[Bug 876379] [NEW] Unable to upgrade to 11.10 using kpackagekit because a package is marked as downgrade

2011-10-17 Thread Gobnuts
Public bug reported:

When I tried to upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 through kpackagekit, the I received
the error message
Process exited with code 1.

Michael Vogt (mvo) advised me to file a new bug here
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/873411
saying that my error stems from a package that is marked as downgrade.

Thinking about his comment I realized that I do have such a package. I
installed the clementine audio-player from their bleeding-edge repository
http://ppa.launchpad.net/me-davidsansome/clementine-dev/ubuntu/
Clementine is also packaged in the official Kubuntu repos. It is an older
version than the bleeding edge one but it gets listed as newer, thus the
downgrade, I think.

I could try to uninstall clementine and do the dist-upgrade after that
if you want me to. For now, I'll wait until I get a response here.

There is no preferences file in /etc/apt/ but one in
/etc/apt/preferences.d/ which I attached here.

Occured after the update to KDE4.4 from Kubuntu backports on

I asked Ivan (the creator) on identica about the black border around lancelot

[Bug 349229] Re: [RV350] system freeze randomly, need hard reset

2009-07-26 Thread Gobnuts
Thanks Raphael

It's weird. I tried a modified xorg.conf with just the AccelMethod
XAA and that ran as crappily as before (20-50% cpu time for X).

I decided trying to re-install vanilla Jaunty (quite radical solution,
but I figured I might have some crap installed I didn't remember and
wanted to exclude that).

The only alteration to xorg I have right now is: Driver radeon
I can live without compositing, but it still bugs the hell out of me, what the
high cpu usage of X was.

Here's hoping that someday compositing on R300/R350 chipsets will work
again sometime, I know it did under intrepid.

2009-07-25 Thread Gobnuts
@Raphael

Is your system running fine now? And could you perhaps post the contents
of your xorg.conf ?

I've got the same video card, running Kubuntu jaunty with latest updates
and experience these freezes all the time. Even when idle, the Xorg uses
20-50% of cpu time. And all of this without running compositing.

I can also confirm that this didn't happen with Intrepid. Everything ran
smoothly _with_ compositing.

[Bug 289264] Re: Memory leak in update-notifier-kde

2009-07-07 Thread Gobnuts
I experience the same problem on Jaunty with KDE 4.3RC1.
running apt-get update and apt-get upgrade twice makes update-notifier-kde rack
up around 200 MB of Ram (everytime I run it, update... takes in a few more MBs.
Also for a couple of minutes it insane amounts of CPU time (in the high 70s to
80s initially, the between 20 and 50% for another couple of minutes).

Now, on my main machine it not that big of a deal, but on weaker machines this
is really annoying as this almost causes the system to come to a grinding
halt.
If there is a fix out for karmic already it would be nice to have this
backported to Jaunty.

Happens to me as well. In Intrepid everything was fine, Jaunty has this
annoying behaviour.
I am experiencing this on two machines, on with an Ati and one with a nVidia

I am thinking, it might have something to do with Power Devil, which was newly
introduced and replaced kde-guidance-powermanager.
The problem is, that I can't tell PowerDevil to make an exception for Kaffeine,
as guidance used to.

After the bootup with the live CD, the Desktop ran without compositing enabled.

As soon as I enabled the compositing effects, the screen froze with the mouse
moving jerkily.

2009-04-20 Thread Gobnuts
I can confirm this behaviour, system locks up or screen goes completely dark
with a hard reset as the only option left.
This is on a Laptop with an Ati Radeon 9600 Mobility M10 (RV350) card using the
radeon driver and kwin's compositing effects enabled.

The lock-ups occur when opening random applications, so far it happened
to me while opening kwallet, login-manager, kate, kpackagekit and
others.

Also, X sometimes uses up to 50% of the cpu-time.
