[Bug 1301607] Re: Ambiance Combo box - black highlighted text and scroll arrows

2014-06-02 Thread Dario Ruellan
Thanks Dennis. I'll test your solution, but I think it worth the
attention of the theme team for approval and merge.

[Bug 1301607] Re: Ambiance Combo box - black highlighted text and scroll arrows

2014-04-13 Thread Dario Ruellan
Well, that report is for 12.04, mainly GTK2. I think the problem is that
the fix is not compatible with GTK3 (the attribute cascades into the new
combos, or an explicit declaration is needed). If Settings are up to
date with GTK3, perhaps the fix is no longer needed.

Thanks Jared for the confirmation.
I've added the Ubuntu Theme team to the report, but could not find Andrew Cimi
to subscribe him.
I'm going to bring attention of the QA team over this, to see if someone can
fix it before the release.

[Bug 1301607] [NEW] Dropdown menues - black highlighted text and scroll arrows

2014-04-02 Thread Dario Ruellan
Public bug reported:

To reproduce:
Open files
Right-click on any file or folder and select properties
On permissions, open any dropdown

The highlighted item has black text over orange background, but I'm pretty sure
should be white over orange.
Also, scroll arrows (when the dropdown reaches the top or bottom of the screen)
are black over dark gray, barely visibles.

I'm pretty sure this is not by design, and also could be an usability
issue due to the lack of contrast.

Screenshot attached.

[Bug 1301655] [NEW] Buttons on the Shutdown/logout dialogs lacks click feedback

2014-04-02 Thread Dario Ruellan
Public bug reported:

On the Shutdown and the Logout modal dialogs, buttons have a rollover effect,
but they don't have any feedback effect when clicking or touching them.
Sometimes you have a delay until the system visually starts the shutdown or
logout action, and as an user, the overall impression is the dialog being
unresponsive.

Just a small feedback like the button flashing a couple of times could
be welcome.

[Bug 1149545] Re: Launcher number for the last (not-locked) application doesn't show up

2014-01-27 Thread Dario Ruellan
I believe this is by design. Non-locked apps are not numbered. If you lock the
app, a number is assigned.
The only non-consistent thing I can see is: if you lock the app (number
assigned) and the unlock it, keeps the number until you close it.

The audio hardware is detected as HDA Intel -- IDT 92HD81B1X5
Volume levels are good, a bit low but ok. Headphones levels are a bit off (Bug
#1047864) but overall seems to work fine out of the box.

[Bug 1072135] Re: Cancelling a file transfer should delete the incomplete file on the destination path

2013-02-10 Thread Dario Ruellan
** Description changed:

This is not a bug but a possible usability improvement.

  Test case:
- - Open Nautilus
- - Split panes using F3
- - Copy/move a big file form one pane to another
- - Cancel the transfer using the X button.
+  - Open Nautilus
+  - Open a second folder on a tab
+  - Copy/move a big file form one tab to another
+  - Cancel the transfer using the X button.

The unfinished file remains on the destination folder, now, since this
file is incomplete (possibly unusable) and the user directly stated that
he/she don't want to transfer this file, I think that is safer to delete
the destination copy alltogether. Otherwise could be indexed and cause
  some confusion.

[Bug 1072135] Re: Canceled copy/move operations should not left incomplete files

2013-02-10 Thread Dario Ruellan
Seems to be (still) a problem on Nautilus 3.6.3: if you cancel a file copy, the
unfinished file is left over in the destination folder (without any indication
the file is not complete).
The upstram bug seems very old (targetting version 2.16.x), I'll try to reopen
it on the 3.x branch, and reasign the bug here.

[Bug 1038785] Re: Inconsistent behaviour calling windows focus on another workspace

2013-01-12 Thread Dario Ruellan
Compiz 0.9.8.6 and I can reproduce it again. Not sure if this is a
regression or I missed something on my previous tests. To reproduce:

  - Switch to the workspace on the right (ctrl+alt+right).
  - Open Emapthy
  - Dock Empathy to the right (super+ctrl+right)
  - Switch to the workspace on the left (ctrl+alt+left)
  - Click on the Empathy icon on the Launcher

Instead of a workspace switch, the app is misplaced on the current
workspace.

[Bug 1038785] Re: Inconsistent behaviour calling windows focus on another workspace

2013-01-12 Thread Dario Ruellan
I'm going to bring this to the Ninja team, to anyone who wants to help
me troubleshoot this.

I bet the problem is related to Compiz's grid plugin. Seems to me that
when you right-snap a window, the size of the window exceeds the size of
the desktop by one or two pixels. Thats enough to wrap contents to
another workspace and trick Unity to think the window is misplaced.

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2012-12-13 Thread Dario Ruellan
I also miss this feature, but I agree that the way Windows does it did not make
sense: the single-click-wait mechanism is inconsistent.
I prefer OSX method of click-and-hold, this also has some analogy with
touch-and-hold, and feels more natural.

The F2 shourtcut works fine (to rename a file/folder you need to touch
the keyboard anyway), but a shortcut mechanism on the touchpad/mouse
seems more convenient and easy to remember.

[Bug 1075368] Re: Inconsistent bookmarking of mounted media or network shares Nautilus/GTK+

2012-12-01 Thread Dario Ruellan
Thanks Timothy. I don't know why I forgot to provide the version info, perhaps
I thought I was using ubuntu-bug for the report.
Anyway, Its Ubuntu 12.04 and Nautilus 3.4.2.

I've tested it with two bookmarks. The first is a samba share to a
Windows 7 folder containing spaces in the name (My Documents). The other
is an external HD.

On the screenshot, I'm using a GTK3 dialog from Gedit 3.4.1. You can see that
the samba bookmark is shown as a path, and the HD partition is missing from the
bookmarks list (but listed as mounted media).
If I try the same using a GTK2 dialog from Firefox 17, the samba bookmark is
shown just fine, but the mounted media is also missing.

So, in the case of the bookmark name shown as a path: seems a GTK3
regression. In the case of the missing mounted media bookmark: its by
design or a bug ported from GTK2.

Hope that helps.

[Bug 1038785] Re: Inconsistent behaviour calling windows focus on another workspace

2012-12-01 Thread Dario Ruellan
I can't reproduce this anymore on Compiz 0.9.7.9
I'm going to try reproduce it again later, and mark the bug as invalid if I
can't.

[Bug 1026090] Re: Top of software item screen is unattractive

2012-11-30 Thread Dario Ruellan
Hi Matthew. Thanks to taking the time and review the mockups.
I agree with you about the third column. Is not very useful and can cause
problems on narrow resolutions, like a vertical tablet. Better to get rid of it.

I also agree about the position of the install button on M3: on a
widscreen monitor it ends away from the price and the title, but I'm not
sure about M2. Perhaps I approached the problem from the wrong concept,
but for me, its not that the install button is away from the price, but
away from everything that represents the product (but the screenshot).
It is also badly positioned for discovery: most of the controls and
links are on the left side.

On M2 the install button is right below the icon, and left of the main
product info. I don't think that the average user can miss it or think
that is not related to the product (and its price).

I don't want to be intrusive on your design process (I started without
reading any documentation), but if you're OK, I can keep exploring the
idea, eliminating the third column to see how the screenshot could be
placed.

Thanks again.

[Bug 1052481] Re: Nautilus's split pane lacks an indicator for the active pane

2012-11-29 Thread Dario Ruellan
@Chris: Yes, but as RaduStoica pointed out, this bug in particular seems
more related to the Ambiance theme, so perhaps it worth to keep it on
papercuts and try to gain approval from someone on Design, since it
affects an LTS.

2012-11-29 Thread Dario Ruellan
Thanks Brian. Great news.

I first reported the problem using an ext2 filesystem as persistent

environment and then install the proposed package.

Lets see if other users can test it on an upgrade scenario, since my own
12.10 installation worked just fine.

Hi Chris.
As far as I know, the Split Pane function will be implemented from scratch on
3.6.x (http://blogs.gnome.org/mclasen/2012/08/30/on-nautilus/). That means that
this bug and #1082922 are invalid on this branch.

[Bug 1082922] [NEW] Open with bar breaks the extra pane with

2012-11-25 Thread Dario Ruellan
Public bug reported:

Description:
When you insert a media that can be handled using a specific app, Nautilus
shows a bar with an Open with button, on were it suggest a proper app.
If you have the extra pane active (F3), this bar forces the pane to expand,
narrowing the other one.

Test case:
Insert a media containing, for example, music (if asked for an app, just close
the window).
Open Nautilus
Create another pane using F3.
Select the inserted media.

[Bug 1052481] Re: Nautilus's split pane lacks an indicator for the active pane

2012-11-25 Thread Dario Ruellan
Hi RaduStoica. Thanks for taking the time to investigate this.

About the Nautilus versions issue, Ubuntu is using the 3.4 branch on its
LTS release, and even if they backport an update to 3.6 (unlikely), the
majority of users should keep the 3.4 for 3 years at least, so I think
it worth fixing.

[Bug 1026090] Re: Top of software item screen is unattractive

2012-11-22 Thread Dario Ruellan
I've explored the problem a little further on two new mockups.
On Ubuntu_Software_Center_mockup2 I've played repositioning some elements in
a three column layout. On Ubuntu_Software_Center_mockup3 I've added some
decorations and boxes, trying to mimic the Home page. That helped to create new
areas to explore.

Hope this helps to bring some ideas and help improve the Software Center on the
future.
I'm writting some notes on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/druellan/software-center-mockup-notes about particular
challenges and odd things I've found working on the problem.

I'm also puzzled about the yellow/gray bar with dotted borders. I'm

(perhaps the theme default?).

[Bug 1080108] [NEW] Amazon name and descriptions need improvement

2012-11-17 Thread Dario Ruellan
Public bug reported:

Amazon is a collection of example scripts for integration of webapps
into Unity's Launcher, or at least this is what I understand reading the
actual description and looking into the Launchpad page.

https://launchpad.net/webapps-applications

Looking at the icon, the name, and reading the brief description, an
average user could think that this package is an official Amazon webapp,
which, as far as I understand, its not.

If all of the above is correct, the description, the name, and the icon
should state clear that this package is intended for developers or
advanced users.

[Bug 1080120] [NEW] Ubuntu One Music webapp description is misleading

2012-11-17 Thread Dario Ruellan
Public bug reported:

Similar to the Amazon webapp case, the script seems to be the official
webapp integration for UbuntuOne Music Store, but the description says
that it is a collection of example scripts.

Proposal (english is not my first language, please recheck):

Your music, one click away. The Ubuntu One Music webapp not only helps
you to quickly launch and access your music, but also nicely integrates
into your desktop, adding features like notifications and badges.

On all webapps could be nice to add a simple description. Below is a
nice extract from an I Love Ubuntu article:

Ubuntu Web Apps are a new web-based technology, mainly combining the
power and versatility of the web with the warmth and handiness of the
Ubuntu desktop.

[Bug 1080201] [NEW] Group checkbox behaviour seems incorrect

2012-11-17 Thread Dario Ruellan
Public bug reported:

Checking/unchecking the group checkbox seems to flip the value of its
child checkboxes instead of mark all/mark none.

Test case:
Ask for updates, make sure the packages are grouped by source.
Uncheck the first child of a group.
Click on the global checkbox of the same group.

What I get:
The first child is set to checked, the rest are set unchecked, like a
binary NOT operation.

What I expect:
Child checkboxes should mimic the group checkbox status.
If the grup checkbox is set to unchecked, all childs must be unchecked.
If the group checkbox is set to checked, all childs must be checked.

[Bug 765438] Re: On startup, the backlight is off on laptop

2012-11-16 Thread Dario Ruellan
Upstream is asking this: Please try i915.invert_brightness=1 module parameter
with kernel version v3.5
or later, see if that fixes the brightness issue, and report 'lspci -vmmnn' if
it does.

The op is taking a long time to reply, that's why they are closing until the
test can be done.
Anyone is welcome to try and post back any result.

[Bug 901241] Re: price is not noticeable

2012-11-14 Thread Dario Ruellan
Well, yes. Looks odd.
I like Robert proposal, but the button not always says buy, for example if
you already purchased the app.

I've made a mockup just to explore the proposal and I'm going to bring
this into Papercuts project. Perhaps can be fixed just changing the
button position.

[Bug 1077190] Re: Minimized windows are kept attached to a workspace

2012-11-12 Thread Dario Ruellan
Thanks Daniel.
If the behavior is expected and designed, then I'm OK with it.

I'm starting to use Unity as a production environment, and there are
things that make noise in my workflow, but I can't be sure if I'm
biased by previous experiences or there are actual concerns on
usability.

About this one: I'm trying to wrap my head around a normal user
experiencing with mutiple desktops for the first time, and the minimize-
thing is a tricky one:

On one hand, Launcher apps and minimized apps are very similar, users might
expect a consistent behaviour (the app reattaching to the current workspace).
On other hand, a minimized app has already been attached to a workspace, and I
agree with you that perhaps is not a good idea to change this (since the user
has already a way to reorder apps on workspaces).

Anyway, thanks again for the reply.

[Bug 894408] Re: No divider line between ‘History’ and ‘Progress’ toolbar buttons

2012-11-11 Thread Dario Ruellan
Well, I believe that currently there are no dividers of any kind on the
toolbar: the dropdown icon acts as a divider for All Software and Installed,
but thats it.
Also, MatthewPaulThomas whitepapers
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter#Main_window seems to indicate this is
intentional.
In sum, looks more like a wishlist than a bug to me.

[Bug 996758] Re: Browse software by publisher

2012-11-10 Thread Dario Ruellan
This is not the first time I run into this suggestion. Some developers
are worried that potential users could have problems trying to reach

their products, and they have a point. Software Center's dev team should
take a closer look into this.

[Bug 8949] Re: Opening a deleted 'recent document' results in a new file.

2012-11-06 Thread Dario Ruellan
Seems fixed on GTK3, Ubuntu 12.10.

If you delete a file, no longer shows on the recent document list.
If you delete a file while the file selector dialog is open, the list did not
autorefresh (the deleted file is still listed).
If you then open the previously deleted file, the editor (Gedit on my tests)
open a blank document, but no file is created unless you save the document.

[Bug 16492] Re: Mouse pointer should disappear when keyboard is in use and mouse isn't

2012-11-06 Thread Dario Ruellan
Ubuntu 12.10

Gedit, Ubuntu Software Center (GTK3): the mouse pointer gets hidden when I
start typing.
Firefox, OpenOffice (GTK2): the mouse pointer remains on screen when I start
typing, even if the cursor is right above the typed text.

Seems that currently its a GTK2 problem only. Firefox is working to
bring a GTK3 version. Don't know about OpenOffice or other core GTK2
apps. Perhaps worth fixing.

[Bug 1061600] Re: open file dialog does not have mounts

2012-11-05 Thread Dario Ruellan
Hi xoristzatziki. I believe you're referring to bookmarked paths of mounted
filesystems, that are usually listed on the left, just below Places.
I can confirm those bookmarks are not listed in Firefox's open dialog, but you
can see them on other apps, like Gedit's open dialog.

Seems that is not Firefox's fault, but the way the dialog (GTK2?) is
implemented.

[Bug 1075368] [NEW] Inconsistent bookmarking of mounted media or network shares Nautilus/GTK+

2012-11-05 Thread Dario Ruellan
Public bug reported:

Description:
Nautilus allows you to bookmark both mounted destinations and network shares.
Nautilus chooses a name based on the actual folder, but other dialogs, as the
file selector, shows the bookmark as a truncated path. Same result if you
rename the bookmark.

What I expect:
Consistent naming on both Nautilus and file selectors.

What I get:
Some times the bookmark honors the naming on Nautilus, sometimes get listed as
a path, and sometimes it is not listed at all.

To reproduce:
Open Nautilus and navigate to a shared network folder.
Bookmark the folder.
Open Gedit.
Select Open
The dialog shows the bookmark as a path instead of the name given on Nautilus.

GTK+2 seems to plain ignore this kind of bookmarks (as stated on bug
#1061600).
