false alarm. Looks like update-manager -d only worked for me, because
I ran it on the terminal and not on alt+F2 dialog, which may be the real

Re: [Bug 489824] Re: power manager icon on system tray doesn't indicate battery status correctly

2010-06-17 Thread Allan Caeg
Still having the same issue on 10.04 32bit. If I'm not mistaken, this is
also true for 64bit.

I have a Fujitsu Esprimo U9200 Running Ubuntu 10.04, and I have the same

Plug the AC charger in and I get the discharging pop up

Unplug the AC charger and the battery icon goes fully green

Strange behaviour. The battery does charge and discharge as it is meant
to, but it is just Ubuntu is reading things some what in reverse.

Re: [Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-16 Thread Allan Caeg

Ubuntu is supposed to have one application per task and, more
importantly, sane defaults. Yes, customizability is part of the appeal
of a Linux distro, but the sane defaults should also be a selling point.
So, yeah, put the controls back on the right as they were and then have
a simple radio button for people who want it on the left to put it on
 the left.

I agree (well, I always agree with the aysiu :D).

I like the rationale behind the new position of buttons. In fact, I prefer
it over the conventional one. However, many people won't. Many can say that
it's not so hard to learn, but people still freak out. When a new user
debates with himself whether or not he's going to keep using Ubuntu, he may
even consider the window button order as a factor for deciding.

UX wise, the new window button order may be best for people who aren't used
to any window button order. However, the small UX benefits of this new
window button order may not justify the bad press Ubuntu is going to get
because of this.

Imagine how many times each day you try to grab window borders and fail.

Usability is a key factor in modern systems and can not be rated high enough.
With usability I mean pure pragmatic ergonomics, not animations or themes
which are merely design which can be argued about.
Usability tests comprise of things like
   * number of clicks to perform a task,
   * mouse movements required
   * hit and miss clicks
   * eye movements required to find the next step in a workflow
etc.
Usabiltiy is fairly easy to count and meter and to build a testbed for.
When I look a the plethora of themes, color and background settings it seems
to me though that ergonomics do not have enough charme for most developers.

[Bug 478391] Re: Right click menus on Docky, unlike typical GNOME apps, don't have mnemonic keys

2009-11-20 Thread Allan Caeg
Something to think about: when you right click an entry on the window
list applet on gnome or even on other platforms, you can press C to
close the window or window group. That's what I do all the time and it
makes the operation much faster. Though I use the touch pad most of the
time, even if I was on a mouse, my left hand would still be holding C.
Like Docky, you need a mouse to initiate interactions with the window
list applet. If I'm used to this kind of operation, I will be slowed
down a bit when I choose to switch from the window list applet to Docky.

What I liked about GNOME Do is that it allowed me to do more things with
the keyboard in an efficient way. This isn't about the bug anymore, but
this is a related feature request. If there is a way to interact with
Docky entries without using the mouse, Docky would be more feature-rich
and that would allow us all to do things faster. On Konqueror, if you
press Alt, you will get a shortcut key for each link in the webpage.
Though I'm not sure that it's the best idea for a webpage (because some
webpages just have too many links among other issues), it would be a
helpful feature for Docky when executed well. For example, if you press
win+alt+F, Firefox's right click menu will be activated on Docky then
you can just click its mnemonic. That's going to make window management
a lot faster.

[Bug 452208] Re: devkit-disks-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in dbus_g_method_return_error()

2009-11-15 Thread Allan Caeg
I got a devkit-disks-daemon crash while installing Karmic 32bit. It
appeared at about 80%. I'm not sure if it's exactly the same bug and am
anxious about it. Maybe, I'm just being compulsive.

I didn't report it with apport. I just booted now on my fresh install
and googled devkit-disks-daemon. Is there a chance that it's another
bug. If so, how can it affect my system?

I feel like reformatting. hehe

[Bug 478391] [NEW] Right click menus on Docky, unlike typical GNOME apps, don't have mnemonic keys

2009-11-08 Thread Allan Caeg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-do

On typical GNOME applications, like the window list applet, there are
mnemonic keys that make operations faster. This is one of GNOME Do's
goals.

A new feature that can help satisfy this goal is to have mnemonic keys
on Docky's right click menus. I don't know what toolkit is used for this
and what can be done with this type of GUI, but it would be helpful if
there are mnemonic keys. For example, when Firefox's icon is right
clicked, the menu that pops out will have C in Close underlined,
which states that pressing alt+C would close Firefox.

Of all GNOME applications, Do needs this the most.

[Bug 478016] [NEW] Compiz's default settings make Ubuntu look slow

2009-11-07 Thread Allan Caeg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

On fresh installs of Ubuntu (those without Compiz settings yet), among
the first things I change are Compiz's speed settings. I adjust the
speed (and timesteps if available) of features like desktop wall, expo,
and scale to make them faster. I'm fine with the speed of minimize and
maximize, though.

With these settings, they made the desktop experience snappier for me
and people tell me that they find my system fast.

If please change if this isn't the right package for that.

[Bug 478021] [NEW] A different GTK+ theme for root apps can be useful

2009-11-07 Thread Allan Caeg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: human-theme

This is more of a usability suggestion that needs discussion than a bug,
maybe.

I'm aware that when you use a GTK+ theme, if it sits on both
/usr/share/themes and ~/.themes, you will have different looks for apps
ran as root and as the normal user. I used to have Shiki-Wise as the
root version for all my shiki themes to tell me that the certain app
is ran as root. It's just a hassle for me to implement that every time
so I can't maintain it. This could be the reason why this feature is
impractical to implement but a more solid way to materialize this could
be a good feature for Ubuntu.

Now, I'm thinking of having the Human GTK+ theme to automatically be in
the ~/.themes of every user and there's a different version of the theme
on /usr/share/themes that tells the user that the app is running as
root.

What can you say about this? :)

[Bug 478028] [NEW] GNOME Disk Utility uses web-like links instead of buttons. Confuses users

2009-11-07 Thread Allan Caeg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-disk-utility

Palimpsest Disk Utility successfully tells the user that certain texts
are links because it uses the underlined blue text convention. However,
this confuses the user by looking like a web link. I haven't seen this
convention used in GNOME in any other app.

I suggest using gtk+ buttons instead to avoid confusion and to be more
compliant to GNOME's standards.

I don't know where I can find it upstream. Please point this to the
right project if valid.

[Bug 476170] [NEW] Panel looks inconsistent when not all monochrome icons load earlier than the others

2009-11-05 Thread Allan Caeg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: humanity-icon-theme

This is related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/430277 . As mac_v
advised, this should be separate bug, which makes sense.

Yes, having monochrome icons reduces visual noise, but the visual
inconsistency it creates makes it impractical. I don't use Humanity
primarily because of this. My suggested fix is to stop using monochrome
icons altogether because the user is very likely to use application that
doesn't have such an icon. If there's a way to make all monochrome icons
appear on the right end and all colored icons appear on the left, that's
going to be great. However, that may be difficult to implement.

[Bug 468007] Re: Can't set other apps to be on indicator-applet by default

2009-11-03 Thread Allan Caeg
I think, our initial idea of tweaking the indicator-applet is through
the app's own settings dialog (which doesn't exist... yet?) is because
we know that this is a new app that is put on top of the desktop that we
always knew. If we regarded the app like libnotify, we could be more
inclined to change the notification settings on the app that uses it
like Pidgin, for example. Another thing is, the indicator applet sits on
our panels. If libnotify had a panel icon, I think, I would expect to be
able to tweak my notification settings on the GUI of libnotify as well.

I think, Mark's point is valid in putting the settings of the
notification on the app (like Evolution), but it would also be ideal to
add a configuration dialog for indicator-applet that can be accessed
through it's panel applet's right click menu. Think about how Pidgin
handles proxy settings. Yes, those settings should be global and set
using GNOME's tool for the job, but Pidgin still provides the GUI that
points the user to GNOME's proxy settings. This is also the case for
other browsers, IM clients, and other apps even in other platforms.

My suggestion is to have a configuration dialog for indicator-applet and
an option on the GUI of Evolution, Empathy, or whatever. If they can't
both have a unique GUI for the job (which *could* be useless), one of
them should at least point the user to the GUI where the setting can be
tweaked like how Pidgin configures proxy.

[Bug 470743] Re: PolicyKit unlock button text appears dissociated from key icon

2009-11-02 Thread Allan Caeg
I'm a usability enthusiast and an Ubuntu user at the same time. When I
read click to make changes, I didn't know what it meant. Having text
placed like that never seemed to be a convention. Also, even if it was a
convention, it's hard to interpret for first time users.

There's Help, Lock Icon, Click to make changes, and Close. All of
them are buttons except the Click to make changes text. What makes me
assume that the text is supposed to be associated to one of those
buttons and the one it is associated with is the one on the left? For
me, it's the metaphor that the icon represents. It took too much
analysis and I'm more savvy than the typical user.

What I suggest now is simply have a button with the text Make Changes
or something more fit if we can think of one.

the icon does is to unlock the settings.

More ideal would be to combine the icon-button and the non-reactive text into

 - With the button's tooltips saying Administrator password required to

[Bug 470684] [NEW] Touch pad doesn't respond while typing and for a moment when typing ends

2009-11-02 Thread Allan Caeg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

Touch pad doesn't respond while typing and for a moment when typing
ends.

Found this bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/27541 I believe, it's a new feature.
I never experienced this in versions older than Karmic.

However, I'm uncomfortable with it. I operate the computer quickly so I
easily shift from typing to using the touch pad.

I suggest fixing this by removing the extra milliseconds (after typing)
of deactivation or simply making this feature an option but not the
default.

[Bug 470733] [NEW] Setting an Away status on Pidgin doesn't put a Busy icon on Y!M

2009-11-02 Thread Allan Caeg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

Setting an Away status on Pidgin doesn't put a Busy icon on Y!M

I expect to have a busy icon set on my Y!M account whenever I set an
Away status. It is inconsistent because the indicator-applet-session
and Pidgin both have away icons. I think, this is because Y!M doesn't
have an Away equivalent. The closest equivalent would be the Busy
icon, which would be fit.

[Bug 470743] [NEW] key icon on users admin is hard to understand

2009-11-02 Thread Allan Caeg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

On users-admin, there is a key icon, which is supposed to authenticate
the administrator. Beside it is text that says Click to make changes.
The text seems out of place. It is hard to determine that the text on
the right of the key icon is what describes what it does.

What would be easier to understand would be having the icon and text on
the authenticate button. However, GNOME is veering away from that
convention. Because of this new trend, it could be better to simply have
the Click to make changes text on the authenticate button.

[Bug 468007] [NEW] Can't set other apps to be on indicator-applet by default

2009-11-01 Thread Allan Caeg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

On indicator applet, I see Empathy and Evolution by default. Apps like
Pidgin and Gwibber appear on the applet, but that occurs only if they
are opened by the user.

I was looking for a way to put those applications on the applet by
default and remove Empathy. However, it's either it is hard to find
(which is a usability issue) or the feature just doesn't exist.
Whichever, I believe, it is a bug. I would suggest having a preference
dialog that can be run through the right click menu of the applet's
notification area icon.

[Bug 468029] [NEW] Get Help Online and Report a Problem deserve attention in the installer slideshow

2009-11-01 Thread Allan Caeg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

The installer slideshow is a very useful feature for new users (and old
users alike). I've been using Ubuntu for years, but it still helped me
when I saw the slideshow. I found out about cool features that weren't
given attention.

The last part of the slideshow tells the user where to ask for help.
However, it wasn't pointed out that there are very handy features under
the Help menu of almost every GUI app. I believe that pointing out to
the user (new or old) that Get Help Online and Report a Problem
exist would be beneficial for bug management and helping users out. The
slideshow is a great place to inform users about this.

btw, I'm not sure if this is the right package for this issue. Please
edit if I'm wrong.

[Bug 70850] Re: [users-admin] show all users checkbox is gone and there is no way to view users with a UID of less than 1000

2009-11-01 Thread Allan Caeg
Any fix? I'm already on Karmic and it will be 2010 in a while. Just
kidding. Ranting won't help.

My problem is, on the Login Screen Settings dialog on Karmic, I can't
choose to log in automatically to my preferred user account because the
only one that appears is the one with the UID that's not less than 1000.
Enabling /apps/gnome-system-tools/users/show_all and doing

edit /etc/login.defs change UID_MIN 1000 to UID_MIN 500

edit /etc/gnome-system-tools/users/profiles changing each uid-min=1000

edit /etc/adduser.conf LAST_SYSTEM_UID=999 to 499 and FIRST_UID=1000 to
500 from http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3531723postcount=6

[Bug 464535] [NEW] Battery monitor on tray says Laptop battery is fully charged all the time

2009-10-30 Thread Allan Caeg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

On Karmic, the battery monitor on the system tray says Laptop battery
is fully charged all the time. However, when I click it, the drop-down
entry would state the right battery charged percentage.

Also, even when my system is set to hibernate when the charge is
critically low, it just shuts down when the battery charge runs out. Is
this a connected issue or do I have to report another bug?

Re: [Bug 429982] Re: Bright orange scroll bar is highly distracting

2009-09-23 Thread Allan Caeg
I agree with the OP. I saw screenshots and it seems that the scrollbar can
be obtrusive. I think, having a colorized scrollbar is preferred for
subtle colors (like the blue on the default Clearlooks).
I think, it is the rationale why the scrollbars on Shiki aren't colorized.

[Bug 404835] [NEW] Gwibber's asking for the GNOME keyring password seems to be unjustified

2009-07-26 Thread Allan Caeg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gwibber

Some users complain about Gwibber's asking for the GNOME keyring
password. I was among them until I realized what it was for.

This seems to be unjustified because GNOME keyring just shows the app
location gibberish. If asking for the password tells the user that it's
because Gwibber is accessing the saved username and password of the
user's microblogging accounts, the user would understand why the
password is being asked.

[Bug 374771] [NEW] First action choice for virtualbox machines is to copy to clipboard

2009-05-11 Thread Allan Caeg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-do

With the virtualbox plugin, I run my virtual machines directly with
GNOME Do. However, the first action choice if a VM is selected is to
copy it to clipboard.

It would be better if the first choice is to start the VM followed by
other VM actions.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
Package: gnome-do 0.8.1.3-0ubuntu2
ProcEnviron:
 LANG=en_PH.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: gnome-do
Uname: Linux 2.6.30-020630rc2-generic x86_64

** Affects: gnome-do (Ubuntu)
