[Bug 969422] Re: cannot save connection without specifying a gateway

2012-04-14 Thread Istvan Szekeres
I accept this decision but I completely disagree with it. Forbidding me
entering a totally valid configuration for whatever reason but forcing
me to enter an invalid one absolutely does not sound right to me.

Analyzing the use case also does not tell me this is a right solution.
Those without strong knowledge of networking will most probably ask
someone else what data to enter (how the heck could they figure it out
themselves), so most probably they will be told the gateway address as
well. So what this feature is protecting them is that when they enter
the addresses they were told they simply forget one of them. I find it
very unlikely. Also they could do a lot other mistakes there - entering
wrong numbers, swapping the ip and the gw addresses, etc.

Also, what if they really do not have a gw address for that interface?
There is absolutely no indication that that is the reason for the button
to be disabled. It took me 10 minutes to figure it out. At least please
enable the button and complain about the missing gw when it is pressed.

I could also accept that the gw is required for the _first_ interface,
but not for additional ones (like in my case).

[Bug 969823] [NEW] software center does not find packages

2012-03-31 Thread Istvan Szekeres
Public bug reported:

To install nfs client support on my PC I typed nfs into the software-
center's search bar. Only 3 results came up:

- JFTP
- A practical guide to Ubuntu...
- LinuxUser Ausgabe*

but no NFS related packages.

When I type nfs- (without the quotes) into the search bar, then the
NFS related packages come up correctly.

They should appear when typing just nfs. It is not straightforward
that one has to add the - for these results.

Reproduce:

1. start software center
2. type nfs into the search bar
3. observe the missing NFS packages
4. type nfs- into the search bar
4. observe the NFS packages.

[Bug 969422] [NEW] cannot save connection without specifying a gateway

2012-03-30 Thread Istvan Szekeres
Public bug reported:

I have a dedicated network adapter in my computer that is directly
connected to my nas (no router/switch involved). Both have a dedicated
IP address. When I want to set up the connection, it insists on
specifying a gateway address. As the two are connected directly there is
no gateway and it does not even makes sense. However without a gateway
address specified the connection cannot be saved.

Re: [Bug 768925] Re: Launcher: localise Super+number ordering to match locale keyboard layout (eg. 0-9 for Hungarian)

2011-11-17 Thread Istvan Szekeres
On the hungarian layout 0 is the leftmost key, then 1,2,3 etc. So it is not
logical that pressing the (physically) first number activates the 10th
item, the 2nd activates the 1st etc.

It is constantly reproducible, it is always the second suspend failing after
a reboot. Will try with max_cpus=1.

[Bug 772616] [NEW] Suspend/Resume does not work

2011-04-28 Thread Istvan Szekeres
Public bug reported:

Suspend/Resume used to work correctly in Maverick (i.e. it worked 9
times out of 10 which I considered correct). Since the upgrade to
Natty it works properly after a fresh reboot (i.e. for the first time),
but it does not work for the second time, when the system was already
suspended+resumed before. In this case during suspend time (after
pressing the suspend button on the keyboard) the screen goes blank
(black), it no longer responds to pings on the network, but the system
does not stop (i.e. fans are still going, no shutdown feeling). The
only way I could find to get the system out of this state is by pressing
the power button for 5 secs which completely turns the PC off, and then
I can turn it on again but this does not play very nicely with my raid
array.

Pls let me know what other info is needed to resolve this issue.

I am not sure if this belongs to the linux package or not but I could
not file a bug directly against Natty as a distro.

[Bug 772620] [NEW] apport unfriendly with suspend/resume related bugs

2011-04-28 Thread Istvan Szekeres
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

I tried to file a bug regarding a suspend/resume related issue in Natty
- so I fired up ubuntu-bug. It asked for the kind of problem (X, sound,
etc.), there was no better choice for Suspend/Resume than other, but
then it said it I had to specify a package or a pid. GIven this issue
has no pid and I have no idea what package it is related to, I could not
simply file this bug report. FInally I decided to go with linux-generic,
having no better idea.

2011-04-23 Thread Istvan Szekeres

I use(d) padevchooser to select which application should use the builtin
sound chip and which should use a separate sound card (having the
headset plugged). Since the upgrade to Natty padevchooser does not work

[Bug 112539] Re: segmentation fault in smbd

2007-09-20 Thread Istvan Szekeres
Mathias: before setting a bug to invalid I would suggest to at least
wait for some feedback from the original problem reporter (This time it
was me). Even if the problem is solved for someone else It is not
necessarily solved for the original reporter.

To answer your question: I do not have the problem anymore. Though I
still do not know the reason, I still use the same samba package with
the same configuration, so basically nothing has changed that would
explain it.

Thanks for the help anyways.

[Bug 119764] Re: many sites unbrowseable with firefox

2007-06-10 Thread Istvan Szekeres
On my 1.4GHz AMD Athlon with 1GB of RAM the page above has loaded in
about 2-3 seconds, firefox remains responsive, scrolling up/down works
fine. I cannot notice any slowdowns.

Could you please try disabling the jave related plugins, maybe they are
the cause for the slowdown and not firefox.

Regards,
Pistahh

Did you also have the flash plugin under edgy?

There are about 2-3 always working embedded flash objects on that page.
If I remove them using adblock the cpu usage of firefox goes down to 0.

[Bug 112023] File transfer to windows hangs

2007-05-03 Thread Istvan Szekeres
Public bug reported:

Possibly this is since an upgrade from edgy to feisty, I am not exactly
sure.

On my linux host I have a vmware running windows xp as guest. This xp
mounts my home folder on the host using samba. It also mounts other
samba shares on other linuxes.

In some cases when I try to transfer a file from linux to xp, the file
transfer hangs - the destination file on windows is created but
absolutely no data is moved (in windows the Copying dialog is shown
(with the fancy animation going on) but the progess bar remains in the
0 position). After a few minutes windows says The specified network
name is no longer available and the transfer is aborted.

If meanwhile I strace the smbd process handling this connection, it
hangs in this syscall:

myhost:~% sudo strace -p 9846
Process 9846 attached - interrupt to quit
pause()

- Browsing the directories work without problems
- Browsing and transferring files from other samba shares (on other computers)
also work
- Transferring the problematic file using smbclient running on the host also
works.

[Bug 111774] Screensaver unlock dialog not shown

2007-05-02 Thread Istvan Szekeres
Public bug reported:

This just happened to me at least 3 times in the last week.

I came back to my computer (feisty), moved the mouse or hit some keys to
deactivate the screensaver. The unlock dialog where I have to type my
password is not displayed, the screen remains blank.

In such cases I switch to a console by Ctrl-Alt-F1, login, and I kill
this process:

13684 ?Sl 0:00 /usr/lib/gnome-screensaver/gnome-screensaver-
dialog --enable-switch

After going back to X, by moving the mouse or by hitting a key the
unlock dialog now appears so I can type my password.

[Bug 110781] Serpentine is ignoring writing speed setting

2007-04-28 Thread Istvan Szekeres
Public bug reported:

1. I started serpentine
2. in Edit-Preferences I selected Choose writing speed, and I set the value
to 2
3. I selected some mp3 files, and started writing them to CD

it was written in max. speed.
I checked the settings, still manually chosen speed=2 was selected.

I wrote another CD and while writing I checked the command line started
by serpentine - the speed setting was not present:

[Bug 82314] Re: pata driver in libata not mounting /home

2007-03-27 Thread Istvan Szekeres
Scott,

when using the old (non-sata based) ata drivers, you see the disks as
hd*. When using the sata-based ata drivers, you see them as sd*.

This particular bugreport was opened for the scenario when the new sata-
based drivers were used for disks with a host-protected area (HPA)
present. In these cases you could see messages like this:

[ 663.015850] attempt to access beyond end of device

Reed:

ad1. your partition table is OK, just the logical order of the partition
is not the same as the physical order and the fdisk output is ordered by
the logical layout.

ad2. The problem attempt to access beyond end of device can belong to
this bug, please do what Kyle suggested:

If you're feeling brave, boot with libata.ignore_hpa=1 to disable the host
 protected
area (which should enable your whole disk). Please attach dmesg whether it
 wasű
 successful or not.

meanwhile, dmesg is filled with lots of these:
