[Bug 745635] Re: isotesting - ubiquity doesn't request keyboard-layout

2011-03-30 Thread Evan Dandrea
It sounds like the keyboard layout page crashed. Can you please run the
installer again, press 'Try Ubuntu', open a terminal and type `ubiquity
-d`. Run the install until you get to the user account creation page,
then run `apport-collect 745635`.

Thanks!

[Bug 739808] [NEW] [MIR] apt-clone

2011-03-21 Thread Evan Dandrea
Public bug reported:

I realize we're beyond Feature Freeze, but this code has been used in
Ubiquity since that point, and this package is just a matter of
splitting out that script so it can be maintained independently.

I have checked over the package and it does not appear to violate any of
the main inclusion requirements. It is not a security concern. It is
meant to be consumed by other applications, so translations are not of
concern. It meets all policy requirements. It's maintained within
Ubuntu.

Ubiquity will depend on this package with the next upload.

[Bug 739492] [NEW] ubiquity does not clean up after apt-clone

2011-03-21 Thread Evan Dandrea
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Ubiquity currently leaves /ubiquity-apt-clone/ present on the installed
system. We should either delete this (if we're *really* confident that
the upgrade/reinstall functionality is without bugs, or alternatively,
move it into /var/log/installer. The latter makes it a bit hard to
discover and it could potentially be large if there are a lot of

[Bug 732013] [NEW] Installer should check the architecture of the existing OS for the reuse option

2011-03-09 Thread Evan Dandrea
Public bug reported:

Ubiquity was recently redesigned to include an upgrade ubuntu option
(see bug #723849). I was wondering if this option would allow the user
to move from 32-bit to 64-bit (eg.: 10.10 32-bit - 11.04 64-bit). It
would be extremely useful if you could just press a button to upgrade
your system from 32 to 64-bit (provided you have a 64-bit processor and
the appropriate CD).

[Bug 652852] Re: Ubiquity doesn't suggest to install on unallocated free space

2011-03-07 Thread Evan Dandrea
Why is the status changed from confirmed to invalid?

Because we don't track bugs against the Ubiquity project; we use the
ubiquity source package in Ubuntu. The bug is still marked as confirmed
against the latter.

Maybe I'm being dense, but would it help move this forward if UI
isn't complete is more detailed?

You can once again use a large amount of unpartitioned space on the disk
for Ubuntu. The option is Install Ubuntu alongside it. However, in
current daily-live CDs, this will proceed to a second screen (and likely
crash, given bug 727842) that's currently unrelated to this option.

This is fixed in ubiquity trunk, which I'll be uploading shortly. New
CDs will be out roughly one day after this bug gets automatically
closed. Make sure the version of ubiquity you're using (ubiquity
--version) is 2.5.23 or greater before filing any new bugs.

[Bug 727905] Re: Installer windows are sometimes too tall for small wide-screen devices (netbooks)

2011-03-06 Thread Evan Dandrea
To be clear, I've kept a maximum 600 vertical pixels (as that seems to
be common on netbooks) as the goal for the installer when running in the
default session (just one panel, on the top).

Also, I failed to mention before that it's my intention to trim down
that string to its former length, which will cause the advanced
partitioning page to once again fit.

[Bug 723990] Re: Natty A2 Install stuck in endless loop

2011-03-06 Thread Evan Dandrea
If you are experiencing this bug with the absolute latest daily-live CD, please
do the following:
 - Boot the CD and press Try Ubuntu.
 - Edit /lib/partman/lib/base.sh and put set -x on the second line.
 - Open a terminal and run ubiquity -d.
 - Proceed through the installer until it hangs, at which point run
apport-collect 723990
 - Also attach the output of ps auxf to this bug report once the installer is
hanging.

So that's clearly ended up as not swap. I'm entirely unsure how this

then 'ubiquity -d'). Please attach the new logs once you have done

[Bug 727758] Re: [apt-clone] fails silently during pkg install because debconf db is locked

2011-03-03 Thread Evan Dandrea
This is due to the installer holding a lock on debconf. We normally
work around this by using an in-memory database, but that will mean any
debconf questions will be skipped. We could wire something up with
passthrough -- though debconf dialogs in the middle of the install is
pretty hideous -- or, perhaps we should copy the debconf database as
part of apt-clone as well.

[Bug 628097] Re: Maverick ubiquity windows can not be resized/maximized

2011-03-03 Thread Evan Dandrea
This is by design. The installer employs some complex layouts and the
most straightforward and reliable way to accomplish this is to force the
window to a fixed size.

The slideshow should never be cut off. If it is in Natty, please file a
separate bug for that. The advanced partitioner is a bit cramped at the
moment due to a particularly long string for the bootloader options.

[Bug 727938] Re: ubiquity not fully localized for CJK

2011-03-03 Thread Evan Dandrea
These are new strings, which is why they're appearing untranslated.
Once the translators have updated the translations and updated
translations have been pulled from Launchpad, this will automatically be
fixed.

[Bug 723833] Re: Installer – If you pause for a short time on the 'do you want to install or try Ubuntu' install process screen you automatically boot into Ubuntu.

2011-03-01 Thread Evan Dandrea
It does not actually do this. I suspect what you're seeing is the
installer or, more likely, its X session crashing and the regular
desktop session starting in its place. This is probably the result of
bug #714829, which is fixed in the most recent versions of ubiquity, and
present on the 20110301.1 and newer daily-live CDs.

[Bug 726453] [NEW] [MIR] dpkg-repack

2011-02-28 Thread Evan Dandrea
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dpkg-repack

dpkg-repack is needed as part of the package preservation code when
upgrading or reusing a partition in the desktop installer (ubiquity).
It's been in the archive for ages, is written by a trusted upstream
(Joey Hess), and has all of its dependencies in main. It's also
extremely tiny, so it wont affect CD sizes much.

[Bug 724447] [NEW] Compiz in Expose mode should not show the desktop when clicked on

2011-02-24 Thread Evan Dandrea
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

When you enter Expose mode (meta-W), if you click on the desktop instead
of one of the windows, it shows the desktop. This is annoying as compiz
will not show windows in Expose mode that are minimized, so in order to
get everything back to its previous state, you need to alt-tab through
all of the open windows.

I've spoken with John Lea about this and he mentioned that the correct
place to implement the show desktop functionality is in the alt-tab
list.

[Bug 723849] [NEW] Feature freeze exception for ask page remodeling and package preservation option

2011-02-23 Thread Evan Dandrea
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I'd like to request a feature freeze exception for the work on
redesigning the first page of the partitioner in the desktop CD
installer, and for the /home preservation and package retaining install
functionality as listed in packageselection-foundations-n-update-
manager-improvements. As they're both quite tied to each other, I'm
making the request with this single bug.

This work is quite far along, having seen design from Daniel Fore, copy
and UI work from Matthew Paul Thomas, apt code from mvo, and work from
myself on changing the automatic partitioner to fit all of this;
however, I'm going to need the weekend to finish integrating it all into

Adding the following to the kernel command line from the CD bootloader
should do the trick (assuming you have an ethernet connection):

d-i preseed/early_command string chroot root apt-get -y install openssh-
server

Alternatively, you can add break=bottom to the kernel command line, then:
(initramfs)
chroot root bash
mount -t proc proc /proc
mount -t devpts devpts /dev/pts
dhclient eth0
screen apt-get -y install openssh-server
exit

[Bug 720679] [NEW] Compiz clears the root window in the installer session

2011-02-17 Thread Evan Dandrea
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

In both Maverick and Natty, when replacing metacity with compiz in the
installer session, the root window gets initially painted by /usr/bin
/ubiquity-dm (you can see it for about a second) and then cleared to
black by compiz. There do not appear to be any windows set to
_NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_DESKTOP.

To reproduce:
Boot a live CD and press a key when you see the 'man = keyboard' icon. Select
a language then hit F6 over the first option. This will bring up the kernel
command line. Add 'break=bottom maybe-ubiquity' just before '--', leaving a
space between them, then hit enter to boot.

This should then bring you to an initramfs prompt. Type 'chroot root
bash' then 'sed -i s/'metacity'/'compiz'/g /usr/bin/ubiquity-dm'.
Type exit and exit again.

You should now be booted into the live session using compiz. The screen
will be black, despite the code in /usr/bin/ubiquity-dm that attempts to
paint to the root window. 'DISPLAY=:0 xsetroot -solid red' from a VT
will also not work.

[Bug 650703] Re: oem-config-prepare works, but oem-config fails to start after reboot

2011-02-17 Thread Evan Dandrea
from #ubuntu-installer, for historical context:

(10:08:29) Evan: hmm, if oem-config starts on stopping rc, then conceivably gdm
could start shortly thereafter as oem-config isn't in the start on starting gdm
condition, thus if oem-config takes a bit long to get to X startup in
ubiquity-dm, gdm could have already started X on vt7
(10:09:59) Evan: (going off of this http://paste.ubuntu.com/568103/ )
(10:30:58) Evan: hm, accommodating the debconf frontend in the upstart job is
going to be a bit tricky, it seems.

additional dummy job and have the standard job start on that dummy job's start?

the boot process. Take a picture of whats on the screen once it's
definitely hanging.
