Public bug reported: dns-nameservers entry in /etc/network/interfaces is ignored by systemd- resolved-- all of the other settings work, which adds quite a bit of confusion and frustration since Ubuntu recently switched to using netplan. It would be a **VERY** good idea to add a comment at the top of /etc/network/interfaces that this file is now deprecated, and provide information about the new netplan utility. [Bug 1181708] Re: Duplex printing doesn't work on multiple copies of single page
I am seeing this in Ubuntu 18.04 when using the GUI to print from many applications (gnome pdf viewer, Chrome, etc), but, when printing from the command line using lpr, I get the correct page count. I just tried printing out 3 2-page documents, and my printer spat out 9 copies before I killed power to it. Yesterday I tried printing 24 copies, and got over 50 before I killed the printer. I'm using an HP Laserjet Pro MFP M225dn. Since lpr works correctly, this appears to solely be a problem with the GUI print interface. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1181708 Title: Duplex printing doesn't work on multiple copies of single page To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/system-config-printer/+bug/1181708/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1189016] [NEW] New initrd images including drivers that should not be part of initrd
Public bug reported: With linux-3.2.0-45, and likely all other versions, initrd is including WAY more drivers that is needed to boot a system. This can be problematic as it makes it hard to blacklist specific drivers, and removing drivers /lib/modules doesn't help. Only someone with knowledge of initrd would be able to fix these issues. Specific problem that I encountered was when installing nVidia graphics drivers. Ubuntu uses nouveau which performs poorly, and has other issues (specifically with dual-displays). The factory drivers can't work and refuse to install with nouveau is installed. After removing the drivers from the expected place (/lib/modules), the system still had the nouveau drivers (which aren't required to boot a system). So, I had to extract the initrd image remove the kernel/drivers/gpu/drm branch (DRM? Really? What self respecting Linux user would tolerate DRM), which contained drivers nouveau, as well as drivers for many other graphics cards. The newly created image worked fine, and I was now able to install the far superior factory nVidia drivers. The only drivers that should be contained in initrd are: Block device drivers filesystem drivers chipset drivers usb HID drivers MAYBE wired ethernet drivers for netboot (but there can be conflicts which can only be resolved with driver blacklists) and any other drivers required for the system to boot Graphics card drivers are not among those that are required--standard vesa drivers works fine for first boot and generally don't cause issues (initrd loads the driver anyway). After the system loads, let the boot scripts selectively load what drivers are needed, and thus they can also follow the blacklist rules whereas the default initrd does not. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1189016 Title: New initrd images including drivers that should not be part of initrd To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1189016/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 489830] Re: Settings of gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent
This is still an issue with 12.04.1. I'm suprised it's been over 3 years now and there's no fix. I've never needed this feature before till I needed to configure a system to use a trackball instead of a mouse to enable the middle mouse button emmulation. The new Ubuntu system config menu doesn't even give an option to configure a pointing device. Almost all systems had an option to swap left/right mouse buttons--even MS-DOS mouse drivers, Unbuntu has become one of the few OS's to NOT have this ability. Most new people aren't familair with creating and editing an xorg config file, nor using xinput to work around these issues. [Bug 572813] Re: polkitd service is using all my RAM
Same here. I was going to simply remove the package, but it's tied to pretty much all the vital packages for the gnome desktop. Within 5 hours my system becomes unresponsive. This morning, when trying to log back into my computer at work, my system was unresponsive. I had to just restart to clean everything up. The only way to keep the system stable is to loop-kill polkitd, since gnome insists on restarting the stupid thing. I have created a startup script that'll work as a band-aid fix to keep systems from crashing, but it's not a solution. As for thoughts about this being related to puleaudio... removal of the .pulse directory achieved nothing. Attempt to remove pulseaudio also results in the same crash. At this point, I'd have to say the best course of action is to roll back GNOME to the version used in 9.10, which worked. Right now, systems are unstable because of this. ** Attachment added: startup script to loop-kill polkitd and keep system stable http://launchpadlibrarian.net/49566129/polkit-killer -- polkitd service is using all my RAM https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/572813 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Okay.. so I moved ~/.[a-z]* to a backup folder, then moved .mozilla* .thunderbird .purple, .openoffice.org .bashrc .viminfo .wine .dosboxrc back to ~ and... now polkitd is no longer showing up on top, and my system is now stable again. So.. Looks like the dis-upgrade should change it's behaviour somewhat and move users's gnome-related .* files to a backup directory, and everything will be peachy. and no, simply nuking .pulse didn't do the trick. Still, there is an issue with polkit that needs to be resolved so this isn't an issue in the future. [Bug 577566] Re: kernel updates ALWAYS breaks video drivers
Unfortunately that system has already been shipped. It'll be some time before I get around to doing a clean install on any of my existing systems. Regardless, the system had a clean install at first, and when the update utility was allowed to upgrade the system (including the linux kernel header files), the video stopped working. Also, when the system had a clean install, the nvidia package claimed the driver was being built, but it still didn't update the current kernel. The supported drivers do not work well with nVidia cards, and offer a very limited (800x600) resolution which is unacceptable. So there you go. The problem is most likely in the package's build process. I'm sure any log files would tell you something similar. nVidia was the first of the major 3d accelerated video card manufacturers to support linux with stable drivers, ATI came later. Even still, nVidia will remain a favorite among many Linux users, and not supporting the drivers is foolish. While old time linux users won't have much of a problem working around that, newer Linux users will be completely lost and will be scratching their heads wondering why their video stopped working (which is also what happened with my client when the update utility decided it was time to update the kernel again). If anything, a simple fix would be to disable auto-updates of the kernel by default. If a system works, there is generally no reason to update the kernel. Dist-upgrade to 10.4 from 9.10 on my notebook resulted in breaking my wifi card. reverting back to the older kernel fixed everything. Just an example (it's a RaLink card). But that's for another bug. -- kernel updates ALWAYS breaks video drivers https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/577566 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 577566] Re: kernel updates ALWAYS breaks video drivers
Well, what happens is, even when re-installing the kernel drivers the scripts mention the driver is being rebuilt, but it never gets installed in the proper place. It could possibly be a fault in the package it's self (old kernel version number got saved in some .config file maybe?). In any case, the only fix I've found was to download the drivers direct from nVidia and run their install script with gdm stopped. And that guy loves his new Ubuntu computer. [Bug 577566] [NEW] kernel updates ALWAYS breaks video drivers
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apt Whenever APT or the auto-updater updates the kernel, it always breaks the video drivers (specifically nvidia). This can be problematic to fix, especially if Ubuntu screws up your screen resolutions (ubuntu 8.04), and will require some knowledge to fix even after the video drivers have been reinstalled... This is very troublesome to me as I'm am about to ship out a new computer to a customer with Kubuntu reinstalled. How to fix: 1. Do not update the kernel by default when upgrade is run, add an extra update-kernel parameter. 2. Before updating the kernel, post a big caveat that it could break video drivers when upgrading. 3. If the kernel is reinstalled, the video drivers should be reinstalled as well (or, kernel and video drivers need to be released at the same time, with the kernel update occurring first). This is extremely problematic for those of us who also offer support for new systems, and have to deal with broken video drivers. Just fix it now. Quick hack to apt-get and auto-updaters that require the user to explicitly state they wish to update the kernel, and print a warning with confirmation dialogue before updating the kernel until a better solution can be found to automatically fix drivers and other software that could be affected by a kernel update. [Bug 577566] Re: kernel updates ALWAYS breaks video drivers
No, that relates to kernel headers. The kernel headers were fine, and were current enough for the nvidia factory drivers to accept them for building a new video kernel module. Re-installing the nvidia-current package, and even watching it say compiling kernel module still did nothing. Had to download the factory drivers and instruct my customer that, should they ever have a problem after an update, to kill kdm/gdm, and re-run the nvidia driver install utility. This suggests that also the nvidia install scripts are broken as well, or tied to a specific kernel version. i'm happy to say that I no longer have to remove any exisiting nvidia modules for the nvidia driver to install properly, which i had to do in the past because the wrong kernel module would load. Irregardless, the kernel headers are only needed when building a new drivers, but, when the new kernel loads, headers or not, the video driver gets broken. If the kernel gets updated, there needs to be some kind of check to see if modules need to be reinstalled/rebuilt... like, instead of just a dependency have a co-dependency such as, if this package gets changed/updated, then these need to as well. From a distribution stability standpoint, any co-dependent packages would need to be updated for the new kernel before the kernel could be considered stable to release into the wild for automatic updates. -- kernel updates ALWAYS breaks video drivers https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/577566 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 554411] [NEW] X11 escape CTRL-ALT-BS no longer works in 9.x version of ubuntu
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Prior to ubuntu 9.04, the CTRL-ALT-BS sequence worked fine. Hit those three magic keys, and the X Server would instantly die, saving you from some runaway X11 program... and also offering a very fast convenient way to crash-logout of X Window. For some unknown reason, this sequence no longer works. Doesn't matter if it's on a USB or PS/2 keyboard. All I can say is, right now, I'm glad my primary home computer still runs Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, though at work I use Ubuntu 9.10 and have to worry about some website causing the browser or Adobe Flash to freak out and kill my system, where CTL-ALT-BS could have saved it (or ssh into the machine from another computer, but that's a little crazy). I've been using that key sequence for over 14 years, and to have it suddenly not work anymore. I'm sure some idiot developer thought nobody uses that key sequence anymore, and disabled it. Well, it's still used, and still needed. Especially if you're a software developer, and accidentally do something that causes the window manager to go nuts... CTL-ALT-BS would save the system form having to do a cold reboot, and save a lot of time. [Bug 287711] Re: wireless network lags - rt61pci driver
With the latest version of the Linux kernel ,version 2.6.31, I do not have any trouble with the RT61PCI driver, with the latest firmware. Note that this is the driver that ships with the Linux kernel, not the one from the driver developer's website. I'm using a custom kernel, set to be a low-latency preemptive kernel with a clock rate of 1000HZ instead of the 250HZ that the Ubuntu kernel is compiled with. One of the changes from 2.6.24 to 2.6.31 is how the driver behaves. Before, parameters could not be set unless you issued a ifconfig wlan0 up command, with 2.6.31, you can not configure the device is down (eg ifconfig wlan0 down)-- exactly the opposite. The WiFi device WILL NOT come up right away. It will take about a minute to connect to the network... ether that, or it's due to me using a hacked Android-based Google G1 phone to share my 3G network connection via it's WiFi interface and http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi- tether/ but anyway.. [Bug 366170] Re: Upgrading to Jaunty breaks rt61pci wireless
I was able to get the driver to work with kernel version 2.6.31 using the kernel's drivers and the firmware provided by ralink. THE STOCK UBUNTU KERNEL AND DRIVERS WILL NOT WORK. Also, the order in which you configure the RT61 card has changed. Before, you had to turn on the device with ifconfig wlan0 up to configure the device with iwconfig, Now, it'll say the device is busy and won't let you configure it. So, issue ifconfig wlan0 down, and now you can configure your wireless card with iwconfig. Once when you're done, issue ifconfig wlan0 up, and wait about a minute or two, and then start up your DHCP client to get your IP address (the network link won't start up right away, esp. if using encryption). -- Upgrading to Jaunty breaks rt61pci wireless https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/366170 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 355879] [NEW] nice (renice) value too high
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: initscripts The renice value for processes is set too high (20 for user level processes). This makes the renice command useless for users. The nice value of all processes should be 0 (or -2 for critical processes, 0 for user level processes, or optionally 0 for X Window server, and 10 for user processes)-- but definitely not 20! To see why, read the man page on the renice command, and see what a nice value of 20 means. There is a nice range from -15 to 20, Why processes are being assigned value of 15 and 20 is just plain silly and cripples users ability to set priorities for their own processes without resorting to sudo. Discussion: The renice command is essentially worthless to normal users because, by default, the nice value is set at 20 for all user processes, and 15 for most system processes. I discovered that when I wanted to set the nice value of a process I was running to 20 (the lowest possible priority) only to discover that would do no good because ALL of my processes had a priority of 20. Priority 20 should only be used for processes that can wait till the system isn't busy to run. THIS SHOULD NOT INCLUDE X OR OTHER DESKTOP APPLICATIONS. Something like an FTP, massive video conversions, etc, would be something to assign to a nice value of 20. The nice value has a range from -15 to 20. Critical system daemons should be set to a negative nice value, user level processes should be given a nice value of 0 (or, at most 10), and the rest be left up to the user to decide if a process should be made more nice or not. By setting the nice value to 20, some of the most powerful user-level process controls are rendered worthless in that the user essentially has no power to tell the system one of their own CPU intensive processes is non-critical and it should allow other processes to take precedence over execution (like, say, playing Unreal Tournament 2004, or Savage 2 while waiting for a compile to finish or converting 4GB of raw video over to h.264). A more practical example of how renice command would be useful is a script that automagically sets the nice value for Flash processes to 20 so that badly designed web pages (or flash ads) can't hog the CPU from more important processes, like, say, the X Window interface. This won't do anything useful if the default nice value of user processes is already at 20. Please fix this. This is the only Linux distribution I've seen that broke the renice command for users. That's just pathetic. It also explains why the desktop sometimes hangs during system intensive processes. ** Affects: sysvinit (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- nice (renice) value too high https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/355879 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Erg,, nevermind. :/ nice values are correct... everyone gets to be an idiot sometime. Stupid ambiguous PR/NI column labels in top. Although, system performance could be improved by giving the X server a higher priority than apps launched by the window manager to make it easier to kill applications that have gone into a race condition. [Bug 252173] Re: Gnome slow as Windows Vista on Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron)
Funny you should say that, since this system was a fresh install. The only thing that had changed was the installation of the manufacturer's nVidia drivers. On all new installs, I bust out gdm, install the graphic drivers (I only use nVidia graphics cards in my systems, whether integrated into the motherboard or not), and then launch synaptic to install other packages. Synaptic was running slowly too, but it didn't occur to me that it had anything to do with the gnome configuration till I launched firefox and it took 1-2 seconds for drop-down menus to pop up. The only thing that the nVidia drivers change are the X11 config, they normally don't make a habit of muking up GNOME configs. I have another system that I'll be turning into a honeypot which also has an nVidia graphics card. My plan was to put BlueWhite on it, but I'll see if I can duplicate this for ubuntu. -- Gnome slow as Windows Vista on Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252173 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Mind you, I'm running a dual-core AMD 64 computer, with the latest nVidia drivers for my GeForce 7600 GS video card. This just makes Ubuntu look bad. The desktop video enhancements should be OFF by default, not ON. Earlier versions of GNOME would crash if these were turned on with my video card, so some users of GNOME may be having issues with the new version of Ubuntu if these features are left on. After turning off the video enhancements, my desktop was zooming agian, and it wasn't taking 2-3 seconds for a window to pop up, or for the desktop to respond to clicks. I am using 7.04, this is also an issue with previous versions of Ubuntu through 6.06. I have confirmed this to be a problem too when printing PDF files from other applications (xpdf, lpr, ggv). The problem is that the Ubuntu install/configuration process does not give an option to select the preferred paper size and does not install some utilities by default. While this is fine for those on the other side of the planet, this causes problems for those who have more expensive HP printers that won't print until the correct paper size has been selected in the tray. I am using the latest 64-bit desktop version, just downloaded a few days ago. My solution came from a search on the net and found that several other people have had the same problem. The other network configurations work fine, and the WiFi card is able to connect to an unencrypted network using the gnome tools-- just not an encrypted one. When attempting to connect to an encrypted wireless network, the connection is made and the network status shows packets are being sent with one or two initial packets being received, however the system is unable to communicate due to the lack of the encryption key being set correctly. The Intel documentation for their driver is very specific in that the encryption key is to be set at time of module load. Initially, I used the Gnome tools set up the wireless information which just included the ESSID and 128-bit encryption key and to get the IP address from DHCP. I haven't messed around with Ubuntu enough to know how it's configuration works internally. Sebastien Bacher wrote: Thanks for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use? I sell computers, specifically in the Los Angeles, CA, USA area (though I plan to open a shop up in Vancouver, BC, Canada in a year or so, but I'll probably leave an office in LA too). The problem goes very deep because the way that Microsoft requires OEM's and small PC builders like me to market PCs: When giving the price of a PC we're not supposed to list the Microsoft OS as a separate component with a separate price associated with it. This effectively hides from the consumer the fact that a little screwed up piece of software accounts for a significant cost of their PC. What I do to get around this is offer a “discount” for not shipping a computer win Microsoft Windows, or I offer custom systems simply with Linux or no operating system at all.For many people, they don't require the use of MS Windows or Microsoft Office, they can do everything they need in Linux, Open Office, and the 32-bit version of Firefox (Yes, the 64-bit versions of Linux should ship with a 32-bit browser so that the stupid Flash plugin can be installed so that all web pages, especially those made by incredibly stupid web designers, can be viewed-- there is no 64-bit or open source alternative available at this time). Anyone in the USA can get a Windows-Free laptop from me with GeForce graphics, and 100% Linux compatible hardware (including the wi-fi card). All of my PCs are built with Linux in mind. Bug me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] :-D For those of you in other countries-- I can't export yet. I am required by US law to get a permit for each country and type of hardware I wish to export (and, as you know, all permits cost money). Due to other screwed up laws, I can't export Linux because it has advanced encryption technology. I think the export laws in Canada will be a little more sane, but we'll see. There are many things in this country that have been screwed up since September 11, 2001 enough so to drive me out. Fear and hatred is a great way to excuse many things, just ask Adolph Hitler, Saddam, and Osama Bin Ladin. America now has it's secret police... Out the four Linux distributions I've used, Ubuntu is one of the better, with a few Caveats: Why on earth aren't the compiler tools installed with the default system!?! The C compiler is one of the the basic Unix tools, in addition to the the Bourne Shell, VI, and cp! Not installing cc is a sacrilege! Also, not everyone has a high speed Internet connection, even in affluent America, so if not all the available packages for a basic usable system (which includes a video/DVD player like mplayer, and finance program like GnuCash) fit on the CD, then separate ISO package CDs should be made available for offline install of software. -- Microsoft has a majority market share https://launchpad.net/bugs/1 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 67876] ipw2200/Intel 2915abg Wireless 128-bit WEP doesn't work, must set up manually
Public bug reported: The Network Configuration tool is unable to set up a working 128-bit WEP encrypted link with the ipw2200, however unencrypted networks work fine. I was able to find a work around, but it has to do with the order in which the card is initialized. This is a little bothersome since I plan on selling Linux laptops... It is vital that, before setting up the network connection, the wifi card is disabled, then the following steps are taken to initialize the card IN THIS ORDER! iwconfg device essid your id here iwconfig device key encryption key, 64 or 128-bit ifup device Now your 128-bit WEP link is up and running with the Intel/PRO 2915ABG 802.11a/b/g Mini-PCI wireless card. It is also interesting to note that when you disable the wireless connection from the command line with ifconfig without disabling it in configuration utility, the wifi card will reconnect to any available network-- which, in this case, was my next door neighbor's unencrypted network that had a router still configured using the default login password. Brilliant Mac user... ** Affects: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- ipw2200/Intel 2915abg Wireless 128-bit WEP doesn't work, must set up manually https://launchpad.net/bugs/67876 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
