[Bug 1879558] Re: grub-efi-amd64 postinst fails to install GRUB if previous GRUB install is not detected
> You can just run grub-install once by hand, and it will all update correctly afterwards. The package already has a good debconf-driven install process for GRUB ---requiring the user to do it manually not only discards the benefit of that, it's a delicate and error-prone operation that most users are not accustomed to doing (hence wrapping it in debconf). The core of the problem is the chicken-and-egg scenario of requiring GRUB to be installed in order to install GRUB. I just want to do e.g. "dpkg-reconfigure grub-efi-amd64" on a newborn system, and have the instalL_devices question come up. Right now, in order to get that, I have to fool the postinst script by running "touch /boot/grub/x86_64-efi/core.efi" beforehand. [Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag in native terminal on Nvidia desktops with X11
I've found a workaround: I conducted a fresh installation of Ubuntu 22.04.4 and subsequently marked specific packages for holding using the following commands: $ sudo apt-mark hold gir1.2-mutter-10 $ sudo apt-mark hold libmutter-10-0 $ sudo apt-mark hold mutter-common Following this, I proceeded to update all packages. Important context from https://lists.debian.org/debian-security- announce/2024/msg00057.html : Andres Freund discovered that the upstream source tarballs for xz-utils, the XZ-format compression utilities, are compromised and inject malicious code, at build time, into the resulting liblzma5 library. [Bug 2059059] [NEW] Problem with -fno-stack-clash-protection flag on armhf
Public bug reported: This concerns libdpkg-perl 1.22.4ubuntu5 in Ubuntu noble. In /usr/share/perl5/Dpkg/Vendor/Ubuntu.pm, there is this bit: # Debian enables -fstack-clash-protection but it causes troubles on armhf # (which are not fully analyzed as of writing this); disable it there in # order to have time to investigate if ($arch eq 'armhf') { # Stack clash protector only available on amd64 and arm. $flags->set_feature('hardening', 'stackclash', 0); } Then in /usr/share/perl5/Dpkg/Vendor/Debian.pm, this logic: # Stack clash if ($flags->use_feature('hardening', 'stackclash')) { my $flag = '-fstack-clash-protection'; $flags->append($_, $flag) foreach @compile_flags; } else { my $flag = '-fno-stack-clash-protection'; $flags->append($_, $flag) foreach @compile_flags; } Which causes -fno-stack-clash-protection to be added to the package build flags. [Bug 1904265] Re: Deterministic bluetooth disconnects after login and bluetooth restart
It seems as I found a permanent fix. In case anyone having the same issue, this approach fixed it for me: 1. Unpair the mouse in Windows, i.e. delete it inside the Bluetooth settings. This will delete the respective keys in the Windows registry, too. 2. Unpair the mouse in Ubuntu, i.e. revoke the connection inside the settings menu. Thereafter, check whether the respective directory inside /var/lib/bluetooth// still exists and if so, delete it (requires root privileges). 3. Reboot Ubuntu. 4. Repair the mouse in Ubuntu, this will create a new directory inside /var/lib/bluetooth//. 5. Verify that the connection works after rebooting / restarting the Bluetooth service without any freezes. 6. Thereafter, start Windows and repair the mouse there, too. This of course will overwrite Ubuntu's setting, but the directory and the configuration files exists, only the keys will become invalid by the Windows pairing. 7. Verify that the mouse works fine in Windows, too, in particular after rebooting etc. 8. Restart Ubuntu and adjust the configuration files accordingly, i.e. transfer the keys and maybe rename the directory inside /var/lib/bluetooth// accordingly to match the Windows configuration (as described in various tutorials). 9. Thereafter, my mouse worked fine with both, Windows and Ubuntu. ** Description changed: Hello everyone, a few months ago I upgraded from 18.04 to 20.04 and since then, I'm into some bluetooth connection issues. I'm a KDE user currently using Ubuntu 5.4.0-53.59-generic 5.4.65, still the reported issue also appears with plain ubuntu 20.04, even a clean live USB version of ubuntu 20.04 reproduces it such that it is independent of any KDE library. I've noticed the following bug already a few months ago, still I would like to wait and see if it might be resolved with a new kernel update or something else. Since it still persists, I now would like to report it to the devs. I found no similar reported bug but if it already has been reported, I'd like to excuse for reporting a duplicate. So, I'm using a Logitech bluetooth LE mouse and with ubuntu 18.04 (actually on any distro based on 18.04 that I tested), everything works fine and without any problems. Still with 20.04, I'm into the following bug that I would like to report. After starting ubuntu, the bluetooth connection to the mouse works (i.e. pointer is moving) and after about 30-40 seconds it stops moving and freezes for about 10-15 seconds and thereafter works again and stays working. The same issue can be reproduced by executing (for instance on a live ubuntu) sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart which stops the bluetooth connection for a few seconds (as expected), immediately it works again but after additional 30-40 seconds, the connection breaks for another 10-15 seconds and thereafter works flawlessly. I checked all configuration files from the /etc/bluetooth/ directory, everything is the same between 18.04 and 20.04 and even modifying the parameters does not change anything at all. As a conclusion of my testing I strongly guess it has either anything to do with a different kernel version or a with a changed bluetooth library between 18.04 and 20.04. So in summary: Expected behavior: Bluetooth connection shortly breaks after 'sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart' and does not break again after 30-40 seconds (as it is the case with ubuntu 18.04) Actual behavior: Bluetooth connection breaks again after reestablishing the connection - I'm hoping that this issue can easily be fixed and please let me know if you need any further information :-) - --- - ProblemType: Bug - ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu27.4 - Architecture: amd64 - AudioDevicesInUse: - USERPID ACCESS COMMAND - /dev/snd/controlC0: ubuntu 5435 F pulseaudio - /dev/snd/controlC2: ubuntu 5435 F pulseaudio - /dev/snd/controlC1: ubuntu 5435 F pulseaudio - CasperMD5CheckResult: pass - CasperVersion: 1.445.1 - CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME - DistroRelease: Ubuntu 20.04 - LiveMediaBuild: Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS "Focal Fossa" - Release amd64 (20200731) - MachineType: HP HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop 15-cx0xxx - NonfreeKernelModules: zfs zunicode zavl icp zcommon znvpair - Package: linux (not installed) - ProcEnviron: - TERM=xterm-256color - PATH=(custom, no user) - XDG_RUNTIME_DIR= - LANG=en_US.UTF-8 - SHELL=/bin/bash - ProcFB: 0 EFI VGA - ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/username.seed maybe-ubiquity quiet splash nomodeset --- - ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.4.0-42.46-generic 5.4.44 - RelatedPackageVersions: - linux-restricted-modules-5.4.0-42-generic N/A - linux-backports-modules-5.4.0-42-generic N/A - linux-firmware1.187.2 - Tags: focal - Uname: Linux 5.4.0-42-generic x86_64 - UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) - UserGroups: adm cdrom dip lpadmin lxd
[Bug 1918948] Re: Issue in Extended Disk Data retrieval (biosdisk: int 13h/service 48h)
@Filofel, thanks for your report! Very interesting. Is your machine a Dell, running with HW RAID? My experience so far with GRUB and this LP bug is that there are two things here: (a) Seems commit [0] might be missing in old Ubuntu releases (IIRC Xenial, but *maybe* Bionic). This might cause issues with some disks 2T+ ... (b) [And this is the main issue reported in this LP] Dell HW RAID *legacy BIOS* driver has a bug and fails to inform properly some data to Grub. In other words: imagine 5x1T disks composing a HW RAID of 5T. Grub asks BIOS data (through nativedisk likely) and the legacy BIOS driver from Dell returns data from disk 01 only - 1T of size. So, if GRUB itself (some module, for example) or the kernel/initrd are present in sectors *after* disk 01 size, it fails to load. For more reference on that, please check the following thread: https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/grub-devel/2021-03/msg00380.html [According Dell, this is "expected" and UEFI is required!] So, your case seems a little bit different. Maybe wirth to clarify the exact model of your 4T disk, the version of Firmware (and of course the machine model) and maybe collect some GRUB logs. Interesting that you mentioned running with "--disk-module=ahci" make it works - I wonder why this isn't set by defualt on Ubuntu, likely there is a reason and I'm not aware. Cheers! [Bug 1970672] Re: makedumpfile falls back to cp with "__vtop4_x86_64: Can't get a valid pmd_pte."
Thanks a lot Cascardo and Dann - very good points. Cascardo: I agree with you, I misunderstood and didn't consider the minor kernel releases. I think that Dann's idea of testing makes it much simpler though. Maybe kernel team could create the vmcore images, as part of the release process, for some random kernels (like generic + 3 cloud kernels randomly) and "dump" into this server. So, makedumpfile test infrastructure would then consume the vmcores and execute the test, checking against bugs/regressions. The test could be quite simple, just checking return value of makedumpfile and if the file created is in fact a compressed dump (the "file" tool could be used by that). I agree with you as well Dann, makedumpfile is much more important than the crash tool and should have priority. Also, testing makedump is easier than checking the crash tool I guess heheh Cheers! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1970672 Title: makedumpfile falls back to cp with "__vtop4_x86_64: Can't get a valid pmd_pte." [Bug 1970672] Re: makedumpfile falls back to cp with "__vtop4_x86_64: Can't get a valid pmd_pte."
Thanks Kellen and Cascardo. Kellen, nice that you're willing to work on that - this is a long standing problem and that work would be definitely appreciated by the Ubuntu community, be it free users or the Ubuntu Advantage customers! Cascardo, about your two risks: (a) Partially agree with that. I agree with the part of testing, definietly this is the big chunk of work here. But I disagree with the retrocompatibility claim: of course we need to enforce that, but it's not that difficult in the LTS->LTS+1 model. See, we have a small number of HWE kernel per LTS release, I guess 4 or 5 correct? We need to be sure the makedumpfile updates are compatible with them, and that's it. If I'm talking Focal and some makedumpfile update (unintentionally) breaks dumps for kernel 4.19 or prior, why should we care if that's an unsupported scenario? IMHO it's much better to ensure that every HWE kernel receives a proper functional makedumpfile update, instead of an overly cautious attitude with older/unsupported kernels. (b) I agree here, but I guess the effort of SRU exception/ LTS->LTS+1 model will only make it easier. Imagine if when Ubuntu version X is released the upstream makedumpfile is not handling well the recent kernel version used by X - so we could either fix (or report) the makedumpfile issue quickly (especially due to part (a) above, the improved testing). Then, once it's fixed either by Canonical or community, this could quickly be integrated through a fast process, a version bump for makedumpfile for example. In the end, I think testing is the key word here - the more serious and thorough tests makedumpfile has, the more confidence in such model we'd have. But hopefully with Kellen's effort this stops preventing a more proactive approach with makedumpfile from happening, by updating it before users report bugs (which has been happening since forever for this package). [Bug 1970672] Re: makedumpfile falls back to cp with "__vtop4_x86_64: Can't get a valid pmd_pte."
Hi Kellen, thanks a lot for reporting and fixing that! I'd like to take the opportunity to discuss something related: no matter how many bugs we fix in makedumpfile / crash, more will come as kernel version bumps. Kernel has no stable ABI, so kernel developers can "break" compatibility with such tools, although makedumpfile maintainer (and crash's as well!) are really great in keep up with that and release proactive fixes even before the kernel change is merged. But the problem is: in Ubuntu ecosystem, despite we have the HWE concept for kernel, these packages are not part of kernel HWE upgrades; hence, they get "stuck" and subject to bugs when kernel HWE is released. It happens all the time and will continue happening... We had discussions in the past (and I'm hereby CCing the interested parties: DannF, Dan Streetman, Heitor and Cascardo) about sync'ing makedumpfile and crash with kernel HWE upgrades. So, that might be a good opportunity for doing it. The idea was more or less like this: update makedump/crash on Release to make it sync'ed with Release +1 until the next LTS. So, in the end, we'll have LTS version == LTS +1 and then, we stop upgrading/syncing these packages. And the cycle restarts for LTS+1, up to the release of LTS+2. Hopefully this plan (or something similar) eventually is followed, I bet all users/customers would be glad to not face makedump/crash bugs due to kernel upgrades anymore! I don't this this fix is correct, I am able to reproduce the crash in a hyper-v VM and this generates a different KASAN bad free with the repro case. [Bug 1973302] [NEW] "/usr/bin/VBoxClient --vmsvga" causes black screen inside VirtualBox host
Public bug reported: This concerns virtualbox-guest-x11 6.1.32-dfsg-1build1 in Ubuntu jammy. I am running the Xubuntu (Xfce) desktop inside of a VirtualBox host (5.2.42-dfsg-0~ubuntu1.18.04.1) on Ubuntu bionic. The system boots fine, and I get to the lightdm login prompt without issue. Shortly after logging in, however, the entire (guest) screen turns black. The desktop appears to be running normally, I can start X applications from a virtual terminal, I can even confirm with xev(1) that mouse movements are being recognized within the black screen. However, nothing I do gets anything to display, other than killing the session from a VT and returning to lightdm. I have tracked down the issue to the invocation of "/usr/bin/VBoxClient --vmsvga" in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/98vboxadd-xclient . If I comment out that line, then the session appears normally. If I re-enable it, the black screen returns. Heck, if I run that in a terminal in a working session, the black screen returns. Killing the VBoxClient process at fault does not restore normal video. ** Affects: virtualbox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: jammy -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1973302 Title: "/usr/bin/VBoxClient --vmsvga" causes black screen inside VirtualBox host To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox/+bug/1973302/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
