[Bug 1169763] Re: When restart button pressed, the restart offers shutdown and restart

2013-11-10 Thread Arthur Tan
Is it possible to make the Restart/Shutdown dialog window highlighted
with either restart or shut down depending on the previous action?

For example, if you clicked restart from an Update Manager dialog, then
the Restart button on the left will be highlighted and you just hit
Enter to complete the action. Similarly, if you clicked on a Shut Down
option from the system menu, then the Shut Down button on the right
would automatically be highlighted.

[Bug 961963] Re: Device icons not appearing in launcher (USB stick, Audio CD)

2013-09-30 Thread Arthur Tan
I'm using 12.04 Unity 5.20.

When I insert an audio CD, I get the dialog window asking me what I want
to do. If I close or cancel that dialog window, then the CD icon
disappears from the launcher.

This only happens with audio CD's. If I insert a data CD then the icon
stays in the launcher because when I insert a data CD, nautilus opens
and even if I close nautilus, the CD icon stays in the launcher.

[Bug 1169054] [NEW] Disabling then Re-Enabling login without password does remove user from nopasswdlogin group

2013-04-15 Thread Arthur Tan
Public bug reported:

I am using 12.04.

Under System Settings, User Accounts, Passwords, Action, changing to
Login without a password works as expected. On the next login, LightDM
will not prompt you for a password, You can just login by hitting Enter.

But, re-enabling password, or changing a password for the same user does
not change LightDM behavior. LightDM does not re-enable asking for
password at login.

I think the problem is re-enabling password under Systems Settings does
not delete user from nopasswdlogin group. You have to delete it from the
command line:

sudo gpasswd -d username nopasswdlogin

This problem is the same ones described here:

Currently, the window text is, nautilus requires to install software to

[Bug 1067876] Re: [quantal] Missing Safely Remove Drive and Eject options from Quicklists. Only have Unmount.

2013-02-03 Thread Arthur Tan
How does the system distinguish between USB sticks and external hard
drives (other than size)?

I've noticed that Nautilus actions do not trigger OSD notifications.
Removing external media by right-clicking within nautilus will not
generate OSD notifications.

The OSD notification behavior is not consistent. In 12.04 right-clicking
and Ejecting in the LAUNCHER triggers an OSD notification, but right-
clicking and selecting Safely-Remove in the launcher does not.

I think that any action on external media - from the Launcher or from
Nautilus - should generate OSD notifications whether its Eject, or
Safely Remove, or Unmount, etc.

[Bug 1009686] Re: Change window title from Software Updater to...anything else?

2012-12-27 Thread Arthur Tan
Hi Adolfo,

After thinking about what Matthew (MPT) has written, I acknowledge that
there are valid differences of opinion about what update manager or
software updater should be called. I agree with MPT that no matter what
it's called, the name should be clear, simple, and direct. For now, I've
changed the bug's status back to Opinion.

I also think that if software updater was merged into Ubuntu Software
Center, it would simply things even further. Consider Google's Play
Store. One program - the Play Store - shows the user what software is
available, what is installed, and what can be updated. Perhaps USC can
do something similar by the next LTS.

Happy new year.

Re: [Bug 1009686] Re: Change window title from Software Updater to...anything else?

2012-12-23 Thread Arthur Tan
On Thu, Dec 20, 2012 at 8:24 AM, Matthew Paul Thomas m...@canonical.com wrote:
Calling a window a Manager is almost always a symptom of being
indirect. Back in the dark days of Mozilla, pre-Firefox, it had so many
Managers -- Bookmarks Manager, Certificate Manager, Cookie
Manager, Form Manager, Password Manager, Profile Manager, and so
on -- that one of the developers once parodied it by implementing a
Manager Manager to launch them all. Their modern-day Firefox
equivalents are mostly more straightforward: for example Bookmarks,
 Cookies, and Saved Passwords.

Simplification is good. And to your credit, updater is not without
precedent, e.g.

https://ninite.com/updater/
http://www.winzip.com/driver-updater.htm

But if we follow Mozilla's lead, why don't we just call it Updates ?

Branching out a little bit...perhaps one day, (I hope), Software
Updater will be merged in Software Center and we won't even need to
think about these things.

Happy holidays!

Re: [Bug 1054495] Re: AirPrint doesn't work on iOS 6 device

2012-12-12 Thread Arthur Tan
Hello,

Sorry for the confusion but what is the CUPS version number that
should land in Precise Proposed that incorporates the Airprint fix and
the latest security update?

I currently have cups 1.5.3-0ubuntu5.1 and iOS Airprint does NOT work.

Thanks!

I dont know if any attachement is required for this issue.
   Sorry...

   [IMPACT]

Everyone with iOS 6 on his iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch, independent whether
iOS 6 was installed from the beginning or by an update, is not able to
print from his iOS device any more, as there are changes in the
AirPrint implementation. Due to Apple's updates this affects Apple
hardware of the last three years.

   [TESTCASE]

Print from an Appler iOS device with iOS 6 or newer. The print queues
of your shared printers on your Precise machine do not appear. After
applying the fixed package the queues will appear and printing will
   work.

   [Regression Potential]

The changes are very simple (see attached debdiff) and so there are no
   regressions expected.

[Bug 1036874] Re: Eject USB drive triggers OSD notification but Safely Remove does not.

2012-12-03 Thread Arthur Tan
I just noticed another related behavior. When Ejecting a USB drive, if
you get a window asking if you want to empty Trash first, then no OSD
notification will be displayed after Trash is emptied. Ideally, you
should get a notification after Trash has been emptied and the USB drive
has been ejected.

[Bug 1065802] Re: Progress bar on launcher icons should be at the bottom, not the middle

2012-10-13 Thread Arthur Tan
Currently, having the progress bar in the middle does cover up (small)
launcher icons while the progress bar is active e.g. file transfers,
downloads, etc.

However, one argument for keeping the progress bar in the middle, is it
lines up nicely with the triangular pip that indicates which programs
are active in the launcher.

I can submit a screenshot if this is unclear.

Hi Matthew,

You are correct. I misspoke. The debate (or spirited discussion if

https://plus.google.com/u/0/109365858706205035322/posts/J485xYxhY7v

That being said, the name could still be improved. You asked why.

(1) Update Manager was fine. But Software Updater doesn't sound
natural (to me). Maybe the name was changed to match the Software Up
to Date menu entry under the System Menu (the cog wheel). If so, why
don't we just call it Update Software (my preference) or Software
Update (my second choice) instead of Software Updater? The word
Updater is too active of a name for what is designed to be an
unobtrusive background process. Updater sounds like a program you
run rather than the pop-up it is now. Even if I'm not convincing you,
I hope I'm making some sense. :)

(2) It's just style. We should simplify the pop-up messages to make
them even less obtrusive, quick to read, and easy to deal with. I've
always loved Einstein's quote about making everything as simple as
possible, but not simpler. If we have one sentence that says, Updated
software is available. then the question about installing now is
implied by the buttons, especially when one of the buttons is labelled
Install Now. It's redundant to ask if they want to install now and
then have the button.

Admittedly, these items are minor points. And what I think is clear
and simple language can be very different from what someone else
thinks. Like everyone else on this list, I'm just trying to make
Ubuntu better.

Take care,
Arthur

[Bug 1009686] [NEW] Change window title from Software Updater to...anything else?

2012-06-06 Thread Arthur Tan
Public bug reported:

In 12.10, Update Manager is now being called Software Updater.

http://iloveubuntu.net/update-manager-renamed-software-updater-
ubuntu-1210

There's also some debate whether Do you want to install it now? should
be Do you want to install them now?

IMHO, we should just remove the second sentence altogether. The dialog
should just be, Updated software is available.

(1) Can we change the name of the window title from Software Updater to
Software Updates ... [or something else]
(2) Can we drop the second sentence in the dialog box.
