[Bug 94940] Re: mdns listed in nsswitch.conf causes excessive time for dns lookups

The issue of slow *reverse* lookups for IP addresses lacking a PTR
record in the DNS has nothing to do with Microsoft or .local.

I still don't see the point of doing mdns resolution of reverse
lookups at all.

[Bug 94940] Re: mdns listed in nsswitch.conf causes excessive time for dns lookups

2011-02-08 Thread Andreas Gustafsson
I just did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 (i386 desktop), and the bug
is still there. Specifically, logging in to the Ubuntu machine over a
LAN configured with 10.x.x.x addresses and a configured DNS server that
immediately returns an NXDOMAIN response for the reverse mappings of
those addresses, there is a 5-second delay before the ssh login
completes, due to Ubuntu's pointless attempt at reverse mapping the net
10 address of the originating machine using mdns. Removing the mdns4
entry from /etc/nsswitch.conf (but leaving mdns4_minimal) fixes the
problem - doing time ssh ubuntu-machine true, the elapsed time falls
from 5.03 seconds to 0.03 seconds.

[Bug 602963] Re: boot flag doesn't show as set in partitioner

2010-10-21 Thread Andreas Gustafsson
I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 i386 Server using manual
partitioning. When I create a single ext4 file system covering the
entire disk, the bootable flag of the new file system is shown as
off. When I select it and press enter, the text Please wait...
Computing the new state of the partition table... briefly flashes on
the screen, but the state of the bootable flag remains off.

I have not verified whether or not the flag actually changes on disk,
but I am unable to make the user interface display it as on.

2010-04-14 Thread Andreas Gustafsson
damaan - the behavior you report suggests that you are in fact having
DNS problems, but that they are unrelated to mdns and this bug. Perhaps
you have addresses in your /etc/resolv.conf that do not point to working
DNS servers.

[Bug 94940] Re: mdns listed in nsswitch.conf causes excessive time for dns lookups

2010-03-19 Thread Andreas Gustafsson
Disabling mdns only for reverse lookups outside the local subnet(s)
would not solve the problem. The test3.c example program uses a non-
local, reserved address because that's a convenient way to illustrate
that the problem is not caused by the local DNS configuration, but the
actual delays I'm experiencing occur when connecting to an Ubuntu host
from a non-Ubuntu system on a local subnet, for example with ssh,
causing he Ubuntu host to do a reverse lookup of a local address. The
standard DNS reverse lookup for that address resolves to NXDOMAIN in a
few milliseconds, but since the connecting non-Ubuntu system is not
running an mdns responder, the subsequent (pointless, IMO) mdns lookup
takes several seconds to time out.

[Bug 94940] Re: mdns listed in nsswitch.conf causes excessive time for dns lookups

2010-03-18 Thread Andreas Gustafsson
The problem *does* occur with non-broken DNS servers, too. I just tried
the test program test3.c attached to my comment from 2007-05-13 on a
system booted from a Lucid alpha3 live CD, and it still takes more than
five seconds to execute. The system was directly querying a BIND 9 DNS
server, and there was no cheap home router involved. This is trivial
to reproduce; please try it.

Why is Ubuntu doing mDNS lookups for reverse mappings, anyway? I can
see the utility of doing mDNS for forward mappings, but doing mDNS for
reverse mappings seems not only harmful (being the cause of this bug),
but also quite pointless.

Running successful now with 2.6.31-16-generic and network-manager

Breaks if I install the latest 0.8 package of nm.

I tried the jaunty alpha 5 i386 desktop live CD, and the bug is still

_not_ return to its original resolution.

[Bug 138087] Re: [RS482] Changing screen resolution garbles display

2009-03-05 Thread Andreas Gustafsson
I just tried the jaunty alpha 5 i386 desktop live CD, and the bug is
still there: any attempt to change the screen resolution still causes
the display to be garbled as in the screenshots I attached earlier.

Also, since the display still doesn't revert to its old resolution after
a timeout when you fail to confirm the new resolution in the screen
resolution dialog (see bug #97), you still have no easy way to
recover when you end up with the garbled display.

Since bug #188660 is now fixed, I don't really _need_ to use safe
graphics mode anymore. But it would still be nice if it worked...

Yes - when I set System-Preferences-Appearance-Visual Effects to None,

[Bug 331472] [NEW] Garbled dekstop background with 8.10 and ATI Xpress

2009-02-19 Thread Andreas Gustafsson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

I tried booting the Ubuntu 8.10 i386 live CD on a machine with a MSI
RS482M4 motherboard, connecting the VGA output of the on-board graphics
adapter to an iiyama ProLite E380s 1024x768 LCD display (same machine
and display as bug #138084, bug #138087, bug #188660, and my
confirmation of bug #97).

With this Ubuntu version, the live CD successfully boots into a desktop,
but the desktop background is all black with a large white rectangle in
the middle of the screen. When opening menus or dragging windows, they
leave droppings on the background, consisting of enlarged portions of
other windows (I will attach some screenshots demonstrating this
shortly).

[Bug 188660] Re: Hardy live CD loops between login and desktop on ATI Xpress cards - compiz crashes Xorg

2009-02-19 Thread Andreas Gustafsson
Does this issue still occur with Intrepid or Jaunty, or is it a Hardy-
only issue?

I tried the 8.10 i386 live CD, and this particular problem no longer
occurs; the machine now boots into a desktop rather than going into a
login/dekstop loop. However, that desktop is having other problems; I
just filed a separate bug report (bug #331472) about them.

Also, Andreas please run 'sudo lspci -vvnn lspci-vvnn.txt' and
attach that file.

Attached to bug #331472.

[Bug 222297] Re: [hardy] screen resolution: Use previous settings fails

2008-09-08 Thread Andreas Gustafsson
I can confirm the reported behavior of the display failing to return to its
original
resolution after a 20-second timeout. I can't say what happens if you click
on a button in the dialog, because when I have changed the resolution,
my screen is garbled because of bug #138087 such that I can't see any
buttons to click.

In combination, these two bugs (#138087 and #97) mean that if I
make any attempt to change the resolution, my screen ends up garbled
and I have no way to recover other than killing the X server or rebooting.

[Bug 188660] Re: live CD loops between login and desktop on ATI Xpress cards

2008-04-27 Thread Andreas Gustafsson
Could this be a compiz problem, causing the X server to crash?

Could well be.

Can you please try to get some log files, like Xorg.0.log?

I tried, but without much luck. sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop didn't stop gdm,
as you suspected. I also tried killing the gdm process (or processes, as
ps showed a parent and child gdm process), as follows:

On my first try, I just killed the parent gdm; this caused the X server to die
immediately, leaving me in text mode but with no shell prompt. I switched
to a different virtual console with alt-ctrl-f1; this one had a shell, and I
typed
startx at the shell prompt. This started an X server with the default stipple
background and X cursor, but no Gnome desktop. Should I have run
startx as root?

On my second try, I killed both gdm processes by listing both on the kill
command line. This caused the machine to lock up (the desktop remained
visible, but did not respond to keyboard or mouse commands), and I had to
reboot.

Anything else I could try?

[Bug 188660] Re: live CD loops between login and desktop on ATI Xpress cards

2008-04-27 Thread Andreas Gustafsson
You can try to login choosing a Failsafe Terminal session in the
login window

That worked. I booted the live CD with the default settings (no safe graphics
mode),
let it run through the countdown - black screen - countdown loop a couple of
times,
and then aborted the countdown by choosing Failsafe Terminal.

I will attach copies of /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old and /var/log/gdm/:0.log.1 saved
from the failsafe terminal session. The latter ends with an assertion failure
from the
X server; I assume that is what's causing the crash:

  X: r300_emit.c:403: r300EmitArrays: Assertion
`((inputs_bitset)[((_TNL_ATTRIB_COLOR0) / (sizeof (GLuint) * 8))] (1

[Bug 67152] Re: [network-admin] WEP doesn't work when setting key using network-admin

2008-04-27 Thread Andreas Gustafsson
Trying the 8.04 live CD, it is still the case that the network does not work
after
configuring the WEP key using network-admin, even though many details of
the user interface and program behavior have changed since I originally
reported this as bug 67152. I am still using the same hardware.

These are the steps I followed to reproduce the problem:

Boot the 8.04 live CD
Click on the network icon in the top menu bar
Select Manual configuration
Select Wireless connection
Click Properties
Disable roaming mode
Network name: gson (my network ESSID)
Password type: WEP key (hexadecimal)
Network password: (my WEP key)
Configuration: Automatic configuration (DHCP)
Click OK

After these steps, /etc/network/interfaces does contain the
correct ESSID and WEP key for ath0, but according to
ifconfig ath0 and iwconfig ath0, the ath0 interface
has not been configured with that ESSID and key.

If I then manually run /etc/init.d/networking restart, the
interface gets configured correctly and starts working.

Also, if after clicking on the networking icon I don't
select Manual configuration but instead simply select
my network from the list of detected networks and follow
the dialogs from there, I end up with a working configuration
without having to manually run /etc/init.d/networking restart.

[Bug 188660] Re: Hardy alpha 4 live CD loops between login and desktop

2008-04-26 Thread Andreas Gustafsson
Is it safe to say this has been fixed, whatever the cause?

No, it has not been fixed. I just downloaded ubuntu-8.04-desktop-i386.iso
and booted it as a live CD, and it's still looping.

If anything, the problem has gotten worse: with alpha 4, the desktop background
and menu bars appeared briefly before I got thrown back to the login countdown,
but now they don't: I just get the countdown, a few seconds of black screen,
countdown, black screen, countdown, etc.

So e.g. chroot /mnt/the_failed_upgrade_root does not work and bash

Though the system doesn't boot, running bash chrooted to it worked.
Using that method, I tried what you suggested in an earlier message:

could you please try running dpkg -i on the modules-init-tools
 package in /var/cache/apt/archives

I assume you mean module-init-tools. There were two such packages:

  -r--r--r-- 1 root root86570 2007-08-20 16:21
module-init-tools_3.3-pre3-1ubuntu7_i386.deb
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root87414 2007-10-05 20:04
module-init-tools_3.3-pre4-2ubuntu4_i386.deb

I chose the latter one. This is what happened:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/var/cache/apt/archives# dpkg -i
module-init-tools_3.3-pre4-2ubuntu4_i386.deb
(Reading database ... 36359 files and directories currently installed.)

  Segmentation fault (core dumped)
  dpkg: error processing module-init-tools (--install):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 139
  Errors were encountered while processing:
   module-init-tools

Rerunning dpkg under strace -f revealed that the core dump is from
/usr/sbin/update-rc.d. I located the core file in /etc/rc0.d/core.

Running /usr/sbin/update-rc.d module-init-tools start 15 S . by hand
also causes a core dump.

I will attach the part of the strace -f output pertaining to the
/usr/sbin/update-rc.d process.

Since /usr/sbin/update-rc.d is a perl script, I note that the
installed version of perl is 5.8.8-7ubuntu3.1 according to
dpkg-query --show.

[Bug 188660] [NEW] Hardy alpha 4 live CD loops between login and desktop

2008-02-03 Thread Andreas Gustafsson
Public bug reported:

I downloaded the Hardy Heron alpha 4 CD and tried booting it,
choosing the default Start or install Ubuntu option.

The CD boots fine up to the login screen, which says User ubuntu will
login in 10 seconds and does the 10-second countdown. Then the
desktop background appears, the menubars at the top and bottom
of the screen briefly appear (but with a smaller font than usual), and
then I'm thrown back to the login screen and the 10-second
countdown starts anew. This repeats ad infinitum.

This is the same hardware configuration as in #138084: an MSI
RS482M4 motherboard with the VGA output of the on-board graphics
connected to an iiyama ProLite E380s 1024x768 LCD display.

The machine boots 7.04 without problem.
