Re: [Bug 192176] Re: Scanner output always JPEG compressed

This is a problem of simple-scan not offering the advanced options of
the driver. The hpaio SANE driver has the needed functionality.

I do not agree. You say that simple-scan and every other frontend
should implement the ability to configure the backend. This is bad
design because:

1) There is no interoperability between frontends (user must configure
each frontend).
2) Every frontend author should take effort and write the code.
3) Code duplication.

Please tell if it's hard to implement global backend option and why.

Simple scan now disables compression on drivers that support it

Very nice, I'll upgrade to the new version as soon as it propagates to
the repository.

[Bug 192176] Re: Scanner output always JPEG compressed

2010-02-14 Thread Andrey Paramonov
Hello!

Recently new SANE frontends started to appear. A very nice one is Simple Scan:

launchpad.net/simple-scan

However, it's focused on interface simplicity and does not provide a way
to set Compression to None in the Advanced Options dialog. Nor it
supports command line option not to garble the image.

How should I proceed in this case?

Not commenting on the merits of this defect report, but I will point out
that this has been the default in HPLIP since our first release, and was
the default in HPOJ, the previous project for HP print/scan support (in
other words, this default has been in place for approximately 9 years,
it was not changed recently, AFAIK).

Hello!

As of now, I cannot really confirm or disprove your statement, because
I do not have older packages any more. Anyway, is it possible to
implement global config option to turn the undesired behavior off?

Thanks for your effort,
Andrey

[Bug 192176] Re: Scanner output always JPEG compressed

2008-06-03 Thread Andrey Paramonov
Hi Aaron!

You say that xsane is your primary frontend. But it doesn't seem to be
documented anywhere in xsane manual how to disable the image corruption.
A user should not have to play Sherlock Holmes in order to find a way to
turn the image corruption off. As of now, the whole feature effectively
resembles infamous proprietary Digital Restrictions Management systems.
Please, provide a straightforward way to disable image corruption and
document it!

[Bug 192176] Re: Scanner output always JPEG compressed

2008-06-02 Thread Andrey Paramonov
Hi!

I'm the original bug submitter and I'm really disappointed that you have
set status to invalid. I argue that the new default value for the
compression option is *not* a good balance between speed and quality.
For me, the new default behavior is a clear *regression* compared to the
previous versions.

What you say sounds kind of like 90% of users' content is so poor that
they will not even notice quality reduction anyway. Please note
however, that in some areas such an evident image *corruption* is not
acceptable, take for example OCR. I argue that OCR is a very common
application for scanners, so most users probably would *not* benefit
from image quality loss.

Having said all that, it *could* be a sensible default value if a user
could easily switch the lossy compression off. As of now, there seems to
be no system-wide setting, at least documented, that could switch the
image corruption once and for all. It's even not obvious how to turn the
image corruption off on program-by-program basis (please see man xsane
and xsane html documentation -- there is no mention of compression).
It took me considerable amount of time just to understand that this is
not a bug but a [mis]feature. I guess many users just started to use
higher resolution settings to compensate for quality reduction.

Please consider reopening the bug!
