[Bug 1958267] Re: "Connection failed" for WPA Enterprise network (e.g. eduroam)

2022-05-13 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
For those of us who used the workaround method by @nfalse in comment 22,
how and when do we undo this workaround so as to be safe and benefit
from the released fix?

[Bug 1958267] Re: "Connection failed" for WPA Enterprise network eduroam

2022-04-26 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Whoops -- actually, my enterprise network was a university's main wifi
(wpa.mcgill.ca), not eduroam. I propose to generalize the title of this
bug by dropping eduroam or changing it to (e.g. eduroam)

[Bug 1958267] Re: "Connection failed" for WPA Enterprise network eduroam

2022-04-26 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
On a Thinkpad X230 I had this problem after upgrading to 22.04.

The recipe in comment 23 by nfalse solved the problem for me.

Thank you (though this is only a temporary workaround, given its use of
"UnsafeLegacyRenegotiation")

[Bug 1929209] Re: [i915] external monitor goes black for several seconds at a time, randomly

2022-04-22 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
No one else has joined this bug, but it has continued to make life with
my expensive monitor extremely annoying.

And despite suggestions above, I am certain this is not a hardware
problem.

Here is new proof:
yesterday, I initiated an upgrade (do-release-upgrade) to 22.04 from 21.10
from the command line.
By chance, I tried full-screening a video while the upgrade was in progress.
Amazingly, it worked flawlessly the entire duration of the upgrade! ! !
As soon as it was done and rebooted, I tried playing that video again and it
did the black-screen / device searching every 3 seconds or so, as it always has.

So, how can I reproduce the thing that the upgrade did?! It said
something at the beginning about disabling screen lock or something like
that, but I have tried turning off all such things in my settings
already.

[Bug 1923459] Re: evince doesn't show filename or PDF title on the title bar

2021-11-07 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
This is reported at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evince/-/issues/1583
(thanks to Michaël Berteaux @Mikenux at
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evince/-/issues/996).

The bug is solved in Evince 40.2, and it looks like Ubuntu 21.10 has
Evince 40.4-2, which would include the fix.

However, this is worth backporting, please: it's really a weird nuisance
for one of the core applications on a desktop computer.

[Bug 1929209] Re: external monitor goes black for several seconds at a time, randomly

2021-07-11 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
You mentioned "intermediate adapters". I'm using a Lenovo Ultradock between my
laptop and the monitor.
This causes no trouble on my Acer B326HK, which is just as high-res, but the
new Samsung monitor continues to do the blackout thing. It's not strictly
reproducible so far (fullscreening does not always cause any problem, and is
not required to cause the problem).

Happily, I have two ultradocks. It happens with both! And the brand new
HDMI cable looks fine.

I cannot try without the ultradock because my laptop does not have an
HDMI port.

No one else has reported this problem, though if it's a hardware fault
with the monitor (my interpretation) then it might be rare. I have
recently upgraded to 21.04 and Wayland.

I am wondering:
Should I buy an adapter from HDMI to VGA, if such a thing exist?

You would be generous to give this any more attention. Thank you!

(Recently,) it only happens when I make something full-screen on the external
monitor. I do not think this is a hardware (which is brand new) problem.
Just now I made a browser full screen and it immediately strted happening every
several seconds for a couple of seconds at a time. I've attached the journal

[Bug 1929209] [NEW] external monitor goes black for several seconds at a time, randomly

2021-05-21 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

At times it is completely debilitating; at other times it does not happen for
hours.
The physical connections are clean and solid.

There are other related behaviours reported in the past, but I am running
Ubuntu 20.10.
I guess the attachments will show that I'm using Intel graphics hardware. The
monitor is a very popular Samsung one.

[Bug 1923381] [NEW] regression: no display when waking from suspend

Can't tell if it's the same problem, but a recent (<1 month) update on a

Since it looks like

 - I never reported it upstream?

I propose to close this! Invalid or Fix Released?

"search" key, but it still does nothing. Pressing the "search" key just gives
me the desktop search.

[Bug 1861025] Re: Keyboard shortcut "Search" shows as disabled, yet it still works, and custom shortcut unable to use the Search key

2020-09-08 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
This problem is no better on 20.04.

-> In the Keyboard Shortcuts dialogue, no function is assigned to the
"Search" key.
-> There is a custom keyboard shortcut assigned to Ctrl-Search. It works
fine.
-> When I try to set a custom shortcut to the Search key, instead, the desktop
pops into zoomed-out-view-all-my-windows view whenever I press the Search key,
even though I have clicked "Set Shortcut" and the key should be trapped

-> Moreover, even if I set the key with the command

gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.media-keys.custom-
keybinding:/org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugins/media-keys/custom-
keybindings/custom8/ binding 'Search'

It now shows up correctly in the dialogue listing shortcuts, but the
action of the key is unchanged: it still just displays the Super-key
overview view rather than carrying out my custom shortcut function

The "Search" key corresponds to pressing the F10 key, without the Fn
modifier, on this Lenovo T450s, running 20.04.

Please help me disable this behaviour that seems hard-wired to this key!
This is a regression since 19.10, as mentioned before.

[Bug 1883964] Re: pdb debugger in ipython3 unusable due to "QObject: Cannot create children for a parent that is in a different thread." errors when using matplotlib

2020-06-18 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
>From the ipython bug report on github,
https://github.com/ipython/ipython/issues/12348, the following solves
this bug:

`pip3 install --upgrade --user prompt_toolkit`

which upgraded me to prompt-toolkit-3.0.5

Does that mean that this should be a dependency in some recent Ubuntu
upgrade chain?

[Bug 1883964] [NEW] pdb debugger in ipython3 unusable due to "QObject: Cannot create children for a parent that is in a different thread." errors when using matplotlib

2020-06-17 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

I launch

ipython3 --pdb

and then type

import  matplotlib.pyplot as plt
1/0

This results in an unending stream of error messages like

QObject: Cannot create children for a parent that is in a different thread.

(Parent is QApplication(0x2e0c560), parent's thread is QThread(0x2b14330),
current thread is QThread(0x7f479c00a660)

making it impossible to see what one is typing or the response.

[Bug 1776873] Re: Whitelisted allowedURLschemes breaks some desktop apps

2020-04-18 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
To @kfunk @axet @troyready: That worked perfectly for me. Thank you so
much!!!

For those like me for whom these are all magical incantations, here's my
sequence aggregated from advice above:

Press the Ubuntu/Super key and type "Software" and pick the one that is
called "Software & Updates". On the first tab, make sure "source code"
is checked. Then, open a terminal and paste the following (line by line
up to the apt line, then the rest can go together):

```
apt-get build-dep snapd
TMPDIR=$(mktemp -d)
cd $TMPDIR
apt-get -y source snapd
sed -i 's/"http", "https", "mailto", "snap", "help"/"http", "https", "mailto",
"snap", "help", "apt", "zoommtg", "slack"/'
snapd-*/usersession/userd/launcher.go
sed -i 's/!osutil.GetenvBool(reExecKey, true)/true/' snapd-*/cmd/cmd_linux.go
cd snapd-* && dch -l$(hostname) fix_missing_app_types
cd ..
cd snapd-* && DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=nocheck debuild -b -uc -us
cd ..
sudo dpkg -i snapd_*.deb
sudo service snapd restart
killall snap
```

wow, @kfunk and @axet, thank you so much for this effort!

Alas, I get stuck at the very first step:

sudo apt-get build-dep snapd

[Bug 1776873] Re: Whitelisted allowedURLschemes breaks some desktop apps

2020-03-23 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Yeah, this can be labelled a COVID-relevant bug, since there are
countless new users flooding to Zoom, etc...

It looks like this is being worked on within the last four days:

https://github.com/snapcore/snapd/pull/8304

But only for zoom?!

And I'm not sure of the nature of the fix or who would get it.

This may reflect the latest inclusions (see line 95 or so) ? It shows
"apt" being included:

https://github.com/snapcore/snapd/blob/master/tests/main/xdg-
open/task.yaml

[Bug 1776873] Re: Whitelisted allowedURLschemes breaks some desktop apps

2020-03-23 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
If the approach so far is to individually whitelist classes of links,
surely can't this be better dealt with by doing something similar to how
Chromium responds to me clicking on a downloaded file: it asks me if
it's okay to have snap launch that file? Can't we do this for links
that go to xdg-open without downloading a file?

[Bug 1866277] [NEW] Power Saving settings "Wi-Fi can be turned off to save power" does not work as advertised

2020-03-05 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

In Settings -> Power under the "Power Saving" section, there are the
following two on/off slider options:

Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi can be turned off to save power.

Bluetooth
Bluetooth can be turned off to save power.

Rather than controlling something to do with power-saving, eg. when battery is
low or the system is inactive, these appear to immediately turn off wifi, and
bluetooth, respectively, when the machine is a laptop and is unplugged.

Instead, they should control something more useful, or be relabeled.

[Bug 1776873] Re: Whitelisted allowedURLschemes breaks some desktop apps

2020-03-02 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Agreed. This seems like fundamental desktop functionality to me.

My approach so far is to right click on the link, copy it, and then in a
terminal type

xdg-open ""

where is the pasted link.

In case it's useful, here's an updated list from above, but clearly there
should be a way for people to choose themselves what to whitelist. Can someone
explain how to add to the whitelist?

[Bug 1861025] [NEW] Keyboard shortcut "Search" shows as disabled, yet it still works, and custom shortcut unable to use the Search key

2020-01-27 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

Prior to the last upgrade (19.10), I used the Search key for one of my custom
keyboard shortcuts.
(I am using a Lenovo T450s, so the Search key is the button which works as F10
when the Fn key is also pressed.)

In 19.10, this is no longer possible. The Search key is initially set up
with the Search function, ie opens a magnifying glass text entry box to
look for things. If I disable that function in the Keyboard dialogue,
it still works!

And therefore I cannot use the key as I wish.

[Bug 1858439] [NEW] When docked, laptop switches to HDMI/Display port, instead of headphones. Headset microphone not available. [20BXCTO1WW, Realtek ALC3232]

2020-01-06 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

When my laptop is docked, I used to use a headset plugged into the dock for
meetings. Both microphone and audio out were connected to my headset.

Since the last update, my sound does not work like it used it, and I
cannot make it work like I want.

In particular, whenever I dock:

 - the output device changes to "HDMI/DisplayPort 2 - Built-in Audio". I do
not know what that is (nothing is connected to HDMI), but it results in strange
audio behaviour in which I can hear something through headphones but it's faint
and does not respond to volume control.
 - audio input switches to internal microphone. Worse, there is no longer the
choice to use the headset microphone, which is mandatory for those in my
meeting not to hear my keyboard taps.

[Bug 1850933] Re: after upgrade 19.04 to 19.10, apache serves php code

2019-11-08 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
This is kind of useless, but I do not now know why I mentioned php5. I may have
seen mention of it but I'm not sure. I hope that you can see everything more
definitively in the logs. It looks to me like it was php7.2 that is mostly
recently mentioned in the logs, but you can read them better than I: I have
sent emails to paelzer and ahasenack with the files Andreas asked for.
Thanks

Can I safely just zip up the entire dist-upgrade? It has some non- *.log files

And Can I easily share these privately somehow? I'd rather not post the apache

[Bug 1833114] Re: print page dialog latency when trying to cancel or to save

Actually, it is not true that this is solved under 19.10. All that has
happened is that the latency has shortened to 1-2 seconds. It is *still*
the case that during that time, I cannot get the focus in any other
window or do anything else in the operating system.

[Bug 1851134] [NEW] setting custom keyboard shortcut fails for certain keys

2019-11-03 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

I click on settings in menu or press my settings icon key (above F9 key on
Lenovo T450s keyboard). Navigate to "Keyboard Shortcuts". Scroll to bottom to
press "+" to add a custom shortcut. Define function, then click on "Set
Shortcut...". Then I press the "Explorer" key, which is above the F12 on my
keyboard. Instead of setting the shortcut, it brings up a file browser.
I can set my shortcut to shift-Explorer, but not to Explorer. This is even
though no other keyboard shortcut listed is set to this key "Explorer". The
"Home folder" Launcher is set to "Disabled".
Changing the "Home folder" launcher keyboard shortcut to something else does
not help.

Instead, once I click on "set Shortcut", it should listen to whatever I
choose.

The same problem exists for the "Search" key.

[Bug 1833114] Re: print page dialog latency when trying to cancel or to save

2019-10-31 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Yes, I have now very grudgingly upgraded to 19.10 and the problem seems
to be resolved.

This problem was new at some point in 19.04 (ie did not exist at first
with 19.04) and I do not think pressuring eople to upgrade (so soon
after a release) is a good solution.

On the other hand, strangely, no one else has reported the bug.

Thanks, Olivier!

[Bug 1833114] Re: print page dialog latency when trying to cancel or to save

2019-10-19 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
This problem does not affect a brand new user if I create one. So it is
maybe to do with having upgraded, and having old settings? How do I
reset the relevant settings?

@seb128, I added the log when you asked. This bug affects all file saves
/ loads on all applications on Ubuntu, so it is very debilitating. Can't
imagine why there are no other complainants.

[Bug 1838132] Re: file browser hangs system for several seconds on save/load/exit

2019-08-15 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Un-locking the screen/desktop now also takes much longer than it used
to. After correctly entering the password or scanning a fingerprint,
nothing happens for a long time, and then eventually the screen is
unlocked. Could that be related?

Sorry, I suspect it's specific to whatever part of the OS supplies dialogues to
save files, but I'm not sophisticated enough to know what that means.

[Bug 1838132] [NEW] file browser hangs system for several seconds on save/load/exit

2019-07-27 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

For the last month, saving a file or printing a file from my browser or
any other application, or even trying to quit the file browser without
doing anything, causes the file dialog and the entire system to hang
(become unresponsive) for several seconds.

[Bug 1833114] [NEW] print page dialog latency when trying to cancel or to save

2019-06-17 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

Since less than a month ago, using the print page dialog (which for me
defaults to saving as PDF) is outlandishly slow. Once opened, if I try
to close it (click cancel / press Esc) or to use it (click Save or press
Enter), there is no visible response, and my system hangs for 10
seconds. After that though, the operation concludes successfully and
things return to normal.

This did not used to happen. Closing or submitting the print-to-PDF used
to result in the pop-up window closing immediately and the browser
regaining responsiveness.

[Bug 1779564] Re: pip3 installation does not give expected result

2018-07-07 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Hi. sudo got the same result: the pip3 binary was not there.

apt remove followed by apt install did fix the problem. Sorry I did
not try that earlier. I do not know what could have been the problem. If
my apt log history could be helpful, we can keep digging. Otherwise, I
will understand if there are more important things for you to work on.

Thanks!

Re: [Bug 1779564] Re: pip3 installation does not give expected result

2018-07-07 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
No, it's not there:

$/usr/bin/pip3
bash: /usr/bin/pip3: No such file or directory

The only thing I can do (and have been doing) is python3 -m pip

though maybe that is not even the right thing to be doing.

Python3 works. I just checked the original symptoms, and they are the
same.

Evince sometimes gets into a state when it scrolls all the way up or all

2018-04-12 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
In the files attached above (and reattached here), the errors are
repeated in `debug` because I clicked once on "try again" at the error
dialog.

I realize I grabbed the log files before clicking "continue anyway".
So now I'm uploading the same files, but with the rest of the log after
clicking "continue anyway", until the install process is fully hung and
unresponsive.

2018-04-12 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
What is the justification for the duplicate tag, and I am removing it.
This bug happens during a fresh install (non-upgrade) from ISO, as
opposed to an upgrade. It also seems to about ubi-usersetup, not
mentioned in #1756862.

[Bug 1761377] Re: Installation fails when using an existing partition for /home : "ubi-usersetup failed with exit code 141" when installing (or upgrading to) 18.04 from USB

2018-04-11 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
This bug needs to have the base installation / installer package tag,
not just the ubuntu-release-upgrader. I cannot find out what that's
called.

[Bug 1761377] Re: Failed installation: "ubi-usersetup failed with exit code 141" when installing (or upgrading to) 18.04 from USB

2018-04-11 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
I have tried this again using the March 9 version of ISO, and have an
important detail:

When installing to just one partition, I do not this error, and the
distribution installs fine and seems to work. However, when during the
installation I do a manual partition setup, and I install the OS to a /
partition and use an existing partion for /home, then I get this ubi-
usersetup error when submitting the "Who are you?" page.

In this case the installation fails completely.

** Summary changed:

- Failed installation: "ubi-usersetup failed with exit code 141" when
installing (or upgrading to) 18.04 from USB
+ Installation fails when using an existing partition for /home :
"ubi-usersetup failed with exit code 141" when installing (or upgrading to)

[Bug 1761377] Re: "ubi-usersetup failed with exit code 141" when upgrading 17.10 to 18.04 from USB

2018-04-05 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
The error occurs in immediate response to submitting the
username/password dialog box.

I chose "try again", got the same result, so chose "Ignore". The
installation hung (processes go to zero; there's a busy pointer in the
install window, but otherwise system is working), having made my
root/install partition unusable.

Next, I tried a fresh install into that partition, and got the same problem.
(So now my computer is left unusuable.)

[Bug 1761377] [NEW] "ubi-usersetup failed with exit code 141" when upgrading 17.10 to 18.04 from USB

2018-04-04 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

Summary says it all. I chose to updgrade my distribution using today's 18.04
candidate on USB. While on the screen for choosing username, I got a window
"ubi-usersetup crashed" which gives the error
"ubi-usersetup failed with exit code 141" and warns the install/upgrade could
fail.

Release after release, Ubuntu refuses to acknowledge the existence of
Canada's second largest city.
When you click on Montreal's location in the map for choosing location

Worse, if you start typing Montreal, it gives you two options. If you
pick either of them, the "Continue" button remains greyed. You may not

[Bug 1747199] [NEW] Cannot monitor nor stop/resume automatic deja-dup backup: monitor window absent

2018-02-03 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

In latest versions of deja dup, there is no window created to monitor
the progress of an automated backup. This means there's no way to tell
how much is left to go, and no way to stop it cleanly if it is taking
too long or if one wishes to resume it later.

It should, I think, still be the case that when an automatic backup is
started, a window appears which shows the status/progress, offers
details, and gives an option to abort or pause the backup process.

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 1745874] [NEW] Contradictory and unclear completion report: "Not all files could be backed up" "Your files were successfully backed up"

2018-01-28 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

When Deja Dup finished, it sent a message to my OS saying that the
backup was finished but that not all files could be backed up. I
clicked on the message to get more information, and it simply
disappeared.

I found the dialog window from deja dup and it says:

Backup Finished

Your files were successfully backed up and tested.

With no more comment, it then listed two files (full paths).
Presumably these are files that were not backed up, yet the window says
nothing about that.

[Bug 1722454] Re: Duplicity fails with MemoryError

2018-01-25 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1720159 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1720159

Is it really a duplicate? I have now upgraded to the supposed fix of
#1720159

$ apt show duplicity
Package: duplicity
Version: 0.7.16+bzr1347-0ubuntu1~ubuntu17.10.1

... but still get the same error as before, and it's not the same error report
as listed in the supposed dup:
(by the way, this has real consequences. My motherboard just failed while my
backups have not been happening due to this bug: much stress!)

[Bug 1742217] [NEW] New line cannot be deleted (paragraphs cannot be merged) in tracked changes

2018-01-09 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

Start new document. Type "one", then press enter, then type "two". Now turn on
tracked changes. Delete the newline, ie to merge "one" and "two" into one word.
Now compile the document to PDF.

Result:
PDF shows the two words on separate lines.

Expected result:
The newline was deleted in tracked changes, so it should no longer exist.

[Bug 1600661] Re: Simple document doesn't compile: "Limit controls must follow a math operator"

2017-12-13 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
I know nothing about these classifications. I would choose "won't fix" for this
kind of thing, since it is LyX's (fair) choice to support GUI constructs which
won't compile in LaTeX, rather than an invalid complaint. (Like Churchill's
democracy, LaTeX sucks but it's better than anything else).
However, launchpad won't let me choose "won't fix".
I don't much care what label it gets.
Thanks!

[Bug 1735216] [NEW] Wacom UI highly insufficient

2017-11-29 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

I've been asked to post a bug (feature request?) here
(https://askubuntu.com/questions/980892/xsetwacom-wont-find-wacom-
tablet-under-17-10-but-did-with-17-04-multiple-cur) on the following
grounds:

The UI offered in Wayland for controlling a graphics tablet (such as my Wacom
Bamboo Touch on a Thinkpad T450s under Ubuntu 17.10) is nowhere near a
replacement for xsetwacom's functionality:
This tablet has both touch and a stylus. Wayland seems to know that.

 (1) a UI is never a replacement for a CLI. I have scripts which
controlled the tablet under X11, e.g. to turn touch on and off. Now I
cannot use Wayland because even if the UI was fixed, my scripts won't
work.

 (2) Wayland UI does not offer option to turn touch off

 (3) Wayland UI does not offer option to rotate the pad

 (4) Mapping the tablet (touch) to a single monitor does not work (it
still spans both my monitors)

 (5) Mapping the tablet (touch) to absolute coordinates does not work
(it is still relative)

Indeed, and you correctly marked the Duplicity bug invalid. But surely the
Ubuntu(Duplicity) bug is not invalid!? Well, no one else has complained yet.
Thank you!

[Bug 1021375] Re: Nautilus says the USB stick is read only when it is not

2017-10-07 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
On Latest 17.04, killall nautilus and restarting nautilus doesn't help.
Maybe I am not doing the right thing in detail.

So for a couple of years now, every time I present something at a
conference, I panic because I'm not going to be able to write my PDF
file on a USB key in order to share it -- thanks to this bug. This is
nutty.
