[Bug 1871183] Re: Bind9 syslog stops after upgrade to 1.15

2020-04-07 Thread Jaime Carranza
Sorry we've been trying to pin it down further and it seems it might not
actually be bind9 but our particular setup (virtualbox ubuntu 16.04 VM).
We believe it may be time related and have been able to reproduce just
updating NTP. It seems VM boots w/incorrect clock, bind starts, then NTP
updates time correctly, but that order seems to cause bind to stop
syslogging. Trying to narrow it down further.

Apologies about the misfiled tracker.

[Bug 1871183] Re: Bind9 syslog stops after upgrade to 1.15

2020-04-06 Thread Jaime Carranza
Seems after upgrading via `dist-upgrade` if bind is disabled first,
system is rebooted, then enabled it logs fine. However logging after 1st
reboot seems to cause syslogging from named to stop. Subsequent reboots
seem to log ok.

[Bug 48734] Re: Home permissions too open

2020-04-05 Thread Jaime Hablutzel
It really surprises me (negatively) that most Ubuntu experts seem to
agree on this design decision. Isn't a well accepted fact that security
can affect usability?.

Now, about:

> We assume that the people who share the machine are either trusted, or
in a position to hack the machine (boot from USB!) trivially.

That assumption is not correct for me, for example, when I lend my
computer to someone else, I don't usually trust them completely (so I'm
still sitting near enough so they can't boot from an USB without being
caught) and I just want to share with them the minimum they need to get
their work done and having access to my personal files is not part of
what they require.

And about:

> Now, in a more complex environment, like a university machine with
many users, people do not have access to the hardware and can't easily
root the box, but they also have the sysadmin skills to change the
default permission.

I think that it doesn't hold a totally valid point as sysadmins like me
tend to think that the default system settings are always secure enough
for most regular deployments, so you don't think it is a good idea to
change those settings unless you've read a thread like this one... which
not everyone is willing to look for and then read.

Finally, it seems to me that this default setting damages Linux
reputation (for non-experts) of being a secure OS.

Bug is only "fixed" for Swanky and Gnawty chromebooks. They are marked
to use a quirk, as an update breaks sound. To get a fix you should
contact with Hans de Goede (you can in bugzilla) and ask for a fix.

[Bug 1833169] Re: intel_max_cstate is needed with baytrail to aviod hangups

2019-06-21 Thread Jaime Pérez
Hi,

intel_idle.max_cstate=1 DOES provide a workaround (no freezes, but high
battery usage).

The patch is going to get into 5.2 merge window apparently, so I will
test it in that moment (in 4 weeks). Perhaps I will compile a kernel
with the patch, but is difficult with this hardware.

[Bug 1833116] Re: chtmax98090 not working out of the box

2019-06-20 Thread Jaime Pérez
** Description changed:

chtmax98090 intel HD audio device doesn't work out of the box after
installing ubuntu (from 14.04 to 18.04). It shows "Dummy Output" on
  audio devices.

Audio options shows device and it works if I do this:

- git clone https://github.com/plbossart/UCM.git
- cd UCM
- cp -r chtmax98090/ /usr/share/alsa/ucm/
- alsaucm -c chtmax98090 set _verb HiFi set _enadev Speakers
- #alsaucm -c chtmax98090 set _verb HiFi set _enadev Headphone
- alsactl store
+  git clone https://github.com/plbossart/UCM.git
+  cd UCM
+  cp -r chtmax98090/ /usr/share/alsa/ucm/
+  alsactl store

It would be great if there were a solution to make it works out of the
box. The device (Chromebook Acer CB3-111 has it's end of life for
chromeOS in July-August, so I suppose more people with this device will
  change OS perhaps to Ubuntu).

I was expecting to see in "Choose a Layout" a Variant for Spanish that
configures Chromebook's keys. In chromeos I was able to use adv page and re
page with Chrome search key + up/down.
I am able to write though.

[Bug 1833116] [NEW] chtmax98090 not working out of the box

2019-06-17 Thread Jaime Pérez
Public bug reported:

chtmax98090 intel HD audio device doesn't work out of the box after
installing ubuntu (from 14.04 to 18.04). It shows "Dummy Output" on
audio devices.

Audio options shows device and it works if I do this:

 git clone https://github.com/plbossart/UCM.git
 cd UCM
 cp -r chtmax98090/ /usr/share/alsa/ucm/
alsaucm -c chtmax98090 set _verb HiFi set _enadev Speakers
#alsaucm -c chtmax98090 set _verb HiFi set _enadev Headphone
 alsactl store

It would be great if there were a solution to make it works out of the
box. The device (Chromebook Acer CB3-111 has it's end of life for
chromeOS in July-August, so I suppose more people with this device will
change OS perhaps to Ubuntu).

[Bug 1832495] [NEW] Browser windows spread across workspaces upon restore

2019-06-12 Thread Jaime Hunter
Public bug reported:

This bug has shown up in every version of Linux Mint I have used
(currently 18.3 Cinnamon 64-bit). It occurs by doing the following:
Immediately after initiating restore of a multi-window browser session
(e.g. FireFox), switch to a different workspace. If the system is in the
early stages of restoring multiple browser windows (and/or multiple
tabs) when switch to workspace is done, then whatever windows / tabs are
being restored at that instant will "follow" into the workspace just
switched to. So the effect is to spread the multi-window session across
multiple workspaces, when they should be restored only in the workspace
where restoration was initiated. The three workarounds for this bug that
I am aware of are: 1) Don't use more than one workspace (obviously
unacceptable), 2) Don't open more than one browser window (also
unacceptable), 3) Wait a sufficient amount of time for all windows to be
started up in the workspace from which browser restoration started
before switching to another workspace. It should be obvious that the
more browser windows there are to restore, the easier it is to reproduce
this bug, and more time user must wait before switching to another
workspace. I often restore browser sessions made up of 20 browser
windows or more, so it is quite easy for me to reproduce!

[Bug 1741891] [NEW] The updated driver in this question causes Unity to crash on Intel graphics cards

2018-01-08 Thread Jaime Cruz
Public bug reported:

Not sure what happened but hoping someone can help. Running Trusty Tahr
on a Thinkpad T410. Ever since Thursday morning (October 26) when I
applied the latest updates, Unity crashes every time I click the "Search
your computer" icon at the top of the launcher. Pressing the "Super" key
causes the same crash. The "Shutdown" and "Restart" buttons don't do
anything (I have to open the terminal and enter "sudo shutdown" to shut
down the computer). HELP! More than happy to provide ANY documentation
you require. My desktop computer (an HP Pavilion) is at the exact same
maintenance level and is not experiencing this problem.

[Bug 1649342] [NEW] md5sum fails with message "Invalid argument" on 4, 294, 967, 295-byte files in FAT32 - tracked down to Ubuntu incompatible change to kernel's fread and stdio stream

2016-12-12 Thread Jaime Gaspar
Public bug reported:

Bug discovered in the threads at http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-
coreutils/2016-12/msg8.html and
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=189981 partially quoted
below (with the permission of the persons involved).

=== Message 1 ===

--- Bug ---
In a FAT32 file system, if one runs md5sum on a 4,294,967,294-byte file (one
byte less than the maximum file size) it succeeds, but if one runs md5sum on a
4,294,967,295-byte file (the maximum file size) it fails with error message
"Invalid argument".

--- How to reproduce the bug ---
Create a FAT32 file system in a file "tmp.fs":
   truncate -s 9G tmp.fs
   mkfs.vfat -F 32 tmp.fs
Mount at "/tmp/mounted_tmp/" the file system in file "tmp.fs":
   sudo mkdir /tmp/mounted_tmp/
   sudo mount -o loop,rw,uid=1000,gid=1000 tmp.fs /tmp/mounted_tmp/
Create two files in "/tmp/mounted_tmp/", file "file_1" with 4,294,967,294 bytes
and file "file_2" with 4,294,967,295 bytes:
   cd /tmp/mounted_tmp/
   truncate -s 4294967294 file_1
   truncate -s 4294967295 file_2
Run md5sum on the two files "file_1" and "file_2":
   md5sum file_1
   md5sum file_2
The outputs should be respectively (notice that the second output is an error
message):
   541249e3205af07b4a03f891185f64a0 file_1
   md5sum: file_2: Invalid argument
Unmount the file system at "/tmp/mounted_tmp/":
   cd ..
   sudo umount /tmp/mounted_tmp/
   sudo rmdir /tmp/mounted_tmp/
Remove the file "tmp.fs".

--- Notes ---
Tested with md5sum 8.25 running on an updated Ubuntu 16.10 with kernel
4.8.0-30-generic.
The same bug affects sha1sum, sha224sum, sha256sum, sha384sum, and sha512sum,
but not crc32.

=== Message 2 ===

...
> --- How to reproduce the bug ---
...

I can't repro this with any md5sum version on 4.2.5-300.fc23.x86_64
So I'm guessing a kernel regression.
Can you strace -o /tmp/md5sum.strace md5sum file_2,
and look towards the end of the strace file to identify the syscall returning
EINVAL?
In any case I'd direct the issue towards the kernel folks.

OK we've read all we can, but to verify md5sum will do:
  fread(buffer + 32767, 1, 1, stream)

Then the stdio stream will issue the underlying read()s
I'm not too sure where there are two reads here,
but they shouldn't be returning EINVAL, but just
returning 0 to indicate EOF.

>read(3, 0x25c12b0, 8192)= -1 EINVAL (Invalid argument)
>read(3, 0x25c12b0, 8192)= -1 EINVAL (Invalid argument)

So it's a kernel bug as suspected.

[Bug 1619617] [NEW] always focus passwords prompts

2016-09-02 Thread Jaime Pérez
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Sometimes (when opening chromium and being asked for password) I start
to type the password and I lose focus sudently by another app. This can
be used to steal passwords making an application to gain focus when a
password prompt is opened. It would be better to allow change focus only
clicking twice on another place, so it can't be changed by accident,
what would make that password became visible on the terminal, for
example.

** Affects: unity (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Information type changed from Private Security to Public Security

[Bug 1580882] Re: [, Intel Broadwell HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] Sound like half speed

2016-06-13 Thread Jaime Alberto Silva
HDMI Output is not working on Lenovo Thinkpad T450.

I'm using gnome-ubuntu 16.04. When I connect and set HDMI as default
output in control center / audio and then do audio test (included on
that same dialog) all I hear is noise that sounds like farts. When I
start a player like Clementine or Youtube in browser the audio goes
away, even the test buttons stop working.

Audio on laptop speakers or headphone plug works, only HDMI is not
working.

[Bug 1573408] Re: GNOME Software does not install third-party .deb packages

2016-05-06 Thread Jaime Fernando Ortega Culaciati
Ok everyone, I've attempted to use the update manager in a live-usb, and it
shows the update for gnome-software. So, a fresh install should receive the
update without using the console.
It looks like that those who've tested the patch will have to update via:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Greetings to everyone, I'm glad that this bug was fixed. Thanks to
everyone that was involved in fixing this.
