[Bug 664526] Re: setting nomodeset in grub, if live session was started with nomodeset

2010-10-23 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
A paper cut is defined as: »A trivially fixable usability bug that the
average user would encounter in default installation of Ubuntu or
Kubuntu Desktop Edition«.

Since this bug is only valid for »some machines« and the fix does not
seem trivial, this can not be addressed as part of the Paper Cuts
project.

Don’t worry though, it will still be registered as a bug in ubiquity.
For more criteria on paper cuts, please see

[Bug 657102] Re: Please make it possible to configure mame in one's home directory

2010-10-10 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
Mame is not part of the default Ubuntu install and this is not something
the average user would encounter, hence this can not be addressed as
part of the Paper Cuts project.

For the paper cut criteria, please look at:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut

But don’t worry, I am only removing the Paper Cuts project. The bug will
still be here for the mame project.

[Bug 602265] Re: Maverick: The defaut livecd and installed firefox bookmarks could do with updating.

2010-10-03 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
So, why don’t we promote some other free open projects there that are useful
and not related to Ubuntu?
I’ve been gathering some of them at http://jancborchardt.wordpress.com/links/

http://identi.ca
http://joindiaspora.com (once it’s running)
http://openetherpad.com
http://libre.fm
http://sparkleshare.org
http://wikipedia.org
http://openstreetmap.org
http://dict.cc
http://p2pu.org
http://flossmanuals.net
http://oercommons.org
http://openfontlibrary.org

And maybe also some non-digital:
http://couchsurfing.org
http://freecycle.org

When they already have Ubuntu, we should help them dive deeper into free
culture. I know it took long for me to get to know all these massively
useful sites.

On the current bookmarks:
Why ubuntulinux.org and not just call it ubuntu.com like it is everywhere else?
Launchpad answers should definitely stay! The direct connection to everything
else (including frequently asked questions) makes it much easier to operate
than a forum.
I’m not entirely sure on Debian. If that is there, GNOME should be too. On the
other hand, it is not useful for most.

[Bug 629258] Re: Battery life estimation never comes around

[Bug 629024] Re: Clarify which kernel is updated in Grub

2010-09-02 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
What about just not showing the kernel choice? The topmost is mostly
right anyway.

If you are a normal user, have a stable system and install tested
kernels, you are not likely to need to choose at all. Seeing this dialog
every time on startup (with a countdown and a list of choices) will make
a big question mark pop up above your head. 10 seconds long, every
startup.

Compare that to the few times where you actually need to choose another
kernel. At the point when you need to do that you probably don’t know it
has to do with this kernel thing and you need to ask for help anyway.
When you tell them there is no such thing as a list before the Ubuntu
logo appears, they’ll tell you you need to hold shift to see it (is it
shift? I don’t know, don’t remember the last time I needed it.)

[Bug 270963] Re: when you unmount a volume, show your home

2010-08-29 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
I would say this is not a duplicate but a sequel of that bug.

Redirecting to Computer does not seem such a good fix because:
- It exposes the filesystem even more
- It is very unlikely that you want to continue working in Computer because
there normally is:
  - CD/DVD Drive (which you haven’t used in months)
  - Filesystem (…)
  - USB Drive (the one you probably just ejected)

Redirecting to one’s home folder is a much more sensible and useful
solution.

[Bug 626074] [NEW] Double-clicking on archive should extract it

2010-08-28 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Currently, clicking on an archive opens file-roller. To extract an
archive, one needs to right-click and select ›Extract Here‹.

As the major use case for archives (mostly downloads) is extracting them rather
than modifying files in them, this should be switched:
Double-clicking (or clicking in single-click mode) should extract the archive
(like on Mac OS).
The right-click option for ›Extract Here‹ should be changed into something like
›Edit Contents‹, which would then launch file-roller.

Google Mail calls it Bin, short and simple. If that wouldn’t suit most

[Bug 406626] Re: Deleted Items Folder inconsistently named in en_GB localization

2010-08-25 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
About the .bin confusion:
No normal user should ever come upon a .bin file (or file extensions at all but
that’s a different story). Everyone that works with .bin files knows the
difference. So, where is the confusion?

@unforeseen: Compare how often .bin files come up in support cases vs.
how often the word Bin is used on any interface to resemble a place
for deleted files.

If anything, the extension should be changed. But that’s not the point
here. (Although it was quite funny seeing .bin files translated
literally in the German version of the movie Hackers.)

I am asking because of the alternative application menu Cardapio:
https://launchpad.net/cardapio
It has a Software Center plugin which already uses the »software-center
PACKAGENAME« parameter. This additional search string parameter would be of
great use:
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/cardapio/+spec/software-center-plugin

[Bug 612509] [NEW] If already running, using »software-center PACKAGENAME« does nothing

2010-08-02 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

Newest version (2.1.7) on Ubuntu 10.10

If Software Center is already open, regardless if on main page or on an
application’s page, nothing happens when you run the »software-center
PACKAGENAME« command.

It should instead change the open instance of Software Center to the
page of PACKAGENAME or at least open a new instance to do that.

[Bug 612507] Re: No parameter to pass a search string

2010-08-02 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
First off, thanks for the two quick actions. :)

Cardapio already displays the first 5 search results and on click they
direct correctly to the corresponding page in Software Center.

Additionally, under the search results there is a button »Open Software
Center« in case the desired program is not in the top 5, which currently
only opens Software Center. Instead, it should open a search in Software
Center with the string that is currently in the Cardapio search field,
so the user can browse all results there.

I understand that this is a very specific request, but I can certainly
imagine it being useful for other programs as well. :)

[Bug 610116] [NEW] Label gets converted to uppercase

2010-07-26 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gparted

This happens quite often, now it was a USB stick formatted as FAT32.

I want to change the name to »USB-Knecht«, but after applying and
reloading it is converted to »USB-KNECHT«.

This is a small bug but rather annoying as it gets hard to read and
looks ugly.

[Bug 605818] [NEW] cheese crashed with signal 5 in _XError()

2010-07-15 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
Public bug reported:

Cheese starts and closes after about 2-3 seconds.
This also happened on Lucid before I upgraded to the development release.

Running cheese from terminal puts:

Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'cheese' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.

somehow human-readable if found.

Instead it gives me:

Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file.

It is totally confusing for German users being served links for English

It works in the localized Windows and normal Linux builds, only Ubuntu

[Bug 569868] [NEW] option to have Guake at the bottom of the screen

2010-04-25 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt

That would be immensely handy because most window controls, bars etc.
are obscured by the normal setup.

This was already reported at http://labs.alfaiati.net/guake/ticket/102

I manually edited my code just like that:

[Bug 565625] [NEW] every game from »sgt-puz zles« uses Slant’s screenshot

2010-04-17 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

I am using 10.04 Beta but this also happens on another computer running 9.10:
Search software-center for »sgt-puzzles« – every game there, though listed
individually, uses the screenshot of Slant (one of the packages’ games).

I guess that this is quite confusing if you are opening a game not
knowing it belongs to that pack.

An example is attached.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04
Package: software-center 2.0
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-21.31-generic-pae 2.6.32.11+drm33.2
Uname: Linux 2.6.32-21-generic-pae i686
NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia
Architecture: i386
Date: Sat Apr 17 23:47:24 2010
InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala - Release i386 (20091028.5)
PackageArchitecture: all
ProcEnviron:
 LANG=en_US.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: software-center

[Bug 532844] Re: Lucid: White symbols on light panel and Ubuntu Logo are difficult to see

2010-04-10 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
That's weird. If you switched the theme back to normal, this dot should
be black as well. Mine is.

Maybe yours are configuration problems rather than bugs. I'd then
recommend the clean install you mentioned already. Do not install the
beta on a production machine though (only if you like experimenting
and/or know what you are doing). ;)

[Bug 532844] Re: Lucid: White symbols on light panel and Ubuntu Logo are difficult to see

2010-04-09 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
Did not have branding-ubuntu, installed it, restarted. Radiance still
works fine for me. Ambiance etc. still do not.

@Kenneth: It is not about an applet. The Menu Bar applet works fine
because the white Ubuntu logo has dark background there. It is the white
Ubuntu logo in the white »Add to Panel«-dialogue that is invisible.

@madbiologist: The Ubuntu logo and the power off icon should both be
black. Did you change any themes?

@madbiologist: You can change that under System Preferences
Appearance: Theme Customize Icons: Ubuntu-Mono-Light.

Beat me to it, thanks James. :)

[Bug 554036] Re: some .CR2 (RAW) pictures are displayed mirrored

2010-04-08 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
I don't quite understand the first paragraph. Sounds like the reason is
that the file is corrupted? This happens only for some pictures, I can
not recognize a pattern.

I can now confirm them failing to open in F-Spot though. File corruption
seems quite possible here. :(

I'll try unflipping, opening them on other computers and repairing them
somehow. A shame that I don't look at my RAWs too often.

Thanks.

[Bug 532844] Re: Lucid: White symbols on light panel and Ubuntu Logo are difficult to see

2010-04-08 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
Same here. But Radiance is still working fine, black logo on
white(/beige) background both times.

Could you please make a screenshot of your Menu Bar with logo and the
part of the »Add to Panel«-dialogue where the Menu bar is?

[Bug 532844] Re: Lucid: White symbols on light panel and Ubuntu Logo are difficult to see

2010-04-07 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
A similar bug is still present in the GNOME »Add to Panel«-dialogue,
where the Ubuntu logo next to »Main Menu« and »Menu Bar« is white-on-
white-invisible.

This happens for all dark themes [Ambiance, DarkRoom, Dust, New Wave].

(Running latest Lucid Beta updates.)

[Bug 532844] Re: Lucid: White symbols on light panel and Ubuntu Logo are difficult to see

2010-04-07 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
@madbiologist: For me it works fine with Radiance because the logo is
black on white. Did you update to the latest versions?

Though you have to close and reopen the »Add to Panel«-dialogue to let
it change if you are switching themes live.
