[Bug 165113] Re: gksudo nautilus won't set ownership/permissions on files below

2009-06-23 Thread BeigeGenius
@David Siegel Well how about when a user wants/ needs to change the permissions
not only of the containing folder but also all files and folders contained
within said folder?
The current and only possible way of doing this on a distro using gnome is to
use chmod in the terminal!

Apply permissions to enclosed files has for as long as I know never
been functional in gnome and looks like it won't be for a long time!

[Bug 165113] Re: gksudo nautilus won't set ownership/permissions on files below

2009-06-22 Thread BeigeGenius
This bug does not just effect users running nautilus under root prilages
but also normally whilst logged in to their prospective user accounts.

Why has this bug not been fixed?
Surely this bug should have been fixed already, especially as a button
advertises this feature but does not function.

Therefore any unknowing user may not understand why when pressing the
Apply permissions to enclosed files button the permissions of enclosed
files have not been changed!

It is an annoyance that this button is still non functional even in the
new release of ubuntu 9.04 especially as other DM's and OS's have
similar features functional!

I propose disabling the button in an update to prevent any confusion in
the future.

I recommend switching to a desktop manager which is capable of changing
permissions properly such as KDE.
I fully agree that it is ridiculous that this simple bug has been left unfixed

[Bug 226906] Re: Hard lock when module e1000 in use

2009-02-10 Thread BeigeGenius
Bugs #304428 and #306737 marked as duplicates as appear to be a re-
appearance of this bug in ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex). A self made patch
which reloads the e1000e module when the power source is changed has
temporarily fixed this bug for me. However the side effect of this patch
is that it disconnects the computer from the network briefly which will
disrupt any downloads.

2009-02-10 Thread BeigeGenius
The following command: sudo ethtool -s eth0 wol d
Successfully turns off WOL (at least makes the driver think that) therefore the
NIC gets deactivated when the computer is shutdown.
Is there a way to make this permanent?
Considering that I have implemented a patch to reload the e1000e module when
the power source is changed to prevent the machine from locking up due to a bug
in the e1000e module. (This fix was created after this bug was found and
therefore is not the cause)

[Bug 323256] [NEW] 2.6.27-11 Intel Ethernet e100e Remains active after shutdown

2009-01-30 Thread BeigeGenius
Public bug reported:

After Updating to the latest kernel (2.6.27-11) The Ethernet device
(Intel 82573L Gigabit Ethernet Controller) remains active (link lights
remaining lit) after shutting down from kernel 2.6.27-11.

This did/does not occur when shutting down from 2.6.27-9 or Windows XP.

Laptop Model: Toshiba Satellite Pro A120-146

The Ethernet controller being active after shutdown causes the battery
to become drained over a period of time.

[Bug 306737] [NEW] Ubuntu 8.10 Crashes(locks up) - Power source change whilst Ethernet is connected

2008-12-09 Thread BeigeGenius
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu seems to freeze or lock up when connected to a network or the
internet using the built in Ethernet and the power source is changed
(ac/ battery) whilst or before receiving a lot of data. This has also
occurred whilst the laptop computer was idle.

Downloading a file or watching the LAN TV stream via VLC shortly after
unplugging/ plugging in the AC will cause a freeze.
This however is not the case when connected to a network or the internet using
wireless.

[Bug 304428] Re: Kernel Panic - High Volume Network Traffic using e1000e Intel Gigabit Ethernet

2008-12-07 Thread BeigeGenius
Further investigation of the issue has brought me to the conclusion that
changing power source during high network traffic whilst connected to a network
using ethernet causes a crash. It is my opinion that this problem is probably
the e1000e ethernet driver.
Below is an extract from syslog which from what I can tell has logged the
effects of changing power source but not the actual crash. But it may be useful!

Another test confirms that changing power source and then downloading a
file (ubuntu x86 iso from kent uk mirror) after changing power source
will cause a system crash. This does not occur when connected via
wireless!

[Bug 305267] [NEW] iwl3945 Wireless Driver - Random System Freezes

2008-12-04 Thread BeigeGenius
Public bug reported:

When not connected to a wireless access point and the wireless card is idle
scanning for access points the following message is output in both dmesg and
kern.log repeatedly with less than a second in between: [ 119.885976] iwl3945:
Error sending REPLY_LEDS_CMD: iwl3945_enqueue_hcmd failed: -28
[ 119.885994] iwl3945: No space for Tx.

Further investigation lead me to install ubuntu 7.10 and run similar
tests and found that the previous driver ipw3945 did not output these
errors when idle.

The release of kernel 2.6.27-9 made this matter worse and caused me to
revert to kernel 2.6.27-7:14, but this kernel still freezes and the same
errors are occuring.

It is my belief from these logs and comparison between ubuntu 7.10 and
8.10 that when iwl3945 replaced ipw3945 in 8.04 (the reason I did not
update to 8.10 in the first place) it is more than a mere coincidence
that the time I started experiencing system freezes is in fact due to a
flaw in the new wireless driver iwl3945.

[Bug 304428] Re: Kernel Panic - High Volume Network Traffic using e1000e Intel Gigabit Ethernet

2008-12-02 Thread BeigeGenius
The system freezes up completely, I think it may have somehow been linked to
VLC as panics only occured whilst watching remote files/ streams. I noticed the
LAN TV provided by my isp continued to send transmit the stream to me even
after I had closed the client. Also earlier today I attempted to watch movie on
a networked computer using samba using vlc which resulted in a kernel panic.
Unfortunately as the system locks up I am unable to get the relevant log files
so if and when it does it again I will attempt to get a digital photograph
however all that will be shown is the desktop as it was when frozen.

[Bug 263555] Re: [intrepid] 2.6.27 e1000e driver places Intel ICH8 and ICH9 gigE chipsets at risk

2008-12-02 Thread BeigeGenius
Prior to upgrading to kernel 2.6.27-9 No kernel panics were experienced.
However kernel panics seem random they seem to occur during high network
activity when using the Ethernet device (Intel Corporation 82573L Gigabit
Ethernet Controller) which uses the e1000e driver. No reports of hardware
dieing yet and hopefully this bug will be limited to kernel panics!

[Bug 302800] [NEW] Nautilus owner permissions - does not set to sub dirs and files

2008-11-27 Thread BeigeGenius
Public bug reported:

Clicking on Apply Permissions to Enclosed Files under the Permissions tab in
a folders properties does not set the desired owner for all sub folders and
files.
However other permissions such as file access and folder access are set
correctly.
This is an annoyance as if a user is required to set the owner of a large
number of files and/or folders the only alternative is to use chmod from the
CLI!

avoid confusion as this bug is present in the last three ubuntu

I would also like to know why exactly this bug has not been addressed?

pulseaudio-esound-compat (0.9.12-0ubuntu1~ppa5) to 0.9.13-0ubuntu1~ppa2
