[Bug 1793124]

2022-05-22 Thread Jan Nekvasil
As akkad...@gmail.com asked more than a year ago in comment #29: Will a
donation make a difference? I need the smooth scrolling to use OO Calc
on a touch display by elderly people in my business, so I'm financially
interested into this feature.

[Bug 1477123] [NEW] Device's pretty hostname contains superfluous quotation marks

2015-07-22 Thread Jan Nekvasil
Public bug reported:

In /etc/machine-info, the value of PRETTY_HOSTNAME is set to Aquaris
E4.5 Ubuntu Edition (including quotation marks) like this:

PRETTY_HOSTNAME=Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition

Unlike in e.g. bash, these quotation marks are part of the value, which
is later displayed in bluetooth settings menu and on the other devices.

[Bug 1477117] [NEW] obexd root is set to /tmp, should be /home/phablet

2015-07-22 Thread Jan Nekvasil
Public bug reported:

If You connect via bluetooth FTP to a Ubuntu Touch Phone (in my case BQ
Aquaris E4.5), You will end up browsing it's /tmp, which is pretty
confusing and not very useful to a normal user. You can change it with
editing /usr/share/dbus-1/services/obexd.service and
/usr/share/upstart/sessions/obexd.conf (probably only one of them is the
right one), adding --root=/home/phablet parameter after
/usr/lib/obexd/obexd and restart the device.

[Bug 814833] Re: Opening the dash is very slow and laggy

2013-04-29 Thread Jan Nekvasil
I think I may have found something important. To see that effect too,
please follow these steps:

1) Install these packages:
   sudo apt-get install compiz-plugins compizconfig-settings-manager.

2) Launch CompizConfig Settings Manager, search for Show Repaint
plugin and switch it on. Hit the AltSuperR combo.

3) Now all the areas which are redrawed with last screen update should
be rendered with another transparent color overlay. Try move some
windows around and open/close menus to see how it works. Notice only
damaged regions are repainted. If the colors are changing too fast for
You, try to lower the framerate in the Composite plugin. 10 FPS should
be fine.

4) Open the Dash and watch as the whole screen (!) is repainted with
every (!) update; not only during the opening fade in animation, but
actually all the time until dash is closed again. In fact even a single
pixel that changed in the top panel, e.g. seconds in datetime indicator
or indicator-multiload forces the whole screen repaint too.

5) Hit AltSuperR to again to end Your colorful bad trip.

[Bug 1099787] Re: Dash blur is too slow to fade in. Please don't fade it unless you can make it faster/smoother.

2013-04-26 Thread Jan Nekvasil
I suggest to disable all fade in/out effects completely when running on
low GFX mode (UNITY_LOW_GFX_MODE is set). This could help a lot those
users who have to stick with low spec HW, without affecting normal
mode at all. I have an integrated Mobility Radeon HD 3450/3470, and the
fade in/out lag is horrible, no matter if I use the open source ati
driver or fglrx-legacy (from makson96/fglrx PPA).

[Bug 824890] Re: Dash performance issues with 'Active Blur' enabled

2013-03-11 Thread Jan Nekvasil
ATI RV620 [Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series], Raring, radeon driver.
Switching off active blur has no effect for me. It seem like it's Dash's
fade in/out what takes most of the time. Unfortunately there is no way
(yet) to change that in CCSM, it's harcoded. One has to edit the source
code and recompile whole compiz. Did anyone tried that already?

[Bug 1056799] [NEW] autokey-gtk blocks keyboard input on second attempt to execute python script in 12.10 quantal

2012-09-26 Thread Jan Nekvasil
Public bug reported:

autokey-gtk 0.90.1-1 in current Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal completely blocks
keyboard input to X server when trying to execute python script for
second time.

Steps to reproduce:

1) open arbitrary window where is possible to write some text.
2) call some autokey python script either by hotkey or abbreviation. The script
crashes without any visible output to the text editing area.
3) call the same script again. Now the keyboard input doesn't work anymore;
only help is to kill autokey process.

[Bug 662766] Re: does not reconnect after suspend/resume

2012-06-13 Thread Jan Nekvasil
Ubuntu 12.04 Precise, empathy 3.4.2-0ubuntu1. Empathy sometimes connects
after resume, sometimes don't. In every case the throbber keeps spinning
(which generates more workload for compiz and therefore raise CPU usage
by the way). Only way to make the throbber disappear is to go offline
and online again.

[Bug 968510] [NEW] Vino VNC server should be whitelisted for legacy systray for security reasons

2012-03-29 Thread Jan Nekvasil
Public bug reported:

Vino, GNOME's default desktop sharing VNC server, doesn't display its
icon in the legacy systray. There is an option in Vino's configuration
dialog to show that icon in systray *only* when is somebody connected,
so it's kind of security issue; especially when incoming connection
confirmation is turned off. Leaving local user in belief that nobody is
connected to his/her desktop when the opposite is true is bad practice.

This issue can be easily fixed adding the item 'Vino' to
com.canonical.Unity.Panel.systray-whitelist.

[Bug 879267] Re: gnome-exe-thumbnailer doesn't work

2011-10-21 Thread Jan Nekvasil
gnome-exe-thumnailer.sh takes two arguments: INPUTFILE and OUTPUTFILE.
Without them just throws an error.

But the thumbnailing in Oneiric obviously does not work because GNOME 3
changed the way which are thumbnailers registered to the system; instead
of gconf it now uses .thumnailer (similar to .desktop) files in
usr/share/thumbnailers. Just put the attached file there, and it should
work.

1) Open application with two windows (e.g. Nautilus with different folders:
~/Music, ~/Pictures).
2) Open another application (Calculator).
3) Switch back to first application by clicking on it's icon on the launcher.
4) Switch back to second application using the same method.
5) Switch back to first application using the same method.
6) Repeat ad lib.

Expected result: The last used first application's window will get activated
and raised every time.
Actual result: Focus alternates between both first application's windows by
each switch back to first application.

[Bug 517751] Re: Appointment acceptation is sent to organizer with wrong sender value (as organizer himself)

2011-05-19 Thread Jan Nekvasil
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: evolution

  Example:

- Organizer Bob (b...@foo.bar) sends an appointment form MS Outlook to
+ Organizer Bob (b...@foo.bar) sends an appointment from MS Outlook to
attendee Jane (j...@foo.bar). Jane using Evolution accept the
appointment with Reply to sender option checked. Bob then receives the
appointment from himself, b...@foo.bar. (In worst case scenario, Bob's
filtering mails from himself, so he never find out that Jane has
  accepted the appointment.)

That's all because of the X-MS-OLK-SENDER;CN value in corresponding
.ics is set to organizer's e-mail in both the proposal and acceptance
answer, but is broken for some reason even if both Bob and Jane are
  using Evolution.

[Bug 720446] Re: possible memory leak in compiz when using places, dashboard

I can confirm this on three different hosts with three different
graphics adapters: Radeon HD 3400, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS and Intel

unity --replace to Ctrl+Alt+U and hit this combo whenever things go

[Bug 91389] Re: Support for more than one VPN simultaneously

2011-04-16 Thread Jan Nekvasil
Network Manager's about dialog states:

Copyright Ā© 2004-2008 Red Hat, Inc.
Copyright Ā© 2005-2008 Novell, Inc.

Neither Canonical nor Ubuntu community are NM's main developers, or
authors of it's new features at least. As for myself, I would appreciate
this functionality (which I desperately need for my daily work), but
after these all years I don't expect this change coming from Ubuntu devs
anymore without putting any blame on them.

[Bug 632790] Re: offer to read icons from theme *before* using the supplied ones

2011-02-07 Thread Jan Nekvasil
I just added preliminary support for icon themes. For now it works with
Faenza theme only, otherwise it defaults to the classic look. It's
still work in progress, which needs to be tested for readability with as
broad sample of exe files as possible. If You are willing to help,
please follow these instructions:

1) Install the attached tarball:

sudo tar xjvf gnome-exe-thumbnailer-faenza.tar.bz2 -C /
sudo gconf-schemas --register gnome-exe-thumbnailer.schemas

2) Manually switch to one of the Faenza icon themes (if it's not set
already), or add Faenza as third parameter to the specific thumbnailer
command:

gconftool --set
/desktop/gnome/thumbnailers/application@x-ms-dos-executable/command --type
string /usr/bin/gnome-exe-thumbnailer.sh %i %o Faenza
gconftool --set /desktop/gnome/thumbnailers/application@x-msdownload/command
--type string /usr/bin/gnome-exe-thumbnailer.sh %i %o Faenza

3) Clear the thumbnail cache and restart Nautilus:

nautilus -q; rm -r ~/.thumbnails; sleep 1; nautilus

4) Test test test. Please report any issues here in the form of attached
screenshot of problematic thumbnails with the hint where to legally
obtain the source exe/dll files (if possible).

[Bug 711030] [NEW] Red stars used for rating may be confusing because of their symbolicism in real world

2011-01-31 Thread Jan Nekvasil
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

Please reconsider the use of the red color for the five-pointed star
used for the applications rating in Software Center. In many countries
in the world (including my, the Czech Rep.), which have experienced long
years of communistic oppression, is the red star symbol of the state
terror and totalitarian injustice. I'm fully aware of the fact that this
type of star is used in many other harmless ways, and I don't blame the
symbol for it's bad name. But the red star gained a reputation similar
to svastika's (originally sun/fire symbol) trough the time.

I'm firmly convinced that lot of people are still feeling certain degree
of unease when they see this symbol somewhere. Some young people from
unaffected parts of world may possibly think that it's something really
cool and rad, but trust me. It isn't.

[Bug 651610] [NEW] Version number for .msi thumbnail is obtained from unreliable source

2010-09-29 Thread Jan Nekvasil
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-exe-thumbnailer

The version number for .msi package thumbnail is currently obtained from
parsed output of file $INPUTFILE, which displays Windows file metadata
(Author, Subject, etc.). This is a very unreliable source, because this
metadata can be easily altered or often doesn't contain version nuber
(in the Subject field) at all. The real version number is hidden in
key ProductVersion of table Property inside the MSI package, which
is in fact a very simple relation database.

Value of this key can be easily obtained by this VB script:

Dim WI, DB, View, Record
Set WI = CreateObject(WindowsInstaller.Installer)
Set DB = WI.OpenDatabase($INPUTFILE,0)
Set View = DB.OpenView(SELECT Value FROM Property WHERE Property =
'ProductVersion')
View.Execute
Wscript.Echo View.Fetch.StringData(1)

but the user must have both Wine and wsh57 (Microsoft Windows Script
Host 5.7) installed, which is rather rare case.

If somebody is able to write simple utility that prints the value of
ProductVersion to standard output, either for w32 (for use with WIne -
minimum dependencies, msi.dll only if possible) or, much better, unix
native, please let us know here.

[Bug 648200] Re: Please provide a copy of the license with the source

2010-09-26 Thread Jan Nekvasil
As the main author of current gnome-exe-thumbnailer, I didn't thought
about the licence yet, but I supposed it should be GPLv3 all the time.
Only a few lines of original code which I found somewhere on
ubuntuforums.org (specifically the main part of that awk voodoo) now
remains in 0.6-0ubuntu1.

Scott Ritchie is reviewing the brand new, yet unreleased version at this
moment, which came with lot of bugfixes and new features as Vista
icons support and basic .msi files thumbnailing with version number
label from extended file properties (more reliable version number from
ProductVersion MSI property will came in next version).

I will ask Scott (I suppose he would be reading this anyway) to hold the
release for a moment and include the proper license. If You please could
wait for that, You would get the license with that release.

Gnome-exe-thumbnailer is my first project that gets packaged, so I'm not
too much experienced with things like that yet.

Thanks for Your understanding

Jan

[Bug 648200] Re: Please provide a copy of the license with the source

2010-09-26 Thread Jan Nekvasil
I just checked the package and found /usr/share/doc/gnome-exe-
thumbnailer/copyright. So the license exits and is LGPL 2.1 (I'm pretty
fine with that). Can this be used for packaging in Fedora?

I can confirm that icotool from icoutils 0.29.1 (released on 2010-02-28)
works, only isn't able to extract only the one icon selected by its
index. Instead it extract all compressed icons, from which can gnome-
exe-thumbnailer easily pick the right one.

[Bug 622220] Re: some .exe files do not show icon

2010-09-19 Thread Jan Nekvasil
XviD-1.0.3-20122004.exe does have an empty string in version resource;
the thumbnailer only tells the sad truth.

QuickGammaV2EN.exe and teracopy.exe are using the generic installer icon
(the same ugly icon which is used by .msi files in WXP), which cannot be
extracted due some bug in icotool. Now what to do? So I made a feature
from bug and supplied a better one. Exifersetup.exe contains only this
icon too, which is used also in Windows.

Extract attached archive please with sudo tar xjvf gnome-exe-
thumbnailer.tar.bz2 -C / and run nautilus -q; rm -r ~/.thumbnails;
sleep 1; nautilus again.

[Bug 643085] [NEW] Icotool does not support compressed image data

2010-09-19 Thread Jan Nekvasil
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: icoutils

Icotool from icoutils 0.26.0-4ubuntu1 on Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick does not
support compressed image data.

Steps to reproduce:

wget http://www.spotify.com/download/Spotify%20Installer.exe
wrestool -x -t 14 'Spotify Installer.exe' icodump.dat
icotool -x icodump.dat

icodump.dat: compressed image data not supported

There is possibly a fix for this, see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-

[Bug 622220] Re: some .exe files do not show icon

2010-09-18 Thread Jan Nekvasil
There are multiple issues with such .exe files; some of them I was able
to resolve in attached modified version of gnome-exe-thumbnailer.sh.

Problem: There are some icons in the file, but none of them is 32x32 or
smaller.
Example: OcsLogon.exe (from OCS Inventory NG)
Solution: Use 48x48 resized to 24x24 (resizing to 50% leads to acceptable
results).

Problem: There is no sane version number in the version number resource.
Example: XviD-1.0.3-20122004.exe
Solution: Just fix my stupid mistake. :)

Problem: icotool reports compressed image data not supported.
Example: peazip-3.2.1.WINDOWS.exe
Possible solution: Use patched icoutils
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=511944); yet to be done.

Please, put the downloaded script in /usr/bin as root and run nautilus
-q; rm -r ~/.thumbnails; sleep 1; nautilus as a normal user and let me
know about the results.

[Bug 635339] [NEW] [Maverick] Configuring displays leads to flickering screen on HP Elitebook 8440p with kernel 2.6.35-20

2010-09-10 Thread Jan Nekvasil
Public bug reported:

In current Maverick with kernel 2.6.35-20 on a HP Elitebook 8440p,
configuring displays with with xrandr or gnome-display-properties leads
to heavy flickering screen, regardless whether on the laptop display or
on an external monitor connected trough D-sub cable. The mouse cursor is
however still visible and responding. The result looks like the good old
out-of-sync problem known from old CRT's - indeed, one of the LCD
monitors which I have tested reports that with OSD text.

Xrandr detects both displays normally as DP1 (laptop) and VGA1 with
correct refresh rates. Before the 2.6.35-20 (which finally fixed bug
#570604) gnome-display-properties didn't work either (resulting in black
screen), but I was able to use xrandr.

[Bug 570604] Re: resume after suspend on HP EliteBook 8440p

2010-09-09 Thread Jan Nekvasil
2.6.35-20.29 kernel from Ubuntu Kernel PPA (or Maverick daily live CD)
fixes suspend/resume for me, but breaks configuring monitors with xrandr
or gnome-display-properties. After applying changes display flickers and
only the pointer is visible. External LCD display reports out-of-range
error. Switching to tty1 and back helps sometimes, sometimes don't.

[Bug 284325] Re: libpng12-0 could do with an extra symlink for compatibility

2010-09-07 Thread Jan Nekvasil
Maverick amd64 Beta; libpng3 1.2.44-1 creates a symlink libpng.so.3 -
libpng12.so.0 in /usr/lib, expecting it to find there. That link is now
broken because of missing target, resulting in 3rd party apps as Phun
complaining about missing libpng.so.3 (which is not phun at all).

The question is which package is broken, whether libpng3 or libpng.
