[Bug 1752772] Re: r8169 ethernet card don't work after returning from suspension

2018-09-22 Thread Arthur Peters
sky2 is a separate driver. So an issue on sky2 should be reported as a
separate issue.

[Bug 1648881] [NEW] Package is out of date

2016-12-09 Thread Arthur Peters
Public bug reported:

The package in ubuntu is 1.60 which is more than a year old. The current
version is 1.70.

An updated package would be great. I will try to submit a patch in the
next month or so. But time to learn how is limited.

[Bug 863736] Re: Processes blocked indefinitely in kernel: queue_log_writer+0x8c/0xd0 [reiserfs]

2011-12-12 Thread Arthur Peters
This has occurred again and although it is not on the most recent kernel
it had a slightly different call stack so I thought I would post the log
just in case they help. This is on 3.0.0-13-generic.

The interesting bit is that every stack has a call to schedule near the
top. This hints to me that something has changed.

This crash happened while I was both reading and writing somewhat
heavily from different processes (a fast filling log file, an MP3
player, and a large image being loaded). That's as close as I know for
how to reproduce. It does not happen often so it's really hard to figure
out a pattern.

[Bug 870042] Re: Memory leak in compiz (and maybe Xorg)

2011-12-08 Thread Arthur Peters
Memory leaks are bugs. Maybe not always high priority but this should
stay open until it is fixed even if that takes a while and it isn't the
focus of anyone working on it. Also closing this WONT FIX will leave
anyone who has this problem in a way where it does matter (such as on a
low-memory system) feeling that the community doesn't care about making
good software and that is definitely not a good thing.

Also I hope you are joking about just killing compiz and then
rearranging all your windows. It will work of course but it's a bandaid
not a fix. It's doing manually something that should be automatic, which
is always bad.

[Bug 863736] Re: Processes blocked indefinitely in kernel: queue_log_writer+0x8c/0xd0 [reiserfs]

2011-10-23 Thread Arthur Peters
This bug has happened again. This is only the second time, and I'm
really not sure how to replicate it. However there does appear to be a
deadlock (or a crash with a lock held) happening.

This trace has a couple of threads that are a little past
queue_log_writer:

One has a frame like [a0384eec] ? open_xa_root+0x8c/0xf0 [reiserfs]
after queue_log_writer.
Another has a frame [81195486] ? mark_buffer_dirty+0x66/0xa0.

The first program that froze (that I noticed) was emacs (3308).

   Status: Incomplete = Confirmed

[Bug 865701] Re: Maximized windows can be accidentally closed from wrong monitor.

2011-10-03 Thread Arthur Peters
This even works if there is no maximized window on the other monitor. So
the panel-looking-thing that is not a gnome-panel (and I sometimes wish
it was) is at fault. No other window needs to be involved on the monitor
where the click is done.

[Bug 865838] [NEW] Nouveau oops: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at (null)

2011-10-03 Thread Arthur Peters
Public bug reported:

Compiz seems to have triggered this bug. This error appeared (the stack
trace is in the attached log).

compiz: page allocation failure: order:4, mode:0x40d0

Then less than a second later there is an OOPS in nouveau:

BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at (null)

...
(The attached log has the full oops)

The system did not offer to file a bug when I rebooted it.

The crash happened during a fairly normal Chromium and LibreOffice
homework session.

[Bug 865846] Re: chromium-browser crashed with SIGSEGV (flash/npviewer.bin related)q

2011-10-03 Thread Arthur Peters
A quite look at the stack trace makes me think this may actually be
nouveau problem. I am having LOTS of problems with nouveau.

It looks like it was trying to render something via the GLES2 API
(gpu::gles2::GLES2DecoderImpl::HandleDrawElements). And the calls to
nouveau that resulted from that froze it (nouveau_fence_update).

[Bug 861799] Re: banshee using 100% cpu

2011-09-30 Thread Arthur Peters
I am also experiencing this problem. The UI freezes and banshee uses
100% CPU (in one or more threads since CPU usage goes as high as 150% on
my Core 2 Duo). Here is a stack trace and all the errors in the log that
came before the crash.

[Bug 863111] [NEW] Banshee crashes with IndexOutOfRangeException at Banshee.Collection.Database.DatabaseTrackListModel.Reload

2011-09-30 Thread Arthur Peters
Public bug reported:

Banshee was playing fine and then it finished one song and the GUI
window suddenly disappeared. The program had crashed (stack trace
attached). I would guess that it crashes while trying to find the next
song to play. I believe it was in Shuffle By Song mode.

There is a possibility that my database is corrupted I have had a couple
of other crashes. However this seems like a bad way to handle that.

If there is a way I could diagnose the DB I would be happy to do so. I
just don't know how.

[Bug 863133] [NEW] Firefox huge memory usage on amb64 (memory leak)

2011-09-30 Thread Arthur Peters
Public bug reported:

Behaviour I have seen:
* Start firefox
* Memory usage: ~250MB
* Use normally for 30 minutes to an hour (3-6 tabs a new page loaded every
couple of minutes)
* Memory usage: ~990MB (I have seen it get as high as 1.4GB)

The memory usage does go down when I close tab and the like but overall
it only increase and the bulk of it is never freed.

I did not have this problem on Firefox 3 on 32bit (it leaked but much
slower).

[Bug 863736] [NEW] Processes blocked indefinitely in kernel: queue_log_writer+0x8c/0xd0 [reiserfs]

2011-09-30 Thread Arthur Peters
Public bug reported:

Reiserfs seems to have triggered freezes in several applications. They
are hard kernel level freezes (the process is blocked in the kernel).
This happened while I was away from the machine. Chromium, GNOME
Terminal and other basic Unity/Gnome apps were sitting idle. The problem
went away once I rebooted the machine. Reiserfs is used only for my
/home.

Attached is a kernel log that shows stack traces from the blocked
processes. But here is the interesting bit, ubuntuone-syncd and
chromium-browser had identical stack traces in the kernel freeze:

[Bug 861718] [NEW] Unity crashed and restarted and now one screen will not show applications

2011-09-28 Thread Arthur Peters
Public bug reported:

Unity seemed to crash and then restarted. Now my left monitor shows an
in correctly rendered desktop background (screen shot attached to next
message) and none of the files that are in my desktop directory. Also
when I try to open a window that is on that monitor it does not appear
and the system freezes for several seconds. However it's menu will
appear for a time in the panel at the top of the screen. Also windows
dragged from the other monitor to this one disappear as if there where
some window on top of them on that monitor. Interestingly the unity
sidebar thing (where all the open programs are listed) opens and closes
correctly on that same monitor.

I am using the nvidia propietary drivers.

[Bug 861718] Re: Unity crashed and restarted and now one screen will not show applications

2011-09-28 Thread Arthur Peters
** Description changed:

Unity seemed to crash and then restarted. Now my left monitor shows an
in correctly rendered desktop background (screen shot attached to next
message) and none of the files that are in my desktop directory. Also
when I try to open a window that is on that monitor it does not appear
and the system freezes for several seconds. However it's menu will
- appear for a time in the panel at the top of the screen. Interestingly
- the unity sidebar thing (where all the open programs are listed) opens
- and closes correctly on that same monitor.
+ appear for a time in the panel at the top of the screen. Also windows
+ dragged from the other monitor to this one disappear as if there where
+ some window on top of them on that monitor. Interestingly the unity
+ sidebar thing (where all the open programs are listed) opens and closes
+ correctly on that same monitor.

I am using the nvidia propietary drivers.

[Bug 9459] Re: Lack of disk space for installation after downloading packages

2010-09-20 Thread Arthur Peters
Would it be possible to simply add a warning for small root partitions?
Just set a fixed soft minimum like 5GB, and if the size is less than
that warn the user that they may run into problems. That way people who
know what they are doing can still attempt installs on really small
disks, but the great unwashed will not run into this problem.

[Bug 539086] Re: Gigabyte GA-M61PME-S2 does not boot on Lucid

2010-05-12 Thread Arthur Peters
This bug also affects me on the MSI P965 motherboard. The same
workaround worked for me too. Sounds like maybe some piece of code is
repeatedly querying the FDD if it claims to exist and if there is
actually no FDD then the time outs kill the performance.

[Bug 344211] [NEW] Print to file does not provide a default filename

2009-03-17 Thread Arthur Peters
Public bug reported:

The Print to file option in the gnome print dialog no longer uses the
print job name as the filename. It is much more configurable now, but it
should use the print job name as the default filename. Currently the
default filename is .pdf (or .ps for PostScript). These default
filenames are very bad because they are hidden by default in the file
manager.

It would be really if the default were to use the print job name (plus
the correct extension of course), but failing that then it should be
something like Print To File[.ext].

A screen shot showing this is attached.

[Bug 339438] Re: workrave's clock no longer count down

2009-03-15 Thread Arthur Peters
I am also experiencing this problem. Could the change in the Xserver
version have broken workraves activity detection?

This does not appear to be a rendering problem. The break dialog never
appears.

I am using an up to date Jauntly alpha on i386 (32bit).

Sorry to respond to my self, but this can be confirmed by forcing a
rest-break (by clicking the tea-cup icon in the GUI) and moving the
mouse around. The rest time will continue to elapse even though the
mouse is moving so workrave should consider you active.

[Bug 329931] Re: Cannot drag panels to different edges of screen

2009-03-11 Thread Arthur Peters
This might be a documentation bug since older versions allowed drag
without alt. I spent a good while trying to figure this out.

Maybe a mention of this should be put somewhere in the release notes or
other documentation.

That being said I think the change is reasonable. You don't need to drag
panels often so having to hold alt is not a problem and it might prevent
accidental moves.

[Bug 316205] Re: Regression: USB/Wireless keyboards not working on Jaunty alternate daily CD - from Alpha 2

2009-02-10 Thread Arthur Peters
Confirmed in daily 20090209.

I investigated some and these are the data points I have found:

* The keyboard does show up in lsusb in the installer environment.
* The usbhid kernel module is loaded.
* There is no device for the USB keyboard in /dev/input/ (however the USB mouse
does have devices in that directory).
* dmesg seems to show that the keyboard is enumerated as a USB device but never
attached to the HID driver like it should be.

This seems like a rather severe bug (at least for those of us that are
effected). Should the severity be increased? Should it be attached to a
milestone so that it can be certain to get fixed?

I'm going to try to debug it (though my knowledge of the installer
environment is very limited). I'll post any results here.

[Bug 251107] Re: [Intrepid] nvidia_drv.so: undefined symbol: AllocateScreenPrivateIndex

2008-10-19 Thread Arthur Peters
So I see we are waiting on NVidia (and that could take a very long
time), so I get the sense that Intrepid will be released with out
working drivers for any of the older NVidia cards.

However I was wondering if it is planned to release an update which
fixes this problem after the release. Is that planned?

Also this seems like a pretty severe issue and could hurt the image of
Ubuntu with people who try it. Is canonical leaning on NVidia to try to
get drivers out of them?

Sorry if this is not bug report material.

[Bug 285592] Re: KONVERSATION keeps disconnecting me from the irc.ubuntu.com even though i have a fine internet connection!!

2008-10-18 Thread Arthur Peters
I cannot duplicate this problem using konversation on Ubuntu 8.04. It is
possible that there is something wrong with you internet connection that
does not effect HTTP, but does effect IRC.

What do you mean by lag delay?

Also to quote one of the canned responces. Could you provide:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Honestly this seems much more likely to be a networking related
misconfiguration or bug than one in Konversation. But more info will be
needed to know for sure.

[Bug 21551] Re: Breezy Installer does not warn about partitions too small

2008-09-21 Thread Arthur Peters
I did a test install (in virtualbox but that shouldn't effect this
issue) with the alternate intrepid Alpha-6 image and it still does not
provide a warning when installing in a small partition. I attempted to
install in a 100MB root with 8MB of swap. It gave no warning and then
failed while unpacking the bootstrap image. A screenshot is attached.

So this is still a bug in Intrepid on the alternate disk side.

[Bug 179111] Package scripts download the wrong version of binary package

2007-12-28 Thread Arthur Peters
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

The install scripts for this package have an out-dated check sum for the
adobe flash binary package. The package is being downloaded from
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz,
but this is the most recent version of flash which is now 9,0,115,0
instead of the 9.0.48.0 that the Ubuntu package seems to expect.

It seems to me that the package should be updated with the new checksum
and changed to download the specific adobe package version instead of
the most current one to avoid the problem in the future.

The install fails with the following message:

CUT

[3036127/3036127]

Download done.
md5sum mismatch install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz
The Flash plugin is NOT installed.
/CUT

I will attach a copy of the full output of aptitude.

Install the package bcm43xx-fwcutter from universe. It will

Once you have universe enabled (this is default on Gutsy I think) run:

[Bug 96430] Re: MASTER: Request for new-legacy nvidia drivers (9631)

2007-04-10 Thread Arthur Peters
I had similar problems to the ones that other people are having. For me
they were related to having installed the NVidia driver using the NVidia
installer. I solved them by uninstalling using the Nvidia installer and
then reinstalling the ubuntu packages (nvidia-glx, linux-restricted-
modules-2.6.20-14-generic) and then unloading the nvidia driver (the
wrong one had been loaded somehow. And a reboot would have worked too).
So overall it looks like the below on console. It must be done from
outside X or the module unload will fail.

$ sudo invoke-rc.d gdm stop
$ sudo bash NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9631-pkg1.run --uninstall
$ sudo aptitude reinstall linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-14-generic nvidia-glx
$ sudo rmmod nvidia
$ sudo invoke-rc.d gdm start

I hope this helps someone.

[Bug 96430] Re: MASTER: Request for new-legacy nvidia drivers (9631)

2007-03-28 Thread Arthur Peters
Sorry to add more traffic on this bug, but I think I have something to
add that no one has said.

Perhaps a Multiverse package could contain the 96xx drivers until it has
been established whether they will be supported by NVidia?

That way Ubuntu does not have to worry about supporting the drivers and
they would be available without much hassle to those of us who need it
(enabling multiverse is easy). If there could be a plug in restricted-
manager that would allow it to enable the 96xx driver once they were
installed from Multiverse that would be nice. But regardless, aptitude
install ...; nvidia-glx-config enable is a lot easier than the NVidia
installer.

Also, once it becomes clear whether NVidia will be supporting the
drivers it will be easy to either move them Restricted or not depending.

Just a thought for a compromise.

[Bug 89712] Re: Invisible windows when desktop effects is enabled

2007-03-17 Thread Arthur Peters
I can confirm that is problem exists on current Feisty (as of 2007 03
17). I am using a Compaq Presario R3000z with a NVidia Geforce 440 Go
using the nvidia proprietary driver.

However I cannot predictable reproduce it using the method in the
original report. It seems to be related to the window being maximized,
especially if the program starts maximized (like firefox often does,
because of common usage). It has happened to me on multiple different
programs (gedit, firefox, gconf-editor, rhythmbox), so it is not
specific to firefox. It seems like it might be a non-deterministic
button like a timing bug (threading).

Can anyone give any guidance on how to produce useful debug output from
compiz to try to diagnose this bug?

For the record, when I used compiz (and beryl) 3-4 months ago I never
say this problem, so I don't think this is a fundamental problem in the
software or a hardware incompatibility.

This is not a compiz bug. It seems that this should be fixed by adding

/usr/sbin/nvidia-glx-config.

[Bug 88589] gtk-window-decorator does not display borders

2007-02-27 Thread Arthur Peters
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I am using feisty i386 (installed Herd 4, updated to 20070227). On a
Compaq R3000z AMD64 laptop with a GeForce4 400 Go.

I enabled compiz using the button in desktop-effects. Compiz proper
works fine (wobbly windows, neat alt-TAB, etc), but there are no window
decorations. gtk-window-decorator is running (visible in ps output), but
it doesn't appear to do anything.

The output of desktop-effects contain a lot of messages like:

[Bug 85102] Re: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/totem/libtotem-narrowspace-plugin.so: undefined symbol: NS_CStringContainerInit

2007-02-17 Thread Arthur Peters
I have changed the package to totem-gstreamer, because I am experiencing
the same problem in firefox and the same .so causes the problem in both
cases (/usr/lib/totem/libtotem-narrowspace-plugin.so). That .so is in
the totem-gstreamer package. However the function
(NS_CStringContainerInit) is part of the Mozilla libraries, so this may
be a firefox/mozilla problem.

The output from firefox is:

/usr/lib/firefox/firefox-bin: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/totem
/libtotem-narrowspace-plugin.so: undefined symbol:
NS_CStringContainerInit

A couple of objdump runs show that the function needed is provided by
/usr/lib/firefox/libxpcom.so. Perhaps there are link problems in how the
totem firefox plugins are being built.

There is a work around. Run firefox with:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/firefox/libxpcom.so:/usr/lib/firefox/libxpcom_core.so
firefox

This forces the right libs to be linked in.

I am using Feisty of 2007 02 17.

[Bug 77660] Desktop install CD mounts harddisk partitions when they are created or changed

2007-01-03 Thread Arthur Peters
Public bug reported:

I was partitioning my harddisk using the feisty daily desktop 20070101
disk and every time the partition table changed the system would mount
all the partitions it could find to mount. This is very irritating
because nautilus pops up windows, but it is also dangerous because a
partition could end up being mounted during a critical operation like
resize.

I'm not sure what the correct package is because I don't know what
package is used for live CD bugs.

To reproduce this just boot the live CD then start any partitioning tool
(even the one in ubiquity) and create a partition. The system will mount
all your mountable partitions under /media.

2007-01-03 Thread Arthur Peters
I am also experiencing this. On daily AMD64 20070101 on a Compaq R3000z.

It occurred for me when I left free space when partitioning by hand
assuming that I could use the space in the installer partitioner. When I
created partitions to fill the free space, the problem went away.

So it appears that there is a bug in the handling of free space.

[Bug 68035] No Root Filesystem when I reuse existing partitions

2006-10-24 Thread Arthur Peters
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I am reinstalling Edgy using the newest desktop disk. I wanted to
directly reuse the partition I had created last time so I selected
manual editing of the partition table and then didn't change anything.
Then at the Prepare mount points screen I selected the correct partition
/ and /boot then clicked next. A message is displayed at the bottom
of the screen No Root Partition. Something is obviously wrong because
one of the Mount Point combo boxes does say /. Also by default the
boot partition (60MB) is selected to be the root partition and if I just
click next without changing anything it tell me that the root filesystem
is too small.

A Ubiquity log produced using UBIQUITY_DEBUG=1 is below. It is a log of
going through and attempting to reuse the partitions as I originally
wanted to.

[Bug 68048] GNOME Settings Daemon does not start properly on AMD64 desktop install disk

2006-10-24 Thread Arthur Peters
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

When I boot the disk I get the following error message:

There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work
correctly.

The last error message was:

Activation of org.gnome.SettingsDaemon timed out

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.

And the GTK theme is not setup correctly. However everything else seems
to work and if I run gnome-settings-daemon in a terminal it starts
fine and the theme switches to the correct one.

This problem is not present on PowerPC (most recent daily iso).

[Bug 67465] Bonobo broken on PowerPC Edgy RC

2006-10-21 Thread Arthur Peters
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bonobo

I am installing Edgy RC on a iBook G4 12.

And once the live gnome environment appears it displays a bunch of errors
appear. From gnome-panel I get about 10 messages like:

The panel encountered a problem while loading OAFIID:GNOME_ShowDesktopApplet.

From nautilus I get one message:

Nautilus can't be used now, due to an unexpected error.

Nautilus can't be used now, due to an unexpected error from Bonobo when
attempting to locate the factory. Killing bonobo-activation-server and
restarting Naulitus may help fix the problem.

Also, running bonobo-activation-run-query prints A system exception
('IDL:/omg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0') occured. Running the same
command on a AMD64 live disk prints number of results: 0.

I'm not sure where to look for better debug information. Please tell me
and I can do more debugging.

[Bug 20889] Re: Suspend to RAM (sleep) goes to sleep but fails to wake.

2006-09-21 Thread Arthur Peters
There has been some changes on this problem. It can now sleep!!

Just click System - Quit... - Suspend on the live CD. However, this
does not work in installed system. This seems to be caused by the fact
that the nvidia kernel module is loaded in the installed version, but
not in the live CD environment. Unloading it in single user or full X
mode allowed suspend to work (just by clicking System - Quit... -
Suspend).

Since by default the nvidia module is loaded but not used. I'm not sure
where it is being loaded (I blacklisted it in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
and it didn't prevent it from being loaded), but maybe it should not be
loaded so as to allow suspend to work. nvidia-glx is not enabled be
default anyway.

I tried to get the nvidia driver to sleep by using the NvAGP option, but
it did not work.

[Bug 48077] Re: Running nvidia-glx-config enable breaks X.

I am experiencing what is probably the same problem. nvidia-glx-config

This shows the same bus ID change that others have mentioned, but also shows a
change to the monitor config (a bit scary this should physically damage old
monitors) and to the modes (a big problem on a wide screen laptop).

I am using Edgy (updated today) i386 on a Compaq R3000z.

[Bug 55908] deskbar-applet window pops up behind the active window

2006-08-10 Thread Arthur Peters
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: deskbar-applet

The search window of deskbar-applet pops up behind the active window,
but in front of other windows, when it is accessed using the hotkey
(default Alt-F3).

It should appear above all window with the search box selected, so that
the user can simply press Alt-F3 and then start typing their search
without using the mouse.

** Affects: deskbar-applet (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Untriaged
 Status: Unconfirmed

[Bug 29686] Re: Multimedia keys on Compaq R3000z nolonger work

2006-08-10 Thread Arthur Peters
I had added the needed info and no one had ever responded. I thought
maybe if I changed the status someone would look at it. Then again,
there are probably better things to work on.

[Bug 55731] Re: Parted fails to correctly read partition table

2006-08-09 Thread Arthur Peters
I booted using the Edgy Knot 1 CD and had the same problem.

However I looked at the partition list and saw what was wrong: There is
a zero length partition (partition 7) that overlaps with another
partition (number 6). I deleted partition 7 and it solved the problem.

It looks like parted needs better error recovery, so that it can be used
to solve this kind of problem. I had to use fdisk.

[Bug 55731] Parted fails to correctly read partition table

2006-08-08 Thread Arthur Peters
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: parted

Parted gives an error trying to read a partition table the fdisk can
read without problems. Below is the output of fdisk and parted. I will
also attach the partition table in raw form (dd if=/dev/hda
of=partitiontable.dat bs=512 count=1).

This bug also makes the dapper install show the disk as having no
partitions at all (I have not tried it with Edgy yet). I believe this is
related to bugs #54164 and #53881.
