[Bug 1956145] [NEW] Nautilus gives a cryptic error message when I try to navigate to /root after I give my password

2022-01-01 Thread Freyr Gunnar Ólafsson
Public bug reported:

Open nautilus.
click on Other Locations
click on Computer, then root
password prompt window opens, I type in my password.

Error message windows pops up:

Oops! Something went wrong.
Unhandled error message:
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed:Unix
process subject does not have uid set

Not only is this cryptic, it doesn't help me understand what went wrong.
I should be able to navigate and handle file management in /root with sudo
privileges via Nautilus.

[Bug 951875] [NEW] mplayer complains that libcdio_cdda.so.0 and libcdio_paranoia.so.0 are missing

2012-03-10 Thread Freyr Gunnar Ólafsson
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu precise (development branch)
Release:12.04

I expected mplayer to run normally.
Instead I got errors.

The first error I got recently after I updated was:
mplayer: error while loading shared libraries: libcdio_cdda.so.0: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory
I created a symlink libcdio_cdda.so.0 -- libcdio_cdda.so.1 in /usr/lib and the
first error disapeared.

I tried to also create a symlinks for libcdio_paranoia.so.0 but of
course mplayer complained that it couldn't find the right versioning
info.

mplayer: /usr/lib/libcdio_paranoia.so.0: version `CDIO_PARANOIA_0' not found
(required by mplayer)
mplayer: /usr/lib/libcdio_cdda.so.0: version `CDIO_CDDA_0' not found (required
by mplayer)

It seems that these libraries have been removed from precise. Seems that
mpayer needs to be rebuild in the repos.

[Bug 511759] Re: Webcam doesn't work on dell latitude E5400

2011-05-05 Thread Freyr Gunnar Ólafsson
After asking a dell rep about the machine it turns out that it doesn't
actually have a webcam. It just has the chassis for it (the glass
housing above the monitor and the led light next to it). I just couldn't
imagine that it didn't have one since dell had bothered to make it look
like it did). Really rather infuriating.

[Bug 746330] [NEW] sadms fails trying to find libc in /lib/libc-*.so

2011-03-31 Thread Freyr Gunnar Ólafsson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sadms

sadms error log outputs this:
ls: cannot access /lib/libc-*.so: No such file or directory
I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 alpha, fully updated as of 31. march 2011
Description:Ubuntu Natty (development branch)
Release:11.04

sadms:
  Installed: 2.0.15.repack-0ubuntu1

 *** 2.0.15.repack-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://is.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty/universe i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I expected the machine to be joined into the active directory domain, instead I
got a bag full of errors and no domain membership joy ;-/
syslog says:
Mar 31 09:41:12 ibm-r50e-07 sadms: sadms finish error 7 join domain
Mar 31 09:44:12 ibm-r50e-07 sadms: sadms start
Mar 31 09:44:23 ibm-r50e-07 sadms: sadms finish error 7 join domain

I hope this is thorough enough.

 Hi Freyr,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
 http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and
attach updated debug information to this report.

 apport-collect -p linux 511759

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be
great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
 Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested
the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This
can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at
the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing'
text. Please let us know your results.

 Thanks in advance.

Thank you very much for replying to me. I will try everything that you
suggest. I have one question though: I'm running 10.04 and I update
every day. Is that not the same as downloading and booting from the
latest ISO? If it isn't the same, why isn't it the same?

Anyway, I will post another reply once I have tried all of your helpful
suggestions. Thank you :)

[Bug 343556] Re: MacBook rev3, rev4: Wireless works in 8.10 but not in Jaunty

2009-05-25 Thread Freyr Gunnar Ólafsson
Adding the blacklist fixed it for me as per the advice of Dave Vasilevsky. I'm
running Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit on a Dell Latitude D630 and the wireless didn't
work. I added the wl to /etc/modules but I don't know if that did anything
more.
At least it works now. Thank you :-)

[Bug 319943] [NEW] pykota print quotas manager needs-packaging

2009-01-22 Thread Freyr Gunnar Ólafsson
Public bug reported:

Pykota is a gpl-v2 adds print quotas to cups and some tools to manage quotas.
This is absolutely needed for enterprise use and hereby ask that this be added
to Ubuntu. The bleeding edge version can be downloaded by doing:
svn co http://svn.pykota.com/pykota/trunk pykota
However, in order to download their stable version one has to pay around 25$
for an account on the website.Note: this is not a license for the software,
which is under gpl-v2, only a *cost to access* it.
The website is: http://www.pykota.com/

[Bug 190266] [NEW] realtek 8189 wireless internal usb doesn't work

2008-02-08 Thread Freyr Gunnar Ólafsson
Public bug reported:

I finally got my father to try out ubuntu on a brand new laptop he bought.
There are two serious bugs. I'll also report the other in a seperate bug.
This is a Packard Bell ME35 laptop. The wireless card is a rtl8189 internal
usb. Lspci won't show it but lsusb displays:
Bus 006 Device 003: ID 0bda:8189 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.

I really wan't this to work out of the box. I've tried several things
I found from google, a hacked 8187b driver ndiswrapper. Nothing worked

[Bug 153857] games crash X or freeze system if compiz is turned on

I have a radeon9700 mobile (this is a laptop).

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2007-08-01 Thread Freyr Gunnar Ólafsson
Yes, I have the same issue when I try to login with a new user. Also, I have
previously stated that I have a new machine. My box is not slow ;-/
mb: abit in-9 32x-max (with upgraded bios)
cpu: E6600
ram: 2GB (1066mhz)
GFX: Geforce 8800 gts (640mb)
This also doesn't happen with 7.04 where login is almost instantaneous.
After I get back home from work I will post the xorg.conf and all relevant logs
I can think of that might help.

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2007-08-01 Thread Freyr Gunnar Ólafsson
Please let me know if anything else could help in solving this.
Also I will post a note here if any update fixes this. I'll also try to
reinstall from the next daily iso
and see if this goes away or not.
Thank you for your help.

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2007-07-28 Thread Freyr Gunnar Ólafsson
Yup, I sure do. I have found a way to manually fix it. I open the run dialog
(alt-f2) and run gnome-terminal. I then run: sudo killall -9 gnome-panel and
the panels finally pop up.
Maybe that helps with narrowing down the problem for you :)

Hope this helps.

I also found out that I can't run the run dialog (alt-f2) unless I first wait
for a long while first. I know when when the background image I choose appears.
I have a new machine with components I picked out myself. I have a brand-new
computer.

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2007-07-28 Thread Freyr Gunnar Ólafsson
I tried that but without success I'm afraid. I also took the time from after
pressing enter after entering my password until a full gnome desktop was up. It
took 3 minutes and 10 seconds. I did that twice with the same result.
I also remembered that I'm using the nvidia blob. I'll remove that, change the
driver to the free one (nv) and see if it makes a difference. I could also try
to reinstall if the nvidia blob does something naughty.
Thank you for your time :)

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2007-07-28 Thread Freyr Gunnar Ólafsson
I tried again after removing the nvidia driver and changing xorg.conf. It took
the exact same time. 3 minutes and 10 seconds. Also, this didn't happen in
7.04 (with or without the nvidia driver).
So, what's next? Are there any logs or stuff that I can give you?

[Bug 128803] very slow gnome startup

2007-07-27 Thread Freyr Gunnar Ólafsson
Public bug reported:

I installed from the tribe3 gutsy gibbon and then updated the system (without
having logged in yet) from console (ctrl-alt-F1).
When I log in via gdm it takes literally minutes for the gnome desktop to show
up (leading to me installing links).
I seriously want to help fix this problem, but I don't know what information
would be helpful. Please reply and I will give whatever info you require.

Thank you for your attention.

[Bug 115968] Re: Cannot setup resolution higher than 1024x768 on laptop with ATI Mobility Radeon card

2007-05-25 Thread Freyr Gunnar Ólafsson
I'm having the exact same problem on a desktop computer. I have in it a radeon
x700 gfx card and I can't seem to get any resolution over 1024x768. I have
tried to change the monitors horizsync and vertrefresh (since they seem to be
slightly different from distro to distro) as well as adding the resolutions to
xorg.conf. 1280x1024, 1280x960 work in MS Windows ;-/
The monitor is a medion 17 inch FH (4:3).
I tried both the binary blog driver from ATI as well as the free driver. I hope
this helps.

[Bug 88935] rendering slowness

2007-03-01 Thread Freyr Gunnar Ólafsson
Public bug reported:

What I did: Install Feisty Fawn herd3 desktop, update and upgrade
everything. I specifically did NOT install fglrx since the Free driver
works quite well. I did tune up my xorg.conf (like setting the agp to 4x
etc.). I also installed beryl, but I don't run it except just to show
off smugly to the windows folk.

Direct renering works well (get around 2100fps in glxgears). The problem
is that everything (and especially firefox) is very slow to load and is
very unresponsive, especially while loading. I'm comparing the load
speed to how Feisty was just a few days ago. Programs don't respond to
mouse inputs until often up to a half a minute or more. One example I
can give is changing between tabs in firefox takes 10-20 seconds, I
cannot create a new tab while a webpage is loading and each page (even
google.com) takes ages to appear. Swapping between workspaces can takes
from 30 sec up to a minute which is unbearable. This problem is also
apparent in mozilla thunderbird. Clicking on a subfolder just takes
forever. Even the mousepointer stops responding often when firefox is
loading and it has never done that before. I tried booting slightly
older kernel version, but to no avail. Since this problem is with the
whole gnome desktop is simply makes ubuntu unusable for the time being.
I had to boot into WINDOWS!

I will post my xorg.conf. That is the only thing that I have played with
to any serious extend since I installed. Mostly for fun. I will try to
comment out those changes I made and see if it makes a difference.

Cheers.

The laptop is a Mitac 8050D. Basically a Pentium M 1.5ghz, radeon9700

significance. Maybe not.
