[Bug 1547119] Re: Progress Bars are White On Orange

2016-05-15 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
This seems to be a duplicate of #1052936.

In any case, I'm seeing this bug too on a fresh Ubuntu 16.04 install.
It's even worse in some apps (e.g. System Monitor) where you can select
a row with a progress bar. Then the progress bar text will become white,
and you have white text on a white background.

[Bug 882307] Re: [list-view] After copying text from a rename entry, file copy menus items are broken

2014-07-26 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
Well, I managed to get the nautilus source code to compile and do some
more testing. It is a bit hard to figure out the code when you're not
familiar with it though, especially the way renaming in list view is
implemented (the developers even call it a HACK in a comment in
nautilus-view.c line 1758)

At first I thought that when pressing Escape while renaming, there might
be missing a call to a cleanup method. But unfortunately it was not that
simple. A call to cell_renderer_editing_canceled is done, which seems
like it should put back nautilus in a normal state.

I did find out that the pressing of Escape is not actually what triggers
the problem directly. If you select a file and press F2, then press
Escape (so without Ctrl-C), then press F2 again, that last F2 will also
trigger the bug. After that you can stop editing using Enter, and
Copy/Paste in nautilus wil still be broken. So pressing Ctrl-C while
renaming the file is not even necessary to trigger the bug.

Just like Francisco Franchetti says above, when the bug triggers I see:

Gtk-WARNING **: Inserting action group 'ClipboardActions' into UI
manager which already has a group with this name

And when I try to paste a file after that:

Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_get_clipboard: assertion 'gtk_widget_has_screen
(widget)' failed
Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_clipboard_request_text: assertion 'clipboard != NULL'
failed

So yeah, that's all I have for now. Maybe I can look further later. If
someone has any tips on where to look and which lines of code to debug
I'd be glad to hear it.

[Bug 882307] Re: [list-view] After copying text from a rename entry, file copy menus items are broken

2014-05-17 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
I don't have time to setup a dev environment and compile and test
nautilus, but I did browse the source code a bit to narrow down the
problem.

So I looked in the file nautilus-list-view.c [1] and found there are
different ways to end a renaming action. Turns out, this bug only
happens in one specific case. After pressing F2 and Ctrl-C, you can:

* Press enter to actually rename the file: works.
* Clear the file name and press enter, so the original file name is restored:
works.
* Don't change the file name and press enter: works.
* Clicking on an empty part of the window to stop editing: works.
* Change directories while editing the file name: works.
* Press the Escape key to stop renaming: causes this bug!

So in short: this bug only happens if you use Escape to stop editing. My
guess is none of the cleanup-methods in nautilus-list-view.c are called
when you press Escape, leaving Nautilus in an invalid state. Hopefully
somebody with an already running nautilus dev environment can take a
closer look. Even though this bug is a bit rarer than I initially
thought, it's still a pretty breaking bug for the file manager of an LTS
release IMO.

[Bug 1038336] Re: Exract Here in thunar does nothing

2012-10-31 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
May be related to bug 978789. Someone on that bug page says it also
happens with PCManFM, so that would mean it's not a Thunar specific bug,
although I have not tested that myself.

I can say that installing file-roller 3.6.1.1-0ubuntu1 from the
proposed repository does not fix this bug.

[Bug 1038336] Re: Exract Here in thunar does nothing

2012-10-31 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
I did some more research. When you do Extract Here in Thunar, it uses
the following command to extract:

file-roller --extract-to=/home/example/foo/bar/ --extract-here --force
/home/example/foo/bar/test.zip

The problem is with the --extract-to option. If I remove that it works,
and any call to file-roller with --extract-to makes it crash.

If I look at file-roller's manpage, it does list --extract-to as a valid
option, so it really is a bug in file-roller.

[Bug 1038336] Re: Exract Here in thunar does nothing

2012-10-31 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
And here's a manual fix for Thunar users:

Optionally, first make a backup of the file we're about to edit:

# sudo cp /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/thunar-archive-plugin/file-
roller.tap /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/thunar-archive-plugin/file-
roller.backup

Now we edit the file file-roller.tap (which is where the command for
thunar-archive-plugin is stored) to remove the --extract-to option. The
command will still work because the --extract-here option remains:

# sudo sed 's/--extract-to=$(pwd) //' /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu
/thunar-archive-plugin/file-roller.tap | sudo tee /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-
gnu/thunar-archive-plugin/file-roller.temp /dev/null; sudo mv
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/thunar-archive-plugin/file-roller.temp
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/thunar-archive-plugin/file-roller.tap; sudo

[Bug 879981] Re: Theme not loaded sometimes

2012-01-21 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
I have this same bug regularly as well. Only Nautilus seems to suffer
from it though, I haven't seen this problem in other applications yet.

My guess would also be that this is not an NVIDIA specific problem, but
I could be wrong, I do use the NVIDIA graphics driver as well.

[Bug 600178] Re: Screen tearing when dragging window, in videos and other large screen redraws (on nVidia GPU)

2011-10-16 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
Same for me. It just seems that X.org in combination with any kind of
hardware acceleration and/or compositing will result in vsync problems,
at least on NVIDIA hardware.

I've been testing 11.10 with Unity, GNOME Shell and Xfce (with
compositing effects enabled), with different NVIDIA/X.org settings, but
I can never get rid of tearing. GNOME Shell does a pretty good job
actually, vsync is almost perfect, but there is still a little tearing
visible, for example when watching the test video in comment #38.

Here's hoping that Wayland will be the vsync miracle people are saying
it will be...

Sure, here's the output I get:

I guess I have to use sudo grep MXMS *? If I run that I get no output

[Bug 729280] Re: Totem's default subtitles fonts should be Ubuntu Bold

2011-09-20 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
Sometimes text based subtitles that were created using OCR get the
letters I and l mixed up. When you use a subtitle font where the I
and l look identical (like the current default Sans font), these kind
of errors are not an issue. However, if you use a font where the I and
l do not look identical (like the Ubuntu font), these kind of errors
will become visible. I therefore recommend not using the Ubunut font for
subtitles.

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2011-06-26 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
felix.rommel, the problem is not gone in Natty. The problem is only a
bit less bad, because all the indicators are grouped in one applet. But
the order of different applets still gets messed up sometimes.

The problem should be gone in Oneiric Ocelot though, because of the
upgrade to GNOME 3. I haven't tested it myself, but in the changelogs
they say that in gnome-panel 3 all the old annoying bugs of gnome-panel
2 have been fixed.

[Bug 600178] Re: Screen tearing when dragging window, in videos and other large screen redraws (on nVidia GPU)

2011-04-15 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
I did find one way to get vsync to work in Natty, but it involves
editing xorg.conf. I followed these instructions to disable composite
extension: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Composite

Of course if you do that then all desktop effects and Unity stop
working.

What is strange to me that disabling composite makes a difference when
using Metacity. I mean, in gconf I have the key
/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager set to False, so it
shouldn't be using compositing in the first place.

[Bug 600178] Re: Screen tearing when dragging window, in videos and other large screen redraws (on nVidia GPU)

2011-04-02 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
For me the situation in Natty got worse. On Maverick (and before) I
couldn't get vsync to work properly when using Compiz, but when using
Metacity vsync was fine. On Natty (beta) vsync doesn't work properly
with both Compiz and Metacity. So right now on Natty, no matter which
settings I use or what I do, I can't get full screen video to play
without screen tearing.

Using an Nvidia Geforce 9500 GT with the latest Nvidia drivers from the
Ubuntu repos.

[Bug 726902] Re: Loss of vsync when using Metacity.

2011-03-23 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
This probably isn't an Intel specific bug, because I'm on NVIDIA
graphics (proprietary drivers) and I'm having the same problem.

BTW, I've never been able to get vsyncing right with Compiz, but
Metacity has always worked perfectly for me (Maverick and before). With
Natty I can't get vsync to work on Metacity though. (Also still not on
Compiz, but that is not a regression)

paulpoco, what are you saying, that the Intel graphics chip isn't
working right for you either? Because for me when I don't install the
Nvidia drivers and stick with Intel graphics everything works fine,
including 3D acceleration.

But even if there are problems with the Intel driver, it is kind of off
topic for this bug, because jockey should still not recommend to install
the non-working Nvidia drivers.

[Bug 660443] [NEW] Recommended drivers don't work with Nvidia Optimus

2010-10-14 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
Public bug reported:

Nvidia's hybrid graphics technology Optimus (combines GeForce with an
Intel graphics chip) is currently not supported in the Nvidia Linux
drivers. When you install the drivers Ubuntu won't startup into graphics
mode anymore. If you don't install the Nvidia drivers Ubuntu just uses
the Intel graphics, and everything works fine.

The bug: when you install Ubuntu on a PC with Nvidia Optimus, jockey
recommends you install the (non-working) Nvidia drivers.

Solution: detect Optimus and only recommend the Nvidia drivers when it's
not present.

Tested on Ubuntu 10.10 final.

[Bug 434316] Re: Useless black bar in notification area visible

2010-05-10 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
This bug hasn't been fixed for me, on an up to date Ubuntu 10.04.

It is not an Empathy bug. Maybe Empathy was triggering the bug, but I do
not have Empathy installed on my system, and I still have this bug
happening. The only thing I have running in the Notification Area is the
NetworkManager Applet.

The black line appears at seemingly random times. Often it just flickers
a bit, appearing and disappearing right after. But right now I'm looking
at it just standing there. It doesn't disappear if I move the
Notification Area or click on the NetworkManager Applet or anything,
although it will probably be gone again if I reboot.

[Bug 396253] Re: Notifier: Missing launch feedback after clicking icon

2009-07-10 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
I don't think this is a specific problem of the package adept.

For me this happens with certain programs (I think all of them are non-
GTK+), like Open Office and VLC Media Player, that take a while to load.
When I double click a document or video file to open with these programs
I get no visual feedback whatsoever. Normally when I open a file I get
(at least) feedback in the form of a mouse cursor animation.

This results in people opening files twice, because they think the first
time didn't work. I have seen this happen to several people. They double
click a file, wait a second or so, see no feedback, so they double click
it again. Resulting in opening the file twice.

I guess the solution would be to always show the wait cursor animation
whenever any file or program is opened.

[Bug 120746] Re: nautilus open files twice

2008-02-02 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
This bug has not been fixed yet in Hardy (with Nautilus 2.21.90).

The way I reproduced the bug:

1) Start up the Hardy Alpha 4 Live CD
2) Install mplayer (a program that allows multiple instances)
3) Set Nautilus to List View
4) Open the Examples folder on the desktop
5) Set mplayer as the default player for ogg files (Right click Experience
ubuntu.ogg - Open with Other Application - Use a custom command - Type in
mplayer - Open)
6) Close mplayer
7) Double click Experience ubuntu.ogg (it opens automatically with mplayer
this time)
8) Repeat steps 6 and 7, after a couple of times you will get 2 instances of
mplayer after double clicking only once

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2007-06-16 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
I would like to confirm this bug.

My normal desktop resolution is 1280x1024. When I use my TV-Out I switch
to 1024x768. Changing the resolution does not affect the order of the
items on my panels immediately. But, if I changed the resolution at
least once, then after a reboot the order of items on the right side of
my panels have changed. This does not happen if I reboot after a session
during which I did not change the resolution.

Also, it happens both when I use xrandr and when I use the gnome-
display-properties GUI to change the resolution.

I'm using an up to date Ubuntu 7.04.

[Bug 111041] Corner pixels of ubuntu-splash.png should be transparent

2007-04-29 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: feisty-session-splashes

The default Ubuntu splash screen in Feisty has rounded corners, so the
pixels in the corners of the png file should be transparent. Currently
they are not. This is not noticeable with the default background color,
but if you change it (in System - Administration - Login Window -
Local, for example to black) you'll notice the non-transparent pixels.

Can be fixed by changing the pixels in the corner of
/usr/share/pixmaps/splash/ubuntu-splash.png (which is actually a link to
ubuntu-slick.png in the same directory) from the default brown
background color to transparent pixels.

** Affects: feisty-session-splashes (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed

[Bug 85820] Re: Resolution of the screen changes when use Totem player

2007-03-06 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
I can confirm this bug. I have a 1280x1024 LCD monitor, but I set
everything to 1024x768 when using my TV-out. Then when I switch Totem to
full screen the resolution is changed back to 1280x1024, resulting in
not having full screen video on my TV.

Using up to date Feisty Herd 5.
