[Bug 563251] Re: Gwibber replies to private messages publically

2010-05-02 Thread Dave Hall
Seeing this in 2.30.0.1 This is a big problem, it could cause a user to
get into real trouble if they didn't realise that their reply was
public. Here is an example:

DM from colleague in meeting: The boss is a such a
Public reply: @colleague boss is always a
Public reply from boss: @user come see me in my office
DM from colleague: ! you are so fired man. nice knowing you

Ooops!

[Bug 518029] Re: FFE Please update glusterfs to 3.0.2

2010-03-22 Thread Dave Hall
I have just realised that this isn't even on the Release Team's radar
for a FFE.

GlusterFS 2.0.x has some serious issues such as maxing out CPU in
certain (random yet reproducible) circumstances. The upgrade path from
2.0.x to 3.0.0 was a bit rough but it seems that most of the 3.0 issues
were resolved in 3.0.2.

Upstream has mostly dropped support 2.0.x and encourage all users with
bugs/issues to try 3.0.x. The referenced upstream bug report is one
example of this.

I think it would be a shame for Ubuntu to ship a broken version of
glusterfs in lucid, especially as it will be around for a long time.

As I noted in comment #11 the debs in Andres ppa worked ok when I tested
them.

Looks good here. I did my testing on a couple 256 slices from

to pass 35% with both nodes being hammered by bonnie++ at the same time.

Anything else I can do to help the process along?

I tried emailing an update to launchpad earlier today, but it failed.
Anyway, here it is.

I should have time later this week. I will just spin it up on VM and
give it a whirl with drupal's apache solr module (my target platform)
and see how it goes. Let me know what it is ready for testing.

Thanks for sorting this.

[Bug 321889] Re: Please merge solr 1.3.0+ds1-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2010-03-07 Thread Dave Hall
Solr 1.4 (1.4.0+ds1-1) is in debian unstable and testing.Ubuntu has
been shipping 1.2 since hardy. It would be nice to get a fresher
version of solr into Lucid. In addition to me not having to keep a copy
from debian squeeze in my private repo for the next 2 years, there are
some nice features in 1.4. I'd really like to take advantage of the
improved replication and distribution offered in 1.4.

Debian bug tracker suggests that there is no issues with the package
either, see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?src=solr Debian
bug 550694 is no longer relevant (see my comment on it - if it ever
shows up) Bug 538229 has been a problem since 1.2 in Debian (and most
likely the 1.2 debs in lucid).

More comments. Just looking at the ubuntu packaging, it looks like the

* The debian/{control,rules} changes to reenable building solr-jetty
aren't needed as Debian is now shipping a jetty version of solr - see
http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/solr-jetty

* It would appear that debian/patches/ubuntu_07_junit-ignore-online-

I used the debian unstable (or was it testing?) source and compiled it

It _should_ be possible to grab the binary packages linked from that
page for glusterfs-client, glusterfs-server and libglusterfs0 and
install them using the following commands sudo dpkg -i /path/to/my-
glusterfs-debs-from-debian/*.deb sudo apt-get install -f

[Bug 518029] Re: glusterfs 2.0.x max's out CPU

2010-02-13 Thread Dave Hall
3.0.2 was released recently which seemed to fix some major issues some
people have been experiencing. The relnotes are available at
http://ftp.gluster.com/pub/gluster/glusterfs/3.0/LATEST/GlusterFS_3.0.2_Release_Notes.pdf

More details on the issues closed in 3.0.2 can be found at
http://is.gd/8hUNy- (the full url is really long and ugly).

Based on a quick test here 3.0.2 works far better than 2.0.x ever did on
ubuntu 9.10 amd64 servers. We are running 3.0.0 in production with no
issues either.

Debian now has 3.0.2 in sid, so I think that is a good indicator of the
quality of the release.
http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=glusterfs

I really don't want to have to maintain my own packages for 2-3 years
because ubuntu ships a broken version in a LTS release.

[Bug 518029] [NEW] glusterfs 2.0.x max's out CPU

2010-02-06 Thread Dave Hall
Public bug reported:

I tried using the official glusterfs 2.0.2 debs on karmic and I even
packaged my own debs of 2.0.9 and found both versions max'd out CPU on
my machines - sometimes even with no load. Upstream suggested using
3.0.0, which I did and now gluster hums along, rarely hitting anything
above 10% CPU under load.

Given Lucid is a LTS release, I think that you should seriously consider
pulling in version 3.0.0 of glusterfs from Debian experimental, it far
more stable than 2.0.x.

[Bug 474660] Re: drbd8-utils not dependent on drbd8-source

2009-12-07 Thread Dave Hall
Given the karmic kernel ships with DRBD support, the dependency is wrong
- regardless of the plan.

DKMS is great for the desktop, but I really don't like having build-
essential installed on production net facing servers, and where possible
any productions servers.

I am guessing a fix for karmic is unlikely to happen given where things
are at in the lucid release cycle, but I would strongly recommend that
this is fixed properly (not using dkms) in lucid. As DRBD is useful in
server environments, I'd like to see it remain in the stock server
image.

As a work^Whack around I have created a meta package drbd8-source-hack
which provides drbd8-source, which is less than ideal but it works.

As someone who's only option for affordable broadband access is via

the same time for every ubuntu release since hardy has included a last

think it is worse to introduce another regression at the last minute
than ship a product with a relnoted known issue.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for working on this bug. I have tested the AMD64 kernel under
KVM and haven't seen the error messages.

I am not running any production VMs using karmic at this stage, so
simulating real load wasn't possible. I did run dd with it dumping 25G
to disk and so saw no errors. Before loading the test kernel the errors
were frequent every time there disk io.

Cheers

[Bug 153727] Re: Ethernet device's number increases by one after every reboot

2008-08-28 Thread Dave Hall
This is a bug in the Feisty kernel, and last time I checked the problem
was still there. The real fix is to fix the forcedeth driver in Feisty,
as based on what I have seen online this is an ubuntu only bug. If you
aren't going to fix Feisty then I suggest you close the bug as WONTFIX
and put a comment on it that it works with Hardy - I won't be upgrading
production boxes (other than my laptop) to Intrepid anytime soon.

2008-08-28 Thread Dave Hall
This was a bug in the Dapper kernels. Last time I checked it was still
a problem with the Dapper kernels. If a fix isn't going to be
backported to Dapper, then I think it should be closed as WONTFIX with
a note saying that a fix won't be backported to Dapper but it works in
later versions.

[Bug 206948] [NEW] phpGroupWare should be included in Hardy

2008-03-25 Thread Dave Hall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: phpgroupware

Release Information
$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu hardy (development branch)
Release:8.04

Package Version: none dropped from repos

What do you expect to happen
phpGroupWare be included in the Hardy release

What happened instead
phpGroupWare was dropped from Hardy after it was dropped from Debian
unstable/testing after the package maintainer (Andrew Mitchell) ignored
repeated attempts to contact him.

More info
phpGroupWare has since be reintroduced into Debian unstable, with a new
maintainer. Can it please be included in Hardy?

Discussion from #ubuntu-motu yesterday even AEDT

skwashd hi all
skwashd how do i find out why a motu maintained package was dropped from a
release?
soren skwashd: http://people.ubuntu.com/~ubuntu-archive/removals.txt
skwashd soren: thanks ... not the most user friendly list ... but hey it
works :)
skwashd soren: and now is too late to get it back in for hardy ... right?
soren skwashd: Depends.
skwashd it was dropped from debian after it was orphaned ... and so ubuntu
did the same (the maintainer - ajmitch is AWOL)
skwashd now it is in debian unstable again ... and the gutsy debs should
still work with hrady
skwashd either way i would like to see it make a come back in 1 form or
another
skwashd soren: which side of depends does this case fall :)
soren skwashd: File a feature freeze exception request along with a sync
request.
soren skwashd: If it's been in the archive before, I don't think it'll be a
problem, but it's not up to me.

[Bug 199388] [NEW] [Hardy alpha 6] Unable to create XFS filesystems

2008-03-06 Thread Dave Hall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

Version: 8.04 Server Alpha 6
Platform: AMD64
Version: not sure, what ever ships on the CD :)

What do you expect to happen:
Manually partition a disk and select the filesystem type as XFS

What happened instead:
Manually partition a disk and when creating a filesystem try to choose XFS,
find that it is not there. Start calling ubuntu devs names that would be in
breach of the CoC if reproduced here. Double check. Call devs more names.
Start downloading debian net installer ISO. File bug report on launchpad,
after spending 5 minutes trying to navigate it (yes I hate LP). Select FAT16
for all filesystems and move on ;)

When trying to install a new server, I can not select XFS as the
filesystem type in debian-installer, as it isn't there. I hope his is
someone pressing the wrong button at the wrong time, not a decision to
drop XFS support from d-i in ubuntu.

[Bug 153727] Re: Ethernet device's number increases by one after every reboot

2008-02-11 Thread Dave Hall
I don't think this will be fixed. If the MAC address is invalid, what
is the driver to do? Other things can break if the kernel driver
accepts the invalid data.

I have blogged about my experience and hack for it at
http://davehall.com.au/blog/dave/2008/02/10/flakey-bios-gigabyte-ga-
m68sm-s2l-makes-mac-address-change-reboot

I think that this really should be marked as a kernel bug, as it is
the kernel driver doing this, not udev. If only launchpad allowed you
to file hardware bugs and they were sent to the appropriate vendor ...

[Bug 116696] network manager ppp doesn't support gprs/umts data cards

2007-05-24 Thread Dave Hall
Public bug reported:

There are multiple problems with Network manager which make it unusable
for managing umts/gprs connections.

Unless a username and password are specified the connection can not be
saved. Not all gprs connections require a user/pass combo - see
http://www.taniwha.org.uk/gprs.html

There is no way to specify additional options for gprs such as APN

Network Manager doesn't detect a manually connected (such as sudo pon
provider) ppp connection, so any VPNs in network manager are not
available when using the connection.

Although this is really a wishlist, I think it is pretty important, as
it makes Network Manager not very useful when using ppp connection which
require extra options such as umts/gprs (and I suspect hsdpa).

[Bug 106094] ubuntu-xen-desktop name and description seem to conflict

2007-04-12 Thread Dave Hall
Public bug reported:

Foiund in: ubuntu-xen-desktop_0.0.1-2ubuntu3 from feisty

Sorry if I seem like an idiot, but this doesn't make sense to me.

The output of apt-cache show ubuntu-xen-desktop is:

quote
Package: ubuntu-xen-desktop
snip /
Description: Xen software for running on servers.
This package will install a suite of software for running Xen on servers.
 .
It is safe to remove this package once installed, the pacakges themself don't
 depend on it.
 .
This will install the i386 version, xen-tools and xenmann.
/quote

To me this seems like a contradiction. Is it for a server or a desktop?
If it is for the desktop the description needs to be updated. If it is
for a server, I think it is poorly named. Alternatively just rename
ubuntu-desktop to ubuntu-server for installing the ubuntu desktop to
stop any confusion ;)

I am sure I am not the only idiot out there scratching their head over
this one.

Someone (ajmitch) pointed out on IRC that the description for ubuntu-
xen-desktop-amd64 is even more confusing

[Bug 105768] help needs to be updated

2007-04-11 Thread Dave Hall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hwdb-client

Version: 0.6.9 (on feisty beta)

Steps to reproduce:
1 Start hwdb-gui (Applications - System Tools - Ubuntu Device Database)
2 Click help
3 Click Getting Started section
4 Follow instructions under section 2.2.2. From Device Manager where it says
Choose System → Administration → Device Manager
5 Look under System - Preferences and still not find Device Manager
6 Start looking through all the menu options for Device Manager
7 Get confused
8 Give up
9 Tell people ubuntu sucks ;)

Solution:
Change Choose System → Administration → Device Manager to Choose System →
Preferences → Hardware Information and avoid everything from step 5 onwards -
especially 8 and 9 :)

OT: Although I like the new menu item name, I think it should be under
Administration.

[Bug 62000] Re: No usable theme found for 1920x1200

2006-10-11 Thread Dave Hall
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 60621 ***

Sorry for being slack with a follow up. On my laptop this is fixed. I
was missing the usplash-theme-ubuntu package.

I wasn't sure if the comment should go here or on bug #60621. I posted
it here so there is some continuity.

Sorry for being slow to respond, I just double checked the dependencies
and don't know how I missed it first time around.

btw the 0.9.16.011 package has a nasty bug in it, I will file a new
report on it.

I think I might have found the cause of the problem on my install. Some
how I had managed to uninstall the ubuntu-desktop meta package which has

I will try to find some time tomorrow to reboot and test

[Bug 61783] package should depend on php5-imap | php4-imap

2006-09-21 Thread Dave Hall
Public bug reported:

The summary really explains it. We get a lot people having problems
with this app as they don't have php-imap installed. Adding it to
dependencies should stop unnecessary bug reports for you to handle :)

I only checked this in edgy, it would be nice if it made its way into a
dapper update, but it isn't essential

[Bug 58915] Re: Python upgrade errors

2006-09-16 Thread Dave Hall
Same here. I have been running edgy for since late July. I tried to
install scribus-ng which depends on python2.3 and the python2.3 package
is broken, as above.

It can't be removed/purged even using dpkg. Here is what i get when
trying to remove it.

[Bug 56450] Re: keytouch kills gnome session on startup

2006-08-27 Thread Dave Hall
Hi Marvin,

I gave up on keytouch for various reasons, the main 2 were the lack of
acknowledgment on the bug report and my inability to get my Logitech MX
3000 working with it or the editor.

I will reinstall it in the next week or so when I have some time to
play.

Cheers

Dave

[Bug 56450] keytouch kills gnome session on startup

2006-08-15 Thread Dave Hall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: keytouch

I didn't write down the whole message but after logging my gnome session
crashed with a message about an unexpected in /etc/X11/Xsession.d
/39keytouch-acpid (or similar)

the file contains the following:
if [ ! `ps -A | grep keytouch-acpid -m 1 -o` ]; then (keytouch-acpid
/dev/null); fi

I changed it to:
if [ ! `ps -A | grep keytouch-acpid -m 1 -o` ]; then (keytouch-acpid
/dev/null); fi

and it now seems to work. Pretty simple fix, but not something a new
user should have to deal with - especially the way my console looks atm
(but that is another bug report)

[Bug 45928] Re: High error rate on UMTS modem

2006-07-23 Thread Dave Hall
What are the chances of getting the fix linked from bug #42578
backported, given that a full backport of a new kernel has been ruled
out?

I tried doing it myself but there were too many conflicts for a C n00b
like myself to be able to deal with.
