[Bug 568103] Re: Xorg freeze lucid daily build ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670

2010-04-23 Thread Bassu Khan
This is fixed by upgrading kernel to 2.6.33-020633rc8-generic. Just finished
testing with compiz and some extensive 3D work for the last 20 hours since when
this machine has been running on. Once again, just to note, this was for XPS
1645 with ATI Radeon HD 4670. BTW, an earlier version of 1645 laptop with
Radeon 3670 has no issue with X, compiz or 3D at all with Lucid's default
kernel 2.6.32 something.
Hopefully, it'll help people out there!

Cheers.

[Bug 217868] Re: rdesktop freezes shortly after successful connection

2009-07-01 Thread Bassu Khan
joebodo, I've been seeing this problem for almost two years the time since when
I switched to Debian/Ubuntu.
This occurs when you'll keep your rdesktop windows minimized for about 20-30
mins. This is something I feel that Gnome/Rdesktop does and not the client
machines you're connecting to. I've tried a lot to find a reason for this
rdesktop behaviour but couldn't even though at one I suspected Compiz causing
that!

And a more interesting thing is that, this sometimes happens with other Linux
distros as well.
Again, if you'll keep your window maximized or just active under the current
top window of any application, you'll likely not encounter the issue.

2009-04-25 Thread Bassu Khan
Woaah...!
I was getting freaked by the naughty auto_eth0 NetworkManager bug in Interpid
from last five months (though I already had that fixed by setting up my own
startup scripts) and when Jaunty was released yesterday, I tried with a fresh
install and guess what, the first thing I encountered, was this freeze !
I found that Inetl **Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics
Controller (rev 03)** was blacklisted in /usr/bin/compiz - I whitelisted it and
started getting problems.

It was working perfect in Interpid so i thought I would be the same
after the upgrade.. but upgrade brings more side effects than the
resolutions.. lol... as Andres mentioned in comment# 167

I am now trying this https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/UxaTesting and this

I'll post back if something helps!

[Bug 259214] Re: wired connection settings are lost after reboot

2009-03-20 Thread Bassu Khan
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 284298 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/284298

use resolvconf to setup defaults ... or use the connection editor to
set your custom DNS/gw ... its a bit tricky, b ut it works.
 - Alexander

I already achieved the goal without using resolvconf or by editing the custom
dns/gw because I don't want to remove NetworkManager

Here is how i did it. I simply put my username into `no pass required
for global group` section of sudoers and added that group to
/etc/sudoers:

# Members of the admin group may gain root privileges
%abbas ALL= NOPASSWD: /bin/chmod, /sbin/reboot, /sbin/halt, /sbin/poweroff
sudo ALL=NOPASSWD: ALL

(nevermind those reboot, halt and poweroff - it actually saves me some
seconds while doing WOL stuff ;))

This then gave me power of modifying the /etc/resolve.config whose permissions
are always set to root whenvever buggy NetworkManager pop up or works out (lol
for not in a way it should)
So, my machine changes the dns servers to what I define at the startup so
easily ;)

Then, the default gateway, which I simply deleted and added by by using route
(of course /sbin/route has been suid'ed for everyone) instructing through:
route del default gw x.x.x.x.x (removes the one which is seutp by by buggy
NetworkManager at startup)
route add default gw x.x.x.x.x (adds what i want)

And boom, my machine goes live on the internet at the startup after getting
instructions to wakeonlan :D

No wonder how many times I delete Auto eth0 or disable its automatic

Unfortunately, this didn't work out like Mustafa said.
I do have a manual solution for that, but you know what, the crappy

[Bug 217868] Re: rdesktop freezes shortly after successful connection

2009-03-05 Thread Bassu Khan
Hi Fran Taylor,

Thanks for the info but I can see this is not the case here! I already
have audited all of the networks for any such packet issues. The problem
dramatically appears when I rdc into ALL of the Windows machines in all
networks. I RDC into four different data centers from my three different
internal networks and the rdesktop 'timeouts' only occur when using
'rdesktop' from Linux. How come this is happening only in 'rdesktop' in
all 6 totally different networks on all machines so this is definitely
not the case ;)

One of the major issue which cracks me up, is the timeout as slowness is
acceptable as far as I'm able to work on remote machines! Rdesktop locks
up, freezes, crashes or simply timeouts when left inactive or minimized
for some time and I duplicated this a lot more on Hardy and Interpid.

[Bug 81854] Re: rdesktop locks keyboard

2009-03-01 Thread Bassu Khan
Ken
Could you please describe what you did and what it changed with
specifics. Thanks Ken

Sorry for being harsh but later I found that rdesktop has a lot of issues in
most recent Linux distributions. Here's how!
I usually interact with RDCs a lot on daily basis. I've been facing the issues
with rdesktop from a lot of time. Rdesktop freezes, hangs, becomes
unresponsive, acts slow or either stops after 10-15 mins of inactivity and/or
with keyboard or session locks up. This has been duplicated in Ubuntu (all
lastests) and Fedora 10.
Tried running latest version 1.60, manually compiled earlier versions, disabled
GUI stuff, tried changing networks, happens while rdc'ing local Windows
machines; in fact tried whatever i could do but no luck. Happens on all of my
machines in all networks.

Thanks.

[Bug 217868] Re: rdesktop freezes shortly after successful connection

2009-02-13 Thread Bassu Khan
Exactly! The same issue I noticed too. I spent hours investigating that. This
is an issue with the Ubuntu and few other Linux distributions' core. Not an
average normal user would find that but if you're an advanced user and you use
rdesktop regularly you'll see a lot of ill behaviours of rdesktop in all Linux
distros.
For me Linux is just a server OS far away from the needs of today's power
desktop users and Ubuntu needs to learn more discipline in better desktop
computing cause of the proclaims it made. Its not just the rdesktop but other
tools as well which wastes hundreds of hours of thousands of users each day
battling around their ways and finding the fixes for such 'lost' bugs like this
one! :P
This is why I switched back to Windows. I do use Ubuntu but only as a server
operating system and appreciate its stability for a few servers rolling tools
its currently running in, just because have don't much time to do more to fix
such sort of issues unfortunately which I was facing every minute when I had it.

Two more things I noticed:

- rdesktop timesout if kept idle for 15-20 minutes
- sometimes when rdesktop freezes the a few of the windows are not close-able
- sometimes a few windows show blank screen as well

This behavior is quite odd. I downloaded a couple of more old and newer
versions, compiled but still couldn't get a stable RDP connection. This
seems to be problem with Ubuntu core..!

Ubuntu needs to learn more discipline about Linux rdesktop!

[Bug 217868] Re: rdesktop freezes shortly after successful connection

2009-02-03 Thread Bassu Khan
I can confirm that this is the issue with rdesktop (all versions usually) in
Ubuntu.
My details:

Rdesktop version 1.5.0.
1.5.0-3+cvs200

The session freezes, though its not disconnected from host's side but I have to
simply close or kill the rdesktop session from here as soon as it freezes.
And when i try to connect again it creates a new session; just because the
other session which I had to kill, is usually seen as active on the host
machine. There is no way to configure auto-reconnect or to connect to the same
last session besides creating a new one. So, this is really a horrible
experience at the time. Please fix it if you are working on it. Thanks.
