[Bug 729307] Re: YouTube videos play red
Niklas, understand your frustration, with you all the way. I was getting essentially the same behaviour as you before I found the forums thread and the hardware accesssory workaround. Ie the first video worked, subsequent ones were red/magenta/yellow. The quick and nasty solution for me was just to flick up to the menu bar, hit tools, clear recent history, and then watch the next video. That said, I've got noscript, request policy and better privacy on board, and at least one of those is integrated into the clear cookies menu (I think probably better privacy). This really is crap. Ubuntu users have to make a choice between basic hardware functionality and security now? For a really simple workaround (which assumes you previously installed 2.6.31-18 from proposed, and that may leave you insecure), hold down shift as you boot so that the grub menu displays, then click down to the previously installed 2.6.31-18 using the down arrow, and press enter. It'll take a little extra time to boot, but you should then be up and running on 2.6.31.18 and both the camera and usb port should work. -- regression: uvcvideo module makes cannot reset port error on usb with bison webcam (5986:0203): USB and suspend fails https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/435352 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Michael, Jojo, Allessio. Try having a look at Bug #435352. The fix for the webcam/usb port issue there was distinct from the bios update here. The fix was released into the proposed repository a week or so ago. I got it from there, it works well. I'm not sure it's in the standard update repositories yet. Beni - Bug 435352 might be worth a read. To get the USB ports working you can : 1. Rebuild your kernel as outlined at Bug #435352 2. Turn off the camera with the Fn F6 keys at the login screen (you only need to do it once). 3. Disable uvcvideo as described at comment #157 above. [Bug 415023] Re: brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100
ozzyboy, have you tried disabling kernel mode setting in grub? That seems to be the preferred workaround in the release notes. Assuming you have grub 2 (check synaptic - it'll be listed as 1.97 or something like that) - sudo gedit /etc/default/grub type your password add nomodeset within the quotes at the end of the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX line. save close gedit sudo update-grub and you should be right. However, the screen might still flicker when you use the Fn F* keys to change brightness. I find the best workaround for that is to add the brightness panel applet by right clicking on your top panel, clicking add to panel, then adding the brightness applet. Then use the applet to change brightness, not the Fn F* keys. If you still having problems with suspend, it may be do with bug 435352. -- brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/415023 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kdebase-workspace in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
[Bug 415023] Re: brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100
ozzyboy, just reread your comment at 152. Some of your problems are definitely to do with bug 435352. The problem there is that the video camera drivers seem to have some kind of conflict with the usb drivers. There's no ideal solution, but as a workaround you can rebuild your kernel with some changes (there are some hard to follow instructions at 435352). Or, if you don't need the camera, you can just disable it either by turning it off with Fn F6 or by doing the following: sudo gedit /etc/modprode.d/blacklist.conf enter password add blacklist uvcvideo to an empty line (maybe add a #blacklisting uvcvideo to enable usb ports line as well so you remember what you've done) save close gedit restart And you should have your usb ports but not your camera. -- brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/415023 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Sorry then ozzyboy, I can offer no more. Except maybe the fact that just about any right click or menu click after boot will stop the flashing. Building a modified kernel will get you up on both cam and ports, but I think it will almost certainly have a performance impact. My take on the mod being trialled at 435352 is that it significantly slows responses to URBs and in turn that'll slow anything USB related. But I'm not sure of that. This is a truly crappy workaround, but depending on how desperate you are, you may want to use it. Make sure Fn F6 is switched to webcam on. (The only indicator of that on my u100 is that with most starts, USB won't work). Make sure you haven't blacklisted uvcvideo. Restart over and over until you get lucky and the webcam works. Oops. Attachment added early. I've got a bit of an interesting take on the idea that things changed after yesterday's updates. Without the blacklist entry, I'm getting about a 20% success rate for the camera and the usb ports. That's better than before. [Bug 435352] Re: regression: uvcvideo module makes cannot reset port error on usb with bison webcam (5986:0203): USB and suspend fails
Thanks Peter, your comments (both here and on your site) were really helpful in getting an Ubuntu Netbook Remix live session up and running on my MSI Wind U100. Some notes on my experience. 1. Very occasionally, booting to a UNR live session works with the webcam on. When it does, both the webcam and the usb ports work. I can access a flash drive and use Cheese. 2. But, usually, if the webcam has been left on, or has been turned on at the boot splash screen, I cannot boot to a live session. I get endlessly scrolling error messages during the boot process. 3. Disabling the webcam with the Fn F6 key at the boot splash screen is persistent. Once it's off, it stays off after shutdown and restart. Thus it only needs to be turned off once. 4. If the webcam has been turned off via Fn F6, I can consistently boot to a live session. 5. USB ports work during a live session with the webcam off. 6. Suspend works with the webcam off, both via closing up the machine and hitting Fn F12. 7. Screen brightness issues seem to be inconsistent and intermittent in live sessions with cam on, live sessions with cam off, and in my installation of Karmic. Sometimes the screen is flickering after boot, sometimes it isn't. Right clicking gets rid of it if it is. [Bug 415023] Re: brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100
Shannon #103. This is not the workaround offered in the release notes. But I'm a relative newcomer to Ubuntu, I have virtually no linux skills, and it works well for me: 1. Add the brightness applet to the top panel. 2. Each time you boot, wait until the desktop is fully up (panel icons included) then right click with the mouse button for two or three seconds. This will stop the flashing, and after a few seconds the on screen brightness indicator will disappear. This process adds just a few seconds to boot time, and seems like nothing more than a minor quirk. Your friend may create a new folder through doing this. Just have him or her highlight and delete. 3. If your friend needs to change the screen brightness, have him or her do it by clicking on the brightness applet, and sliding the slider. They should not use the Fn F7/F8 keys. Usually this will just change the brightness, with no resulting flashing. Very occasionally, there is flashing after changing the brightness via the applet. Again, right clicking with the mouse button (as in 2.) will make it stop. And that's it. It's certainly not a permanent solution, it's a bit quick and nasty and your friend will need to do it every boot. But it doesn't involve any code, and I'm more than content with it. It just seems like boot, press mouse button, problem gone for this session. (As an afterthought, some people seem to be having problems with the flashing after resuming from suspend. I'm not having those problems so I can't comment on whether this fixes that.) -- brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/415023 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kdebase-workspace in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

Hope it works for others. :) -- brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/415023 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 453714] [NEW] ubuntu karmic beta usb storage devices not recognised automatically
Public bug reported: Using an MSI Wind U100 with Ubuntu Karmic (Development Branch), updated to 16 Oct 2009. Problem is that USB storage devices are not recognised. Primary problem is with a Kingston Data Traveller 8GB memory stick, but there is also a failure to mount an LG Slim External Super Multi DVD Rewriter. I expected the memory stick to power up and offer up my ebooks for hours of reading enjoyment. Instead, nothing happened. [Bug 356318] Re: search in Synaptic not working properly
This one continues to pop up on both my desktop (64 bit) and laptop (32) each time I do a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04. It's happened about six or seven times now. But it is readily fixed using the method Paul Elms suggests above. -- search in Synaptic not working properly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/356318 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 356318] Re: search in Synaptic not working properly
I'm in the process of completing a fresh install of 9.04 64 bit and I seem to be having the same problem. I can't use either the quick search or search functions in synaptic at all. -- search in Synaptic not working properly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/356318 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
