[Bug 96700] Re: neon-config --la-file points to non-existent file

Good grief! I don't care nearly enough anymore to try and build svn from
source. It's been 4 years! I've moved to other stuff.

Have a nice day.

[Bug 322909] Re: future gnome-volume-control has many use case regressions with move to Pulse Audio

2009-10-26 Thread David Allouche
With a ThinkPad X60, to avoid distortion when the Master volume is at
100% the PCM volume must be at most 68% (-3dB), otherwise clipping
occurs. Historically, I always lowered the PCM to this level. The effect
is manifest using the Multimedia Systems Selector output test to produce
a sine wave, that makes clipping obvious.

With the new gnome-volume-control in Karmic, that means that clipping
occurs way before 100% (68%, I guess), which makes the system sound like
shit.

Editing /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-
output.conf.common, section [Element PCM], to change volume = merge to
volume = ignore works around the issue.

Thanks a lot Daniel for the hint. Otherwise I would have had to remain
on Jaunty.

[Bug 138006] Re: Memory leak in Run Application dialog

2009-04-23 Thread David Allouche
I am the original bug reporter. I cannot reproduce the leak on Jaunty
(gnome-panel 1:2.26.0-0ubuntu7).

There is no clear relation between this bug and the linked upstream bug.
The upstream bug reports a number of leaks detected with valgrind,
without explaining what user actions produced it. Examination of the
valgrind stack traces in the upstream bug report does not suggest that
the run dialog was involved (disclaimer: I am not familiar with this
code, I am just using programmer common sense applied to the function
names present in the stack traces).

This bug should be unlinked from gnome-bugs #475476 and closed
immediately.

[Bug 339081] [NEW] Disable hinting with luxi fonts

2009-03-07 Thread David Allouche
Public bug reported:

The Luxi fonts look great when unhinted, but they are just ugly when
hinted. Maybe there is no hinting data in the font itself and freetype
has to do auto-hinting, I do not know.

Since Luxi does not take well to hinting, hinting should be disabled.

In any case, Firefox 3.1 beta 2 from upstream binary tarball appears to
ignore the GNOME hinting settings, the only way I found to get good
looking Luxi fonts in Firefox was to disable the hinting using
fontconfig.

Fontconfig file attached (drop in /etc/fonts/config.d).

[Bug 303348] Re: Ant Dependency on OpenJDK-6-jre

2008-11-29 Thread David Allouche
ant 1.7.1-0ubuntu1 has a recommend dependency on default-jdk | java-
compiler | java-sdk.

With the new policy in 8.10 of installing recommends by default, that
might cause the installation of openjdk-6-jre even when another JRE is
already installed. Or maybe the previously installed jre package did not
provide java-sdk.

Which JRE package did you have installed before installing ant?

[Bug 96700] Re: neon-config --la-file points to non-existent file

2008-10-19 Thread David Allouche
Catone, thanks for submitting a patch, but I think it is a bad solution,
for at least two reasons.

First, it's an Ubuntu-specific hack as a conditional. I think it
unlikely to be merged upstream. If it's not going to be merged upstream,
we do not need the conditional.

If we remove the conditional, the second problem becomes apparent. This
patch makes neon-config lie. When provided the --la-file option, that
would print the location of a .so file.

There are really only two sensible ways to go forward:

 1. Include the .la file in the Ubuntu package of libneon. Why is it
even removed in the first place?

 2. Trick question. There's actually only sensible solution that will
fix the cannot build upstream tarballs.

[Bug 138006] Re: Memory leak in Run Application dialog

Assistive Technology seems to play a large part in the problem.

Initially, I had it enabled, and observed 1MB leak (with the letter

Then I disabled it ( opening

again.

[Bug 138006] Memory leak in Run Application dialog

2007-09-07 Thread David Allouche
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

There seems to be a memory leak in the completion feature of the Run
Application dialog.

Steps to reproduce:
 * Start top or the System Monitor to monitor the memory usage of the
gnome-panel process in real time.
 * Open the Run Application dialog
 * Type a letter, (g for example).
 * Wait a few seconds, memory usage goes up a bit (up to 1MB here)
 * Press backspace, wait a few seconds, memory usage goes up again.
 * Rinse, repeat.
 * Close the Run Application dialog, the memory is not released.

In a long-running session (several days), if the user regularly uses the
Run Application dialog, that can cause gnome-panel to bloat up to
several hundreds MB.

[Bug 95932] vegastrike-data python files are not pep0263 compliant and fail with python2.5

2007-03-25 Thread David Allouche

In Ubuntu Feisty, the default Python version is 2.5, and vegastrike is
compiled with this version. However, some of its data files use non-
ascii encodings without being pep0263 compliant.

http://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0263/

that need them.

2007-03-25 Thread David Allouche
here comes another debdiff that does not include the ~ddaa1 in the
package version, so it's entirely brainless to apply.

[Bug 85935] Re: quickcam with kernel 2.6.17-11

2007-02-17 Thread David Allouche
Okay, that's a bit elliptic. I helped Martin debug a problem with his
Quickcam Messenger:

He installed the kernel module following the instructions on this page:
http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/quickcam And got the quickcam working well.

Then he installed a system upgrade (presumably the kernel upgrade to
2.6.17-11). After the upgrade, he needed to run the quickcam.sh script
after each reboot to create the /dev/video* devices.

Using the (previously installed) 2.6.17-11 kernel, the quickam module
was loaded without problem.

Observed behaviour: after upgrading to the 2.6.17-11 kernel, running
camorama from camorama-0.18ubuntu1 produces the following error message
could not connect to video device (/dev/video0) please check
connection. Then running the quickcam.sh script from
http://home.mag.cx/messenger/source/qc-usb-messenger-1.6.tar.gz created
the /dev/video* devices and allowed camorama to run successfully.

Expected behaviour: installing a new kernel as proposed by the automatic
upgrade applet should not cause previously working device to regress.

Erratum:

 loaded without problem.
Should be:
Using the (previously installed) 2.6.17-10 kernel, the quickcam module was
 loaded without problem.

Added clarification: with 2.6.17-11, /dev/video* do not exist even if
quickcam appears loaded in the output of lsmod.
