[Bug 1861530] [NEW] update-secureboot-policy runs at startup and burns CPU
Public bug reported: I am running Ubuntu 18.04 on a lenovo Thinkpad T490s. I enabled full disk encryption when I installed Ubuntu. I found that the computer ran hot and that a process was always running and using 50% of the available CPU, presumably taking one core. That process was `/usr/bin/perl -w /usr/share/debconf/frontend /usr/sbin/update- secureboot-policy --enroll-key` This process appears to be the same as the one described in this stack exchange post https://superuser.com/questions/1493050/update-secureboot-policy-enroll- key-running-on-every-new-startup-eating-reso I found that, as suggested by user931000 I could disable Secure Boot in UEFI settings to fix the behavior. I am not sure if this poses any security risk however, and find that secure boot has a way of turning itself on, at least with updates that I installed today on 31 January 2020. I think this is a bug and that CPU hogging processes should not run every time out of the box. This issue might be related to this other issue, for which a fix is apparently released, but which doesn't appear to be helping in my case. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shim-signed/+bug/1673817 1) Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS 2) Don't know the relevant package 3) I expect that Ubuntu should start up and run without a process burning all of the CPU, even if I enable disk encryption, and even if secureboot is enabled. 4) I have to choose between having a CPU hogging process turn on every time, turning off Secure Boot (while continuing to turn it off when updates re-turn off secure boot) and not encrypting my hard drive. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1861530 Title: update-secureboot-policy runs at startup and burns CPU To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1861530/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1318863] [NEW] unity dash loses ability to search for applications
Public bug reported: Every so often, about once a day (I haven't identified a trigger for this behaviour), the unity dash loses the ability to search for applications. I can open the dash and type, say firefox and nothing shows up. Rebooting does not seem to fix the problem. However if I type, as recommended here http://askubuntu.com/questions/125843/dash-search-gives-no-result (note this is a slightly different bug, I can still search for files and the like): rm ~/.local/share/zeitgeist/activity.sqlite unity --reset Unity restarts and searches for things normally. I would not advocate buying this laptop if you plan to install Ubuntu. On my system I am running 3.10.0-031000rc5-generic. I find the 20 minute boot problem only happens about 50% of the time rather than 95% of the time, as it did with earlier kernal versions, but still not 0% of the time as I would prefer. I have been unable to get the workaround discussed here to work on my system, perhaps because newer versions of this computer use a bios configuration that does not seem allow the workaround. I have found that if the computer does not boot up, force restarting it into safe mode, shutting down and then restarting in normal mode results in a successful boot most of the time. Also the following bug http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2043744p=12461562#post12461562 still exists for 12.04 meaning you can't use the right click button on the mouse-pad, which is also kind of annoying. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1093217 Title: Ubuntu 12.04/12.10/13.04 10-20min boot delay (From 3.2.0.29-3.8.0.19) [Lenovo IdeaPad Z580] To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/1093217/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Things stopped working for me. It turned out that I pasted that fix into the wrong section of grub.cfg and actually the computer was just working by magic (or whatever makes it sometimes start up right away). Anyhow after playing around with some settings (installing and removing bumblebee and such to try to get google-earth working) the magic seems to have worn off. Long start up times again. [Bug 1093217] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 10-20min boot delay (From 3.2.0.29-3.2.0.30) [Lenovo IdeaPad Z580]
I just tried applying Tom's workaround. Unfortunately, it seems to have no effect on my boot time. Further information: I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Lenovo Z580 Decompiling DSDT works fine. I made the modification no problem. When I recompiled, I got some warning messages, I'll attach the output from that below. running acpi /boot/DSDT.aml does not give error messages (or return anything for that matter) booting linux then takes about 17 minutes I'd love to hear if anybody has other suggestions. I'm happy to provide any additional information. Thanks. [Bug 1070402] [NEW] libreoffice impress crashes if I select view modes other than normal does not create crash report
Public bug reported: I recently reported the error listed below. I was informed to also submit a bug report and took the following additional steps at command line entered: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get -y upgrade sudo apt-get -y install libreoffice-dbg uno-libs3-dbg ure-dbg sudo service apport start force_start=1 checked to make sure apport was enabled, it was duplicated the error looked in the folder /var/crash There does not seem to be a bug report that gets generated in response to this crash. However, there is another bug report that seems to get generated when libreoffice crashes for other, more sporadic reasons. I restarted the computer. Re crashed libreoffice. Still no new error message. So apparently libreoffice or apport is not regestering this as a crash. Is there a work-around? Re: [Bug 1070402] Re: libreoffice impress crashes if I select view modes other than normal does not create crash report
Dear Mr. Penalver et al., Thanks for looking into this. I'm sorry I was not able to submit a bug report. As mentioned in the text of my report, I did follow the instructions you provided by email but was unable to generate a bug report. Is there any way I can work around the program not generating a bug report, beyond the instructions given? Thanks. -Jacob On Tue, Oct 23, 2012 at 9:39 AM, Christopher M. Penalver christopher.penal...@gmx.com wrote: Jacob Cram, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is missing. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. One may execute at a terminal: cd /var/crash sudo rm -r * sudo sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get -y upgrade sudo apt-get -y install libreoffice-dbg uno-libs3-dbg ure-dbg sudo service apport start force_start=1 If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. Now reproduce the crash, then open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the crash report you wish to submit. If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with 'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'. Please follow https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LibreOfficeBugWrangling when you file this crash report so the necessary information is provided. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thank you for your understanding. Got it, thanks for your patience. Submitting the bug report through ubuntu_bug _usr_lib_libreoffice_program_soffice.bin.1000.crash does an automatic error reporting thing but doesn't seem to ask for details. I also reposted using ubuntu_bug libreoffice and then attached the bug report, in case that information needs to be in the same place. -Jacob On Tue, Oct 23, 2012 at 10:05 AM, Christopher M.
