[Bug 1858299] Re: This laptop contains a touchpadwhich is not recognized.

I have to correct me, it works with the kernel you linked. I plugged out
my USB mouse and now the touchpad is recognized perfectly. Thank you
very much, Kai-Heng!

2020-01-06 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
Thank you for your quick response. I installed the Linux Kernel Linux
5.3.0-27-generic you linked but there is no change. The touchpad still
doesn't work. Please let me know if I can provide you with some specific
log files.

[Bug 967008] Re: Alt-^ for switching windows does not work

2012-03-29 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
Good catch. Of course it's Alt, not Ctrl in the description above.
Fixed.

It's Alt-^ (the key above the tabulator) in German Keyboard Layout. That
used to work in oneiric, but not in precise. I'll try Alt-` and/or
switching to an English keyboard layout later.

So the hotkey still works for you on precise with an english keyboard?

** Summary changed:

- Ctrl-^ for switching windows does not work
+ Alt-^ for switching windows does not work

** Description changed:

- Pressing Ctrl-^ to switch between windows of the same application does
+ Pressing Alt-^ to switch between windows of the same application does
not work. I tried setting it again in Keyboard Shortcuts, but this did
  not work either.

[Bug 967008] Re: Alt-^ for switching windows does not work

2012-03-29 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
Does not seem to be related to 965921, I checked the switch-group
keybinding in dconf-editor (as shown in
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1933323) and it is set to the
default 'AltAbove_Tab'. Setting it to Alt^ does not help either,
setting it to 'Alta' or 'SuperTab' works though. So it might be an
issue with the Above_Tab key. The key works fine in applications though.

Changing the keyboard layout to en-US does not help, neither does using
Alt` (which is left to the backspace on a German keyboard)

[Bug 848198] Re: Sporadic gconf error messages

2011-10-26 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
I've created a PPA with a fixed package (all four patches applied), it
fixes the gnome-shell issue for me.

https://launchpad.net/~berni/+archive/ppa

Use at your own risk, there is at least one other package for oneiric in
there (multi-arch libxp). Download the packages manually and/or remove
the repository after you have upgraded.

There is also an updated gconf version in the semi-official gnome-shell
PPA at https://launchpad.net/~ricotz/+archive/testing , you might want
to use that instead. A fixed upstream version (3.2.1) should be released
soon according to the gnome-bugs bugtracker.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 848198 ***

Found a german article describing a workaround:

http://linuxundich.de/de/software/gnome-shell-neu-starten-falls-ubersicht-falsch-dargestellt-wird/

basically you need to restart the gnome-shell by pressing Alt-F2 and
then enter 'r' in the window. Worked for me.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 848198 ***

It's hard to believe, but it appears to be a gconf bug, tracked in
#848198 :-)

There are several reports of this: #853582 #844881 #875954

I could reproduce it on my system by doing 'killall -HUP gconfd-2' and
waiting for a couple of minutes. Since this is apparently done on every
software update you see these issues popping up.

I'm marking it as duplicate.

[Bug 855710] Re: Pidgin no TLS/SSL

2011-09-22 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
Fix was easy for me ... I was missing the file /usr/lib/i386-linux-
gnu/libnss3.so which should be included in the package libnss3, but
somehow got lost. I noticed because empathy would not start at all,
while pidgin starts but does not do any SSL.

Reinstalling libnss3 fixed it.

[Bug 855929] [NEW] gnome-shell does not show all running applications

2011-09-21 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
Public bug reported:

Since a few days my gnome-shell desktop does not show all running applications
in the taskswitcher (alt-tab) anymore. This sometimes affects entire
applications (i.e. all terminal windows), sometimes only a subset of them. They
appear in the activities window just fine.
I have no idea what triggers this. They get lost during their runtime and I
have not found a way to bring them back except for closing and reopening the
application.

[Bug 740126] Re: Something blocks compiz randomly several times per day

2011-05-05 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
Unfortunately the http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~sarvatt/lp740126/ does not
fix it for me.

I just had a lockup where the screen was not refreshed anymore except
for the cursor. As before, applications seem to get events (mouse cursor
changes when I scroll in the foreground firefox window), but I don't see
any more changes on the screen.

What has changed is the window content. With the old kernel I always had
a black screen with the cursor, now I have a frozen desktop with the
moving cursor.

[Bug 740126] Re: compiz hangs randomly several times per day

2011-03-23 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
I have a similar bug. In my case the screen stays black except for the
mouse cursor. It is not frozen though, I can move the mouse cursor just
fine and it changes shape when I get in the middle of the screen (over
the invisible password prompt). When I blindly enter my password the
screen gets unlocked, as I can see by moving the cursor around (it
changes shape according to the applications on my invisible workspace).
Only way to regain access so far was to kill the session.

Can any of you still move your mouse when it happens?

[Bug 235258] Re: routes ignored advertised in ipv6 router advertisement packets

2011-03-23 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
Any news here? CONFIG_IPV6_ROUTER_PREF is still not set in natty
(2.6.38-7.38). Since Debian Squeeze ships with it it should be safe to
use.

Looks good to me. I'm not at university right now where I've seen this
issue frequently, but I've tried the patch at home (disabling my IPv4
DHCP server at the first try) and the route is set correctly.

Same here. Interestingly this only affects the settings of wireless
networks, not wired networks. Only way to change anything there is to
remove and recreate them.

[Bug 704812] Re: [natty] broken IPv6 default route

2011-02-20 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
Sorry for the delay, here is the promised debug log. I can still easily
reproduce this problem.

1) Set IPv6 to auto instead of ignore
2) connect to a (wireless?) network where IPv6 RA works fine (the client gets
an autoconfed address and route), but DHCPv4 fails to answer in time (shutdown
the server)
3) after DHCPv4 timeout nm disconnects
4) reconnect to the same network using nm-applet
5) this time make sure DHCPv4 works (start the server again)
6) on successful connect you have two IPv6 default routes, one pointing to the
LL next-hop from RA (correct) and one pointing to the interface without nexthop
(wrong)

It does not happen when
a) the first connection attempt already succeeded
b) IPv6 is set to ignore in the connection profile

Since nm is still not flushing the IPv6 address when the interface goes
down I assume it is recording the list of routes present before step 4
(which includes the correct nexthop to the router) and attempts to readd
them after step 5, but fails to set the next hop correctly.

Interesting side effect, I have to delete the wrong route three times
before it is finally gone. It looks like nm is readding it immediately,
but I don't see anything in the debug log. I could not find the debug
category where it shows adding routes at all.

[Bug 704812] [NEW] [natty] broken IPv6 default route

2011-01-19 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

when setting IPv6 settings to automatic instead of the default ignore
(see my eduroam profile) network-manager adds a static default route
after the connection is established. Unfortunately this default route
has no next-hop and thus breaks connectivity quite badly.

root@schleppi:~# ip -6 route
2001::/32 dev teredo proto kernel metric 256 mtu 1280 advmss 1220 hoplimit
4294967295

fe80::/64 dev is0  proto kernel  metric 256  mtu 1280 advmss 1220 hoplimit
4294967295
fe80::/64 dev teredo proto kernel metric 256 mtu 1280 advmss 1220 hoplimit
4294967295
default via fe80::2d0:3ff:fe3b:f400 dev wlan0 proto kernel metric 1024 mtu
1500 advmss 1440 hoplimit 64
default dev wlan0 proto static metric 1024 mtu 1500 advmss 1440 hoplimit
4294967295 --- this is the broken one

One has to repeatedly delete this static route (I guess nm tries to add
it again) before you have connectivity again.

root@schleppi:~# ip -6 route del default dev wlan0 proto static
root@schleppi:~# ip -6 route del default dev wlan0 proto static
root@schleppi:~# ip -6 route del default dev wlan0 proto static
root@schleppi:~# ip -6 route del default dev wlan0 proto static
RTNETLINK answers: No such process

IPv6 clients learn their default route from RA or from static
configuration, but you cannot just point a default-route to a non-ptp
interface without a next-hop. The kernel will look for every destination
(including ipv6.google.com) on the local network segment and fail after
a 2 second timeout.

[Bug 563895] Re: grub2 fails to boot or install when an LVM snapshot exists

2010-05-28 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
Yes, you are absolutely right. I wanted to stress that it does not seem
to be related to mdadm RAID1 as the original description suggested.
Changed.

** Summary changed:

- grub-install fails when LVM snapshot exists
+ grub2 fails to boot or install when an LVM snapshot exists

[Bug 563895] Re: Disk not found when booting mdadm RAID1 with snapshotted lvm volume

2010-05-28 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
The installation of grub2 fails when _any_ snapshot is present. Not only
on the root filesystem (or boot), not even mounted. In my system it was
a snapshot of a WinXP volume used by KVM. Deleting it worked just fine.

r...@lxbsc02:/# grub-install /dev/sda
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: no mapping exists for `wdc750g-root'.
Auto-detection of a filesystem module failed.
Please specify the module with the option `--modules' explicitly.

This is a clusterf*ck of a bug.

[Bug 560859] Re: My swap memory gets full after 5-6hours of computer usage on 10.04

2010-04-20 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
I have the same problem with a box upgraded from Karmic. Gnome, I almost
exclusively use Firefox, Thunderbird 3, gnome-terminal and pidgin. No
process has apparent high memory consumption. RAM is hardly used, with
1.2G of 2G swapped. Gets gradually worse until one has to restart after
a couple of days. High I/O wait. ureadahead is removed/purged but it
hasn't become much better.

Memory/Swap is not reclaimed when I do a full logout/login cycle, so I
don't think it's an application with a memory leak.

Yes, it is still an issue in Lucid.

Re: [Bug 200047] Re: Pidgin doesn't autoconnect when on ppp network.

2010-04-03 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
This bug (most Ubuntu people seem to think it's a feature) is also
still present in Lucid. I have the very same problem (nm not working
with my UMTS modem).

Reliable fix is to sudo stop network-manager before pidgin is
started.

[Bug 534273] [NEW] Compile with Linux AIO support

2010-03-08 Thread Bernhard Schmidt

qemu-kvm has a faster method of doing I/O on Linux called Linux AIO.
According to my tests and the upstream maintainer

is faster and should not cause any problems.

It is enabled by configure automatically if libaio-dev is added to the

issue, keeps polling +CREG?

The karmic-proposed package also seems to work as expected when you have
had flawless IPv6 before. DNS resolution and connecting to IPv6-enabled
services works fine.

Bug still present in Karmic. Using wvdial to connect to 3G provider over

There is a way, but it has become harder with every release.

- Intrepid: enter something in the away cause field, pidgin will
  connect
- Jaunty: stop NetworkManager while pidgin is running
- Karmic: /sbin/stop network-manager before pidgin is started

This bug has been annoying as hell before, but restarting
network-manager on Karmic does not work reliable. Wireless often stays
down.

This is most definitely NOT related to IPv6 DNS queries. Maybe broken

Re: [Bug 417757] Re: [karmic regression] all network apps / browsers suffer from multi-second delays by default due to IPv6 DNS lookups

2009-11-07 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
Pessimistic estimates say that the problem we suspect (a DNS proxy that
cannot handle queries) affects about 0.5% of the global userbase.
50% of those can easily be fixed with a firmware upgrade of their
router, which is usually a very good idea anyway.

I'm sure there are regions with higher rates if a large provider gave
out broken systems, but generally saying that all Ubuntu 9.10
installations are affected and everyone has to purchase new routers is
pure FUD.

For the record, this bug can easily be tested with the following tools

$ time dig -t a noc.sixxs.net +nofail | grep -e status -e A -e time

;; -HEADER- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 26324

You are only affected _if_ the first query is fast, but the second query
is very slow and/or shows something else than NOERROR in the first line
(SERVFAIL or REFUSED for example). If the DNS query is fine you should
not be affected.

[Bug 417757] Re: [karmic regression] all network apps / browsers suffer from multi-second delays by default due to IPv6 DNS lookups

2009-11-04 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
I strongly disagree, breaking IPv6 globally just because some people sit
on broken resolvers is extremely bad. I suspect the IPv6 users group is
at least as big as the one sitting on broken resolvers, and while the
IPv6 group is getting larger every day the broken resolvers group should
stagnate or even get smaller.

Earlier Ubuntu versions had a patched libc6 that disabled lookups
for AF_UNSPEC _IF_ no global IPv6 addresses were configured on the
system. This could be a way forward and would be in line what Windows is
doing today.

No, it never worked with earlier NetworkManager versions either. As far
as I remember it was the same issue (nm kept polling for AT+CREG?). But
I never investigated further.

This is the most current Dell-branded firmware available, I apparently
cannot flash vanilla Novatel firmwares into the module.

also you could just try and see if using CREG=1 does change anything.

Essentially your second patch with CREG=1 instead of CREG=0? Will do

[Bug 427876] Re: Unable to clean package without having all build-dep

2009-09-26 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
Please find attached the two patches I use. commit-b0e62dc removes the
deletion of pc-bios/*.bin, because they are shipped upstream and git-
buildpackage is unhappy when they are deleted in the clean target.

With those patches applied cleaning without dependencies works fine, but
I'm not sure whether the source tree is in pristine state afterwards. I
never build in the working directory but always use git-
buildpackage/pdebuild.

[Bug 429321] [NEW] [karmic][i915] X freezes randomly with render error

2009-09-14 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
Public bug reported:

Since a couple of weeks (unfortunately I don't know when exactly) X
(Gnome with Composite enabled) is randomly freezing on my Karmic box.
SSH-Login is still possible, SysRq+K or sending a SIGKILL to Xorg does
not work. I have to reboot the system to get a graphical interface
again.

The following message is written on the console (serial console in my
case):

[Bug 405135] Re: Drag drop now working correctly in Thuderbird

2009-08-20 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
I see this on karmic with both Thunderbird 2.0 (with very few
extensions) and with a clean (non-packaged, upstream) version of
Thunderbird 3.0b3 with a fresh profile.

Some GTK issue maybe?

[Bug 415654] [NEW] Import Freeze Exception for isatapd

2009-08-18 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
Public bug reported:

Please consider importing the package isatapd from Debian unstable into
Karmic. It is a very small binary that configures the in-kernel support
for RFC5214 automatic IPv6-in-IPv4 tunnels, which allows clients to
automatically obtain IPv6 connectivity if their network environment does
not support native operation, but their operator does.

[Bug 394263] Re: 2.6.31 kernel breaks 3d for radeon x1600

2009-07-06 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
The problem is fixed for me with 2.6.31-2.15, X is fast as usual again.
One can read in the changelog that radeon KMS was disabled in this
version.

I wonder why this affected me anyway, I have a R600 series chip which is
not supposed to get KMS just yet at all. The now committed KMS is only
up to R500 as far as I know.
