Nautilus works as a different user, `sudo nautilus` launches it
correctly. So is it a configuration problem? Where is nautilus's
configuration files?

[Bug 460739] [NEW] Usplash flickers and fails to start X

2009-10-25 Thread Amr Hassan
Public bug reported:

At first I thought it was because of this bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/67826 but after I
applied the work around, my screen now keeps on flickering like a neon
light and X fails to start. Instead I get a login prompt.

Just to clarify, the workaround was that I edit /etc/usplash.conf values
to xres=1024 and yres=786 from the live iso and then I chrooted into my
hard drive and did a `update-initramfs -u`.

It's a fresh Karmic RC install. My machine has an nVidia graphics chip.

[Bug 451861] [NEW] evince displays distorted text in some documents

2009-10-14 Thread Amr Hassan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Evince sometimes displays text in documents in a very distorted and
annoying form, here's what I mean in screenshots.

This is a page of the book in google docs:
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/197580/distorted_evince/gdocs.jpg

and this is how it looks like in evince:
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/197580/distorted_evince/evince.jpg

and here's the actual book:
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/197580/distorted_evince/book.pdf

It happened to me several times before with many books and I used to
think that the books were corrupted until I uploaded the book to google
docs and found it intact.

Re: [Bug 421332] Re: Gwibber does not like my GConf values and I can't fix it

2009-08-30 Thread Amr Hassan
I know, but I can't go back to 1.2 again. The stable ppa still has 0.9.2 and
it won't work for some reason. Some webkit compatibility issues i think. It
displays bubbles but can't render the messages. No error messages are coming
out in any form.

[Bug 400445] [NEW] Very high IOWait because of init process

2009-07-16 Thread Amr Hassan
Public bug reported:

I've been facing general sluggishness on my desktop computer for a while
now, my desktop system monitor applet shows almost constant 100% IOWait
during these period of unresponsiveness. After a while of trying to pin
down the process causing that, I was advised to try pidstat -d, and
now I see that the process init is the only one with IO activity.

How can I investigate this problem further?
I'm using ubuntu jaunty on a Pentium-IV 3.0GHz desktop computer with 1 GB RAM

[Bug 400460] [NEW] Waking from hibernation should wake up from sleep too

2009-07-16 Thread Amr Hassan
Public bug reported:

This is how it happens:
* My laptop suspends after a while of inactivity.
* I press the power button that I have mapped to the hibernate action, it
hibernates.
* Later when I wake it up from hibernation, it wakes up then suspends again as
the state it where before going to hibernation.

I'm guessing this is kinda weird as upon hibernation the suspend-state
should be terminated.

I actually installed libgphoto2-2_2.4.5-1ubuntu1_i386 and

solve my sansa e260 problem. it was solved by the patched up libgphoto2
however.

Connecting the device now outputs this to my log:

[Bug 374050] [NEW] strange compiz behaviour on jaunty

2009-05-09 Thread Amr Hassan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I'm not really sure where's the problem. I have an intel graphics chip,
and running Jaunty with all the latest updates.

Upon logon, compositing is enabled and some desktop effects are enabled
like drop-shadow on windows, while others are not, like the application
switcher and minimize/maximize effects and the transparency on the
window decorator. They all seem to be enabled in ccsm however.

If I try to set Visual Effects to Normal from Appearance, It looks for a
hardware drive, flickers everything a few times then say that it's not
possible for me to enable desktop effects.

The only way that I can get my full desktop effects back is by reloading
the window manager twice from fusion-icon.

My graphics chip was blacklisted when I installed jaunty but now it's
not anymore, so back then I thought it was the reason for this odd
behaviour, I'm not even using the Option MigrationHeuristic greedy
option in xorg.conf.

[Bug 373644] [NEW] Generated tarballs do not include .desktop files

2009-05-08 Thread Amr Hassan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: monodevelop

Creating .desktop files and setting its options to be deployed to .desktop
application folder makes no difference, and tarballs are created ignoring the
file as if it never existed.
This used to be working fine on 1.0, but since 2.0 it's not any more.

[Bug 373932] [NEW] Ubuntu's installer's partition manager is too ambiguous

2009-05-08 Thread Amr Hassan
Public bug reported:

I have just installed Ubuntu to a wrong partition, formatting 80 GB of
data from my hard drive by mistake.

Looking back on what happened, I can say that the installer's partition
manager couldn't have been more ambiguous about my partition's info.
Failing to display basic information like my partitions' labels and my
hard drives' models, and displaying the partition sizes in megabytes
when they all exceed the 1GB barrier, making it very easy to get
confused with my several partitions/hard drives.

I think this is a serious issue, relying on the user to guess which
partition is which based only on their sizes (in megabytes) is
completely nonsense.

The Advanced partition manager of the installer has to be a little more
advanced than this, It has to:
1) Show clearly the partition's labels if present.
2) Show every textual information known about each hard drive, like its model
string.
3) Express units larger than 1024 MBs in GBs and larger than 1024 GB in TBs and
so on..

I really hope that you take this under serious consideration. I can't
begin to express how big the loss I've just encountered because of this.
