[Bug 659143] Re: 64bit-only: regression: kernels =2.6.34: rt2800pci: load firmware Error with ralink [1814:0781]

2010-12-13 Thread Daniel T Chen
commit 412b31334b831a8c2909afaca017c5a236ac2dd0
Author: Wolfgang Kufner wolfgang.kuf...@gmail.com
Date: Mon Dec 13 12:39:39 2010 +0100

rt2x00: Fix firmware loading regression on x86_64.

Commit 6175ddf06b6172046a329e3abfd9c901a43efd2e changes the way
memcpy_toio() works for x86_64, causing firmware loading to fail for
some Ralink WLAN devices with the rt2800pci driver since linux 2.6.34.
This causes the log message: phy0 - rt2800pci_load_firmware: Error -
PBF system register not ready..

Fix this by using __iowrite32_copy instead of memcpy_toio().

[Bug 688272] Re: Please add module-raop-discover and module-zeroconf-discover to default.pa

2010-12-11 Thread Daniel T Chen
My perception is that adding it contributes fairly negligible overhead.
The questions are:

1) Are there any security-related downsides to have them enabled by default?
2) Is this an often-requested feature?

Fortunately the former is easier to address than the latter (i.e., it
could just be enabled). I'm certainly in favor of having it enabled,
but I'm not well-acquainted with the former.

[Bug 671425] Re: stuttering sound since 10.10

2010-12-07 Thread Daniel T Chen
Thanks for the affirmative feedback regarding the sampling rate parameter.
Unfortunately pulse has no way to detect that it *must* use this sampling rate,
so I've marked this bug wontfix until one of the following occurs:
1) upstream determines, and implements, a method of automatically detecting and
choosing such a sampling rate per sink and/or source;
2) upstream determines that this functionality must be resolved at a lower
level, i.e., in the alsa-driver or alsa-lib portion of the stack.

You should not be running pulseaudio or `pactl stat` as root, generally.
(There are very niche situations that are advisable, but this very
likely isn't one.)

Note that we can't wholesale revert the application of that patch. Your
symptom is tied to your VIA hardware, which is known not to work
correctly. (However, there is no consensus on how to fix it.) Other
manufacturers have 'Master Front's that work correctly.

Followed up in e-mail:

Re: [Bug 685249] [NEW] [ICH4 - Intel 82801DB-ICH4] pactl stat failed to find default card

2010-12-04 Thread Daniel T Chen
One of the following quirks is necessary, and I'll explain them:

1) mute_led is probable for your case, but I need to confirm the next option
isn't more appropriate. Briefly, it enables the proper led toggling state
when you press (un)mute.

2) hp_mute_led does what (1) does but also binds the Master and
Headphones/Front/PCM mixer elements. Use this one if the volume control in
pulseaudio acts weirdly such that changing the volume doesn't affect Master
appropriately.

To test which you should use, please append the following line to
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:
options snd-intel8x0 ac97_quirk=foo
, where foo is one of the two quirks described above. You'll need to reboot
to effect changes properly.
