Re: [Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close
Ubuntu is supposed to have one application per task and, more importantly, sane defaults. Yes, customizability is part of the appeal of a Linux distro, but the sane defaults should also be a selling point. So, yeah, put the controls back on the right as they were and then have a simple radio button for people who want it on the left to put it on the left. I agree (well, I always agree with the aysiu :D). I like the rationale behind the new position of buttons. In fact, I prefer it over the conventional one. However, many people won't. Many can say that it's not so hard to learn, but people still freak out. When a new user debates with himself whether or not he's going to keep using Ubuntu, he may even consider the window button order as a factor for deciding. UX wise, the new window button order may be best for people who aren't used to any window button order. However, the small UX benefits of this new window button order may not justify the bad press Ubuntu is going to get because of this. -- [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 478391] Re: Right click menus on Docky, unlike typical GNOME apps, don't have mnemonic keys
Something to think about: when you right click an entry on the window list applet on gnome or even on other platforms, you can press C to close the window or window group. That's what I do all the time and it makes the operation much faster. Though I use the touch pad most of the time, even if I was on a mouse, my left hand would still be holding C. Like Docky, you need a mouse to initiate interactions with the window list applet. If I'm used to this kind of operation, I will be slowed down a bit when I choose to switch from the window list applet to Docky. What I liked about GNOME Do is that it allowed me to do more things with the keyboard in an efficient way. This isn't about the bug anymore, but this is a related feature request. If there is a way to interact with Docky entries without using the mouse, Docky would be more feature-rich and that would allow us all to do things faster. On Konqueror, if you press Alt, you will get a shortcut key for each link in the webpage. Though I'm not sure that it's the best idea for a webpage (because some webpages just have too many links among other issues), it would be a helpful feature for Docky when executed well. For example, if you press win+alt+F, Firefox's right click menu will be activated on Docky then you can just click its mnemonic. That's going to make window management a lot faster. -- Right click menus on Docky, unlike typical GNOME apps, don't have mnemonic keys https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/478391 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 478391] [NEW] Right click menus on Docky, unlike typical GNOME apps, don't have mnemonic keys
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-do On typical GNOME applications, like the window list applet, there are mnemonic keys that make operations faster. This is one of GNOME Do's goals. A new feature that can help satisfy this goal is to have mnemonic keys on Docky's right click menus. I don't know what toolkit is used for this and what can be done with this type of GUI, but it would be helpful if there are mnemonic keys. [Bug 478021] [NEW] A different GTK+ theme for root apps can be useful
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: human-theme This is more of a usability suggestion that needs discussion than a bug, maybe. I'm aware that when you use a GTK+ theme, if it sits on both /usr/share/themes and ~/.themes, you will have different looks for apps ran as root and as the normal user. I used to have Shiki-Wise as the root version for all my shiki themes to tell me that the certain app is ran as root. It's just a hassle for me to implement that every time so I can't maintain it. This could be the reason why this feature is impractical to implement but a more solid way to materialize this could be a good feature for Ubuntu. Now, I'm thinking of having the Human GTK+ theme to automatically be in the ~/.themes of every user and there's a different version of the theme on /usr/share/themes that tells the user that the app is running as root. What can you say about this? :) ProblemType: Bug Architecture: amd64 Date: Sun Nov 8 11:31:48 2009 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.10 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala - Release amd64 (20091027) Package: human-theme 0.37 PackageArchitecture: all ProcEnviron: PATH=(custom, user) LANG=en_PH.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.31-14.48-generic SourcePackage: human-theme Uname: Linux 2.6.31-14-generic x86_64 ** Affects: human-theme (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug -- A different GTK+ theme for root apps can be useful https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/478021 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 476170] [NEW] Panel looks inconsistent when not all monochrome icons load earlier than the others
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: humanity-icon-theme This is related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/430277 . As mac_v advised, this should be separate bug, which makes sense. Yes, having monochrome icons reduces visual noise, but the visual inconsistency it creates makes it impractical. I don't use Humanity primarily because of this. My suggested fix is to stop using monochrome icons altogether because the user is very likely to use application that doesn't have such an icon. If there's a way to make all monochrome icons appear on the right end and all colored icons appear on the left, that's going to be great. However, that may be difficult to implement. [Bug 468007] Re: Can't set other apps to be on indicator-applet by default
I think, our initial idea of tweaking the indicator-applet is through the app's own settings dialog (which doesn't exist... yet?) is because we know that this is a new app that is put on top of the desktop that we always knew. If we regarded the app like libnotify, we could be more inclined to change the notification settings on the app that uses it like Pidgin, for example. Another thing is, the indicator applet sits on our panels. If libnotify had a panel icon, I think, I would expect to be able to tweak my notification settings on the GUI of libnotify as well. I think, Mark's point is valid in putting the settings of the notification on the app (like Evolution), but it would also be ideal to add a configuration dialog for indicator-applet that can be accessed through it's panel applet's right click menu. Think about how Pidgin handles proxy settings. Yes, those settings should be global and set using GNOME's tool for the job, but Pidgin still provides the GUI that points the user to GNOME's proxy settings. This is also the case for other browsers, IM clients, and other apps even in other platforms. My suggestion is to have a configuration dialog for indicator-applet and an option on the GUI of Evolution, Empathy, or whatever. If they can't both have a unique GUI for the job (which *could* be useless), one of them should at least point the user to the GUI where the setting can be tweaked like how Pidgin configures proxy. -- Can't set other apps to be on indicator-applet by default https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/468007 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 470743] Re: PolicyKit unlock button text appears dissociated from key icon
I'm a usability enthusiast and an Ubuntu user at the same time. When I read click to make changes, I didn't know what it meant. Having text placed like that never seemed to be a convention. Also, even if it was a convention, it's hard to interpret for first time users. There's Help, Lock Icon, Click to make changes, and Close. All of them are buttons except the Click to make changes text. What makes me assume that the text is supposed to be associated to one of those buttons and the one it is associated with is the one on the left? For me, it's the metaphor that the icon represents. It took too much analysis and I'm more savvy than the typical user. What I suggest now is simply have a button with the text Make Changes or something more fit if we can think of one. -- PolicyKit unlock button text appears dissociated from key icon https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/470743 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pidgin Setting an Away status on Pidgin doesn't put a Busy icon on Y!M I expect to have a busy icon set on my Y!M account whenever I set an Away status. It is inconsistent because the indicator-applet-session and Pidgin both have away icons. I think, this is because Y!M doesn't have an Away equivalent. [Bug 470743] [NEW] key icon on users admin is hard to understand
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools On users-admin, there is a key icon, which is supposed to authenticate the administrator. Beside it is text that says Click to make changes. The text seems out of place. It is hard to determine that the text on the right of the key icon is what describes what it does. What would be easier to understand would be having the icon and text on the authenticate button. However, GNOME is veering away from that convention. Because of this new trend, it could be better to simply have the Click to make changes text on the authenticate button. [Bug 468007] [NEW] Can't set other apps to be on indicator-applet by default
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: indicator-applet On indicator applet, I see Empathy and Evolution by default. Apps like Pidgin and Gwibber appear on the applet, but that occurs only if they are opened by the user. I was looking for a way to put those applications on the applet by default and remove Empathy. [Bug 468029] [NEW] Get Help Online and Report a Problem deserve attention in the installer slideshow
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubiquity The installer slideshow is a very useful feature for new users (and old users alike). I've been using Ubuntu for years, but it still helped me when I saw the slideshow. I found out about cool features that weren't given attention. The last part of the slideshow tells the user where to ask for help. However, it wasn't pointed out that there are very handy features under the Help menu of almost every GUI app. I believe that pointing out to the user (new or old) that Get Help Online and Report a Problem exist would be beneficial for bug management and helping users out. The slideshow is a great place to inform users about this. btw, I'm not sure if this is the right package for this issue. Please edit if I'm wrong. If asking for the password tells the user that it's because Gwibber is accessing the saved username and password of the user's microblogging accounts, the user would understand why the password is being asked. ** Affects: gwibber (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Gwibber's asking for the GNOME keyring password seems to be unjustified https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/404835 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
