[Bug 1020856] Re: ffmpeg vs libav

2012-07-05 Thread Andres Mejia
This bug merits the opinion status. If ffmpeg was chosen to be in the
Debian/Ubuntu repositories, there would be (without a doubt) another set
of users who would have opened bugs complaining that libav should be in
the repositories because of opinions X, Y, Z, and so on.

Libav was chosen to be in the repositories. There are emails in Ubuntu's
technical board mailing list and in Debian's mailing lists explaining
why libav was chosen. If anyone really wants to see ffmpeg in the
repositories, then ffmpeg or libav or both have to rename their
libraries.

And about ffmpeg stability, ffmpeg is practically all of libav's
codebase with extra features merged in. If ffmpeg is stable, it is
thanks to libav.

[Bug 939863] Re: Warning message from ffmpeg program needs update

2012-05-12 Thread Andres Mejia
Reinhard, would you mind nominating this bug?

** Description changed:

- As in This program is not developed anymore and is only provided for

- FFmpeg is certainly still being developed, why the need to provide a
misleading message? If you can't speak the truth then don't at all.
- Come on guys - grow up a little
+ The warning message from the ffmpeg program needs to be updated. It should

[Bug 939863] Re: When users run ffmpeg whatever they are presented with a message that is somewhat erroneous completely childish

2012-03-23 Thread Andres Mejia
Reinhard, this definitely should be worded better. I believe the proper
term to use that everyone (users, developer, system adminstrators, etc.)
understand is 'deprecated.'

Here's my suggestion.

*** THIS PROGRAM IS DEPRECATED ***
This program will be removed in a future release. Please use avconv instead
(see Changelog for the list of incompatible changes).

The compatibility purposes is implied with the term 'deprecated' and
it's now clear that it will be removed in the future (thus everyone
should migrate their scripts, etc. to avconv). Also, the suggestion to
go to 'Changelog' should point to the full path to Changelog, or better
yet, some migration guide (if one exists).

[Bug 374900] Re: Libfaac not LGPL

2010-04-29 Thread Andres Mejia
Reinhard,

I looked at the current ffmpeg tree and found that the aacenc can now be
enabled.
http://git.ffmpeg.org/?p=ffmpeg;a=blob;f=libavcodec/Makefile

Would it be possible to backport this to the the 0.5 branch (and thus
patch current Debian/Ubuntu packages accordingly) or do users have to
wait for ffmpeg-0.6?

I would be willing to help with backporting of this feature if desired.

It's wrong to install the libmythtv-perl files to the Perl site

 Tasks left to do:

  - package the source from android [1] properly.
  - get it packaged as ubuntu package.
  - get it into the archive.
  - backport the new amr wrapper to the 0.5 branch.

 any takers?

My favorite is the native FFmpeg implementation that was developed
during Google Summer of Code 2006. Unfortunately it was never finished.
With a bit of luck it will be finished during this year's SoC. Help is
 very much welcome.

 Diego

Yet another interesting implementation is retrocode.

This one is GPL3+.

No, this is not an implementation of AMR, it uses the nonfree libamr.

 Diego

Yeah, just realized that.

By the way, PacketVideo was able to obtain permission from 3GPP to use the code
in the specs under the Apache License. How hard would it be for someone to ask
3GPP for FFmpeg to use the code under (L)GPL?

[Bug 194919] Re: libopenal needs replacement

2008-05-05 Thread Andres Mejia
Just so you know, this is being worked on in Debian. I'm waiting for someone to
upload the openal-soft packages to the archive. You can try them out yourself.
- dget
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/o/openal-soft/openal-soft_1.3.253-1~experimental0.dsc

Since the openal SI upstream are considering the SI deprecated in favor of
OpenAL Soft, the openal-soft packages will probably end up in Debian unstable
soon afterwards.

[Bug 205790] Re: mediatomb is missing critical files in HARDY

2008-03-25 Thread Andres Mejia
Here's a snippet of the line that needs to be changed in
/etc/default/mediatomb.

# Set whether the daemon should be started. Set this value to anything
# but 'yes' to enable the daemon
NO_START=yes

This was something done way before I worked on the package and I always
wondered why it was needed. If starting mediatomb after the package is
installed is not desirable, that can be arranged using debhelper, thus
letting someone handle how to start mediatomb using the tools used to
control system services (i.e. kcontrol, etc).

Personally, I don't see the harm of allowing the mediatomb daemon to
start right after mediatomb-daemon is installed. However, I could also
compensate for this by using a generic shell script and dialog boxes.

[Bug 163139] Re: [sync request] Please sync miro from Debian unstable (main)

2007-11-16 Thread Andres Mejia
All changes have been made to the Debian package or have been included
upstream. One extra change will have to be done for the Ubuntu. Ubuntu
will need a build depends on python2.4-dev instead of just python-dev in
order for the package to build.

Actually, changing the pyversions file and the

be needed. I've attached a patch that would help in this.

[Bug 163139] [sync request] Please sync miro from Debian unstable (main)

2007-11-16 Thread Andres Mejia
Public bug reported:

Please sync miro (1.0-1) from Debian unstable main.
http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/m/miro/miro_1.0-1.dsc

This package is newer than the package uploaded to Ubuntu. Here's a copy
of the most recent changelog.

miro (1.0-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream release (Closes: #449131, #451207).
+ Fixed malformed miro.xml file (Closes: #445871, #443510).
+ Drop several patches which were applied upstream.
  * Add missing libxv-dev build-dependency (Closes: #442832, #443006, #443045).
  * Miro shipped with a menu file since the beginning (Closes: #443211).
It's currently in the 'Applications/Network/Web News' category.
  * Fix small typo in German translation (Closes: #451333).
  * Cannot reproduce the following bugs with this release. Please
reopen if you still experience problems:
+ Miro crashes on play (Closes: #443266).
+ Used to work; now segfaults on startup (Closes: #84).
Please try removing the ~/.miro directory if the problem persists.
+ Segfault on startup (quicktime related?) (Closes: #444051).
+ Cannot install Miro (Closes: #443045). Unlikely to be a real bug,
probably stems from mixing packages from stable/unstable.
  * New 'Recommends: libxine1-ffmpeg'.

[Bug 162310] Re: Please merge miro 1.0-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2007-11-16 Thread Andres Mejia
I mentioned in bug #163139 that miro would need a build depends on
firefox-dev. I later compiled and ran miro using the latest version of
xulrunner found in Debian and noticed that it ran faster with libxul
than from building against firefox-dev, and this was without installing
python-psyco. I've attached a patch of the only changes that I've made
for building miro-1.0-1.

Never before has collecting mushrooms been this mildly entertaining. At
least not in outer space. It's more of a lifestyle than a game, really.
Now with graphics and sound, too!

Seriously though, we like to think the game as a space-flying-mushroom-
picking-simulator. Well no, Those Funny Funguloids! is actually a nice
little piece of entertainment. You collect mushrooms, bring them back to
your home base and profit! That's the basic idea in a nutshell. It has
smooth, appealing 3d graphics and nice atmospheric sound effects. Go
ahead and try it out - it has sounds too!

I would like to see DebTorrent packaged for Ubuntu Gutsty (or +1). It
would allow us to *eventually* increase the scalability of Ubuntu,
possible uses include for downloading large games.

To expand on the BitTorrent protocol and application to work effectively
with large, constantly updating collections of files, and therefore enable the
efficient peer-to-peer downloading of Debian packages from an APT repository.
  Features

  * Downloads from peers, increasing the available bandwidth to the user
  * Reduces the bandwidth requirements needed to setup a repository of
packages
  * Seamlessly integrates with the current APT tool
  * Automatically falls back to downloading from an HTTP mirror when peers
are not available

This software is open-source and is released at no charge under the
  terms of the MIT license.

[Bug 43324] Re: There is no 64 bit package available.

2007-08-29 Thread Andres Mejia
It looks like building 32-bit wine on amd64 will be possible soon, if it's not
possible now. Take a look at http://buildd.debian.org/pkg.cgi?pkg=wine
Also, these links should be relevant.
http://bugs.debian.org/430845

A sync request should probably be placed for when wine-0.9.42 packages
get uploaded to the Debian archive. Just one more version according to

[Bug 106694] Re: Kubuntu feisty boot failure for PS3

2007-04-20 Thread Andres Mejia
I see where the problem lies. When the installer was going through the
partitioning step, the hard disk where root will be mounted was detected
at /dev/sdd, not /dev/sda, thus the kboot.conf file that is
installed has root as root=/dev/sdd1 instead of root=/dev/sda1.

A quick fix to this was typing at a command line:

sudo sed -e 's/sdd1/sda1' -i /etc/kboot.conf

[Bug 102068] Re: Upgrade to feisty broke Kaffeine DVD playback

2007-04-19 Thread Andres Mejia
After doing a fresh install of Kubuntu Feisty, I checked to see which
exact packages would be needed to make DVD playback work. There are
three packages that are not installed by default that need to be
installed before DVD playback will work (actually two in case you're
just playing unencrypted DVDs). They are libdvdread3, libxine1-ffmpeg,
and libdvdcss2. libdvdcss2 will have to be acquired elsewhere as it is
not in the Ubuntu repository. If you don't intend to play encrypted DVDs
ever, you don't have to install libdvdcss2. Additionally,
libxine1-ffmpeg requires libmad0 and will install libmad0 automatically.

[Bug 103173] Re: [totem-xine] DVD will not play

2007-04-19 Thread Andres Mejia
I did a fresh install of Kubuntu Feisty and found that there were only
three packages not installed by default that needed to be installed in
order to get DVDs to play. Since Kubuntu mainly uses xine based media
players, this should relate to this bug.

The three packages are libdvdread3, libxine1-ffmpeg, and libdvdcss2.
libdvdcss2 is not in the Ubuntu repository so it has to be acquired
elsewhere. If you don't intend to play encrypted DVDs, you don't need to
install libdvdcss2. Additionally, libxine1-ffmpeg requires libmad0 so it
will install libmad0 automatically.

libdvdread and libdvdcss will always be needed. I installed libdvdnav as

exact packages were installed but I suspect one of the packages was
