[Bug 345126] Re: Installer creates too small swap partition (hibernation fails)

2010-11-13 Thread George Dhoore
Removing hibernate altogether just seems like throwing the baby out with
the bathwater, if I may use such a cliché phrase. This bug doesn't seem
like something that would take a major re-engineering effort to fix,
though to be honest my knowledge of such things is low.

My vote, for what its worth, would be to fix the autopartitioner logic
unless something else comes up that makes hibernate nonfunctional for
the majority of users.

[Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information

2009-05-01 Thread George Dhoore
Changing the way users are notified of important information is a noble
and worthwhile goal. I agree that a tiny icon can not convey much
useful information to the users. On the other hand, notifying users of
something with a pop-under window is far from ideal. Applications
should not run unless I ask one too. This update was premature without
a better way to notify users already in place.

The fix then, is to improve the way users are notified by applications or the
OS. This will require several things in order to improve on both the old icon
notification behavior and the current opening of an unrequested application
behavior.
1. It must convey more information than an icon can provide.
2. It must be persistent if need be.
3. It must not open an additional application or otherwise forcibly
interrupt a user's work.

I see two fixes for this.
1. An application that gathers notifications from other applications. It
pops up in the current notification area and lets you know that other
applications or the OS wishes to let you know something. When clicked upon it
gives a list of current applications with notifications. Clicking then on the
application in the list will give you a detailed and verbose message. The
computer needs to be rebooted after those last updates. Firefox must be
restarted There are 12 new updates available, 3 of which are critical
security fixes. etc.

The problem with this approach is we again have to convey to the users
via an icon that this is something they should click on for more
information. This can be worked around perhaps with libnotify popping
up briefly and telling a user that they should click on the icon for
more information. Eventually a user would be at the computer for one of
these and notice it and learn what the icon means. Also, each
application would have to be changed to work with this new system.

2. A portion of the desktop be reserved for such notifications. No
icons would be able to be dragged into this location and accidentally
cover it up for instance. (Say a 'sidebar' location on the right hand
side of the screen). In this 'sidebar' would be a list of recent
messages from the applications or OS to which the user should be
notified. It should have enough room for a basic message Updates
available, Please restart computer, etc and a way to click on this
new 'sidebar' to have the appropriate application either run or move to
the front of the screen and acquire user focus.

The problem with this approach is that its completely new to everyone
and would possibly take substantial coding effort just to get the
framework running and more to convert each application to it. It would
also be hidden from users who have a window blocking that portion of
their desktop. This at least could again be worked around with a brief
libnotify message. If they miss it, they'll certainly see it when they
close their last window and are prepared to do something else, or stop
using the computer entirely. (or on next boot before working)

Both of these solutions would require a not insignificant amount of work but
would go a long way to solving the original problem that started this whole
mess - That the notification area can't really notify of much. I'd love to see
a fix make it in time for Karmic, either one of these or some other better
approach.

[Bug 252335] Re: [Packaging Request] Upgrade to PulseAudio 0.9.12 in Intrepid

2008-10-25 Thread George Dhoore
The suggestion to alter two settings in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf, specifically:
default-fragments = 8
default-fragment-size-msec = 5
to fix the sporadic clicking and popping with very short sounds did not work.
The way I understand it, in the glitch-free pulseaudio's greater than 0.9.10
these settings among others are changed on the fly. I also did not notice this
problem in 0.9.12 which leads me to believe this may be some sort of regression.

It may be that some other setting could fix this, but I've not
encountered one. If this is indeed the case, the particular setting
should probably be set as default if/when it is known.

[Bug 252335] Re: [Packaging Request] Upgrade to PulseAudio 0.9.12 in Intrepid

2008-10-23 Thread George Dhoore
Using 0.9.13 from luke's PPA for just over a week now and it seems
stable. I've not noticed any crashes of pulseaudio or any crashes of
other programs that look like they could be blamed on it. Some notes:

Latency is way down in comparison to 0.9.10.
Short sounds (for example, pidgin sounds) often have clicks or pops again, like
in 0.9.10. This appeared to be fixed in 0.9.11 and 0.9.12.
Mixing is working perfectly again. This was broken for me in 0.9.12.
Unable to test the network features so I can't comment on them.

Overall, I don't see any regressions in 0.9.13 when comparing to 0.9.10.
If the clicking/popping issue gets fixed again, this would make linux
audio perfect for me.

[Bug 275672] [NEW] OpenJDK-6-jre freezes on simple midi app, sun JRE does not

2008-09-28 Thread George Dhoore
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openjdk-6-jre

Ubuntu Intrepid Alpha6 8.10 updated as of Sunday, September 28th
OpenJDK version 6b12~pre1-0ubuntu3

When running a simple app that gets a Sequencer object and exits,
OpenJDK will create the object and not exit while sun-java6-jre (version
6-07-4ubuntu2) creates the object and properly exits. The proper
behavior is the one Sun's java exhibits.

Sample program (also attached):
import javax.sound.midi.*;

public class MusicTest1 {
public void play() {

try {
Sequencer sequencer = MidiSystem.getSequencer();
System.out.println(Successfully got a sequencer);
} catch(MidiUnavailableException ex) {
System.out.println(Bummer);
}
}

public static void main(String[] args) {
MusicTest1 mt = new MusicTest1();
mt.play();
System.out.println(After play);

2008-09-21 Thread George Dhoore
Public bug reported:

Attempting to connect to my access point on intrepid alpha 6 updated fully as
of September 21st, 2008 is very hit or miss. In one case, as long as the
wireless switch is on, dmesg is spammed with this series of messages multiple
times a minute:
[  341.455772] iwl3945: check assoc id 1 | 1

Other times I just get this in dmesg once per connect attempt:
[  279.741452] wlan0: Initial auth_alg=0
[  279.741452] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:18:f8:f9:53:ba

status=0 aid=2)
[  279.745188] wlan0: associated
[  288.521340] wlan0: disassociate(reason=3)

It seems that if I hit one of these two errors the only thing I can do
is to shut down the laptop, wait for a few minutes, and then try again.
As of right now, I can only connect about 20 percent of the time.
Eventually, even after successfully connecting, I'll lose the connection
and start getting one of those two errors in dmesg again. I am not
currently having this problem with the intrepid alpha 6 AMD64 live CD
run from a USB flash drive, but with the sporadic nature of this bug, I
could just be lucky.

Other information that may be relevant:
Access point is a wrt54gl running tomato firmware.
Encryption is WPA personal.
Laptop is an HP Pavilion DV2660se
Occurs in Intrepid Alpha 6 AMD64 updated as of September 21st 2008. May have
started before this. I just started testing Intrepid a few days ago.

[Bug 252335] Re: [Packaging Request] Upgrade to PulseAudio 0.9.12 in Intrepid

2008-09-20 Thread George Dhoore
The latest packages from Luke's PPA seem to work well for me. They appear to
resolve the random latency and crackling issues I had with pulseaudio in hardy.

CPU usage remains at about 2 percent while audio plays although running
pavucontrol boosts pulseaudio usage to 20 percent without audio playing and 30
percent with. No crackling or crashes noticed though.

I am unable to test the more advanced features like network audio or
seamless switching between sinks.

Since it seems highly unlikely that this will make it into intrepid,
perhaps this should eventually become a packaging request for Jaunty?

[Bug 252335] Re: [Packaging Request] Upgrade to PulseAudio 0.9.12 in Intrepid

2008-09-20 Thread George Dhoore
Okay, I have to edit my last statement. Suddenly I am now getting
crackling and pops with two audio streams playing at once. In this case
rhythmbox and pidgin playing sound at the same time. Reverting to
Intrepid's current pulseaudio resolved that issue.

The only thing relevant (I think) I changed between working perfectly and the
crackling was editing my asound.conf to read:
pcm.pulse {
type pulse
}
ctl.pulse {
type pulse
}
pcm.!default {
type pulse
}
ctl.!default {
type pulse
}

This was required to get audio working with flashplugin-nonfree.

[Bug 252335] Re: [Packaging Request] Upgrade to PulseAudio 0.9.12 in Intrepid

2008-09-11 Thread George Dhoore
If 0.9.12 ends up not being stable enough for the majority of users to
make it into intrepid as the default, would it be possible to have a
'pulseaudio_0-9-12' package included in the repos that conflicts
with/replaces the original files? That way everyone has a mostly stable
default, while those 'bleeding edge' types that the newer version works
for can easily replace the default.

Would this be infeasible or too much work? Or just a plain bad idea
period? I don't pretend to know all the details of the packaging system
and rules to get stuff in the repositories.

crashes displaying just:
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Running firefox in safe mode does the same, after continuing at the safe-mode
dialog.
Firefox -ProfileManager runs, but running a new profile still causes crashes -
as does deleting the whole ~/.mozilla directory.

In creating a gdb log as spelled out at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs; I encountered an error with gdb
itself saying:
/build/buildd/gdb-6.6.dfsg/gdb/linux-nat.c:2389: internal-error:
linux_nat_thread_alive: Assertion `is_lwp (ptid)' failed.
A problem internal to GDB has been detected,
further debugging may prove unreliable.
Quit this debugging session? (y or n)
after running thread apply all backtrace full in gdb.

As of a recent update (which did not seem to be in regards to firefox),
this is no longer an issue. Firefox now runs normally.

For some reason, links are being setup recursively and thus causing the package
to not work properly. After checking the actual .deb file, it appears to me
that the proper files are included. I do not know enough, however, to explain
why they aren't being copied to the correct places.
