[Bug 607926] [NEW] video players (totem, vlc) crash during video mode change when using Xv and compiz
Public bug reported: If video is playing during a video mode change, the player application will crash, under certain conditions. To reproduce: Using Lucid, nvidia drivers 195, and compiz. Play any video in any video player, such as totem or compiz. While the video is playing, change video mode, either via gnome-display-properties, or xrandr (in some cases it may be necessary to change video mode twice). The video player will crash. What I expect to happen: The video player doesn't crash. Notes: This only happens if compiz is in use; the bug is not present with metacity. It only happens if Xv is used for video; if you turn off Xv via gstreamer-properties, totem will not crash during mode switch (although vlc still will; presumably, it ignores that particular setting). This didn't happen under Jaunty with a similar configuration, and so is a regression. So this looks like some ugly interaction between Xv, compiz, and nvidia. Additional note: The player will also crash if it is active during a suspend-to-RAM/resume operation, presumably because resume involves a video mode change. In that case, however, there is an additional problem, which is that after the resume (only if a video player was running at the time of suspend!), Xorg consumes huge amounts of RAM and CPU time, and system responsiveness is seriously degraded, requiring a complete system restart (restarting Xorg does not suffice). I don't know if this is a different symptom of the same bug or a separate bug. The error message produced by totem when it crashes is: The program 'totem' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'. (Details: serial 507 error_code 11 request_code 133 minor_code 19) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) I will be happy to provide more detailed information of any sort. ** Affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- video players (totem, vlc) crash during video mode change when using Xv and compiz https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/607926 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 600517] Re: dkms is not processing vboxdrv must do manually
Mario, Thanks for replying. So, one consequence of this design decision is that if you select a different kernel from the GRUB boot menu, dkms modules will fail to build for that kernel and subsequently won't load. This creates a negative user experience, if the user (like me) expects to be able to switch freely between between kernel versions. This can be especially harmful if (again, as in my case) a new kernel version introduces a regression, and so I try to boot the old version, but now that version doesn't work either due to not loading kernel modules; the result is that no matter what version I select from GRUB, I have a broken system. So, I would urge you to reconsider that design decision. [Bug 554980] Re: two finger scroll/multitouch not working on lenovo thinkpad w510 having SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad..
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 308191 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/308191 Everyone wants Ubuntu to be as good as it can be. Idealistic notions aside, the fact is that there is a limited amount of manpower to attend to these bugs. So, in the interest of expediting a fix that will be adequate to the largest number of users, I'll compare these bugs: bug 554980 can be fixed with a simple patch to gnome-mouse-properties. In fact, it was working in Jaunty, and this represents a regression. Multitouch emulation is in the system, it works, and it simply needs a GUI to activate it. This could even be done in lucid-updates. bug 308191 touches a lot of packages and much of the required code isn't deployed. There is no way this can be done in Lucid and probably not even in Maverick. Even with a far-off, allegedly superior solution that would resolve bug 308191, the user experience would be exactly the same as if we fixed bug 554980. Genuine multitouch and multitouch emulation, at this point, are indistinguishable to an end user. And while "expert bug fixers" are spending time on a more difficult solution, they are neglecting other, far more serious, bugs. So, we have to choose: if we value a user experience, which enables two- fingered scrolling in the near future, let's fix this bug. If we want to spend years in development creating the ultimate solution, while users get a sub-par operating system, then let's ignore this bug and focus on 308191. In any case, this is not at all my decision to make. I'm just a user to would like to have a solution that works as soon as possible. If the Ubuntu community decides otherwise, so be it. Gursimran: 1. If scroll is invoked with one finger, increase the value of EmulateTwoFingerMinW. Yours is 3, which is very small. A value of 5 works well for me, but your number may vary, depending on your touchpad and your fingers. 2. It's not a fix, it's a workaround. A fix would involve a patch to gnome-mouse-properties. 3. This bug is not about multitouch, but about two-finger scroll. Since my workaround allows two-finger scroll, I think it's a valid workaround. There is another bug for multitouch. If a person wants two-finger scroll, what difference does it make if he gets it through multitouch emulation or through real multitouch? I don't understand your complaint. 4. Pinch/zoom via multitouch are features that depend on application support as well, and to the best of my knowledge no applications support for Ubuntu support these gestures, so this is more than a driver issue. -- two finger scroll/multitouch not working on lenovo thinkpad w510 having SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad.. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/554980 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

These instructions assume that you are using up-to-date Lucid with a Synaptic touch pad: 1. First make sure that you have a Synaptics touch pad. Execute the command: xinput list|grep Synaptics You should see this (or something similar): ⎜SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad id=11 [slave pointer (2)] 2. Then execute the following command (all on one line) to temporarily enable two-finger scrolling via multitouch emulation: synclient TapButton2=3 HorizTwoFingerScroll=1 VertTwoFingerScroll=1 EmulateTwoFingerMinZ=29 EmulateTwoFingerMinW=5 JumpyCursorThreshold=200 If the above command produces an error, you don't have a compatible touchpad. If it doesn't produce an error, but two-finger scroll doesn't work either, try adjusting the value of EmulateTwoFingerMinW and EmulateTwoFingerMinZ in the above command and executing it again. A smaller value in EmulateTwoFingerMinW will accept a narrower touch to activate scrolling. 3. To make changes permanent, follow the instructions in the attached file. ** Attachment added: "11-twofinger.conf" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/51739472/11-twofinger.conf -- two finger scroll/multitouch not working on lenovo thinkpad w510 having SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad.. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/554980 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

By "guest session" I mean in particular the temporary session created and disposed of on the fly by selecting "Guest session" from the session menu. First, SUDO Running sudo from a command prompt within a guest session produces the message: sudo: Unable to change to sudoers gid: Operation not permitted My understanding is that this is a result of SELinux configuration. This, then, could be understood as security-based design decision, rather than a bug. I am using the default SELinux configuration. Now, GKSUDO Running a program through gksudo (such as synaptic or most program on the System|Administration menu) results in a pause of a few seconds, while the system wait cursor spins, followed by nothing. No error message is returned, no visible program is run. I expect that I will be prompted for a password or notified that I don't have permission to execute this command, but that isn't what happens. This is definitely a bug, as the user should be given some kind of feedback on his action. This is probably not the right package to report this bug in. It seems to be more of an overall security configuration issue. Please provide suggestions if you think this bug should be sent elsewhere. [Bug 603680] [NEW] Magnifier screen stays split even after exit
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-mag After quitting magnifier, the screen stays split, and mouse behavior is abnormal. In particular, the apparent visual position of the cursor does not correspond to where the clicks actually happen. WHAT I EXPECT TO HAPPEN: When running magnifier, the screen is split between magnified and non-magnified views. After quitting magnifier, the screen should be restored to a single non-magnified pane. The bottom pane (or right pane, in the case of vertical split) contains my desktop icons, gnome-panel, and mouse pointer etc. However, clicking on an icon visible in the bottom pane has the effect of clicking on what would be in the bottom half of the screen, if the whole desktop were visible. See enclosed screen shot. WHY THIS IS BAD: Beyond the fact that magnifier doesn't work when it's running, it also leaves the system in an unusable state. WORKAROUND: I can restore the screen to a normal mode by switching video mode. WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS: I am able to modify the entry in the gnome- keybindings-properties window, but pressing the designated key does not perform any action. That is, the magnifier does not open. Changing the hotkeys for other actions works okay. WHY THIS IS BAD: This is confusing and misleading behavior, and can be especially damaging for people who need the accessibility features. Re: [Bug 599452] Re: [pineviewgm] X crash after restore from hibernate
The kernel 2.6.32-23-generic was recently (a few days ago) pushed on Lucid on since then I haven't had any crashes, despite my attempts to reproduce it. The problem seems to be solved with that kernel release, although it would be nice if someone else could verify it. I'd be happy to try out Maverick and see if it suffers from a similar problem. Unfortunately, it won't be so easy, since you can't hibernate from a LiveCD boot. Is it worthwhile to see if Maverick runs in low-graphics mode even without hibernating? Also, why does PGTBL_ER: 0x03 worry you? Should I do more testing in relation to that? [Bug 462166] Re: two-finger scrolling doesn't work
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 308191 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/308191 I disagree that this is a duplicate. This bug deals with two-finger scrolling, which is easy to fix with a workaround. The workaround works for me and many other people, on any synaptics touchpad. Bug 308191 is different; it is related to support of multitouch, a particular hardware feature that is not present in all touchpads. That bug is essentially asking for support for additional hardware, which is much more complicated than just turning on two-finger scrolling support, which is already present in the driver. -- two-finger scrolling doesn't work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/462166 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 599452] [NEW] X crash after restore from hibernate with Intel graphics
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel Lucid crashes after resume from hibernate. The crash is not immediate, but usually occurs within five minutes after resume, usually when starting a program, but I can't identify the specific behavior that directly triggers the crash (besides hibernation itself). The crash is 100% reproducible. The system is completely stable if I never hibernate. Resume from suspend to RAM also works perfectly, and the system remains stable: it is only suspend to disk that triggers the crash. I'm using an HP Mini 210, which has Intel N10 graphics, using the i915 driver. There are other, similar bugs involving Intel graphics on Lucid, such as bug 528467 and bug 554569, but these bugs don't specifically deal with a crash after hibernate, so I am filing a new bug report. This may be related to the known X crashes related to KMS documented here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes As suggested at that address, I enabled and disabled KMS. The crash happens at the same time in either case, but the symptoms are slightly different: with KMS enabled, the crash results in the "X is running in low graphics mode" dialog box; I can easily access virtual terminals, and although X will not start, the computer remains functional. With KMS disabled, the crash results in a loop where the screen is turned on and off, virtual terminals are not accessible, and nothing is displayed. Using xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.1-3ubuntu5 Please let me know if there's any additional information I can provide. My report differs from the previous reports, though, in that the screen does not totally hang. Instead, X restarts into "recovery" mode. Virtual terminal still work, so I am able to do Ctrl-F1, look at dmesg, etc. Subsequent attempts to restart X fail. I didn't have this problem running fully updated Karmic on the same machine. This started happening with Lucid, which I just installed. It is pretty much a deal-breaker, and it renders the system unusable. -- display freezes, [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... [Bug 516329] Re: TouchPad buttons don't work on HP Mini 210 (1030NR)
This bug also applies to the HP Mini 210-1010NR model. Just to recap my own experience: Out of the box, the actual "buttons" (which are physically part of the pad area) don't work. To effectuate a click, one has to tap on the pad. Right click is very hard, as one has to tap on the lower right corner of the pad; it usually takes me a few tries. Two-fingered scrolling does not work, but edge scrolling does. This is my workaround: I discovered that by applying the following settings via synclient, I can achieve two-fingered scrolling, and a two- fingered tap will be interpreted as a right-click. (However, two- fingered scrolling is still a disabled option in gnome-mouse-mouse- properties.) This isn't a fix to this bug, but it might help people who are having trouble. This command will do it: synclient TapButton2=3 HorizTwoFingerScroll=1 VertTwoFingerScroll=1 EmulateTwoFingerMinZ=29 EmulateTwoFingerMinW=5 By the way, what is the "correct" way to apply these settings automatically at start up? Does one have to edit /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/* or is there a per-user way of applying these settings other than invoking synclient in .xinitrc? Any help would be appreciated. -- TouchPad buttons don't work on HP Mini 210 (1030NR) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/516329 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 558847] Re: Contact with more than one finger on touchpad produces crazy frenetic cursor
Marking as invalid. Please ignore; this turned out to be interference from Windows. More specifically: the problem was caused by the following sequence of events: booting into Windows, disabling the touchpad via the above- described method, and rebooting the system into Ubuntu. The problem can be fixed by powering down the system. So, this is probably not a bug, but is very strange behavior nonetheless. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- Contact with more than one finger on touchpad produces crazy frenetic cursor https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/558847 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 402017] Re: GDM login theme change when using accessibility features
This still happens under Lucid Beta 2, as well. I should point out that (on my machine, at least) logging in and then logging back out, or rebooting the machine, or restarting X, results in the theme and colors returning to normal. It's not necessary to edit config files. That is, the unexpected theming is only temporary. Nevertheless, this is a weird usability bug, and disconcerting to a new user. -- GDM login theme change when using accessibility features https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/402017 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 558847] [NEW] Contact with more than one finger on touchpad produces crazy frenetic cursor
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics I've just installed Lucid Beta 2 on an HP Mini 1010nr. There is some unusual behavior involving the Synaptics touchpad. If the user contacts the touchpad with more than one finger at a time, the cursor will "go crazy" and bounce around the screen in an uncontrolled way. If you were dragging an icon at the time, it will probably end up somewhere random. This is different from the behavior under Karmic running on the same machine. Under Karmic, if the user accidentally uses more than one finger, the first finger is ignored. This behavior is pretty standard for non-multitouch touchpads. I consider this an important regression. Accidental touches with another finger are pretty common when using a touchpad, and this bug means that such touches produces often unpredictable results. The wild dancing of the cursor is also ugly and obviously wrong to any user, so it produces a bad impression. Some other notes that may be important: I believe that the touchpad on this system is actually multitouch-capable, even though Ubuntu treats it as singletouch-only. When running Windows 7 on the same machine, two-fingered scrolling is supported, but not under Ubuntu. Another important difference between Lucid's and Karmic's handling of the touchpad has to do with a feature that I hadn't seen before. My touchpad has a small red light in the upper left. When running under Windows with the OEM's drivers, tapping that area of the touchpad will temporarily disable the touchpad, and the light will illuminate. Tapping that area again will re-enable the touchpad. This feature obviously doesn't work under Ubuntu. Under Karmic, the light that indicates a disabled touchpad was always off. Under Lucid, however, the light is always on, even though the touchpad is enabled (and producing the above- mentioned crazy jumping of the cursor). This suggests to me that there is some confusion with the driver. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: regression -- Contact with more than one finger on touchpad produces crazy frenetic cursor https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/558847 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness
I believe that this problem can be alleviated by using Con Kolivas's BFS scheduler instead of the stock scheduler. There are PPAs on Launchpad where you can get kernels with the BFS scheduler for Lucid and Karmic. On my system, it really seems to make the system much more reponsive. I hope that the Linux kernel team consider including the BFS scheduler as an option in future kernel releases, and until then I think the Ubuntu team should consider making a BFS kernel the default for the desktop version of Ubuntu. -- Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/131094 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close"
Why should the user have to go through gconf-editor to change this? Average user doesn't know about gconf-editor, and certainly doesn't know what key to modify. I'm not opposed to this kind of change, but it should be changable from the Settings|Appearance panel, which is the natural place for this kind of thing. You should be able to set the orientation and ordering of the frame controls in the same place that you set the size of the mouse cursor, that is, it should be theme-dependant. -- [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 531549] [NEW] Simple-ccsm shouldn't appear in System|Preferences
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: simple-ccsm If simple-ccsm is installed, it is accessible via System|Preferences|Appearance|Visual Effects|Custom. Therefore, it is not necessary to have simple-ccsm appear as its own entry in the System|Preferences menu. It should be removed. Its presence is redundant and can only confuse the user. In addition, the installation of simple-ccsm should not require that the (non-simple) ccsm be displayed in System|Preferences. For novice users, it's best if there is only one visible way to modify the compiz settings. This can be accomplished either by removing ccsm from the list of simple-ccsm's dependencies, or by suppressing the display of ccsm unless explicitly requested. ** Affects: simple-ccsm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Simple-ccsm shouldn't appear in System|Preferences https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/531549 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
