[Bug 1937845] [NEW] Blank (blue) screen

2021-07-23 Thread Iiro Laiho
Public bug reported:

I installed package xrdp and task xubuntu-desktop in my Hetzner VPS with
Ubuntu. I can log in, but I will only see a screen with a blank (blue)
background instead of the desktop environment.

It seems to be an extremely widespread problem with many workarounds
available on the net. Please fix it so that it works without
workarounds.

[Bug 1800297] Re: localectl updates /etc/default/locale without root privileges

2019-02-03 Thread Iiro Laiho
This is a particularly confusing "feature" if user is using the LUKS
encryption. Then changing the keyboard layout via GNOME's settings will
also change the preboot environment's keyboard layout, but only after
the next kernel update. And if the user has enabled "org.gnome.desktop
.input-sources show-all-sources" and switched to one of those "extra"
layouts, it becomes even more confusing: the new layout is applied to
everywhere except GDM. See:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/issues/433

Chromium should just proceed launching instead of bothering user with

The last step in #109 is important. When doing the upgrade of cups-

2017-08-08 Thread Iiro Laiho
Nope, the problem is still present in -proposed. Here's a more detailed
procedure of reproducing the bug:

- Do a clean Ubuntu install. I installed Ubuntu from the 16.04.3 desktop media
to a VirtualBox VM.
- Do a "apt update && apt upgrade" as usual
- Per the instructions from ,
do what is told in the "Selective upgrading from -proposed" section.
- Add a stuck job to the CUPS queue. My way to do this is to add a network
printer with URI "socket://0.0.0.0". As the driver I used the "Generic PCL
Laser". Now, print a test page.
- Now we should be able to pinpoint the packages we want to upgrade to
-proposed. Run command "sudo apt -t xenial-proposed install cups-daemon"
- Now we have a broken packaging system. The command "sudo apt upgrade" will
fail.

@slashd, Maybe something has changed in systemd or something? I'll check

Did you make a clean install? How did you ensure that the job was stuck
in the queue? I remember that adding a socket:// printer with an invalid

[Bug 1642966] Re: package cups-daemon 2.1.3-4 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1

2017-04-14 Thread Iiro Laiho
The root cause of this problem is probably that the "invoke-rc.d cups
stop" command fails on Xenial if there are jobs in queue. The dpkg
preremoval script runs that command and thus the upgrade procedure
fails. In the newer Ubuntu versions the command executes flawlessly.

Until that problem is fixed in some way or another in Xenial, it isn't
probably possible at all to safely publish any updates to cups-daemon,
not even critical zero-day security patches.

2017-04-13 Thread Iiro Laiho
I have concluded that this problem only appears if the -proposed package
has never been installed AND cupsd is running.

So, the way to reproduce this is:

- Do a clean Ubuntu install
- Install updates
- Enable -proposed
- Make sure that cupsd is running
- Update cups-daemon.

When I do this, the CUPS service gets in a weird state in which it can't
be successfully stopped with systemctl nor invoke-rc.d. I have tried
reloading systemd configuration, stopping and disabling cups.path, but
the only thing that I have used with success to make the init system
function again is to manually run "killall cupsd".

till-kamppeter, what do you mean by "restarting systemd"? Does it mean
that we could try adding something like this to the postinstall script:

"if dpkg --compare-versions "$2" lt-nl "2.1.3-4ubuntu0.2"; then
systemctl daemon-reexec
fi"?

Does it belong inside of the "if [ "$1" = configure ]" condition or
outside?

[Bug 1664079] [NEW] StartupWMClass gets ignored for .desktop files that are not in "*/share/applications" directory

2017-02-12 Thread Iiro Laiho
Public bug reported:

The StartupWMClass gets ignored for .desktop files that are launched by
Nautilus from outside the "~/.local/share/applications" or
"/usr/share/applications" directories

Steps to reproduce:

1) Download Tor Browser from the developer website
2) Unpack and execute it

Result:

Tor Browser windows get categorized as "Firefox" windows.

Excepted result:

Tor browser windows should be categorized as a separate app.

Workaround:

Run "cp '/path/to/start-tor-browser.desktop'
~/.local/share/applications" to copy the .desktop file to a directory
from where Unity looks for it.

[Bug 1598300] Re: CUPS web interface stops responding after a while

2017-02-10 Thread Iiro Laiho
launchpad-groovix: I meant it's too late to do anything about that this
bug slipped into xenial in first place. Fixing the problem afterwards
however should be possible, if little more complicated, sorry for being
unclear. The #1642966 probably is fixable and there has been effort to
do that to the point there is a PPA that's supposed to contain the fix.
However, efforts to make it an official SRU seem to have been stalled
for since a month.

[Bug 1598300] Re: CUPS web interface stops responding after a while

2017-02-10 Thread Iiro Laiho
launchpad-groovix: Weird. This "feature" shouldn't be active at all when
printer sharing is enabled. Did you look the cups log to make sure that
it really is the same problem?

And yes, this is a serious issue, but if you read the earlier messages,
you see that the fix will cause the bug 1642966 that will result the
breakage of some systems. This really should have been fixed before the
release of 16.04 xenial (or the patch that caused this maybe shouldn't
have been written in first place since it AFAIK solved a thing that was
not really a problem), but it's now too late to do anything to the fact
that it was not and it's now difficult to fix it since breakage of
systems that have a LTS release installed should be avoided.

[Bug 769314] Re: System bell completely silent because PulseAudio sample file undefined by default

2017-02-03 Thread Iiro Laiho
** Tags added: xenial

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: unity

This bug is about problems using the system bell in Unity or another
Compiz-based environment. For problems using the system bell in Ubuntu
Classic/Metacity or another Metacity-based environment, please see bug
  #486154.

The system bell (that beep when you backspace on an empty line on a
terminal, i.e.) is badly broken using the Unity environment in the Natty
beta 2. By default, no sound is produced, and several misconfigurations
make it difficult to produce sound either from the PC speaker or Pulse
Audio's module-x11-bell. Not knowing what the desired behavior is, I
can't say exactly what needs to be fixed. But the combination of the
following issues makes the system quite obviously broken.

  1) pcskpr is blacklisted.
The pcspkr module is necessary for the PC speaker to produce sound. It is
blacklisted, so regular users cannot turn the bell on. It would be nice for
this to be fixed, but the attitudes displayed in #77010 suggest that it won't
be. Nonetheless, I note it here because it interacts with some of the
following.

- 2) The X bell volume is set to 0.
+ 2) The X bell volume is set to 0. (no more true in xenial)
As reported by `xset q`, the bell volume is 0 when Unity is started. Both
the PC speaker and module-x11-bell respect this setting, so the volume must be
turned up (with `xset b on` or `xset b 100`) for either to work. Since both
the PC speaker and module-x11-bell are disabled by default, this setting only
serves to frustrate attempts to turn them on; it never prevents unwanted sound.

  3) module-x11-bell is loaded by /usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x11
This is a system file, not a user file, so users cannot decide whether they
want this module loaded or not. They could write a script to unload the module
at login (and hope the module number doesn't vary between boots), but it would
be much cleaner to have the modules loaded from a user file, possibly with
defaults if the user file doesn't exist.

  4) Sample bell.ogg is not loaded.
When module-x11-bell is loaded, it is told to use the sample bell.ogg. But
no sample is loaded into Pulse Audio. Thus, module-x11-bell traps system bell
events (keeping them from going to the PC speaker) without producing any sound.
If module-x11-bell is loaded, the sample it calls on should be loaded as well.
(To fix this, run `pactl upload-sample
/usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/bell.ogg bell.ogg`.)

  5) gnome-volume-control doesn't.
The "Sound Effects" tab of gnome-volume-control offers to set the volume and
sound for system bell events, but these have no effect. This is because
gnome-volume-control is trying to control system bells through metacity.
Ideally, it should be rewritten to control module-x11-bell instead, but a
temporary fix could be to simply disable this tab.

  6) System bell settings don't transfer to the Ubuntu Classic environment.
Because that is using metacity, which has it's own set of problems. See bug
#486154.

This has been from testing in a VM (virtualbox), but all of these
behaviors have also been seen in Compiz in various previous versions of
  Ubuntu running on various hardware.

I have reported this bug against several components, as it is really an
integration issue. The eventual fix may not involve your component, but please
do not mark this bug as invalid until we have at least a roadmap for fixing it.
Otherwise, I fear responsibility will be passed from component to component
without anything being fixed. Rationales:
Unity - As the overarching environment, Unity should be responsible for
getting everything integrated. Additionally, some of the problems relate to
session startup settings.
Pulse Audio - module-x11-bell is not loaded intelligently or correctly.
  Gnome Media - Own gnome-volume-control.

Versions (but note the same behavior has been seen in many earlier versions):
  unity: 3.8.10-0ubuntu2
  pulseaudio: 1:0.9.22+stable-queue-24-g67d18-0ubuntu3
  gnome-media: 2.32.0-0ubuntu7

2017-02-03 Thread Iiro Laiho
Present in 16.04.

Is the silence of the X11 bell intentional behavior? This is a really
weird case. I mean, the bug has been open for longer than half a decade
and triaged for a couple of years as well. The fix also is very simple
and there are proposed patches.

[Bug 1645631] [NEW] Sending files fails because obex not loaded

2016-11-29 Thread Iiro Laiho
Public bug reported:

If I run bluetooth-sendto from command line and try to send the file, it
quits after selecting the target device with following command line
output:

"Acquiring proxy failed: Error calling StartServiceByName for
org.bluez.obex: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.systemd1.NoSuchUnit: Unit
dbus-org.bluez.obex.service not found."

After I run "systemctl --user start obex", it proceeds to send the file.
Even then it for some reason gets stuck, but I do not know what causes
it and it is probably a different problem.

This system is upgraded from xenial.

[Bug 1637461] [NEW] Backport fix of Debian #832637 to xenial, cups-browsed delays shutdown by connecting to localhost:631 while listening only to domain socket

2016-10-28 Thread Iiro Laiho
Public bug reported:

Please backport the fix of this Debian bug to Xenial.

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=832637

To quote from there:

"The problem is most probably caused by inconsistency in how cups-browsed
accesses the local CUPS daemon, for some accesses it uses the domain
socket (which made it mostly well working in your case) and at other
places, especially also during shutdown, it accesses localhost:631 (this
is why it hangs on shutdown), independent of configuration."

It is fixed in Debian's cups-filters/1.11.4-1.

This is NOT a duplicate to #1579905 as is noted in it's comments.

[Bug 1637429] Re: Should wait until time is synced, still uses legacy sysv-init

2016-10-28 Thread Iiro Laiho
** Description changed:

In order to run aiccu, we need following prerequisites:

  - Network should be connected
  - Time should be synced

Aiccu does not retry when it fails to connect to network. This can be a
problem with laptops that connect to network via WLAN. That is by design

Perhaps we should write a systemd service file for aiccu and wait until
time-sync.target. Another, possibly better, way is to completely ditch
aiccu's service and let network-manager handle starting it.

[Bug 1439771] Re: wpa_supplicant[874]: dbus: Failed to construct signal after 'suspend'

2016-10-24 Thread Iiro Laiho
To add to the earlier comment, "brcmsmac" is the module name on my
system when using the open source driver. It can also be b44, b43,
b43legacy, ssb, brcmsmac or bcma, or with proprietary driver, wl.

[Bug 1439771] Re: wpa_supplicant[874]: dbus: Failed to construct signal after 'suspend'

2016-10-24 Thread Iiro Laiho
I discussed this thing on #ubuntu-devel. Apparently it has something to
do with Broadcom WLAN chips or drivers as it seems to be unreproducible
on Intel chips. Would it be possible to make Broadcom drivers unload
before going to hibernate as it will help to avoid many problems?

User workaround: Create file /etc/pm/config.d/unload_module and put
"SUSPEND_MODULES="brcmsmac" into it.

Happens sometimes, but not after every suspend, with BCM4313. It's sad
to see this bug to be unfixed for so long.

[Bug 1598300] Re: cups hang after a while

2016-09-12 Thread Iiro Laiho
This seems to be a some kind of desktop/laptop power/resource saving
feature that does not take Web UI to the account. CUPS will immediately
start up again if I open the printing dialog or something.

When I read Stephan's error log as well as my own, it reads:

"I [30/Aug/2016:08:42:33 +0200] Printer sharing is off and there are no jobs
pending, will restart on demand.
I [30/Aug/2016:08:42:33 +0200] Scheduler shutting down normally."

Maybe some kind of xinetd setup would make it possible to shut CUPS down
but start it up when one tries to access the web UI.

Please do not expire this bug, that is not a solution. and Stephan has
provided the requested error log. WONTFIX would be a better solution if
this is the way it is intended to work.

[Bug 1622707] Re: CUPS Web UI stops responding after a while

2016-09-12 Thread Iiro Laiho
Sorry for this comment flood.

Now I think I have finally solved it out:

If I run cupsd -l in console, it just quits with exit status 0 after a
while. If I run it as a service, it exits but goes back on-line
immediately after I do something that needs printing service.

It almost looks like there is some kind of resource-saving feature here
that does not take the Web UI into account.

This seems to be a duplicate of #1598300
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/1598300).

[Bug 1622707] Re: CUPS Web UI stops responding after a while

2016-09-12 Thread Iiro Laiho
It seems to start responding again if I restart the CUPS service but it
seems to clear out after a while anyway. Now I proceed to test if it is
CUPS or the networking of the operating system by installing lighttpd
and trying if it has the same problem.

[Bug 1622707] [NEW] CUPS Web UI stops responding after a while

2016-09-12 Thread Iiro Laiho
Public bug reported:

CUPS Web administration UI available at localhost:631 stops responding
after a while. Initially it works fine, but after it has been running
for a moment it just shows the "Connection refused" message of the
browser. The printing system keeps running otherwise. This is a clean
install of Ubuntu. I have installed Seafile from PPA but I don't think
it has anything to do with this.

I am unable to find anything relevant from journalctl nor CUPS logs.

[Bug 1616899] Re: Does not honor alternative config files

2016-08-27 Thread Iiro Laiho
I don't think it is AppArmor as I can not find the required code for
this functionality in the sources of the version that Ubuntu has.

[Bug 1616899] Re: Does not honor alternative config files

2016-08-25 Thread Iiro Laiho
I took a look to the config files of Ubuntu and upstream versions of
cups-pdf. The Ubuntu version seems to lack the part that extracts the
configuration file name from the URI. Maybe Ubuntu just does not ship
new enough version to have this functionality.

[Bug 1616899] [NEW] Does not honor alternative config files

2016-08-25 Thread Iiro Laiho
Public bug reported:

http://www.cups-pdf.de/cups-pdf-CURRENT/README

says: "To create multiple instances of the backend with different
configurations, simply copy several config files in your config
directory, naming them cups-pdf-.conf, where is a unique
identifier for this instance. You can then select the new instances as
URI when creating a new printer in CUPS."

If I use uri like cups-pdf:/identifier and configuration file name cups-
pdf-identifier.conf, it still insists using the default config file.

@Martin Pitt,

What about the patch in comment #7? It shouldn't be a too big change for
a SRU?

This bug is over a year old and the patch has also been released ages
ago. Is there any change that the version in the repository would be
fixed?
