[Bug 390392] Re: regression - resume failure in Jaunty on Dell Latitude D820

2010-09-05 Thread James Abley
Sorry, my daily computing experience is now on a MacBook Pro rather than
my old laptop, and thus on OSX rather than Ubuntu. I had upgraded it to
lucid but wasn't sure if the problem was still there. Just dug out the
laptop and updated everything now:

$ sudo aptitude update
...
$ sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
...
$ lsb_release -d
Description:Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS

I've suspended and resumed 5 times now without any issue. Similarly, no
problem with hibernate.

I'd close this. Only ever had the problem one time; can't reproduce and
no-one else appears to have hit it.

[Bug 390392] Re: regression - resume failure in Jaunty on Dell Latitude D820

2009-06-22 Thread James Abley
** Description changed:

I upgraded from Intrepid to Jaunty today. Resume has not worked since
  then (tried 5 times).

I tried running the test script [1] - fails to resume.

The problem seen is that a resume attempt appears to happen, but the
screen remains black, intermittent light disk activity, unable to switch
to virtual terminal and keyboard input appears to be ignored.

This is a regression. Suspend / hibernate and resume were working fine
before the upgrade. I reported a previous problem when upgrading from
- hoary to intrepid, which was previously fixed by some update.
+ gutsy to hardy, which was previously fixed by some unknown update.

This bug is reproducible. It has failed to resume 5 out of 5 times.

  It worked before the upgrade.

No flashing CAPS or anything - the only time I've seen that is when I
upgraded the memory on the laptop and didn't seat the module properly.

2009-02-28 Thread James Abley
I'm not sure how I would find out whether the file system has any
errors?

I did see this problem with both my laptop and home server when I
upgraded, which to me implies that it may be a reproducible error of
some sort, rather than a localised to one machine corruption?

If you can provide guidance as to what and how to collect any further
information, I can take a look to see if the logs are still available.

[Bug 268754] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV on restart after upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04

2008-10-08 Thread James Abley
Yeah, understandable. It only happened when I upgraded the distro at
home and the icons on my desktop representing work samba shares caused
nautilus to crash. Since the upgrade, the samba shares do not get
persisted as icons on my desktop, so I can't reproduce the problem at
home, and without that, I'm not going to be able to provide any further
debugging information.

Thanks.

[Bug 270637] Re: Hibernate / Suspend broken by upgrade to 8.04 on Dell Latitude

2008-09-22 Thread James Abley
Hello,

Is there anything I can do to help progress this? I understand that
people are likely to be busy on Intrepid Ibex stuff, rather than looking
at Hardy issues. Since this is my work laptop that I use day to day, I'm
a little reluctant to start testing the alpha on it. I had a very stable
Gutsy installation, and I've hit a few issues with Hardy.

I can provide more logs if required, but otherwise I'm just Googling to
try out stuff. Any pointers appreciated.

Cheers,

James

[Bug 270637] [NEW] Hibernate / Suspend broken by upgrade to 8.04 on Dell Latitude

2008-09-15 Thread James Abley
Public bug reported:

Dell Latitude D820, recently upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04. Previously, I
had hardly any problems with suspend and hibernate. Now it doesn't work
at all. When it tries to resume, just displays a black screen and I
can't open any virtual terminal to see what might be going on.

Attaching syslog output from when I suspended and attempted to resume
earlier today, which was a typical failure.

[Bug 224952] Re: Firefox 3.0 Beta 5 crashed when playing video

2008-07-31 Thread James Abley
Picked up an update for Firefox 3 along with some other stuff today and
it looks like this has been fixed.

I was able to view videos on the reported problematic page.

Thanks for your time and to the team that fixed it.

[Bug 224952] Re: Firefox 3.0 Beta 5 crashed when playing video

2008-05-06 Thread James Abley
Hi John,

I did previously run

locate libflashsupport.so

and got nothing.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/224952/comments/6

sudo updatedb
locate libflashsupport.so
sudo locate libflashsupport.so

Still nothing.

I'm having trouble getting a backtrace working. I guess it's a missing
dependency which I'm trying to track down. There isn't a firefox-dbg
package available, or libnss3-0d-dbg. There is firefox-dbgsym and
libnss3-0d-dbgsym. Have the packages been renamed or are the ones I
require genuinely missing?

When I do

firefox -g 21 | tee ~/Desktop/gdb-firefox.log

It doesn't go into gdb. Instead, the Restore Session prompt comes up,
the app runs and crashes. I'll try to work out what's going wrong
tonight.

Cheers,

James

[Bug 224952] Re: Firefox 3.0 Beta 5 crashed when playing video

2008-05-01 Thread James Abley
John,

thanks for responding.

I already stated that I don't have anything in /var/crash

ls -la /var/crash
. blah
..blah

That's all folks!

Double-click it? The crash files that I have on a different machine
(still running 7.10) don't look executable - they look like text files.
Is there some application mapped to .crash files?

2008-05-01 Thread James Abley
I'm having problems creating a backtrace. There doesn't appear to be a
firefox-dbg package available?

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs?highlight=(mozilla#head-
c576e78d92cb3c959c271158b6ace98be835de83

Also, there still isn't a .crash file generated for me to post.

The problem does consistently occur when I create a new Profile using
the -ProfileManage switch. I've attached another strace for that one,
which is smaller and hopefully easier to use.

Is it worthwhile trying to figure out why I'm not seeing a crash file
generated that apport can use?

[Bug 224952] [NEW] Firefox 3.0 Beta 5 crashed when playing video

2008-04-30 Thread James Abley
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Description:Ubuntu 8.04
Release:8.04

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ apt-cache policy firefox
firefox:
  Installed: 3.0~b5+nobinonly-0ubuntu3
  Candidate: 3.0~b5+nobinonly-0ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 3.0~b5+nobinonly-0ubuntu3 0
500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

When trying to view this page:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/chrismoyles/celebritylap.shtml

The Firefox process dies when the video is retrieved from youtube.

I've seen other reports asking for the contents of /var/crash. I don't
have anything in there. The problem is consistently reproducible on my
machine, so I should be able to supply more information if someone can
tell me what to look for; e.g. dpkg selections, firefox Content-Type
application associations or something else that might point to the
problem.

This machine was a vanilla 7.10 install, recently upgraded to 8.04.

Nothing obviously enlightening when running the process from the CLI
either.

[Bug 219695] Re: Ethernet card not working after update

2008-04-20 Thread James Abley
I don't appear to have an earlier version of a kernel to try, when
looking at grub.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /boot/grub/menu.lst

snip...

title Ubuntu 7.10, memtest86+

### END DEBIAN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST

But then, I don't have any other versions when I look at my home desktop
running 7.10. I'm reasonably sure that it used to keep old kernels lying
around, and just insert the new one into the menu.lst options.
Presumably that behaviour has changed to just keep pointing at the most
recent version, and delete the old ones?

I'm not running the latest BIOS[ 1]; I'm on A06, so I'm going to try
upgrading that and see if it has any effect. But this does appear to be
a regression or conflict of some sort, since it was working, then I did
an update, and now it's not working.

[Bug 219695] [NEW] Ethernet card not working after update

2008-04-19 Thread James Abley
Public bug reported:

Dell Latitude D820.

Blank install of 7.10, with custom partitioning.

When the install had finished, I was able to sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude safe-upgrade.

That gave me a kernel update and various other stuff, so I needed to
reboot.

Upon restarting, the ethernet card doesn't work; it was working
previously, since I downloaded the updates over my LAN, but the wireless
card is fine, so I can still get on my home network. Unfortunately, this
installation of Ubuntu came about after a year of suffering on Windows
Vista at work and I'd finally got my boss to agree to me migrating to
Ubuntu. But if networking doesn't work, then I'm left looking a little
foolish and buggered. We don't have wireless in the office, so I need
the ethernet card to work.

vanilla, untouched /etc/network/interfaces:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/var/log$ cat /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

Attaching syslog snippet showing me on the wireless connection at home,
then plugging in the network cable, letting it bork my network
connection, and then unplugging again so that the wireless connection is
restored.

I'm going to try rolling back the kernel via grub options, and see how
that affects things.

I get the same problem with this version of flash as well, but only when
I'm listening to music (via BBC Radio 1 streaming, for example). So it
appears to be a problem with opening flash content in Firefox, when the
audio system is busy. I think I've definitely read a bug report about
this elsewhere, so this can probably be considered a duplicate of that
bug report.

[Bug 208203] [NEW] firefox hangs when clicking on certain links

2008-03-28 Thread James Abley
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Ubuntu 7.10 with Firefox 2.0.0.13

http://www.if.com/toolsandcalculators/offsetcalculator.aspx

Clicking on the 'Try our offset calculator' link in the middle of the
page causes Firefox to hang and need killing and restarting to do
anything with it.

The offending markup:

a href=\javascript:void(0);\ title=\Link opens in a popup window -
Try our offset calculator\
onclick=\popup=window.open('/toolsandcalculators/offsetcalcpopup.aspx',
'popUp', 'width=1011, height=708, scrollbars=yes, location=no,
menubars=no, toolbar=no, resizable=no');\Try our offset calculator/a

Which is produced via document.write()

However, I can view it fine using Firefox 2.0.0.13 on Windows Vista. A
popup window opens and the content is displayed properly.

** Affects: firefox (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 208203] Re: firefox hangs when clicking on certain links

2008-03-28 Thread James Abley
Thanks Gert,

Hmm, I'm listening to BBC Radio 1 at the same time, and seem to remember
reading somewhere about Flash and sound system interaction problems.

I'll try to narrow it down.
