[Bug 1859290] [NEW] Virtualbox no usb devices

2020-01-11 Thread Jason Straight
Public bug reported:

With virtualbox 6.1 on 20.04 (Whether from repos, or from oracle) usb
devices are not recognized by a user who has been added to vboxusers
group.

I noticed the ubuntu package does not create udev rules file, but oracle
package does, yet they both have the same behavior anyway, and do not
seem to change permissions on newly added usb devices, nor create the
device files with vboxuser group permissions.

Running as root allows access to usb devices, so it seems to be a
permissions issue.

Sounds like shutter would be a prime candidate for someone to make a
snap of? Isn't this the whole reason snaps were created?

[Bug 1069856] Re: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for . Check your device.map.

2016-12-21 Thread Jason Straight
Recently encountered this, and I turned up this page while searching for
solutions, and I hate to turn this into a "forum" post but I wanted to
leave this here for anyone else beating their head against the wall over
this.

On my afflicted system one of the partitions that was part of my btrfs
raid 1 array did not have a type. fdisk, changed the type to Linux and
grub was happy.

[Bug 1547559] Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs

2016-04-20 Thread Jason Straight
Stumbled across this today while searching for a fix for a PC running
16.04 that this is happening on. I don't understand why, but editing
/etc/default/grub to uncomment the line for graphical terminal fixed it.
What that has to do with mounting root I don't know, but that was
certainly the fix.

I noticed that I could hold shift and select the same kernel, with the
same command line options, under the advanced menu and get the system to
boot. Uncommenting #GRUB_TERMINAL=console fixed it.

[Bug 1483975] Re: update-initramfs complains about missing /sbin/fsck.btrfs

btrfs fsck is currently a last resort to recovery of a btrfs filesystem.

You don't want it to run and "fix" as a first resort on reboot with
problems detected.

[Bug 1436330] [NEW] Network Manager doesn't set metric for local networks any more, causing connection issues

2015-03-25 Thread Jason Straight
Public bug reported:

With Vivid, having two connections to the same network subnet is
unstable due to missing metrics for local networks.

Example:

Being connected to 192.168.1.0/24 via both wired and wireless will cause
connectivity issues as sent packets hop between the two interfaces.

It used to be that this wasn't an issue. I would go between work and
home and plug in and my machine would automatically connect to wireless
and it would use the lower metric ethernet interface for all
communications, while the wlan interface would remain connected but
unused.

checked with ps and there are a lot of tasks related to my desktop still

[Bug 1433118] [NEW] Upgrade to 15.04 kwallet passwords for WiFi, VPN, and encrypted drives are not used

2015-03-17 Thread Jason Straight
Public bug reported:

All the passwords are still saved in kwallet, however none of them work
[are used].

Connecting to previously saved VPN's, WiFi networks, and encrypted

encrypted volume passwords to re-enter.

I should probably add that I've reverted to 14.10 (btrfs snapshots) and
exported the wallet to xml and imported it with kf5 kwallet and it still

[Bug 1315969] [NEW] ftp connections via kde apps take extremely long

2014-05-04 Thread Jason Straight
Public bug reported:

There is a long delay starting FTP connections from KDE apps. Same
behavior with krusader, konqueror, rekonq and dolphin.

Immediately after establishing a connection with networkmanager FTP
connections are immediate. After letting some time pass the following
message appears in syslog and the FTP connections (and thus the program
trying to establish the connection) hang upon connect:

May 4 20:25:16 viper1 dbus[568]: [system] Activating service
name='org.freedesktop.nm_dispatcher' (using servicehelper)
May 4 20:25:16 viper1 dbus[568]: [system] Successfully activated service
'org.freedesktop.nm_dispatcher'

Honestly, I'm not sure if this is a dbus, or network manager issue, but
the kde apps are the only ones I've found affected.

After I get this message, I can choose to disconnect via the plasmoid,
then reconnect to the network and FTP connections are instant again, for
a while, until the dbus nm_dispatcher message is logged again.

sftp, fish, and smb all seem to work fine.

2014-04-04 Thread Jason Straight
Thanks for the response.

I've only noticed it with libreoffice.

I run KDE. In my testing I've removed the kde additions for libreoffice,
rm'ed ~/.gtk*, ~/.config/libreoffice, tried changing the theme settings
in kde's gtk settings, and eventually set up a brand new user and opened
libreoffice with the same results.

I want to say it worked prior to last update. But I can't be certain.

I do have a 1080p screen, but my font DPI is not fixed. It is unchecked
in KDE settings.

Strange that I would have it with a newly created user account.

2014-04-04 Thread Jason Straight
Yeah. I did that it worked for that.

Thanks.

I may have another bug to make a report on. With the kde extensions for
libreoffice installed it won't paint/fill the window after loading, and
locks up.

[Bug 1300792] [NEW] libreoffice toolbar icons large and ugly - no matter what theme

2014-04-01 Thread Jason Straight
Public bug reported:

Since the last update to libreoffice, the toolbar icons are too large to
fit right in the toolbar and seems to be using the wrong size of icons
which causes them to be blocky.

I've tried changing the settings in libreoffice between different
libreoffice themes and size and the icon appearance does not change.

[Bug 978120] Re: Toshiba Estudio 230 printer driver bug

2014-03-27 Thread Jason Straight
Thanks to all of you for putting the effort in. I had been away for a
while and came back the other day to a flurry of activity on this after
nearly forgetting about it.

I doubt it'll make any difference as well, but I work for a Toshiba
authorized dealer and will also report it. This problem has existed in
all e-Studio generations.

For the most part, I get around it by using generic PCL drivers, but
that's no good for some of the more advanced features.

[Bug 1249008] [NEW] iwlwifi kernel driver does not obey power saving settings

2013-11-07 Thread Jason Straight
Public bug reported:

Poor ping times (high latency) can be observed after unplugging from a
power source.

To recreate this issue start by disabling power saving and hw encryption
while your laptop is plugged in.

Power saving can be turned off at module load time, or with iwconfig
[dev] power off

rmmod iwldvm iwlwifi modprobe iwlwifi power_save=0 swcrypto=1
power_level=1

Will remove the driver and re-insert with power saving off and sw
encryption on.

start a ping to your router

Watch latency; should be 3ms or so.

Unplug laptop from power and watch latency rise to 60+ ms

To get reliable networking again, either plug laptop back in or re-issue
commands to disable power saving.

Changing the power state of the machine changes the power state of the
nic regardless of setting. What I've found is that setting power saving
to on/off puts the card in power saving state instead of disabling or
enabling based on power source.

If you unplug your machine you must re-issue the commands to disable
power saving.

[Bug 1249008] Re: iwlwifi kernel driver does not obey power saving settings

Maybe this is the intended method for this?

The best fix for the horrid performance this causes is to create a file
in /etc/pm/power.d/ containing the iwconfig wlan0 power off command.

Seems to be related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups-
filters/+bug/978120

Using Toshiba provided drivers due to the included ones not supporting
any finishing options, private print, etc.

Ubuntu Version 13.04
Printer: Toshiba 3510c

Printing using gs renderer causes the printer to print out an error page
with the Ubuntu Font name.

switching to pdftops via `lpadmin -p [printer name] -o pdftops-renderer-
default=pdftops` allows printing but printing from PDF or LibreOffice
has awful delays per page.

I've tried setting the max resolution with lpadmin to 300 which seems to
make no difference in speed.

Printing the particular document from libreoffice that I'm using for
testing takes 25 seconds for the job to start. Multiple pages multiply
the wait time.

I've also saved the document to PDF and printed using okular. The same
delay is present.

[Bug 879091] Re: Held broken packages

2012-06-25 Thread Jason Straight
Mine was due to a PPA package for KDE stuffs that had a version of a
library and that PPA being disable/unavailable after upgrading. librtm
(or some such thing).

Mine was from a dnjl ppa.

So I removed the offending version from the PPA and installed the
official one and was able to install ia32libs again.

[Bug 853570] [NEW] KDE crashes to KDM when using effects only when logging in via KDM (startx works)

2011-09-18 Thread Jason Straight

As the summary says: KDE crashes during loading to KDM when effects are
enabled about 9 out of 10 times.

After logging in the 2nd time after such a crash effects are disabled, I

crashes again.

[Bug 683375] [NEW] kde network manager connects to weak signal access point in multiple node wireless environment

2010-11-30 Thread Jason Straight
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plasma-widget-networkmanagement

KDE network manager connects often to the weaker of two similarly named
SSID's, causing network packet loss. Gnome nm-applet doesn't seem to
suffer from this. Specifying the BSSID would be a possible workaround if
that worked in KDE, that's a whole other bug report.

Is there any hope for KDE/wireless, the kde wireless app has stunk for
years now.

2010-05-10 Thread Jason Straight (LeeJunFan)
RE: Jason, I'm sure you've read about
http://ajaxxx.livejournal.com/62378.html in bug 124406. This makes it
all the more likely to be an Xorg bug. Have you reported it to the Xorg
devs?

I missed this originally, just went and read about it. If my
understanding is right this one only happens when there's mouse input. I
disabled my touchpad and unplugged my mouse and tested and still have
the symptoms.

[Bug 480855] [NEW] useradd says a group that exists does not

2009-11-11 Thread Jason Straight (LeeJunFan)
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: passwd

Karmic i386
ii passwd 1:4.1.4.1-1ubuntu2

When adding a new user to the library system which has MANY users/groups
useradd fails and says that various groups do not exist

r...@libuntu:/etc# useradd -m -s /bin/bash -G cdrom,floppy,audio,video,plugdev
testing123
useradd: group 'cdrom' does not exist
useradd: group 'floppy' does not exist
useradd: group 'audio' does not exist
useradd: group 'video' does not exist
useradd: group 'plugdev' does not exist

However they do exist in /etc/group (I currently have shadowing off to
verify)

r...@libuntu:/etc# groupadd cdrom
groupadd: group 'cdrom' already exists

I can do this:

r...@libuntu:/etc# gpasswd -a testing123 cdrom
Adding user testing123 to group cdrom

This doesn't work either though:

r...@libuntu:/etc# usermod -G cdrom,floppy,audio,video,plugdev testing123
usermod: group 'cdrom' does not exist
usermod: group 'floppy' does not exist
usermod: group 'audio' does not exist
usermod: group 'video' does not exist
usermod: group 'plugdev' does not exist

I've included the group file, there are a lot of users as this is from a public
library where each user gets a $HOME :)

[Bug 461133] Re: karmic: nfs shares are not mounted at boot

2009-11-01 Thread Jason Straight (LeeJunFan)
I think what's going on here is that the first mountall isn't omitting
network filesystems like it should be. I could be wrong - I don't know
how to monitor upstart in a way to debug which of the various mountalls
are being run when it hangs.

However if the network and portmap aren't up then this is usually what
happens.

[Bug 371066] Re: xorg key events not registering causing missed keypresses and sticking key repeats

2009-10-26 Thread Jason Straight (LeeJunFan)
Standard SCIM. Assuming I did everything right it still does it with
ibus.

I installed ibus, chewing, and the gtk/qt parts, started the daemon and
ran:

QT_IM_MODULE=ibus konsole

I assume it worked right because I didn't get the error about the daemon
not running that I did the first time I tried.

ibus documentation seems a little lacking.

[Bug 456954] [NEW] KDE notifications in karmic do not play completely

2009-10-20 Thread Jason Straight (LeeJunFan)
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-runtime

The KDE notifications (knotify?) do not play the complete sounds, only
the first 1-2 seconds of a sound. If you choose to use an external
player such as mplayer it works fine, but still unable to hit the play
button on the configuration page for the event.

for example, if I set powerdevil event for AC unplugged to play
/usr/share/sounds/k3b_error.wav and hit the play button to the left of
the file name it will play about a second of the sound.

Setting the system to use mplayer will allow the actual event to play
completely, but the preview still only plays 1 second. Kalarm seems to
use phonon directly for it's sound events and therefore will not play
the complete sound on an alarm event.

I've tried rm'ing the config files for phonon and knotifyrc from the
.kde/share/config dirs to start with defaults, still does it.

I'm using the xine backend, xine itself (via gui) plays the same file
completely, all other sound works.

Pedro Ângelo,

I added the script I wrote to

[Bug 303595] Re: Gsynaptics loses settings on resume

2009-09-16 Thread Jason Straight (LeeJunFan)
I just wrote a script for /etc/pm/sleep.d that will run gsynaptics-init
for all users with an X session running, so it won't matter if you're
running multiple X sessions :), everyone can have their own settings,
and won't cause a delay with the sleep command while waiting for X to
resume.

Here it is if anyone wants to work/tweak or include it with the
gsynaptics package:

#!/bin/bash

# Only run on resume/thaw
if [[ ${1} =~ (thaw|resume) ]] ; then

  synaptics() {

# sleep to give time for X
sleep 4s

who | while read line ; do
  a=(${line})
  regex=^:[[:digit:]]
  if [[ ${a[1]} =~ $regex ]] ; then
init=sudo -H -u ${a[0]} DISPLAY=${a[1]} gsynaptics-init
  fi
done
  }

  # run in background so sleep doesn't hold up resume
  synaptics
  # disown the job so exiting shell doesn't kill function
  disown %1

fi
