[Bug 1421975] [NEW] Re-login fails

2015-02-14 Thread Andreas Simon

After locking the screen or suspending my computer, I cannot re-login.
Though my password is correct (there ist no verification problem shown),
the login screen does not disappear, but requests my password again.

[Bug 833339] Re: Unity: New App switcher is shown stacked under regular windows

2011-11-02 Thread Andreas Simon
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 805087 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/805087

I get this issue constantly with all updates applied as of today:
(1) Start a new desktop session
(2) Open a full-screen Thunderbird on workspace 4
After doing those steps there is about 50% that Unity renders it's windows
below all other windows.

Also, it not only affects the launcher, but also the dash/lenses and
the task switcher (ALT-Tab). If those get constantly rendered below all
other windows it renders Unity unusable.

[Bug 400464] Re: Kernel fails to start due to error size reporting in device-mapper.

2009-07-25 Thread Andreas Simon
For me the issue vanished with linux-image-2.6.31-4-generic
(2.6.31-4.22).

During boot there are still these warnings:
Jul 25 12:29:16 vrock kernel: [9.259545] device-mapper: table: 252:6: sda
too small for target
Jul 25 12:29:16 vrock kernel: [9.259547] device-mapper: table: 252:6: sdb

Jul 25 12:29:16 vrock kernel: [9.278197] device-mapper: table: 252:6: sdb

but the boot process doesn't halt anymore after printing these warnings
and the system boots up fine.

2009-07-20 Thread Andreas Simon
The same happens here with an Intel ICH8 Raid. Ubuntu itself is not
installed on any of the raid drivers (sda and sdb), but raid partitions
get mounted later.

This problem is not present in the kernel of Karmic alpha2 (2.6.30), but
appeared after the update of the current Karmic kernel 2.6.31-3.

[Bug 341850] [NEW] Missing Shortcuts for switching to workspace n, n2

2009-03-12 Thread Andreas Simon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

There are only keyboard shortcuts for
* switch to workspace 1
* switch to workspace 2

I have 4 workspaces and thus cannot assign keyboard bindings for the
other 2 workspaces.

Distribution:
Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)

Packages:
gnome-control-center 1:2.25.92-0ubuntu3
compiz 1:0.8.2-0ubuntu2

How to reproduce:
0. Have desktop effects on, i.e. run compiz instead of metacity
1. right-click on the workspace switcher applet
2. choose Preferences
3. choose 4 columns and 1 row
4. close the preferences dialog
5. From the gnome menubar choose System - Preferences - Keyboard
Shortcuts

What to expect:
The ability to define keyboard shortcuts to switch to every single workspace

What actually happens:
There is only the possibility to configure shortcuts for switching to
workspaces 1 and 2.
No switch to workspace 3, no switch to workspace 4.

The same is true for move window to workspace n shortcuts.

[Bug 341850] Re: Missing Shortcuts for switching to workspace n, n2

2009-03-12 Thread Andreas Simon
I should mention that the configs are there and accessible through gconf-editor:
The key names are /apps/metacity/global_keybindings/switch_to_workspace_n for 0
 n  13.

gnome-keybinding-properties seems just to be hardcoded to show only
bindings for 2 workspaces, which is the default on Ubuntu.

If it's too much work to read the number of current workspaces and show
all respective options, I think it would be better to show the
keybindings for all 12 possible workspaces then only 2.

[Bug 238755] Re: 'Account has expired' message when adding a new user

2008-07-20 Thread Andreas Simon
I have the same error, when trying to use chfn. This also has the neat
effect, that it breaks installation of mysql-server, as the pre-install
script fails.

This is the command, which fails during the mysql-server pre-installation
script:
$ sudo /usr/bin/chfn -f 'MySQL Server' mysql
Your account has expired; please contact your system administrator
chfn: PAM authentication failed

I get the same error when trying to chfn any other user or use adduser:

$ sudo adduser foobar
Adding user `foobar' ...
Adding new group `foobar' (1001) ...
Adding new user `foobar' (1001) with group `foobar' ...
Creating home directory `/home/foobar' ...
Copying files from `/etc/skel' ...
Enter new UNIX password:
Retype new UNIX password:
passwd: password updated successfully
Your account has expired; please contact your system administrator
chfn: PAM authentication failed
adduser: `/usr/bin/chfn foobar' returned error code 1. Exiting.

I too started with a non-disabled root acount, because I installed Ubuntu via
debootstrap (no dmraid support in any of Ubuntu's installers).
Thus I locked the root account via 'passwd -l root' later just as aledin did.

[Bug 238755] Re: 'Account has expired' message when adding a new user

2008-07-20 Thread Andreas Simon
Yes, this is an configuration issue. By default Ubuntu's root account is
disabled and chfn should surely handle this configuration and just work.
But it does not.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo tells to execute 'passwd -l
root' to re-disable the root account. As I understand it this is
Ubuntu's default configuration and chfn fails to work with it.

[Bug 247027] Re: initramfs prompts because of dmraid

2008-07-17 Thread Andreas Simon
The same here. The dmraid devices (in my case
/dev/mapper/isw_bgjcdcfheh_volume*) are not there when the boot scripts try to
mount rootfs.
Only /mapper/control is there.

dmraid -ay at the busybox prompt creates all dmraid devices under
/dev/mapper/ (and triggers udev to create my LVM volume devices which
sit on top of the dmraid array) and the system boots fine after exiting
the busybox.

BTW, this works fine under Debian Testing and SID, so it's probably
introduced by Ubuntu specific patches. It also worked fine unter Gutsy.

[Bug 247984] Re: Intrepid: ia32-lib conflict with nvidia-glx-177

2008-07-16 Thread Andreas Simon
Maybe an other solution could be the usage of update-alternatives
instead of dpkg-divert. But that requires that all OpenGL providing
packages cooperate and probably has other problems too, of which I may
not be aware of.

Maybe someone will come up with an better idea, but for the meantime:

[Bug 156210] Re: Please update Virtualbox to 1.5.4

2008-01-02 Thread Andreas Simon
Looks like the new version (1.5.4-dfsg-1) is out:
http://packages.debian.org/sid/virtualbox-ose

This new version should also be able to build against kernel 2.6.24
which is needed for Hardy.

BTW, shouldn't the status be 'in progress' if someone is already working
on a merge?

Also I think because of bug Bug #179807, the importance should not be
just 'wishlist'. Hardy's current virtualbox-ose version is incompatible
with the new default kernel and needs an update to 1.5.4.

[Bug 179807] Re: virtualbox cannot initiate due to vboxdrv missing from kernel modules [x86/hardy]

2008-01-02 Thread Andreas Simon
Yes, the problem is Hardy's current version of virtualbox-ose is not compatible
with the new default kernel (2.6.24).
Hardy's virtualbox-ose package needs an upgrade to version 1.5.4 to be able to
build against hardy's kernel.

This is already being worked on, see bug #156210 .

[Bug 179535] Hardy: broken fontconfig configuration

2007-12-31 Thread Andreas Simon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: fontconfig-config

SUMMARY:
fontconfig-config's default configuration is broken.
This is in Hardy, fontconfig-config version 2.5.0-2ubuntu2.

DETAIL:
fontconfig-config installs configuration files under /etc/fonts/conf.d.

But all config files should be installed under /etc/fonts/conf.avail.
The conf.d dir should only contain symlinks to files under conf.avail.

These are the misplaced files:
/etc/fonts/conf.d/autohint.conf
/etc/fonts/conf.d/no-bitmaps.conf
/etc/fonts/conf.d/no-sub-pixel.conf
/etc/fonts/conf.d/sub-pixel.conf
/etc/fonts/conf.d/unhinted.conf
/etc/fonts/conf.d/yes-bitmaps.conf

Also note that this configuration is conflicting and confusing.

1.) We have no-bitmaps and at the same time yes-bitmaps. There should be
only a single symlink to either /etc/fonts/conf.avail/70-no-bitmaps.conf
or /etc/fonts/conf.avail/70-yes-bitmaps.conf.

2.) We have sub-pixel and at the same time no-sub-pixel. There should be
only a single symlink to either /etc/fonts/conf.avail/10-no-sub-pixel.conf
or /etc/fonts/conf.avail/10-sub-pixel-rgb.conf.

autohinted and hinted should also be symlinks to
/etc/fonts/conf.avail/10-autohint.conf and
/etc/fonts/conf.avial/10-unhinted.conf.

These errors seems to got introduced by Ubuntu's patches.
Debian's fontconfig-config 2.5.0-2 doesn't install non-symlink files under
/etc/fonts/conf.d.

Cheers and a happy New Year.

I would be a good idea to rebuild all packages depending on libungif4

packages because libungif4 and libgif4 cannot be installed side by side.

Yes, many paths in /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/kde are wrong for

[Bug 131975] [Sync request] Please sync qtcurve (0.52.3-1) from Debian unstable

2007-08-12 Thread Andreas Simon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-style-qtcurve

These are 3 Packages (I didn't filed separate bug reports because it would be
bad to only sync part of these widget style packages, I hope that's okay):
- kde-style-qtcurve
- gtk2-engines-qtcurve
- qtcurve

Versions in Gutsy:
- gtk2-engines-qtcurve: 0.52-1
- kde-style-qtcurve: 0.52-1
- qtcurve: 0.52-1

Latest Versions in Debian Unstable:
- gtk2-engines-qtcurve: 0.52.3-1
- kde-style-qtcurve: 0.52.3-1
- qtcurve: 0.52.3-1

Amongst minor cosmetic changes on the theme and performance improvements the
important changes are:
kde-style-qtcurve:
  * Fix crash when slider color == button. (A crashed widget style is rather
confusing for people who don't know what happened)
  * Fix amarok menus!

gtk2-engines-qtcuve:
   * Fix blanked out widgets in tovid.
   * Fix DeVeDe crash when 'fix parentless dialogs' is enabled.

This would also fix launchpad bug #126577 .

Here are the complete changelogs between the Gutsy version and Debian
unstable:

 kde-style-qtcurve  (0.52.3-1) unstable; urgency=low

   * Don't lighten border of disabled check/radio buttons.
   * Lighten trough of disabled slider.
   * Modify khtml check to also check to see if widget name == __khtml
   * Store khtml widgets in a map, to speed up checking.
   * Fix shadow on comboboxes.
   * Draw background of checked menuitem icons as per KDE4.

kde-style-qtcurve (0.52.2-1) unstable; urgency=low

   New upstream version

   [0.52.2]

   * Fix crash when slider color == button.

   [0.52.1]

   * Draw emphasis around menus when not lightening.
   * Use button colors to border entry fields.
   * Don't allow scrollbars to be recolored.
   * Fix amarok menus!

 gtk2-engines-qtcurve  (0.52.3-1) unstable; urgency=low

   0.52.3
   * Fix 1st stripe on vertical progress bar.
   * Fix very small progress bar chunks.
   * Fix blanked out widgets in tovid.
   * Fix DeVeDe crash when 'fix parentless dialogs' is enabled.

   0.52.2
   * Don't lighten border of disabled check/radio buttons.

[Bug 122491] Re: kpdf fails to open certain password prottected files

2007-06-28 Thread Andreas Simon
The same case was reported upstream at
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=142140 .
I quote from there: That file is not a pdf file, PDF files must end with %%EOF
and this one ends with %%EO, once corrected the file works correctly.

So I would say, your bank has a bug in the code which generates these
PDF files. The last character is missing.

BTW, the same happens with Evince, the default PDF reader from Gnome, it
doesn't open this invalid PDF file too.

[Bug 51879] Re: default config doesn't rotate syslog al

2007-06-25 Thread Andreas Simon
I'll mark this as invalid.

It's right that the log files mentioned in Dave's bug report are not
rotated by logrotate.

The reason is that sysklogd already comes with cron jobs to rotate these
files itself. So logrotate is not needed to rotate these files too. If
logrotate would include these logs they would get rotated two times,
once by logrotate and once by sysklogd's cron jobs.

Also sysklogd and anacron are part of every default installation, so the
mentioned  log files get rotated
and the default configuration very sane in this regard without an additional
dependency on a log file rotater liker logrotate.

If you still think this is a bug, please feel free to reopen this bug
report. Thanks.

[Bug 121260] Re: devscripts must depend on fakeroot

Does devscripts really need a hard dependency on fakeroot?
debuild can also be used as root (not uncommon to do under a chroot

Currently devscripts recommends fakeroot. Isn't this better than a hard
dependency given that debuild can be used without fakeroot?

[Bug 120350] Re: [kubuntu] konqueror: cannot create a folder if a file of the same name already exists

2007-06-21 Thread Andreas Simon
Actually this is expected behaviour on Linux.

You cannot have a file and a directory with the same name (on file
system level, both, normal files and directories are 'files' and two in
a directory can not have the same name), just as you cannot have two
directories or two text files with the same name.

You will find this restriction not only when using Konqueror but with
every file manager or the command line because it's intrinsic to
Linux/Unix file systems.

I will thus mark this bug report as 'invalid'. If you disagree and still
think this is a bug, please feel free to reopen this report. Thank you.

[Bug 65302] Re: Package does not contain the rbrcc tool

2007-06-09 Thread Andreas Simon
I think libqt0-ruby1.8-qt4 (1.4.6-0ubuntu1) is now obsoleted by libqt4-ruby1.8
(1.4.7-4).
libqt4-ruby1.8 is not affected from this bug and also follows the
Debian-Maintainer-Field Spec.

But is this really the case? If yes than libqt4-ruby1.8 should probably have
'replaces' set against libqt0-ruby1.8-qt4
and the later should be removed from the archive.

[Bug 117388] missing header file in libpoppler-qt-dev

2007-05-28 Thread Andreas Simon
Public bug reported:

libpoppler-qt-dev 0.5.4-4ubuntu1 in current Gutsy is missing a header file:
poppler-link-qt3.h

poppler-qt.h includes poppler-link-qt3.h but the package doesn't install
poppler-link-qt3.h.
So all packages which use poppler-qt.h fail to compile.

[Bug 83009] Re: sky2 transmit timeout and soft lockup detected on CPU#0!

2007-04-14 Thread Andreas Simon
Tim, thank you for your work. Sadly, like Darren, I too encountered
soft-lockups with that sky2.ko.2.6.20-14 (as with a complete vanilla
2.6.21-rc6 kernel). It's slightly better with this version. Removing the
module and reloading it again makes the network work again. With earlier
versions of the driver I often had to reboot because nearly everything
segfaulted after a soft-lockup (unable to handle kernel paging request
at virtual address ).

Also I tested Marvell's non-free open-source upstream driver for several days
and stressed it with downloading several Linux distro images while keeping the
CPU high with compile jobs and [EMAIL PROTECTED] No softlockups, no nothing.
That driver seems to be stable. If anyone wants to install it (download link in
a comment above): the first line of the install.sh script needs to be changed
from
#!/bin/sh
to
#!/bin/bash
to make it work. Further you need the kernel-header package installed for your
kernel, i.e. linux-headers-2.6.20-14-generic and set a link from /usr/src/linux
to these headers, for example
$ sudo ln -s /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.20-14-generic /usr/src/linux
After that, the install.sh script should work fine. Choose the option 1 for
'installation', it will afterwards give the options to either remove or disable
(it renames it) the existing sky2 driver, both options should work.

[Bug 78939] Re: boot hangs polling for the root fs when using lvm on dmraid

2007-04-11 Thread Andreas Simon
I just set up a machine where rootfs is also on a lvm on top of dmraid
(an Intel ich8r board here) and get the same error.

It looks that when the init script tries to mount the rootfs the /dev/mapper/
devices are not there yet.
When doing a 'dmraid -ay' by hand it takes around 1-2 seconds till the device
nodes are all created.

[Bug 83009] Re: sky2 transmit timeout and soft lockup detected on CPU#0!

2007-04-08 Thread Andreas Simon
In the meantime I encountered several soft lockups with linux image
2.6.20-14.22 too. It seems this bug is not fixed with tha latest sky2
upstream changes.

Currently I test the Yukon driver (sk98lin) from Marvell, which can be
downloaded from  http://www.marvell.com/drivers/driverDisplay.do?dId=153pId=36
It looks rock stable so far, but it's too early to say that the soft-lockup bug
is not there.

[Bug 83009] Re: sky2 transmit timeout and soft lockup detected on CPU#0!

2007-03-31 Thread Andreas Simon
Lauri, it could also be that your problem is a different one. At least
some lockups seems to be highly related to sky2 and network traffic.

Anyway, since the 3 days I run linux-image-2.6.20-13-generic version
2.6.20-13.21 I haven't encountered any new lockups. Maybe the problem is
already fixed in that new kernel? Do other people still have lockups
with the latest kernel version?

If yes, then hopefully the next Ubuntu kernel will fix them. In the
changelog [1] of Ben Collin's git are several updates for the sky2
driver.

[Bug 87745] Re: Root fs on LVM fails to boot

2007-03-23 Thread Andreas Simon
I just saw that in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-lvm.rules the device is tested
against ENV{ID_FS_TYPE}==lvm*|LVM* to trigger the vgchange/vgscan.

But
$ grep ID_FS_TYPE /var/log/udev
ID_FS_TYPE=ext3
ID_FS_TYPE=vfat
ID_FS_TYPE=swap
ID_FS_TYPE=ntfs
ID_FS_TYPE=ext3
ID_FS_TYPE=ext3
ID_FS_TYPE=reiserfs
ID_FS_TYPE=reiserfs
ID_FS_TYPE=reiserfs

No lvm device seems to have the string 'lvm' in it's ID_FS_TYPE.
Could this be related?

Here is the full udev event for one of my LVM partitions:

UDEV  [1174653621.853796] add@/block/dm-1

DEVNAME=/dev/mapper/main_vg-opt_lv

ignore it. ;-)

[Bug 51879] Re: default config doesn't rotate syslog al

2007-03-07 Thread Andreas Simon
I think in the default configuration sysklogd will rotate the mentioned
logfiles itself, not logrotate. This is because logrotate is no longer
part of the default installation.

The sysklogd package comes with the cron jobs /etc/cron.daily/sysklogd
and /etc/cron.weekly/sysklogd. These rotate syslog daily and

/var/log/mail.warn
/var/log/uucp.log
/var/log/user.log
/var/log/daemon.log
/var/log/messages
/var/log/debug
/var/log/auth.log
/var/log/mail.err
/var/log/mail.log
/var/log/kern.log
/var/log/lpr.log
/var/log/mail.info

weekly. Thus logrotate doesn't need to rotate them too.

[Bug 72117] Re: Stack Smashing Prevents Use

2007-03-07 Thread Andreas Simon
Here is a debdiff which fixes the issue here.
In src/backend/back_linux.c I changed the line
if(sscanf(buffer,%s %d %d,name, size, used) != 3) continue;
to
if(sscanf(buffer,%19s %d %d,name, size, used) != 3) continue;
to prevend a overflow of name[].

I attached a debdiff and will also notify upstream about this issue.

[Bug 46418] Re: nvclock need no root

2007-03-07 Thread Andreas Simon
Can this not also be restriced by changing the permissions of
/dev/nvidia* ?

I think there is not much security gained if nclock can be run only by
root but the device to speak directly to the nvidia hardware has still
write-permission for all users.

[Bug 75753] Re: Wrong group for IDE cdrom/cdwriter/dvd devices

2007-03-03 Thread Andreas Simon
Patrice, you are right. Nautilus works because it accesses my DVD-writer
through /dev/scd0. But if I start it as a user who is in group cdrom but
not in group floppy it fails too. The default user is member of both
groups, so it doesn't have any impact that scd0's group is floppy
instead of cdrom. But it's still wrong.

[Bug 86156] Re: Kernel 2.6.20-8 cannot mount SATA root on ASUS P5B VM

2007-03-02 Thread Andreas Simon
I have the very same modprobe crash but with a Gigabyte 965P DS4
mainboard, which has the same Intel 965 chipset as your Asus mainboard.

I don't have any SATA hard discs connected, the only SATA device here is
a SATA DVD burner. My harddiscs are IDE drives which are connected to
the motherboards JMicron 20360/20363 AHCI Controller (AHCI is turned
off, it runs in IDE mode).

The last working kernel here is linux-image-2.6.20-6-generic
2.6.20-6.11. Every other kernel thereafter produces the crash from
comment #1.

[Bug 86156] Re: Kernel 2.6.20-8 cannot mount SATA root on ASUS P5B VM

2007-03-02 Thread Andreas Simon
Forgot to mention:
If I boot with break=mount the crash happens and there are no /dev/hd*
devices nor any other harddisc devices under /dev. It looks like some chipset
driver crashes or something like that, so no devices (IDE or SATA) are detected
or accessible.

[Bug 87745] Root fs on LVM fails to boot

2007-02-25 Thread Andreas Simon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lvm2

Having the root filesystem on LVM fails to boot on current feisty.

I am not sure this is a duplicate of either #85617 or #83832. 85617
could be a bootloader misconfiguration and 83832 involves LVM on RAID.

What happens:
During boot, the system hangs for a couple of minutes and then presents a
BusyBox with the only error message being /bin/sh: can't access tty; job
control turned off, which doesn't seem to be related to the problem at hand.
At this point there are no lvm devices under /dev.

When I do 'lvm vgscan' followed by 'lvm vgchange -ay; exit' the boot
process continues as expected and everything is working fine.

(Currently I mount usually with 'break=mount' appended to grub's kernel
line to circumvent the several minutes long timeout)

More details:
My root filesystem is on a simple LVM on an IDE harddisc.

The bootline from grub's menu.lst is
/vmlinuz-2.6.20-8-generic root=/dev/mapper/main_vg-root_lv quiet splash
and the rootfs line in /etc/fstab is
/dev/mapper/main_vg-root_lv / ext3 noatime,user_xattr,errors=remount-ro 0 1

The problem started 2 or 3 weeks ago. I am sorry that I didn't tracked
down which new packages caused this.

[Bug 85834] Evolution alarm notify should not autostart in KDE

2007-02-17 Thread Andreas Simon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

evolution-alarm-notify gets automatically started in KDE sessions.

This is usually unwished for because KDE comes with it's own alarm
notification system.

Proposed fix:
Add a
OnlyShowIn=GNOME;
line in /etc/xdg/autostart/evolution-alarm-notify.desktop

This is in current Feisty and only appears if you have evolution (for
example as part of ubuntu-desktop) and KDE installed together.

This issue was introduced in kdelibs (4:3.5.6-0ubuntu4) with the patch
kubuntu_68_xdg_autostart.diff

PS: I dunno much about XFCE. If Evolution is also the default PIM application
of XFCE, the above line should read
OnlyShowIn=GNOME;XFCE;
as in most other files under /etc/xdg/autostart

[Bug 81123] Re: Qt3 picks DejaVu Sans Condensed erroneously

2007-02-02 Thread Andreas Simon
On my configuration the wronly selected font leads to colour bleeding
which makes the rendering very ugly.

This is the changelog entry from Debian's libqt3 version 3.3.7-2.

* debian/patches/61_fcfontmatch_fontwidth_fix.dpatch
   Fix font matching with fontconfig. This resolves inconsistency with
   determining font width (e.g. Dejavu Sans Condensed may get selected
   instead of Book for Sans Serif font) for default fonts (Sans Serif,
   Serif and Monospace). This bug is very important because it makes
   default KDE fonts look ugly in most cases.
