts the Firefox
snap package. Brave, Chrome and DNS resolution on the local terminal
(ping) are working correctly.

When opening https://docker.local developer tools displays the error
NS_ERROR_UNKNOWN_HOST

gary@orion:~$ ping docker.local
PING docker.local (192.168.0.18) 56(84) bytes of data.

Running WireShark shows Firefox sending a single SOA DNS request to the local
DNS server.
No DNS requests for the docker.local A record are generated by the Firefox snap
package.

I have tested this faulty behavior on multiple machines running Ubuntu 20.04
and Ubuntu 21.10.

[Bug 1924282] [NEW] /etc/hp is empty after installing hplip package - 20.04LTS

2021-04-15 Thread Allan W. Macdonald
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to 20.04LTS, my HP-LaserJet 1018 printer stopped printing.
Looking at the logs, I found the following errors:

I tried completely purging and re-installing the hplip package and the
problem still exists.

[Bug 1855681] Re: Cannot purge a removed ppa

2021-04-03 Thread Allan W. Macdonald
I believe that this may have happened to me with ppa:oibaf/graphics-
drivers

$ sudo ppa-purge ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers
Updating packages lists
PPA to be removed: oibaf graphics-drivers
Warning: Could not find package list for PPA: oibaf graphics-drivers
$

In this case, the ppa exists for newer releases of ubuntu but the
support for bionic has been removed. In any case, I am stuck with
packages that were installed via the ppa but I have no way to revert
them to official package types. This seems to prevent do-release-
upgrade from completing.

[Bug 1069133] Re: Get upgrade error 12.04 - 12.10 "Could not determine upgrade" - xorg from ppa

2021-04-02 Thread Allan W. Macdonald
@Brian:

Here I am coming over from bug 1920829. I was at first tempted to
comment in the original bug but the warning message on the page,
"Remember, this bug report is a duplicate of bug #1069133. Comment here
only if you think the duplicate status is wrong" prompted me to come
here. So, here I am!

Unfortunately, I tried the ppa-purge route and failed:

$ sudo ppa-purge ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers
Updating packages lists
PPA to be removed: oibaf graphics-drivers
Warning: Could not find package list for PPA: oibaf graphics-drivers
$

When I looked online for ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers, it appears that the
packages in this ppa are no longer available for Bionic. I really don't
know what "ppa-purge" actually does but what if the ppa is no longer
available on the server? Is that why ppa-purge didn't work? Is there a
way to get the missing package list somewhere else? If I can get hold
of this list, where should it be located on my system and how can I get
ppa-purge to use this specially-obtained list?

Barring that, is it possible to just force a re-installation of the
official packages that was altered when the ppa:/oibaf/graphics-drivers
was installed? Is there a way to find out from the logs which packages
need to be re-installed?

I have a question open here as well:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+question/696223
There is a plethora of additional information in this question.

I would be happy if the correct answer appeared here or there!

[Bug 1920829] Re: do-release-upgrade fails complaining of held broken packages that apt-get upgrade or dist-upgrade does not report

2021-03-23 Thread Allan W. Macdonald
@Chris:

Thank you for your suggestion; I will go to those sites and inquire
further.

Nevertheless, when the release upgrade process was terminated, the
terminal output did include the recommendation to "please report this
bug." I presume that this recommendation was put there so that the
maintainers may be able to identify potential issues that may correct
this kind of behaviour in the future.

If I find from elsewhere that it was somehow my fault that this is
happening, I will gladly return here to mark this bug as "Invalid" but,
for now, I am assuming that this behaviour is due to some error in the
software since the cause is not at all obvious. In any case, I am
willing to defer the "nuclear option" (i.e. re-install the OS) until a
definite cause of the issue can be found.

[Bug 1026311] Re: package org.jfugue does not exist

2021-02-26 Thread Allan W. Macdonald
I know this is a really old bug but I just installed jfugue (on Ubuntu
18.04LTS) and I also ran into this problem. I was able to figure out
what was wrong so I thought I'd post this in order to help someone else
who may have googled and landed here:

The import line from the first couple of examples on the web site
(http://www.jfugue.org/examples.html) is incorrect:

import org.jfugue.player.Player;

The correct line is:

import org.jfugue.Player;

I didn't try any of the other examples but they probably all have the
same issue.

p.s. I used the following command and the output gave me a hint of what
the problem was:

jar -tf /usr/share/java/jfugue.jar | grep -i player

[Bug 1885424] Re: Create package for Thor 1.0.1

2021-01-21 Thread Andy Allan
This isn't a problem in the ruby-thor package (although it could do with
an update). This is a problem with the ruby-bundler package.

Specifically, the upstream bundler codebase vendors Thor under a
separate namespace (Bundler::Thor) to avoid this specific issue. Bundler
itself needs Thor, but many projects do too. So to make something like
"bundle exec (whatever) work, without version clashes, bundler uses a
different namespace for its internal copy of Thor.

The Debian/Ubuntu ruby-bundler package is broken though, since it rips
out the carefully vendored code in a specific namespace and uses ruby-
thor in the Thor namespace.

Here is the patch that causes the issue:

Crashes seem to happen when selecting and modifying various entities:
moving corners of a rectangle or ellipse, moving entities around,
copying and pasting, etc. Crashes do not seem to occur while drawing
new entities.

It is necessary to save frequently to avoid loss of work.

[Bug 1906600] Re: WiFi disconnects continually (goes "down" in NetworkManager)

2020-12-03 Thread Allan Yaklin
I'm having a similar errors, I think it has something to do with the
latest kernel updates. In my case, the kernel modules were updated on
Dec 1. From the apt history.log:

Start-Date: 2020-12-01 07:41:57
Commandline: aptdaemon role='role-commit-packages' sender=':1.297'
Install: linux-image-5.4.0-56-generic:amd64 (5.4.0-56.62, automatic),
linux-headers-5.4.0-56-generic:amd64 (5.4.0-56.62, automatic),
linux-headers-5.4.0-56:amd64 (5.4.0-56.62, automatic),
linux-modules-extra-5.4.0-56-generic:amd64 (5.4.0-56.62, automatic),
linux-modules-5.4.0-56-generic:amd64 (5.4.0-56.62, automatic)
Upgrade: linux-headers-generic:amd64 (5.4.0.54.57, 5.4.0.56.59),
linux-libc-dev:amd64 (5.4.0-54.60, 5.4.0-56.62), linux-image-generic:amd64
(5.4.0.54.57, 5.4.0.56.59), snapd:amd64 (2.47.1+20.04, 2.48+20.04),
linux-generic:amd64 (5.4.0.54.57, 5.4.0.56.59)
End-Date: 2020-12-01 07:43:16

I didn't restart my computer at the time, but shut it down overnight and
restarted in the morning of December 2, and that's when I started having
very similar issues as described in the original submission. The biggest
difference is that the time period of WiFi network disconnects is longer
- normally it'll work for a half hour or more, but eventually I'll get
disconnected and prompted for a password on a network that I've been
connecting to for years.

Might have something to do with Realtek wireless adapters:

allan ~ $ lspci | grep -i WiFi
03:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8188CE
802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter (rev 01)

[Bug 1904744] [NEW] cups-browsed crashes when printing test page to remote printer

2020-11-18 Thread Allan Dyer
Public bug reported:

1)
lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS
Release:20.04
2)
apt-cache policy cups-filters
cups-filters:
  Installed: 1.27.4-1
  Candidate: 1.27.4-1
  Version table:
 *** 1.27.4-1 500
500 http://hk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
3)
I have several Ubuntu 20.04 LTS desktops configured to print to a CUPS print
server with 4 printers. 3 of the printers work OK, the other one I can print a
test page locally,
I would expect sending a test page from one of the desktops would result in the
test page printing.

4) but sending a test page from one of the desktops results in the client CUPS
showing:
Paused - "No destination host name supplied by cups-browsed for printer
"Grassjewel", is cups-browsed running?"
When I check on the desktop system:
systemctl status cups-browsed
cups-browsed.service - Make remote CUPS printers available locally
 Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/cups-browsed.service; enabled; vendor
preset: enabled)
 Active: failed (Result: core-dump) since Wed 2020-11-18 21:31:48 HKT;

Process: 22293 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/cups-browsed (code=dumped, signal=SEGV)
   Main PID: 22293 (code=dumped, signal=SEGV)

Nov 18 21:31:48 Bobcat systemd[1]: cups-browsed.service: Main process exited,
code=dumped, status=11/SEGV
Nov 18 21:31:48 Bobcat systemd[1]: cups-browsed.service: Failed with result
'core-dump'.

Additional information: The 3 working printers are different manufacturer laser
printers, on the network. The problem printer is an Epson dot-matrix printer
connected to the CUPS server via a USB/Parallel converter.
Log files and core dump attached.

** Affects: cups-filters (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1902921] Re: Scaling one monitor (to 1.5x in my case) can cause Firefox to lose window features (titlebar, buttons, bookmark bar)

2020-11-04 Thread Allan Bogh
@vanvugt Can you describe which parts of Firefox you can't tell are
missing? I can update the information if necessary.

Regarding which parts are missing here's a list:

- titlebar/tabs
- minimize, maximize, close buttons
- Back/forward/refresh/home buttons, address bar, add-on buttons, settings
hamburger menu
- Bookmark bar
- Scrollbar

Navigation with escape button works.

Mouse works.

Scrolling with mouse works.

Initial right-click of the mouse shows the context menu offset from the
mouse (showed up on Primary display instead of Secondary where the mouse
was clicked). Other right clicks of the mouse show the context menu in
the correct place.

The dev console shows with all of the buttons and options present.

Other applications in windowed or fullscreen mode display on the monitor
in the correct resolution and with the window chrome.

One monitor is a 4K monitor scaled to 1.5x, the other is a normal
  1920x1080 monitor scaled to 1x.

While Firefox is already open, after logging into the lock screen,
sometimes Firefox will lose the titlebar, address bar, buttons, and

[Bug 1901828] [NEW] upgrade modifies /etc/default/grub inappropriately

2020-10-28 Thread Allan Dyer
Public bug reported:

If I have:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset"
in /etc/default/grub, boot hangs with "Failed to start Light Display Manager".
No problem, I delete the line and run update-grub.

However, running
apt upgrade
sometimes appends the line
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset"
to /etc/default/grub, resulting in a failed boot after upgrade. I am sure it is
appending the line to the file because the rest of the file is unchanged.
This has been happening occasionally for a long time. Most recently, it
happened when I used
do-release-upgrade
to go from 18.04 to 20.04
I guess some package thinks it is a good idea to add this option, but I don't
know which one, or how to stop it.

[Bug 1889920] [NEW] Grub unable to boot Ubuntu when using theme with PNG images

2020-07-31 Thread Allan Crooks
Public bug reported:

I normally use Linux Mint, but I tested the behaviour with Ubuntu and
saw the same results.

The problem seems to occur when:
 - I use Grub installed by Ubuntu 20.04.
 - I install a Grub theme which has PNG images in it.
 - I try to boot into an Ubuntu 20.04 OS.

When I select the OS from the menu, the screen just goes black and
remains that way. If I run it using the other options (where I can see
the output), the last thing it prints is "Loading initial ramdisk..."
and then just hangs there.

To avoid this problem, I can:
 - Boot into an Ubuntu 18.04 OS - the problem doesn't seem to occur there.
 - Manually remove references to images in the theme file.

I'm trying this on a Dell XPS 9380. It didn't matter if I was using a
newer kernel (5.4.0-40) or the default one upon install (5.4.0-26). It
wasn't specific to the installation, since I had multiple installs
trying to debug the issue (both of Linux Mint and Ubuntu).

I tested with the grub2-theme-mint-2k package, but then also tried
downloading other themes from other sites and saw the same issue.
Removing the references to the png images in the file allowed it to work
- it didn't seem to matter that the "insmod png" line was still present.

And it's also really strange that it only seemed to affect Ubuntu 20.04,
but not 18.04 (using kernel 5.3.0-59). I haven't seen anyone else
complain about such a thing, so I don't know if it's something highly
specific to my setup that's causing it.

[Bug 1877577] [NEW] Multi-monitor not behaving correctly when one display turned off

2020-05-08 Thread Allan
Public bug reported:

The release is 20.04.
The gnome-session version is 3.36.0-2ubuntu1.

What is expected:
1. When either monitor is turned off, the monitor that is still on becomes the
only monitor.
2. The mouse should work.

What happens:
1. When the primary monitor is turned off only, the space is not updated.
2. When the non-primary monitor is turned off only, the mouse is frozen. This
is https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-session/+bug/1709159

Long version:
I have two identical monitors hooked up on HDMI.
Let's call them #1 and #2, with #1 left of #2. #1 is primary.

Case 1: Turn off #1 (the primary), leaving #2 on:
The display has not been updated to detect the turned off monitor. The mouse
can move around on #2, including going to the #1 space even though #1 is turned
off.

When #1 is turned back on, everything works fine too.

Case 2: Turn off #2 (the non-primary) leaving #1 on:
The display *has* been updated to detect the turned off monitor. The mouse
cannot move at all, even though the cursor is visible on #1.
This is

When #2 is turned back on, there is another display update (another
flicker, plus a Pulseaudio notification of new sink detected since the
monitor has built-in speakers).

Other notes:
My card is AMD RX480. Another user in

[Bug 1877191] [NEW] Snap store doesn't change the "Install" button to show installing status after being clicked

2020-05-06 Thread Allan Bogh
Public bug reported:

When using the snap store there is no feedback after pressing the
Install button. The button continues to show "Install", is still active,
and is still green. The only way to show some sort of feedback is to
press the button again, then the progress bar will display briefly until
an error pops up informing the user that the snap store is busy
installing the application.

Expected behavior: While installing an application, the Install button
for that application should hide or show a different status ("Cancel").
Additionally, there should be a way to see all installations that are
currently running, if the user can install multiple applications at
once, to cancel any of them from within the snap store.

[Bug 1832222] Re: using aakar font reboots printer

2020-04-15 Thread Allan Dyer
Because the Aakar font is part of the fonts-gujr-extra package.
To re-phrase the problem: On certain text input, the Aakar font emits a reset
command to the printer.
In contrast, other non-Latin fonts (e.g. STZhongsong) when presented with Latin
characters gracefully degrade to a default Latin font. Alternatively, it could
be replaced in the output by a "unknown character" symbol, there is even a
Unicode code point for that: U+FFFD REPLACEMENT CHARACTER used to replace an
unknown, unrecognized or unrepresentable character. That would give a visible
clue to the location of the user's mistake.

[Bug 1859369] [NEW] Gnome Cheese Overwrites gsettings

2020-01-12 Thread Allan W. Macdonald
Public bug reported:

I cannot get cheese to use my external USB webcam.

cheese: 3.28.0-1ubuntu1
OS: 18.04.3 LTS on x86_64
gnome: 3.28.2

After plugging in the webcam, a new device appears at /dev/video2.

Before running cheese, I set the camera setting as follows:

$ gsettings set org.gnome.Cheese camera '/dev/video2'

I then confirm the settings are correct:

$ gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.Cheese
org.gnome.Cheese countdown-duration 3
org.gnome.Cheese flash true
org.gnome.Cheese photo-y-resolution 480
org.gnome.Cheese countdown true
org.gnome.Cheese brightness 0.0
org.gnome.Cheese saturation 1.0
org.gnome.Cheese video-y-resolution 480
org.gnome.Cheese camera '/dev/video2'
org.gnome.Cheese burst-repeat 4
org.gnome.Cheese photo-x-resolution 640
org.gnome.Cheese contrast 1.0
org.gnome.Cheese photo-path ''
org.gnome.Cheese selected-effect 'identity'
org.gnome.Cheese video-x-resolution 640
org.gnome.Cheese burst-delay 1000
org.gnome.Cheese hue 0.0
org.gnome.Cheese video-path ''

I then run the Cheese app, open the Preferences menu and find that the
Device field is greyed out and shows just one choice: "BisonCam, NB Pro:
BisonCam, NB"

I then run gsettings again:
$ gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.Cheese
org.gnome.Cheese countdown-duration 3
org.gnome.Cheese flash true
org.gnome.Cheese photo-y-resolution 480
org.gnome.Cheese countdown true
org.gnome.Cheese brightness 0.0
org.gnome.Cheese saturation 1.0
org.gnome.Cheese video-y-resolution 480
org.gnome.Cheese camera 'BisonCam, NB Pro: BisonCam, NB'
org.gnome.Cheese burst-repeat 4
org.gnome.Cheese photo-x-resolution 640
org.gnome.Cheese contrast 1.0
org.gnome.Cheese photo-path ''
org.gnome.Cheese selected-effect 'identity'
org.gnome.Cheese video-x-resolution 640
org.gnome.Cheese burst-delay 1000
org.gnome.Cheese hue 0.0
org.gnome.Cheese video-path ''

So, cheese seems to overwrite the gconf settings. I can't figure out
how to get cheese to use my USB webcam!

[Bug 1842364] Re: sudo localedef from docker does not work anymore after upgrade from 4.4.0-1088-aws to 4.4.0-1090-aws

2019-09-03 Thread Simon Allan
ok I think I have pinpointed a bit more precisely the issue ,

on the kernel with the bug , if from the container I do

localedef -i fr_FR -c -f UTF-8 -A /usr/share/locale/locale.alias fr_FR.UTF-8
stat /usr/lib/locale/locale-archive

I got

  File: /usr/lib/locale/locale-archive
Size: 1679760 Blocks: 3144 IO Block: 4096 regular file
Device: 10301h/66305d Inode: 521785 Links: 1
Access: (0644/-rw-r--r--) Uid: (0/root) Gid: (0/root)

Modify: 2019-09-03 08:57:16.661569167 +
Change: 2019-09-03 08:57:16.661569167 +

if i switch to the non admin user and I do head, I can't read it (but I can
list /stat it)

now if I do

chmod o+r /usr/lib/locale/locale-archive
stat /usr/lib/locale/locale-archive

I got exactly the same thing

  File: /usr/lib/locale/locale-archive
Size: 1679760 Blocks: 3144 IO Block: 4096 regular file
Device: 10301h/66305d Inode: 521785 Links: 1
Access: (0644/-rw-r--r--) Uid: (0/root) Gid: (0/root)
Access: 2019-09-03 08:57:16.661569167 +
Modify: 2019-09-03 08:57:16.661569167 +
Change: 2019-09-03 09:00:39.418079016 +

(except the change date that has changed)

but now if i go as an admin again and i do head it works !

so in the first stat, the permission reported were wrong ahd somewhat, redoing
chmod o+r corrected it.

Note that if as root I touch a file, I don't have this issue, so the
file created by localedef is created a bit differently that what "touch"
does

[Bug 1842364] Re: sudo localedef from docker does not work anymore after upgrade from 4.4.0-1088-aws to 4.4.0-1090-aws

2019-09-02 Thread Simon Allan
some precision,

actually in the "buggy" container, the file /usr/lib/locale/locale-
archive is created in all case with the permission (regardless with sudo
or directly as root user):

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1.7M Sep 2 23:17 locale-archive

however

1. if the file was generated as root, (not with sudo) , the admin user can only
get "fr_FR.utf-8" when doing sudo locale -a
2. if I chmod 777 the file /usr/lib/locale/locale-archive then the normal user
can see -it

I need to check tomorrow the permission the file had when running with the
previous linux-aws version

[Bug 1842364] [NEW] sudo localedef from docker does not work anymore after upgrade from 4.4.0-1088-aws to 4.4.0-1090-aws

2019-09-02 Thread Simon Allan
Public bug reported:

step to reproduce

take an AMI: ubuntu/images/hvm-ssd/ubuntu-xenial-16.04-amd64-server-20190816
(it runs by default the version 4.4.0-1090-aws of the kernel)

install docker on it and launch a debian:stretch instance (can reproduce
with ubuntu:latest)

curl -fsSL https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu/gpg | sudo apt-key add -
sudo add-apt-repository "deb [arch=amd64]
https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu $(lsb_release -cs) stable"
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y docker-ce
sudo docker run -it debian:stretch bash

from within the docker , install sudo and create a user "admin" part of the
sudo group
install the package 'locales', and then try to activate the locale fr_FR.UTF-8:

apt-get install -y sudo locales
adduser admin
usermod -aG sudo admin
su admin
sudo localedef -i fr_FR -c -f UTF-8 -A /usr/share/locale/locale.alias
fr_FR.UTF-8
locale -a

it displays :

C
C.UTF-8
POSIX

now if you run the same command as root, from within the very same docker
container:

localedef -i fr_FR -c -f UTF-8 -A /usr/share/locale/locale.alias fr_FR.UTF-8
locale -a

it displays correctly:

C
C.UTF-8
POSIX
fr_FR.utf8

I've been able to track down that with the AMI
ubuntu/images/hvm-ssd/ubuntu-xenial-16.04-amd64-server-20190807(ami-0e253b69fb96577d1)
 the problem does not appear
if you apt-get upgrade , it still does not appear,
BUT if you dist-upgrade, it then upgrades linux-aws from 4.4.0-1088-aws to
4.4.0-1092-aws, and if you reboot, then the bugs appears too , which to me
proves that there's an issue between docker and version of the linux kernel

[Bug 1832222] [NEW] using aakar font reboots printer

2019-06-10 Thread Allan Dyer
Public bug reported:

A user accidentally selected the aakar font for one cell of a spreadsheet
containing English text. Printing the spreadsheet resulted in the printer
displaying:
Rebooting...
followed by
Initializing
The result was the same for both printers tried: Samsung SL-M3820ND and HP
Colour LaserJet CM1017
The spreadsheet was exported to a PDF, printing the PDF caused the same printer
reboot. Opening the PDF in Libre Office Draw and printing caused the same
printer reboot.
If the font was changed to Liberation Sans, the file could be printed.
A minimal Libre Office spreadsheet with the problem is attached.

[Bug 1829620] Re: intel-microcode on ASUS makes kernel stuck during loading initramfs on bionic-updates, bionic-security

2019-05-29 Thread Simon Allan
@TJ,

we got a new employee these days who had a slightly different model of
our laptop, and he got the purple screen hangup you're describing and
the workaround of pinning the intel-microcode version fixed the issue.

[Bug 1758247] Re: gnome-control-center is not open ubuntu 18.04

2019-05-27 Thread Allan Oepping
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1755536 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1755536

I recently switched from MATE to Gnome I experience the same problem.
I have found that I can start gnome-control-center if I set the environment
variable CLUTTER_BACKEND to wayland. You can start in in your shell like so:

CLUTTER_BACKEND=wayland gnome-control-center

If I check my current environment for clutter environment variables I
see:

$set | grep -i clutter
CLUTTER_BACKEND=x11
CLUTTER_IM_MODULE=xim

None of those are set in any of my dot files in my home, the culprit
appears to be:

X11/Xsession.d/99mate-environment:export CLUTTER_BACKEND=x11

for cosmic it's the very same package

  sudo apt install intel-microcode=3.20180312.0~ubuntu18.04.1

and so far it seems to fix the issue, thanks a lot for the easy to
implement workaround.

[Bug 1829667] [NEW] Autostart doesn't work over native -protocol-tcp

2019-05-19 Thread Allan Stott
Public bug reported:

This isn't necessarily a bug, but when receiving audio through module-
native-protocol-tcp the server does not autostart when audio is being
played on the client. The result is that the server must be started
manually on the receiving machine before sound is output on the sending
machine, unless the exit-idle-time on the server is set to -1. I am
streaming over the localhost from withing a chroot, and this it is a
serious resource drain to have exit-idle disabled.

Is there a way to configure autostart when using native-protocol-tcp?

appear after clicking on the menu bar item "Bookmarks". This does not
refer to right-clicking on any bookmark that exists inside the applet
that appears after clicking "Show All Bookmarks" (i.e. the "Library"

[Bug 1767672] Re: "pip3 install cffi" core dumps

I disagree with the "Invalid" status.

"pip3 install cffi" downloads and installs cffi-1.11.5-cp36-cp36m-
manylinux1_x86_64.whl successfully on CentOS7 X64 and Debian 9 x64
without issues.

It only fails to install the package, crashing with a core dump using
the pip3 package bundled with Ubuntu 18.04. Reported here as this issue
is specific to Ubuntu 18.04.

[Bug 1598401] Re: No icons on the panel at all

2018-04-20 Thread Allan Macdonald
The fix pointed to in the following bug comment

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/umbrello/+bug/1585611/comments/4

did not work for me due to missing dependencies

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of umbrello:
 umbrello depends on kde-runtime (>> 4:4.10); however:
  Package kde-runtime is not installed.
 umbrello depends on libkfile4 (>= 4:4.11); however:
  Package libkfile4 is not installed.
 umbrello depends on libkio5 (>= 4:4.11); however:
  Package libkio5 is not installed.
 umbrello depends on libktexteditor4 (>= 4:4.11); however:
  Package libktexteditor4 is not installed.

dpkg: error processing package umbrello (--install):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

I have given up and will wait until I hear a response.

[Bug 1598401] Re: No icons on the panel at all

2018-04-20 Thread Allan Macdonald
I did find a solution suggested here:

https://userbase.kde.org/Umbrello/FAQ/en#Why_don.27t_I_have_any_icons_on_the_toolbar_.3F

So I added to my .profile file:

KDEDIRS=/usr/share/umbrello
export KDEDIRS
XDG_DATA_DIRS=$XDG_DATA_DIRS:/usr/share/umbrello
export XDG_DATA_DIRS

I then logged out and logged back in. Still no icons.

[Bug 1744590] Re: do-release-upgrade -d fails without information to resolve failure

2018-01-21 Thread allan nienhuis
I was finally able to proceed with the upgrade by:
- purging xserver and reinstalling (successful, but no luck with
do-release-upgrade)
- manually installing the held-back ati and radeon video drivers (successful,
but no luck with do-release-upgrade)
- removed all additional ppas (other software tab in software and updates
utility), including any ubuntu ones (I'd previously only removed 3rd party ones)

- did a more thorough cleanup of packages:
sudo apt-get --purge autoremove
sudo apt-get clean all
sudo apt-get purge $(dpkg -l | awk '/^rc/ { print $2 }')

The last command cleaned up a large amount of quite old stale packages.

I changed the software update options to notify me of any new version
(was set to LTS)

the re-ran the do-release-upgrade (without the -d option)

At that point I was successfully able to continue with the upgrade.

So my immediate pain is resolved. However it would have been nice for
the upgrade process to inform me of the specific invalid configuration
it had encountered, rather than stopping with only vague references to
possible conflicts with 3rd party packages, etc.

[Bug 1744590] [NEW] do-release-upgrade -d fails without information to resolve failure

2018-01-21 Thread allan nienhuis
Public bug reported:

attempting my distribution upgrade first time resulted in a listed dependency:
- Hold prevents MarkGarbage of libserf1 [ amd64 ] < 1.1.0-2ubuntu1 > ( libs )

which I then removed successfully:
- sudo apt remove libserf1

re-running the distribution upgrade (do-release-upgrade -d) again still failed,
but this time without any specific information about the reason:

Calculating the changes

Calculating the changes

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

I expect it's most likely to be a 3rd party package. I have no problem
with removing any needed package and attempting reinstall after the
upgrade, but I have no idea what package to look into.

If someone could review the associated logs for any relevant info that
would be really appreciated.

In the mean time I'll reboot and retry...
