[Bug 1942139] [NEW] Debug symbols not available for 237-3ubuntu10.51

2021-08-30 Thread Garrett Rodriguez
Public bug reported:

I am trying to install the debug symbols for systemd 237-3ubuntu10.51
from http://ddebs.ubuntu.com/ for Ubuntu 18.04 (bionic) and they do not
seem to be available. The latest version I see is systemd-dbgsym
237-3ubuntu10.50 from http://ddebs.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-
updates/main. I do see the ddeb package file for version 10.51 here
http://ddebs.ubuntu.com/pool/main/s/systemd/ but it does not seem to be
included in bionic or bionic-updates package index files. Is there a
timeline for when this will be released?

Note that I am having the same problem with libsystemd0 with the same
versions. Please let me know if I should open a separate bug for that
issue.

[Bug 1927259] [NEW] On Screen Keyboard Unable to Type

2021-05-05 Thread Garrett
Public bug reported:

Confirmed happening in Ubuntu Hirsute but working normally in Ubuntu Bionic:
On Screen keyboard popup does not type anything into the ubuntu GUI
applications on first popup. for applications like the wifi login prompt, login
screen textbox, and search bar function, typing on the virtual keyboard that
automatically pops up does nothing (mouse or touchscreen as input), only
hitting the enter button submits the prompt which then closes and reopens the
keyboard, then the keyboard works as intended.

Other applications do not have this issue, like firefox and work fine on
the first automatic popup of the keyboard.

This issue makes it impossible to login on a touchscreen only device
unless the user knows to hit enter and try typing again on the new
popup.

[Bug 1923646] [NEW] A prompt for a sudo password isn't always required

2021-04-13 Thread Garrett Thompson
Public bug reported:

When generating a report on a remote host, sosreport will prompt for a
password if a non-root user is provided.

In my case, the user being provided does not require a password for
running sudo commands, and so a fake password needs to be entered here.
Can a check be introduced so that the sudo command is only requested if
it's needed?

The command for reference:

$ sos collect --all-logs --clean --nodes $node --ssh-user $user --debug
--ssh-key /home/$user/.ssh/id_rsa

sos-collector (version 4.1)

This utility is used to collect sosreports from multiple nodes simultaneously.
It uses OpenSSH's ControlPersist feature to connect to nodes and run commands
remotely. If your system installation of OpenSSH is older than 5.6, please
upgrade.

An archive of sosreport tarballs collected from the nodes will be generated in
/tmp/sos.0b5dt5gj and may be provided to an appropriate support representative.

The generated archive may contain data considered sensitive and its content
should be reviewed by the originating organization before being passed to any
third party.

No configuration changes will be made to the system running this utility or
remote systems that it connects to.

Press ENTER to continue, or CTRL-C to quit

Please enter the case id you are collecting reports for: 12345
sos-collector ASSUMES that SSH keys are installed on all nodes unless the
--password option is provided.

A non-root user has been provided. Provide sudo password for ubuntu on

Also, this host is running Ubuntu 20.04.2 (from cat/etc/os-release), and
here's verification of the current sosreport version:

[Bug 1850702] Re: [Samsung Notebook 7 Pro, Realtek ALC256, headphone jack] Headphone sound is faint and distorted (but works fine in Windows)

2020-02-05 Thread Filipe Garrett
An update: testing some more, I can confirm that there were improvements on
volume, now it is definetely louder: if it weren't the buzzing effect on the
sound, I could say it was fixed. On the other hand, the louder it gets the more
noticeable the distortion became.

Oh, and I noticed that both of the new kernels are throwing some acpi related
errors on boot and on shutdown. I didn't really look that much about them
online - so I don't really know if they are serious or not - but as far as I
can tell, everything else that was working on the laptop remains so.

I redownloaded and reinstalled the 5.5.2 and saw some errors related to
Nvidia drivers on install as well. But as I'm runnnig it with integrated
graphics, I can't say if there's problem awaiting me as soon as I jump
to the dedicated graphics.

[Bug 1854982] Re: Lost compatibilty for backup between Ubuntu 19.10 and FreeBSD 12.0

2020-01-30 Thread Garrett Fields
BertN45,

Thanks for the continued followup. Most of these ZFS variants run test
suites to ensure that new code has a limited ability to create
additional issues. I would expect that cross OS compatibility is not
heavily tested (if at all). You were in a position to witness this
problem, took effort to report, and did some preliminary followup tests.
All these helped tremendously.

Ubuntu uses code from the ZFS on Linux project. Ubuntu has chosen
certain ways to use the ZOL code that fits their needs. Ubuntu's
choices are reasonable, and should work. I'm glad to see the FreeBSD
bug report. This is likely the first time they are being made aware of
the situation. As far as I know, the ZOL project is yet to know of the
issue.

With this report filed with one of the two organizations that actually
develop the code involved, an investigation can ensue. At this point,
others can attempt to reproduce what you have detailed.

Thanks again for staying involved. Feel free to monitor and contribute
to the issues as others continue to investigate.

[Bug 1854982] Re: Lost compatibilty for backup between Ubuntu 19.10 and FreeBSD 12.0

2020-01-28 Thread Garrett Fields
So these pools were created with the Ubuntu Ubiquity ZFS installer? I
missed that because the pool names are hardcoded to bpool and rpool and
your message lists 'dpool/dummy' and 'zroot/hp-data/dummy'

Also, in the linked email thread, you stated "The ZFS manual advised
auto, if also using xattr=sa, so that is why I used auto for my own
datapools/datasets."

Now the origin of the pool is clearer to me. Yes I do see -O
dnodesize=auto being set on (and inherited from) rpool in Ubiquity root
zfs installation. This would impact the ease of sending to non-
large_dnode pools (or in your case FreeBSD with large_dnode problems).

Some simple tests to run:
Within FreeBSD, I'd be really surprised if large_dnode=active to
large_dnode=enabled/active zfs send/recv doesn't work, but I'd start there.

Next, I'd try to send from FreeBSD large_dnode=active to Linux
large_dnode=enabled/active. If it fails, what error is returned?

Also, like rlaager stated, we should do the original Linux
large_dnode=active to FreeBSD large_dnode=enabled/active that gave you
problems. This all will give us evidence for bug reports in FreeBSD
and/or ZOL upstreams.

I'm on a mobile device, so can build examples, if requested, at a later

[Bug 1850702] Re: [Samsung Notebook 7 Pro, Realtek ALC256, headphone jack] Headphone sound is faint and distorted (but works fine in Windows)

2019-10-31 Thread Filipe Garrett
I don't know if my problem is related specifically to the Realtek AC256
codec. In any case, it seems FreeBSD folk fixed a while back the same
issue: no headphone output through some patches related to this codec on
some Dell models.

2019-10-31 Thread Filipe Garrett
Just to give more insight about this, I just tried a live USB with
18.04.03 and the results are similar: the sound is extremely low, but
with no distortion whatsoever.

apport information

** Attachment added: "WifiSyslog.txt"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1850702/+attachment/5301622/+files/WifiSyslog.txt

** Description changed:

  I can't get sound of my laptop (Samsung Notebook 7 Force) through the
  headphone jack. The speakers work fine.

  When I plug a headphone, I can hear the sound being played very faintly.
  If I bump the volume to the maximum, that is. The sound is very
  distorted, like a buzz effect being applied over it.

  I noticed that if I delete /.config/pulse the distortion goes away, but
  the sound remains very low. After some time, the buzzing effect comes
  back.

After some time, the buzzing effect comes
  back.

Yes, I'm on a dual-boot setup.

I think it's also worth mentioning that I've tried Manjaro and
experienced the same problems.

[Bug 1850702] Re: [Samsung Notebook 7 Pro, Realtek ALC256, headphone jack] Headphone sound is faint and distorted

2019-10-30 Thread Filipe Garrett
First of all, thanks for replying!

I did this already when I noticed the problem a couple days ago with my
main pair and with some gaming gear to no avail. But, since you asked, I
did it again with all the wired headphones I could find around, even
some crappy cellphone headphones and the results are the same: extremely
low sound and heavily distorted. I even tried with a P2 cable extender
and the problem remains, I'm 100% sure that it isn't my headphones.

Also tried all those headphones and cable extender on Windows and
everything works fine.

(all of them work perfectly on other devices running Android, on my PS4
through the DualShock jack and with my smart TV)

It's important to point out that I know of at least another user of this
machine facing the same issue. He posted about HDMI output problems -
that I can confirm on my laptop as well - on the Linux Mint (link down
below) forums and I got in touch with him, so I don't think that this
has something to do with the physical connection, specially since the
distortion goes away for a bit if you delete the /.config/pulse
directory.

I didn't file a bug report about the HDMI output because it isn't as important
as the headphone output for my workflow.

[Bug 1850702] [NEW] No sound output with headphones

2019-10-30 Thread Filipe Garrett
Public bug reported:

I can't get sound of my laptop (Samsung Notebook 7 Force) through the
headphone jack. The speakers work fine.

When I plug a headphone, I can hear the sound being played very faintly.
If I bump the volume to the maximum, that is. The sound is very
distorted, like a buzz effect being applied over it.

I noticed that if I delete /.config/pulse the distortion goes away, but
the sound remains very low. After some time, the buzzing effect comes
back.

[Bug 1834566] Re: Samsung Notebook 9 Pro - Internal Speaker Playback problem - HDA Intel - Realtek ALC298

2019-10-29 Thread Filipe Garrett
Here to also report that this issue persists on a newer Samsung laptop.
The model in question is the Notebook 7 Force NP760XBE(Style S51 Pro on
some countries) running 19.10. In my case, the speakers work fine,
though. The problem only manifests itself through headphones: very faint
and distorted sound.

I've reported it everywhere support-wise and posted it as a question here, on
Launchpad:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/685478

My alsa-info output file could be found here: http://alsa-

[Bug 1843507] Re: apt-get update to latest libidn2.so.0 causes multiple application failures including apt-update

2019-09-15 Thread Garrett Leyenaar
This temporary workaround worked for me:

$ wget
http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/libi/libidn2/libidn2-0_2.0.4-1.1build2_amd64.deb
$ sudo dpkg -i libidn2-0_2.0.4-1.1build2_amd64.deb
$ sudo apt-mark hold libidn2-0

With that said, I want to avoid problems in the future so at what point
should I remove the hold on libidn2-0? I host a few websites so anything
that messes up PHP brings down all my websites. Should I downgrade back
PHP 7.2 (Ubuntu 18 default) and remove the Ondrej ppa?

[Bug 1761619] [NEW] eventfd / poll interaction bug

2018-04-05 Thread Garrett D'Amore
Public bug reported:

In 17.10, I'm running into a new problem. This didn't happen to me on
16.04.

I have some code that uses eventfds to signal things, and the code is
not working -- after writing the eventfd, it does not come back readable
from another thread using poll().

Here's a snippet from strace:

```
eventfd2(0, 0)  = 5
fstat(1, {st_mode=S_IFCHR|0620, st_rdev=makedev(136, 1), ...}) = 0
write(1, "OPEN FD 5\n", 10OPEN FD 5
) = 10
write(5, "\1\0\0\0\0\0\0\0", 8) = 8
nanosleep({tv_sec=0, tv_nsec=1}, 0x7fffd0cea1a0) = 0
poll([{fd=5, events=POLLRDNORM}], 1, 100) = 0 (Timeout)
```

The write(1,... ) is debugging output. The nanosleep was intended to
see if sleeping a bit before polling would help. Note that the write(5,
...) and the poll() come from different threads.

Note that using two descriptors from a pipe() (which I do for other
platforms) is fine, so this is some kind of issue specific to eventfd.

Also, trying to reproduce this with a simpler single threaded program
did not succeed. I'm wondering if there is some underlying cache
synchronization problem?

I'm testing this in a VMware Fusion virtual machine (Fusion 10.1.1)
running on 2017 macbook pro (underlying OS is macOS 10.13).

For now I'm going to switch back to pipes, since eventfd() seems
unreliable -- if you can spot anything obviously wrong about the system
call sequence above, I'd love to hear it.

[Bug 1579918] Re: Smart Card Reader BCM 5880 with kernel 4.2

2016-10-31 Thread Garrett Warnell
This bug also affects me. Machine that "works" is a Dell Precision
M6800 with BCM5880 smart card reader. Machine that doesn't "work" is
Dell Precision 7710 with same reader. Same kernel version (4.4), same
middleware, but the 7710 can't read the certificates from an inserted
smart card.

The relevant difference appears to be that the M6800 has a Broadwell
processor while the 7710 has Skylake.

trousers_0.3.7-2ubuntu1.1 in precise-updates fails to configure if it's
being installed into a chroot environment which doesn't have a udev
socket. The udevadm commands return an error code, and postinst exits
because it's set -e. These commands shouldn't be fatal during
configuration - please add || true guards to prevent the problem.

[Bug 1095182] Re: Failed upgrade from 11.10 (Oneiric) to 12.04 (Precise)

2013-01-02 Thread Garrett W.
I've come across lots of other stories of people having trouble making
this upgrade, and I also read that the only way to skip this upgrade is
to start with the previous LTS release, 10.04. So I'm installing that
version now and will attempt to make the jump from there.

[Bug 1012178] [NEW] cronolog fails to keep symlink to newest log updated if previous link target is moved (patch included)

2012-06-12 Thread Garrett Kuchta
Public bug reported:

Cronlog, when used with -S/-l or -P, fails to maintain a symlink to the
newest logfile if the previous link target is moved.

Consider a case where Apache writing out to cronolog:

CustomLog "|/usr/sbin/cronolog -S /foo/access_log
/foo/%Y/%m/%d/access_log"

Now, if no one hits that site for a day or so, and your out-of-band log
archiving processes go and compress the old log files, the symlink's
broken; cronolog will subsequently fail to re-link /foo/access_log,
though logs WILL be written to /foo/%Y/%m/%d

Ultimately, this boils down to cronolog calling stat() against the
symlink; stat() will return -1 on the broken link and skip the unlink()
code; cronolog should be calling lstat().

Here's an example:

gkuchta@ve:~/dev/cronolog$ mkdir -p 2012/06/11
gkuchta@ve:~/dev/cronolog$ echo "foo" > 2012/06/11/access_log

/home/gkuchta/dev/cronolog/access_log
/home/gkuchta/dev/cronolog/%Y/%m/%d/access_log
gkuchta@ve:~/dev/cronolog$ cat access_log
cat: access_log: No such file or directory
gkuchta@ve:~/dev/cronolog$ ls -l
total 4
drwxr-xr-x 3 gkuchta gkuchta 4096 2012-06-12 13:37 2012
lrwxrwxrwx 1 gkuchta gkuchta   21 2012-06-12 13:37 access_log ->

If we catch the error from symlink() we see what's happening.

Here's what I believe to be the appropriate behavior. While digging
around for where to submit this patch, it looks like someone else
submitted something similar about 4 years ago, but the cronolog mailing
list is dead and the maintainer seems AWOL.

Anyhow, thanks for the consideration.

[Bug 994690] Re: Launcher tooltip says "Waiting to install" but the application is already installed.

2012-05-04 Thread Garrett
So, after rebooting, the mouse over displayed the proper name, but the
launcher icon was a question mark, so I replaced it with the application
from /usr/share/applications. Still unsure why it happened though.
