[Bug 1509334] Re: KDE/Plasma very slow to launch (Kubuntu 15.10)

2015-10-26 Thread David Edmundson
Please see https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=354230 upstream.

Is fixed for 5.4.3.

I would suggest backporting that specific patch listed in the final
comment.

[Bug 1459262] [NEW] QT_PLUGIN_PATH ignored on Ubuntu builds

2015-05-27 Thread David Edmundson
Public bug reported:

Code in qtbase effectively says

if (plugin dir is explicitly set)
  use explicitly set directory
else
look in QT_PLUGIN_PATH then default place

Debian packages explicitly set the plugin directory to be the default.
This doesn't have any benefit, but makes it a lot harder for developers as this
env variable no longer works.

Removing -plugindir from the ./configure lines in rules fixes this.

[Bug 1313611] Re: [MRE] Please update meta-kde-telepathy to 0.8.1

2014-05-02 Thread David Edmundson
OK. What changed in kde-telepathy to cause that?

We changed KTp to load contacts in the constructor

We changed libkpeople to handle loading contacts being pre-loaded

e6114f0757d57e57d0f474d936ff63d7d1b1ccbd in libkpeople

One without the other screws up

Yes, it was an oversight on our part to introduce what turns out to be a
behavioural change; but as long as distros do the right thing it
shouldn't be a problem.

It was part of a bigger fix to work round broken Akonadi's. We heavily
tested the stable branches, but not every combo of the stable branches.

[Bug 1069183] Re: LightDM KDE Greeter loads the desktop half a minute after login

2012-10-20 Thread David Edmundson
Thanks for all the detailed logs.
There's definitely something weird going on.

Between auth complete and login the following happens:
  - There's an animation
  - We take a snapshot of the screen, and run an app to set the X root
background image
  - We start the session

The delay is almost certainly something going wrong in this second
stage. It's a bit of a hack that all display managers do to solve a
black flicker between login and ksplash starting.

I don't see how the choice of background could make a difference as it's
sending a screenshot of the screen to lightdm-kde-greeter-rootimage, I
don't see how what's in the image could make a difference.

Could you set the background image again, and see if it's reproducible?
Do you get the delay with a different background file?

[Bug 1069183] Re: LightDM KDE Greeter loads the desktop half a minute after login

2012-10-20 Thread David Edmundson
That should be everything I need to test this.

I suspect a one line change (to turn off smooth scaling on the
background image) will fix everything. I now have the images and can
test. Alternately I could maybe cache a scaled png version. I'll see how
well this first fix works.

Actually when I first went through benchmarking LightDM having a JPEG
background (1920x1280) caused the processor to spend as much time
decoding the JPEG as it did doing everything else. (JPEG can have up to
~6000 CPU calculations for each block of 8x8 pixels. My day-job is about
image compression, I could go on for hours) . It'l be slowing down your
load time too.

Thanks again for the extensive investigation.

I've just discussed with my team hiding the applet if you have no

bash: line 1: gconftool-2: command not found

 1) This a packaging bug in lightdm, it should depend on gconftool-2 if it uses
it.
 2) wrong anyway. The lightDM guest-account-add script should not be doing
Gnome specific things.
 3) we need a way to add the same, but KDE specific stuff, namely:
Disable nepomuk (initial table creation takes a long time, and all data is
discarded anyway, Vishesh agreed on this)
Disable the screen lock (as if it does lock, the user is locked out
completely)
Disable jockey, software update et-al that need root access.

I'm pretty sure they'll be (equally) upset if we just add KDE code into
this script, so we need to talk to upstream about a good universal way
to do this, maybe loading a specific script based on the session name.

[Bug 951104] Re: kde-telepathy-text-ui hijacks Empathy in Unity

2012-07-04 Thread David Edmundson
This is not a bug in KDE Telepathy rather the opposite.

All telepathy clients are dbus activated, so dbus just chooses whatever
app can handle it (in this case, showing a text chat)

In telepathy whoever is launching a channel can provide a preferredHandler
and give the name of the handler.
Unity clearly isn't giving one, (empathy) so dbus loads something at random.
Setting a prerfferedHandler on ensure_channel will solve this.

[Bug 939126] Re: AppArmor profile does not allow creating of ~/.cache/dconf

2012-03-02 Thread David Edmundson
We see it all the time in KDE Telepathy with users who only have
telepathy as the app that uses libdconf.

Telepathy gabble quits with:
unable to create '/home/username/.cache/dconf'; dconf will not work properly
The issue is in dconf_shmdir_from_environment() in libdconf.

It doesn't seem to affect Gnome users very much as some other app will
have created this directory first.

I did miss a step in my instructions:
make sure you disconnect any jabber accounts (as otherwise telepathy-gabble
will automatically spawn after you kill it, before launching by hand)
connect the jabber account after launching telepathy-gabble manually, this is
when the error occurs.

I'm using Oeneric, but I think this still happens in precise as it was
brought up on the kubuntu-devel ML when talking about telepathy.

[Bug 939126] [NEW] AppArmor profile does not allow creating of ~/.cache/dconf

2012-02-22 Thread David Edmundson
Public bug reported:

This causes telepathy-gabble (and other CMs) to throw a critical_error
when creating this directory if it does not exist already.

To reproduce:
 delete ~/.cache/dconf

killall telepathy-gabble
start GABBLE_PERSIST=1 GABBLE_DEBUG=all /usr/lib/telepathy/telepathy-gabble

this will error when the first account is connected.

To clarify Alex's comment.

This is a KDE bug not a LightDM one. It has been fixed in the very
latest versions of KDE. These versions have not reached Kubuntu yet.

[Bug 139186] Re: kde4 beta2 kmail ( and others ) fail

2010-02-15 Thread David Edmundson
Oszkar: Everyone else's comments were back in 2008, when KDE4.1 came
out.

Your issue is a missing library that ksysguardwidgets wants. Presumably a
change to Qt4.5
I have QtCreator working fine in KDE 4.4. Make sure you have absolutely
everything up to date.

[Bug 184544] Re: apt kio-slave missing in konqueror-kde4

2009-06-09 Thread David Edmundson
I thought I should update this - this came up in KDE brainstorm, and now
I have packagekit for Jaunty I remembered that I promised to do this, so
finally got round to writing it.

See:
http://www.sharpley.org.uk/page/software/packagekio
or
http://forum.kde.org/kio-package-search-t-39550.html

This handles listing all packages installed via package:/ and contents of a
package with package:/packagename
 (i.e package:/amarok)

Calling it with apt:/ instead of package:/ is simply a case of changing
the relevant line in the .desktop file.

It does not currently handle installing files ala the firefox apt:/
I'm not sure how to do that without conflicting with listing installed
files, without it getting very confusing for the user.

[Bug 360319] Re: [GM45] (Needs -intel 2.7.0) memory leak causes system to run out of memory (UXA/EXA)

2009-05-07 Thread David Edmundson
This certainly seemed to considerably reduce any memory leak. I had my
computer on for 5 hours and Xorg only crept up to 5% (~100Mb) RAM usage.
Under EXA I would have had to restart X by now. Unfortunately my
computer freezes on starting X more than half the time under UXA.

2009-05-07 Thread David Edmundson
KDE4.2.2 in my case. I can try a different window manager and maybe not
plasma to see if that makes a difference.

Are the people reporting leaks here running GNOME or KDE?

[Bug 303610] Re: file move causes data loss if interrupted due to system crash

2008-12-01 Thread David Edmundson
Expected behaviour may be pushing it a bit, but you would experience
exactly the same thing on a Windows or Mac OS machine if you had a crash
whilst writing. The drive needs to be unmounted or Safely removed(to
use Windows terminology) in order to force it to flush the data. Using a
non-native file system wouldn't have helped matters either.

Moving forward:
Ideally use ext3 as your file system, or fat32 if you want Windows
compatability.
Install the package kerneloops This will help provide debug information to
help developers fix the crash.
Try and remember launchpad is for developers to discuss solutions not for
throwing a hissy fit on the internet/digg.

I hope you recovered all your files successfully.

2008-10-21 Thread David Edmundson
If no-one else is working on this I'd be up for doing this, I'd be happy
to do the port. I've done some hacking on KIOs before.

Ideally a new version should be URL compatiable with the Ubuntu Firefox
extension for installing packages via URLs pointing to apt:/xyz

[Bug 222344] Re: dragon player cannot play my DVD-iso's or avi's

2008-06-27 Thread David Edmundson
Dragonplayer cannot play DVD ISOs right now. It is a known issue.

As for the Avi files, I imagine you do not have the codecs installed. VLC uses
a different set of codec libraries to xine (the engine dragonplayer is using)
Try installing: libxine1-all-plugins
either through synaptic/adept, or by typing
sudo apt-get install libxine1-all-plugins
