Many Apologies - The information I supplied when I reported this bug in November 2013 was incorrect. The facts are:- NO AUDIO is output via the analogue output sockets (front/rear). I originally stated that this was working NO AUDIO is output over HDMI (however, the video is fine) AUDIO is _/ONLY/_ output digitally via S/PDIF Earlier 12.04, 12.10 and 13.04 versions of Ubuntu were able to output sound/audio over analogue, HDMI and S/PDIF On 10/11/13 03:20, Raymond wrote: http://www.dell.com/us/dfh/p/studio-hybrid/pd the icon of the rear blue jack in the photo is line in you need line in Jack mode to switch between line in and Mic by hint add_in_jack_mode Node 0x18 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40058f: Stereo Amp-In Amp-Out Control: name=Mic Boost Volume, index=0, device=0 ControlAmp: chs=3, dir=In, idx=0, ofs=0 Control: name=Mic Jack, index=0, device=0 Amp-In caps: ofs=0x00, nsteps=0x03, stepsize=0x27, mute=0 Amp-In vals: [0x00 0x00] Amp-Out caps: ofs=0x00, nsteps=0x00, stepsize=0x00, mute=1 Amp-Out vals: [0x80 0x80] Pincap 0x373e: IN OUT HP Detect Trigger Vref caps: HIZ 50 GRD 80 100 Pin Default 0x01a13c40: [Jack] Mic at Ext Rear Conn = 1/8, Color = Blue DefAssociation = 0x4, Sequence = 0x0 Pin-ctls: 0x21: IN VREF_50 Unsolicited: tag=02, enabled=1 Power states: D0 D1 D2 D3 EPSS Power: setting=D0, actual=D0 Connection: 5 0x0c* 0x0d 0x0e 0x0f 0x26 -- email: timms.char...@gmail.com phone:+27 (0) 21 813 6427 cell: +27 (0) 72 230 8049 skype: charlestimms -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1247160 Title: Ubuntu 13.10 [Studio Hybrid 140g, Realtek ALC888, Black Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/1247160/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Can't find any drm commands to run on my pc to check drm/audio status - please advise... Thank you for this - but can you please let me know the location of the relevant configuration file on my system so that I can amend its settings. However, please note that in Ubuntu 12.04, 12.10 and 13.04 it WAS possible to output sound simultaneously from BOTH the HDMI and SP/DIF connections on the Dell Studio Hybrid - i.e. HDMI to TV for audio + video and SP/DIF to my A/V amplifier. Re: [Bug 1247160] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 [Studio Hybrid 140g, Realtek ALC888, Black Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all
The Dell Studio Hybrid provides HDMI, SP/DIF and analogue connectivity for sound/audio output. However, I am only using the HDMI connection of this PC for sound/audio (and video) output. Sound/audio over HDMI from the Dell Studio Hybrid used to work with versions 12.04, 12.10 and 13.04 of Ubuntu but does not work in the latest 13.10 version. There is no problem with the video. Re: [Bug 793592] Re: [Studio Hybrid 140g, Realtek ALC888, Black Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all
Yes, I've also found this to be true on Fedora at any rate... Is there anything that can be done to determine the cause of the bug from booting the Studio Hybrid from either the 10.04 and/or Maverick release CDs and then executing some commands in terminal to find out what the differences are? If I boot from CD with either of these releases I get sound over HDMI - on 11.04 I get nothing! If you think this will help identify the root cause of the bug, as a low tech user, what commands should I try - Original Message - From: Renaud 793...@bugs.launchpad.net To: timms.char...@gmail.com Sent: Saturday, September 03, 2011 3:45 PM Subject: [Bug 793592] Re: [Studio Hybrid 140g, Realtek ALC888,Black Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all By the way Fedora 16 (kernel 3.0 and 3.1) and OpenSuse 11.4 (2.6.37) do not work either (an hdmi output is listed in the sound control panel, but still no sound). -- You received this bug notification because you are subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/793592 Title: [Studio Hybrid 140g, Realtek ALC888, Black Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Dell Studio Hybrid 140g produced sound via HDMI in earlier versions of Ubuntu. Is the following terminal command giving sound on HDMI: speaker-test -D hdmi:Intel -c 2 -t sine If it does not, could you try executing this command alsamixer -D hw:Intel Use arrow keys to find the IEC958 Default PCM control, then press M to mute it. Re: [Bug 793592] Re: [Studio Hybrid 140g, Realtek ALC888, Black Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all
Hi Renaud David OK you can tell from my reply that I'm in no way a technical person but am an enthusiastic supporter and promoter of Ubuntu. Therefore, what I don't understand from your reply David is that in earlier releases of Ubuntu (10 series), when presumably there were individual modules that dealt with audio over HDMI my Dell Studio Hybrid systems worked fine. Now that these individual modules have been combined into one in Ubuntu (11 series) audio over HDMI just doesn't work. Surely this points to where the problem lies? - Original Message - From: David Henningsson 793...@bugs.launchpad.net To: timms.char...@gmail.com Sent: Monday, August 29, 2011 9:23 AM Subject: [Bug 793592] Re: [Studio Hybrid 140g, Realtek ALC888,Black Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all @Renaud, this is by design. If not, it's probably a video driver problem. Will his extra information will help identify the cause of no audio via HDMI in 11.04 with ALC888? When the the Dell Studio Hybrid 140g is booted from the installation cds of both Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10, under Sound Preferences Hardware Internal Audio the following options are listed:- Analog Stereo Input Analog Stereo Duplex (IEC958) Analog Stereo Duplex (IEC958) + Analog Stereo Input Analog Stereo Output Analog Stereo Duplex Regardless of which sound output/duplex option is selected sound IS heard via HDMI - it works perfectly On 11.04, as previously reported, under Sound Preferences Hardware Internal Audio the following options are listed:- Analog Stereo Input Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output + Analog Stereo Input Analog Stereo Output Analog Stereo Duplex IEC958 has been replaced by HDMI in the available options Regardless of which sound output/duplex option is selected sound IS NOT heard via HDMI Running Gnome ALSA Mixer on 11.04 lists two SP/DIF only. Re: [Bug 793592] Re: [Studio Hybrid 140g, Realtek ALC888, Black Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all
Hello Luke Thanks for your assistance. I have now updated the audio drivers following the instructions on the supplied Wiki link - using Terminal. Unfortunately, following a reboot there was no change. I have video via HDMI but no audio. Incidentally, I have a second Dell Studio Hybrid 140G with the same specification as the above. This one too had a fresh install of 11.04. It outputs its video via DVI and audio via optical SP/DIF. This configuration works fine. I've tried connecting this machine too via HDMI, just in case there might be a hardware fault with the other, and the result is exactly the same - i.e. video works via HDMI but the audio does not. On both machines, when I go to Sound Preferences Hardware Internal Audio the following options are listed:- Analog Stereo Input Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output + Analog Stereo Input Analog Stereo Output Analog Stereo Duplex I will now run the apport-collect 793592 so you can get information on my hardware Best Regards Charles - Original Message - From: Luke Yelavich luke.yelav...@canonical.com To: timms.char...@gmail.com Sent: Tuesday, June 07, 2011 3:27 AM Subject: [Bug 793592] Re: [Studio Hybrid 140g, Realtek ALC888,Black Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all Thanks for your report. [Bug 793592] [NEW] [Studio Hybrid 140g, Realtek ALC888, Black Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all
Public bug reported: Dell Studio Hybrid 140g produced sound via HDMI in earlier versions of Ubuntu. However, since doing a fresh install of 11.04, rather than an upgrade I can't get sound over HDMI to work at all. Video is fine.
