[Bug 1799475] [NEW] no error message from sha1sum -c if given a different checksum

2018-10-23 Thread David Pottage
Public bug reported:

I made a mistake when invoking sha1sum -c where I accidentally passed in
a sha256 checksum. It did not report any error message to me instead it
waited for input without alerting me to the problem.

Steps to reproduce:

Run "sha1sum -c" without any additional args in a terminal window. (So
it reads checksums and filenames from stdin).

Paste into the terminal a valid SHA256 checksum and a filename that is
present.

expected: Error message "sha1sum: 'standard input': no properly
formatted SHA1 checksum lines found"

actual: No output.

Seen in Ubuntu 18.04

[Bug 1425972] [NEW] Links from thunderbird email do not work

2015-02-26 Thread David Pottage
Public bug reported:

When I click a link from an email it does not work any more.

Instead of opening the link in a new tab, Firefox opens a new empty
window and does not follow the link.

If I change the default browser for my desktop from Firefox to Chrome,
then Chrome can open the link fine.

I have started seeing this today since firefox was upgraded from v35 to
36.

My email client is Mozilla thunderbird at the latest stable version.

[Bug 1393899] [NEW] LVM devices not created during boot

2014-11-18 Thread David Pottage
Public bug reported:

During bootup, I get errors to say that the kernal cannot mount the
filesystems that are on an LVM. When I choose M for manual recovery,
it shows that no LVM devices have been created under /dev/mapper/* or
/dev/dm-*

It is easy to fix, and resume the boot by running vgchange -v -a y but
it is annoying that the system will not boot without manual
intervention, and if it happened to a less knowlegable user they would
be stuck.

On my system the root, and other volumes necessary for the system to run
are setup as normal partions on a small ssd. I have a large hard disc
setup as an LVM phisycal volume that contains logical volumes for media
files and the like that are not necesary for boot or basic system
operation, but are wanted for deskop usage.

[Bug 1055658] Re: Under load, libvirt fails to start VMs concurrently

2012-11-30 Thread David Pottage
I have tested the patch on a KVM cluster at my emplyer and based on a
day or so of testing under heavy load, it fixes the bug for me.

The cluster consists of 7 machines each running up to 8 VM jobs in
parallel. Most are varous windows versions but some are Ubuntu Lucid.
Each job runs for arround 2 minutes, before being killed and a fresh VM
booted in it's place, so we have thousands of KVM invocations per day.

Before we saw arround 5% of jobs would fail due to Libvirt errors.
(mostly from get_domain_by_name from the perl bindings) This was reduced
to 1.5% by making multiple retrys on the API call untill it worked. It
now looks like the faliure rate is down to zero with the new version of
libvirt.

Thank you.

[Bug 769866] Re: tab completion no longer escapes filenames

2011-05-18 Thread David Pottage
I have both an Ubuntu Natty and a Debian Squeese boxes here. Under
Debian that config it a bit different. It used default for some
commands, and filenames for others.

Debian:
for i in a2ps autoconf automake bc gprof ld nm objcopy objdump readelf strip \
bison colordiff diff patch enscript cp df dir du ln ls mkfifo mknod mv rm \
touch vdir awk gperf grep grub indent less m4 sed shar date \
tee who texindex cat csplit cut expand fmt fold head \
md5sum nl od paste pr ptx sha1sum sort split tac tail tr unexpand \
uniq wc ldd bash id irb mkdir rmdir wget curl; do
have $i complete -F _longopt -o filenames $i
done

# These commands do not use filenames, so '-o filenames' is not needed.
for i in env netstat seq uname units; do
have $i complete -F _longopt -o default $i
done
unset i

Ubuntu Natty:
for i in a2ps awk bash bc bison cat colordiff cp csplit \
curl cut date df diff dir du enscript env expand fmt fold gperf gprof \
grep grub head indent irb ld ldd less ln ls m4 md5sum mkdir mkfifo mknod \
mv netstat nl nm objcopy objdump od paste patch pr ptx readelf rm rmdir \
sed seq sha{,1,224,256,384,512}sum shar sort split strip tac tail tee \
texindex touch tr uname unexpand uniq units vdir wc wget who; do
have $i complete -F _longopt -o default $i
done
unset i

It looks to me as if the Debian config does different things depending
on which command is run, while in Ubutu someone tried to merge the two
command blocks but got the settings wrong.

[Bug 769631] [NEW] does not work after natty upgrade, shows kernels from prevous version

2011-04-23 Thread David Pottage
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Natty, I have found that startupmanager does not
work.

When it is started, it offers a list of kernels and other operating
systems as normal, but they are the kernels from my prevous ubuntu

startup it makes no difference to the boot process.

[Bug 734325] Re: Natty: Users should be able to easily turn off (disable) global menu

2011-04-15 Thread David Pottage
I agree with Roger Binns. This bug is not invalid.

Like him I have my desktop spread across multiple monitors, and on that
setup, a global menu would be a user interface disaster. It is a long
way to move the mouse pointer from the window I am working in to the top
of the screen. Global menus might make sense in the case of a single,
fairly small screen (eg a netbook), but in the case of a power user with
multiple large screens it is not a workable solution.

At this point in the Ubuntu release cycle, I would normally be running
the beta on a spare laptop, and looking forward to upgrading on final
release day in a few weeks time. Instead I am thinking about switching
to Debian.

[Bug 658501] [NEW] After upgrading svnadmin gives Expected repository format '3' or '5'; found format '4'. My SVN repository is broken

2010-10-11 Thread David Pottage
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: subversion

Before upgrading to maverick my SVN repository worked fine. It was
served to users over the apache2 dav-svn module.

Since I have upgraded the repository does not work. My Apache2 error log
contains:

[Mon Oct 11 16:52:14 2010] [error] [client 87.194.166.225] (20014)Internal
error: Berkeley DB error for filesystem '/var/lib/svn/repository/db' while
opening environment:\n
[Mon Oct 11 16:52:14 2010] [error] [client 87.194.166.225] Could not fetch
resource information. [500, #0]
[Mon Oct 11 16:52:14 2010] [error] [client 87.194.166.225] Could not open the

[Mon Oct 11 16:52:14 2010] [error] [client 87.194.166.225] Could not open the
requested SVN filesystem [500, #160029]

I tried running svnadmin recover:

# svnadmin verify /var/lib/svn/repository/db
svnadmin: Expected repository format '3' or '5'; found format '4'

It looks like the berkley DB version has been upgraded, without a way to
upgrade existing databases.

Mine is a small repository, and I have a set of checkin dumps for
everything in the repository, so I could just create a new repository,
and load the checkin dumps to recreate my SVN database, but that is
hardly a nice solution.

[Bug 611619] [NEW] Xorg crash when viewing a large PNG file in firefox

2010-07-30 Thread David Pottage
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When viewing this PNG file in firefox:

http://www.lightbluetouchpaper.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/pspvc2.png
Or the page it is linked from:
http://www.lightbluetouchpaper.org/2010/07/28/passwords-in-the-wild-part-ii-failures-in-the-market/
(Which appears to have the same image embedded but not scaled) firefox triggers
an X-server crash.

I don't get the crash if I run firefox in safe mode, or use Google
Chrome instead.

I still get the crash if I run firefox with the --no-xshm option
enabled.

These lines appear in dmesg after the crash:

[Bug 584002] [NEW] Suspend/Resume worked in Ubuntu 9.04, now does not

2010-05-21 Thread David Pottage
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pm-utils

I own an Asus A6ja laptop. Suspend and resume used to work, now it does
not.

As part my testing of the Ubuntu 9.04 beta, I ran the automated testing
scripts:

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel-
announce/2009-March/000556.html

Back then, the tests passed on my laptop, and I entered a report to say
that they did.

I recently ran the same tests. None of them work any more.

[Bug 454941] Re: thinks that package information is 8 days old even after updating an hour ago (aptitude does not write update-stamp)

2010-03-14 Thread David Pottage
I am also seeing this issue in Lucid Lynx (Alpha 3) in a Virtual Box VM.

Could it be significant that my update system is:

aptitude update
aptitude -d -y dist-upgrade

Then run update-manager via the GUI to actually install the packages
that the command lines above?

Perhaps aptitude is not setting the flag because it did not actually
install anything.

[Bug 222626] Re: ext3 partitions on external usb drives can only be written to by root

2009-12-28 Thread David Pottage
This looks to be the same problem as bug #121900

I would say it is a bug, and that it is incorect for the system to
enforce the mandatory access control. The user has physical posseson of
the USB drive, and even if he does not have root on the current ubuntu
system, he could easily put it in another system that he does have root
on, such as a live CD.

Therefore enforcing the access controls does not create any security, it
just annoys and inconveniences the user.

[Bug 408077] [NEW] nvida Xorg binary drivers conflict with oss ati driver

2009-08-02 Thread David Pottage
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

I think there is some sort of undocumented conflict between the ati
driver above, and the closed source nvidia drivers. My current version
is 1:6.12.1-0ubuntu2

My system previously had an nVidia 9600 graphics card in it when I
installed Ubuntu Januty. Today I replaced that card with an ATI x1650
graphics card. I expected it all to 'just work' (I have a laptop with
ATI x1600 and the accelarated 3D graphics work very nicely).

Instead I did not get any working 3D at all. glxinfo reported that 3D
was not supported. Even explicity adding Driver ati to the xorg.conf
file did not make it work.

I logged in via ssh as root and stopped gdm, then ran startx so that I could
see the messages go by. This is what I got.

[Bug 408077] Re: nvida Xorg binary drivers conflict with oss ati driver

2009-08-02 Thread David Pottage
I know that the nvidia GL libaries conflict with the system ones.

My point is, that the power of the debian packaging system should sort
that out for me automatically by having an explicit conflict set so that
when I install the ATI driver the nvida one is automatically purged.
That is how conficts are supposed to work in debian packaging.

What I don't want to do is spend an hour investigating when it could be
done automatically, and I don't want the next person who swaps out an
nvida card for an ATI one to go through the same pain either.

[Bug 219353] Re: compiz corruption upon resume

2009-04-24 Thread David Pottage
I don't think this is fglrx specific.

I saw the same trouble using xserver-xorg-video-ati (the open source
driver). My bug report (Bug #272566) was marked as a duplicate of this
bug.

[Bug 319340] [NEW] Wireless applet connection disappears after first system update

2009-01-20 Thread David Pottage
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Januty Alpha 3 Desktop i386

Asus A6Ja laptop. (intel chipset)

When I booted the system from the live CD, the wireless applet appeared
on the task bar, and allowed me to easily connect my WiFi router.

I installed Ubuntu into a spare partition, when I rebooted, Wireless
also worked. I then started the update manager. It updated about 60
packages. After the reboot the WiFi applet disappeared, and I could not
get it to re-appear.

Is there a log file somewhere that I can look at to get a list of what
the update replaced?

[Bug 291767] [NEW] libmime-lite-perl got removed during upgrade to Intrepid due to conflicts

2008-10-31 Thread David Pottage
Public bug reported:

The above package got removed when I upgraded my Ubuntu 8.4 system to
8.10.

When I try to re-install it, I get:

The following NEW packages will be installed:
  libemail-date-format-perl{a} libmime-lite-perl libmime-types-perl{a}
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  compiz-core{u} compiz-plugins{u} compizconfig-backend-kconfig{u}
libdecoration0{u} openssh-blacklist{u}
0 packages upgraded, 3 newly installed, 5 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

I need libmime-lite-perl to run a script on my server. I need the other
packages as well.

There should not be any conficts between those packages, especaaly with
openssh-blacklist, as they are both platform neutral pure perl.

[Bug 262403] Re: [intrepid] System fails to start with linux 2.6.27.1.1

2008-10-09 Thread David Pottage
I doubt it is related to bug 263059.

From reading through the comments on that bug people are having
intermittent start-up problems on all the 2.6.2.* kernel packages. I
only ever had trouble with the 2.6.27.1 kernel package, and that went
away when I upgraded a bunch of other stuff.

2008-09-21 Thread David Pottage
Thanks for you tip Mackenzie.

It is the window shaddow being miss-drawn. Also it only appears after
resuming from suspend, not from a cold boot.

I have tried testing other 3D applications and not seen any similar
artifacts.

Sorry I should have said.

I am running intrepid, and am using the latest versions currently
available in that branch. A quick search on packages.ubuntu.com, show
the current version numbers are:

Package compiz
  1:0.7.7+git20080807-0ubuntu10

Package xserver-xorg-video-ati
  1:6.9.0+git20080826.a3cc1d7a-2ubuntu2: amd64 i386

[Bug 262403] Re: [intrepid] System fails to start with linux 2.6.27.1.1

2008-09-02 Thread David Pottage
Bug has gone away.

I did a dist-upgrade last night on my laptop, and it updated a big list
of things, including the kernel to 2.6.27.2 (package linux-
image-2.6.27-2-generic). When I rebooted with this new kernel everything
worked.

To confirm if it was the old kernel that was at fault, I rebooted with
the offending 2.6.27.1.1 kernel. That worked as well, and I have no idea
why. My first thought was that there was some other, non kernel package
at fault, but if that was the case, then why did the 2.6.26-5 kernel
boot OK.

Perhaps the 2.6.27.* series of kernels had a dependency on another
package (udev or suchlike?) that was broken for a time, but the 2.6.26.*
kernel did not have that dependency so was unaffected.

Anyway, you should probably mark this bug as invalid or suchlike, seeing
as I am no longer able to reproduce this.
