[Bug 1354924] Re: Networkmanager does not autoconnect to wireless network

2014-11-17 Thread Hervé Fache
Søren, Denis,

Apparently, the KDE guys who worked on plasma-nm consider the bug to be
somewhere else in the stack, maybe in network manager. Has one of you
got a Ubuntu 14.10 to test this? If it works with Unity, then we know
it's KDE-related.

Maybe this can be tested using a Live USB key:
* make key for Ubuntu 14.10
* setup WiFi
* put in standby
* resume
- does it auto-reconnect?

Then do the same for Kubuntu 14.10...

I am sorry I don't have enough time right now to do it myself :-(

BTW, if it works in both cases, then it may be an upgrade issue and we
would have to compare the config files between the Live and failing
systems around network manager/network.

Thanks!

[Bug 1354924] Re: Networkmanager does not autoconnect to wireless network

2014-11-08 Thread Hervé Fache
ROTFL

So we have a *release* of what is meant to be one of the most
important/mainstream distributions where the network management is
broken, and this is *Medium*!?!

Are you kidding me? No wonder why my colleagues always have a stock of
jokes about Linux for me.

This is not serious. This should be one of the first tests to be run:
does the network manager actually manage the network? And from what I
see, this was reported 2 months before the release...

[Bug 1354924] Re: Networkmanager does not autoconnect to wireless network

2014-11-08 Thread Hervé Fache
I have rolled back the following packages to their trusty versions, to no avail:
* network-manager
* plasma-widget-networkmanagement
* plasma-nm (needs an extra dependency)
* wpasupplicant

I suppose something is meant to trigger the connection when the user
logs in, which I wrongly thought was the startup of the plasma-nm
widget. I suppose I need to talk to the KDE guys directly if I want to
help more...

[Bug 1047688] Re: Boot fails on udev if USB devices are present

2012-10-08 Thread Hervé Fache
I have a similar (same?) issue on two of my computers upgraded from
precise. Two others are ok. And booting from a USB key of a daily works:
it's only 50% of my _upgraded_ systems that fail.

Their hardwares are very different: one is a Dell laptop, heavily Intel-
based and the other a HP Microserver which is AMD-based.

If I chmod 644 udevd, the laptop does not crash, hence my search for
udev-related hangs in quantal. The server does not completely crash, as
hard-disk activity is visible if I connect a USB stick for example. So
the behaviours vary slightly.

Also, I use these systems everyday just by booting from the 3.2 kernel
from their precise past...

Ah, and removing all USB devices did not help the server in my case
(laptop not tried.)

2012-07-16 Thread Hervé Fache
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1014139 ***

This is still the case in precise and is in fact a double bug: not only
is the partition not unmounted on failure, but would the user try again
it is mounted again, which could lead to data loss.

The script should first test whether the partition is mounted (and find
out where) before trying to mount it. If already mounted, then you need
to block it mounted during the update (cd /mount/point comes to mind.)

I can see no activity on this bug, but indeed the bug provided in

I have the OpenSuSE driver which I recompile after every kernel update,

support (mac80211) at all :-(

I hope Precise's kernel driver will work better... Any backport yet?

[Bug 598636] [NEW] broken --remove-files in tar-1.23, Cannot rmdir: Directory not empty

2010-06-25 Thread Hervé Fache
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tar

I have the same issue on Maverick:

It seems tar now forgets to remove the symbolic link 'link space' that

 Hi Hervé,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
 http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and
attach updated debug information to this report.

 apport-collect -p linux 482699

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be
great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
  Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've
tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag.
This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag

[Bug 482699] [NEW] eSATA expressCard not detected when system started

2009-11-14 Thread Hervé Fache
Public bug reported:

I just bought en expressCard eSATA card with a JMicron JMB36x chip on
it. This card was not hot detected, and if plugged before kernel boot
the card would appear in lspci but the hard disk connected to it would
not get detected.

I found a thread where Greg K-H suggested to load the pciehp or acpiphp
module. pciehp is not present as a module (is it compiled in?), but
acpiphp did the trick. I have now added it to /etc/modules.

I therefore suggest this module gets added to /etc/modules on a default
install, as a 'normal' user might have struggled quite a lot!

Re: [Bug 407428]

2009-08-05 Thread Hervé Fache
I don't think the Ctrl-C handling is due to ssh, more like some tty or shell
option of some sort. Bash _does_ print ^C when I press Ctrl-C but nothing
else happens (no interrupt signal sent).

There probably are two bugs here:
* ssh hangs/creates zombies
* bash does not propagate signals (interactive mode broken?)

[Bug 407428] Re: sshd zombie processes and strange behavior after karmic upgrade

2009-08-02 Thread Hervé Fache
Most of my computers have been upgraded from earlier versions. The only one
showing this behaviour is my server which was initially installed with 6.06.
Issues are the same as reported:
* Ctrl-C and Ctrl-Z do not work
* login takes time
* logout hangs until I kill it with '~.'
* loads of zombie processes

About the systems:
* both systems are up-to-date karmic.
* sshd_config is almost the same as on my laptop (only authorized users differ).
* sshd and all its shared libs are identical on both systems.
* .bashrc and .bash_logout are the same on both systems
* .bash_profile was only present on the server, but removing it does not change
the Ctrl-C behaviour

If I ssh to my server and then from there ssh back to my laptop, Ctrl-C works...
I'll keep looking!

2009-04-13 Thread Hervé Fache
I am surprised nobody released a fix, it would have taken about an hour
I suppose... Never mind.

You can try the installing the package from Ubuntu 9.04:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/i386/libexiv2-5/download

The dependencies look okay, but I did not try it (all my computers are
running 9.04 Beta).

Good luck!

Re: [Bug 268502] Re: Bluetooth association no longer works

2009-01-23 Thread Hervé Fache
I am not a developer, but I can assure you this is being worked on: the
bluetooth support lib (bluez) has been updated in a way which is not
backwards-compatible with the existing stuff (v4). All distributions are
affected, this is not Ubuntu-specific in any way.

KDE has recently been updated to support it and Kubuntu packages should soon
appear with the fix integrated. If Jaunty still had no support and Fedora 11
had, I think a lot of people would choose the latter...

[Bug 238469] Re: valgrind reports errors in libc 2.8.90

2009-01-20 Thread Hervé Fache
I get loads of these in my Valgrind regression test since upgrading to
Jaunty:

Conditional jump or move depends on uninitialised value(s)
   _dl_relocate_object (in /lib/ld-2.9.so)
   dl_main (in /lib/ld-2.9.so)
   _dl_sysdep_start (in /lib/ld-2.9.so)
   _dl_start (in /lib/ld-2.9.so)
   (within /lib/ld-2.9.so)

This is either Valgrind that needs updating (as for libc 2.8) or the libc
that's got a problem...

Either way, this is really annoying as I cannot see the tree for the
forest.

2009-01-04 Thread Hervé Fache
Looks like (but didn't check properly) we may be missing the 0.17.1 bugfix
which fixes that...
Hardy was using 0.16 which worked ok.

2009-01-04 Thread Hervé Fache
Confirmed.

I installed the package from Jaunty (not broken dep) and it now work
correctly.

I therefore strongly suggest back-porting the libexiv2 package from
Jaunty.

[Bug 289264] Re: Memory leak in update-notifier-kde

2008-12-03 Thread Hervé Fache
I did not look at the startup memory usage, but found this bug when
trying to report this program is (after plasma) the greediest on my
system:

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND
21946 herve 20 0 135m 66m 18m S0 6.6 16:28.16 /usr/binplasma
21995 herve 39 19 116m 51m 19m S0 5.1 0:35.93 python
/usr/bin/update-notifier-kde

I think 51 MB of residual memory is a tad too much for an applet...

[Bug 286860] [NEW] Gwenview does not free memory when saving rotated images, crashes

2008-10-21 Thread Hervé Fache
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gwenview

I process a number of images, and have to rotate some.
Rotating and image of 2MB seems to take around 27MB of memory, which does not
get freed after saving the rotated image.
Obviously, when the memory used reaches the avaialble on my computer, Gwenview
crashes.

This is KDE4 / Kubuntu 8.10 Beta

rmmod'd all modules down to usbcore, then modprobe'd uhci_hcd and it

[Bug 277263] [NEW] kate does not use the previous file directory in the save as dialog

2008-10-02 Thread Hervé Fache
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kate

lsb_release -rd: Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
apt-cache policy kate: 4:4.1.2-0ubuntu1 0

In KDE3, if you were looking at /my/path/to/a/file.txt and created a new
file, the save as dialog would be default use /my/path/to/a as current
directory, which was most handy.

Now this procedure does not work the first time (but works as usual
afterwards).

Procedure to reproduce it:
- File - Open: /my/path/to/a/file.txt
- File - New
- File - Save as: we are in $HOME/Documents, not /my/path/to/a !?!

2008-09-19 Thread Hervé Fache
Installing Kubuntu Intrepid alpha 6 now and this bug is still as present
as ever. The installation is slowed down by the time Ubiquity takes for
itself.

Examples:
- when entering user name, hence nothing happening
- when showing page 6, the installation details
- when creating FS's/copying files

[Bug 254933] Re: scandir on CIFS mounted directory returns incomplete list of entries

2008-08-31 Thread Hervé Fache
** Description changed:

My backup program backs up Windows machines by mounting the
  administrative shares.

On one machine, the one connected wirelessly, it sometimes sees a
  directory empty.

No error is reported, no message in the log, no errno set, nothing, just
the directory reported empty, a different one every time.

Googled for it and found nothing... don't know to which upstream to

[Bug 241209] [NEW] Want to use the autotools plugin

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eclipse-cdt

Hello,

As title says, I'd like to use the autotools plugin, but it seems not to work
with the current version of Eclipse/CDT in 8.04.
I can see in your changelog that you may package said plugin. Would that be
difficult for you?
Alternatively, could you patch the CDT plugin so the autotools plugin v0.0.9
works out of the box?

Thanks and regards,

Re: [Bug 202772] Re: Bug in ACPI at startup

2008-04-03 Thread Hervé Fache
Well, _that_ patch I have no problem testing: it just replaces a dump by a
message, and the ending result should be essentially the same: the ACPI
stack cannot deal with my (nVidia) video card (AIUI)...

If you send me something to test (kernel image, I suppose), I shall run it
ASAP and send you all the data you ask me for :)

[Bug 197394] Re: No audio in Hardy w/Intel ICH8, STAC9228

2008-03-29 Thread Hervé Fache
Make sure, if you have that the ouput 'Front' is enabled (check alsamixer if in
doubt).
On my computer, Front and Master seem to be both affected the volume,
headphones and speakers alike, and the headphones volume does nothing at all.
