[Bug 1011073] Re: NetworkManager submenus sometimes unpopulated

2012-09-21 Thread Jim Leinweber
Same comment that I added to #9658985: The easiest workaround for this
bug I've found is to uncheck Enable Networking on the network
dropdown, wait a few seconds, and pick Enable networking. This seems
to reliably toggle the missing entries back onto the menus, both wifi
and VPN. I see this on multiple ubuntu boxes, particularly starting
with 12.04, but not all of them.

[Bug 854388] Re: precise alpha 1 live CD video corruption on nvidia GeForce 6150SE

2012-03-26 Thread Jim Leinweber
Tried the 2012-03-25 precise daily live CD, with mixed results.
1) the unity task bar doesn't display on the live desktop. It's there, because
you can e.g. guess at the location of say firefox it launches. The ubiquity
installer runs reasonably well if you dare to try it.

2) booting the resulting disk install leads to login failure with unity
3D but works OK (albeit sluggishly) with unity 2D. In 3D, the cursor is
OK, and VTY switching works, as do text logins, but the nouveau+compiz
video is still very corrupt - checkerboard-like patterns in shades of
desktop purple.

3) the nvidia current binary driver ran OK for about 40 minutes (gnome-
terminal, firefox, google chrome, libreoffice writer, totem) but died
when I tried to launch Libreoffice calc.

So it's getting better, but we're not quite back to the video
functionality of 11.04 yet.

[Bug 964576] [NEW] login fails to bring up unity 3D (2D OK)

2012-03-25 Thread Jim Leinweber
Public bug reported:

Had a working install of ubuntu 12.04 precise pangolin beta 1 + patches on an
Acer aspire one 722 netbook (amd64, integrated readeon graphics).
Ran update-manager did partial upgrade on Saturday 2012-03-24, including
kernel 3.2.0-20.
Afterwards, GUI login fails to bring up the unity interface. The cursor works,
vty switching works, and unity 2D logins work.  Kernel version doesn't matter;
the results are the same with 3.2.0-17 and 3.2.0-20.
/var/log.Xorg.0.log contains new error messages such as:

[Bug 961482] Re: 3.2.0-19 kernel fails to boot (-18 OK)

2012-03-23 Thread Jim Leinweber
The LKML discussion was along the lines I anticipated: evidently
different subsets of machines crash with and without the patch, leaving
the poor kernel maintainers with a dilemma. Clearly a more complex if
condition is called for, if only what it needs to be can be worked out.
I presume it's related to either hardware or BIOS bugs and/or quirks.

[Bug 961482] Re: 3.2.0-19 kernel fails to boot (-18 OK)

2012-03-22 Thread Jim Leinweber
Wow, this bug is getting a lot of attention! Thanks, everyone.

Joseph Salisbury asked:
When the system hangs, can you see if you can access some of the other ttys?

Sorry, it hangs too early for VTY switching. Specifically, the last two
messages from around 1.47 seconds into boot are tagged: start_kernel
and gs_change. If the more specific address info would be useful I
can transcribe the hex.

Joseph also asks:
... we could run a kernel bisect ...

Yes, I could install and try a series of other kernels. It's a work
laptop, and I don't have time to build them from source, but I can run
boot experiments with kernels someone else is compiling to try and pin
this down.

In response to GNAServicesInc, yes bug 961823 sounds like the same one
as mine. It's the same symptoms, anyway. The recovery boot options
are noisier than the default boot and more informative. What I did to
use apport-bug was first run dpkg-query -l linux* to identify the
full name of the kernel package I wanted to complain about.

Brad Figg notes:
... there is a newer version of the development kernel ...

I ran update-manager again, installed the 3.2.0-20 kernel, and it has
the same symptoms.

Joseph Salisbury asks:
... would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel?
I installed 3.3.0-030300.201203182135 and got a kernel panic at 0.32s into boot
instead. Different, but not better.

Does anyone know if the SerialConsoleHowto document results in not
just grub but also the kernel logging out a serial port? Maybe I could
scrounge up a null modem cable and use kermit on another PC to capture
the boot messages?

gnaservicesinc's screenshot from his daily/current kernel try is pretty
much identical to what I get with the 3.3.0 mainline kernel from 3/18.

In case it wasn't obvious from the attachments, I'm using the 64-bit
amd64 kernels, not the 32-bit i386 kernels.

[Bug 961482] [NEW] 3.2.0-19 kernel fails to boot (-18 OK)

2012-03-21 Thread Jim Leinweber
Public bug reported:

Ran sudo update-manager at 2012-03-02 14:45 UTC, installing a linux

in either normal or recovery mode, wedging around 1.7 seconds in. The
previous 3.2.0-18 kernel is fine, and is being used to submit this
report.

I get a similar lock up on an acer aspire one 722, but only when the
atheros ethernet driver and the broadcom wifi are both loaded and wifi
is in use.

[Bug 858459] Re: atl1c locks up on boot when network cable is unplugged

2011-12-02 Thread Jim Leinweber
I get keyboard / mouse lockups on an acer aspire one 722 if both the
atl1c atheros ethernet driver and the broadcom wifi driver are loaded.
No lockup for ethernet only; no lockup for wifi only. Happens on 11.10
and 12.04 alpha 1.

2011-12-01 Thread Jim Leinweber
Still corrupt on the 12/1 desktop-amd64 live boot. Clicking on the
approximate location of the search icon causes a repeated array of about
6 squashed ovals to run down the top half of the screen. C-A-F2
switches to a text console. Cursor movement is normal.

2011-11-23 Thread Jim Leinweber
The nvidia binary driver 290.10 improves the situation considerably, though not
to the point I can switch to Oneiric yet:
   * works: firefox, gnome-terminal, google chrome (beta), system settings,
ubuntu software center, synaptic, ...
   * fails: oocalc (system becomes unusable)
Grub 2 seems to have issues too.

2011-10-26 Thread Jim Leinweber
The nvidia binary 285.05.09 driver doesn't completely solve the problem either.
Large windows display as all white; if you resize them small enough they
display again. E.g. the default terminal window size is OK, but 3x that size
is not.
Trying to switch users is a complete disaster; the screen never recovers from
that.

2011-10-06 Thread Jim Leinweber
Tried a default text-mode install from a beta-2 alternate x64 CD. The
Nouveau driver ran the login screen OK, but still have video corruption
problems after login.

Ran apt-get install nvidia-current; the vendor driver did somewhat
better, in that the unity bar on the left and task bar at the top both
displayed and worked. Small windows such as a default terminal or the
clock settings dialogue, or the logout dialog were OK. Large windows
such as appearance settings, firefox, or an enlarged terminal window
displayed solid white, with no visible content. Navigation controls
might overlay briefly.

menus work, startup and shutdown splash screens work, text consoles
work, in X the mouse is OK, but the unity bar, task bar, and application

[Bug 854388] [NEW] oneiric beta 1 live CD video corruption on nvidia GeForce 6150SE

2011-09-19 Thread Jim Leinweber
Public bug reported:

I've been testing 11.10 alpha and beta images on various hardware platforms I
have access to. The only one I'm having trouble with is a Dell Inspiron 531
system unit hooked to an HP w2408h LCD display. Oneiric beta 1 and the
9/16/2011 daily image live 64-bit CD's produce massive video corruption on the
try ubuntu boot choice. Switching to a console terminal via Ctrl-Alt-F1
works fine.
I'll attach an Xorg.0.log file from the most recent boot attempt. The problem
seems to be with rendering; e.g. lots of blocky lines running down the left
hand side of the screen. Left clicking in regions where unity icons might be
expected seems to launch applications, but the app windows display very
squished and completely unusable. The X cursor is normal and moves normally
around the entire screen in response to the mouse.

[Bug 758014] Re: ubuntu natty beta nvidia regression - maximize white hang

2011-04-15 Thread Jim Leinweber
I ran a fresh install of the ubuntu amd64 20110414 daily build, and the
situation for beta2 is similar to beta1.
* Nouveau driver seems to work OK, classic gnome interface only, as its
unaccelerated
* nvidia driver has issues on this Dell Inspiron 530 with the nvidia GeForce
6150SE nForce 430 (C61) chip.

The current behavior is:
  * most application windows draw as solid white
  * gnome terminal is readable ordinary size, but solid white maximized
  * firefox windows are solid white, both ordinary and maximized. However, if
I use Alt-D to type url stuff, the search completion overlay is visible, while
the main page canvas remains solid white
  * 5 minutes of opening and closing apps and maximizing and minimizing windows
didn't produce a lockup

So it improved, but not to the point of being usable. If anyone wants
particular log files or experiments, please ask.
There are no exciting error messages obvious in
/var/log{syslog,kern.log,Xorg.0.log}.

I didn't have any problem with booting; I got it around the time of
running update-manager for beta1 - beta2.

[Bug 757929] Re: natty beta upgrade regression - nvidia kernel oops at ffffffffa1070bfa

2011-04-11 Thread Jim Leinweber
The attached files are not from the 11.04 upgrade, as that is
sufficiently unresponsive after the kernel oops that I had to reinstall
a copy of ubuntu 10.10 on the spare disk partition. So believe the
hardware portions but not the software.

This occurred immediately after the upgrade from ubuntu 10.10 -- ubuntu
11.04 beta 1 (amd64). A from-scratch install of ubuntu 11.04 beta 1 on
yet a third partition with the nouveau driver does not exhibit this
oops. Actually, it doesn't have this oops when the restricted nvidia
driver is installed either, but there is a different problem with that
I'll file another bug against.

The kernel backtrace as listed in /var/log/syslog is:

[Bug 758014] [NEW] ubuntu natty beta nvidia regression - maximize white hang

2011-04-11 Thread Jim Leinweber
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

A fresh install of ubuntu beta from the amd64 daily CD of 20110408 has
nvidia display issues on a Dell inspiron 531.

The ubuntu-bug attached files are from a parallel 10.10 install, and
should only be used for illustrating the hardware situation.

The symptom is completely reproducible: boot kernel 2.6.38-8-generic amd64
with the binary nvidia driver, launch a process such as gnome-terminal or
firefox, maximize the window. The screen goes to solid white. Un-maximizing
reverts to a normal display. After 2-3 maximize/un-maximize cycles the display
locks up.
Ctrl-Alt-F1 and then Ctrl-Alt-Del results in the expected switch to a terminal
and a reboot, so the keyboard is still responsive.

This only happens with the binary nvidia driver, not with the open-
source nouveau driver. However, the nouveau driver lacks the
acceleration needed to run the new unity interface.

This is the same hardware (Dell inspiron system unit, HP LCD display) as in bug
#757929, but a different problem.
(That bug is a kernel oops after a 10.10 - 11.04 upgrade; this problem is a
display freeze from a fresh 11.04 install.)

the error. Best guess: changing the repository.

The idaho computer I don't have direct access to, which probably has
some legacy intel software RAID stuff lurking on disks somewhere in
spite of repartion/quick format/reinstall of OS (32-bit vista - 64

dmraid workaround. Does anyone know where intel puts its software raid

[Bug 470016] [NEW] ubuntu karmic firefox 3.5.4 slow on ecryptfs

2009-11-01 Thread Jim Leinweber
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

Firefox 3.5.4 is incredibly slow running on ubuntu 9.10 karmic, fresh

[Bug 459054] Re: ubiquity partition step does not show some hard drives

2009-10-29 Thread Jim Leinweber
Just tested the i386 desktop CD under vmware; it saw two virtual SCSI
disk, like it should. So for me, it's looking fixed.

I'm wondering if there are multiple issues going on. The release
candidate definitely had the regression; but I'm wondering if
themusicalduck's and Kaahn1!s problem is something different, maybe a
fakeraid controller issue or something.

[Bug 459054] Re: ubiquity partition step does not show some hard drives

2009-10-27 Thread Jim Leinweber
It looks like the ubiquity in the 10/27/2009 daily build (karmic-
desktop-amd64.iso, sha256 sum
69530b9166767668b7ab36ad7475d02f4fbe35da42516a46a6a698abc0f91a09) fixes
the problem, at least under vmware.

I fed it dual IDE and dual SCSI virtual disks, and it showed the first
disk both times.

The lack of side by side on the win7 pro system I mention Sunday night
10/25 was probably due to the 10/22 CD version fixating on some random
USB device around /dev/sdh or so which offered block access, but was not
a hard drive, and contained no formatted data partitions. Testing the
10/27 daily build DVD I got side by side if the sda device contained a
formatted partition, but only erase and free space and manual if
it was either blank (no partition table) or had unformatted partitions
of some type. If I picked the largest contiguous free space,
depending on what I'd been doing with fdisk behind it's back from a
terminal window it might shift focus to sdb. It's looking back to
normal, and even subtly smart about presenting the most relevant options
to the user.

I'll retest one of the problem physical systems when I get home.

[Bug 459054] Re: ubiquity partition step does not show first hard drive

2009-10-25 Thread Jim Leinweber
The 9.10RC Karmic Koala ubiquity disk partitioning steps (#4, #5 in the
installation screens) seem to have regressions when booting the AMD64
ubuntu live desktop CD on systems with multiple disks.

On one system, the side by side radio button only showed sdc. Erase
would allow choosing sda, sdb, or sdc. The manual partitioning option
showed all partitions on all three drives and seemed normal.

On another system, recently loaded with windows 7 professional on a 250
GB sda, the side by side radio button line was missing entirely, and
the manual option didn't show either the sda or the sdb SATA disk drives
(intel chipset).

It looked normal on a system with only 1 SATA drive.
