[Bug 854388] Re: precise alpha 1 live CD video corruption on nvidia GeForce 6150SE
Tried the 2012-03-25 precise daily live CD, with mixed results. 1) the unity task bar doesn't display on the live desktop. It's there, because you can e.g. guess at the location of say firefox it launches. The ubiquity installer runs reasonably well if you dare to try it. 2) booting the resulting disk install leads to login failure with unity 3D but works OK (albeit sluggishly) with unity 2D. In 3D, the cursor is OK, and VTY switching works, as do text logins, but the nouveau+compiz video is still very corrupt - checkerboard-like patterns in shades of desktop purple. 3) the nvidia current binary driver ran OK for about 40 minutes (gnome- terminal, firefox, google chrome, libreoffice writer, totem) but died when I tried to launch Libreoffice calc. So it's getting better, but we're not quite back to the video functionality of 11.04 yet. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/854388 Title: precise alpha 1 live CD video corruption on nvidia GeForce 6150SE To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/854388/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 961482] Re: 3.2.0-19 kernel fails to boot (-18 OK)
Wow, this bug is getting a lot of attention! Thanks, everyone. Joseph Salisbury asked: When the system hangs, can you see if you can access some of the other ttys? Sorry, it hangs too early for VTY switching. Specifically, the last two messages from around 1.47 seconds into boot are tagged: start_kernel and gs_change. If the more specific address info would be useful I can transcribe the hex. Joseph also asks: ... we could run a kernel bisect ... Yes, I could install and try a series of other kernels. It's a work laptop, and I don't have time to build them from source, but I can run boot experiments with kernels someone else is compiling to try and pin this down. In response to GNAServicesInc, yes bug 961823 sounds like the same one as mine. It's the same symptoms, anyway. The recovery boot options are noisier than the default boot and more informative. What I did to use apport-bug was first run dpkg-query -l linux* to identify the full name of the kernel package I wanted to complain about. Brad Figg notes: ... there is a newer version of the development kernel ... I ran update-manager again, installed the 3.2.0-20 kernel, and it has the same symptoms. Joseph Salisbury asks: ... would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? I installed 3.3.0-030300.201203182135 and got a kernel panic at 0.32s into boot instead. Different, but not better. Does anyone know if the SerialConsoleHowto document results in not just grub but also the kernel logging out a serial port? Maybe I could scrounge up a null modem cable and use kermit on another PC to capture the boot messages? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/961482 Title: 3.2.0-19 kernel fails to boot (-18 OK) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/961482/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The nvidia binary 285.05.09 driver doesn't completely solve the problem either. Large windows display as all white; if you resize them small enough they display again. I presume this means that vesa modes are OK as long as acceleration hardware isn't in use. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/854388 Title: oneiric beta 1 live CD video corruption on nvidia GeForce 6150SE To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/854388/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 854388] [NEW] oneiric beta 1 live CD video corruption on nvidia GeForce 6150SE
Public bug reported: I've been testing 11.10 alpha and beta images on various hardware platforms I have access to. The only one I'm having trouble with is a Dell Inspiron 531 system unit hooked to an HP w2408h LCD display. Oneiric beta 1 and the 9/16/2011 daily image live 64-bit CD's produce massive video corruption on the try ubuntu boot choice. Switching to a console terminal via Ctrl-Alt-F1 works fine. I'll attach an Xorg.0.log file from the most recent boot attempt. The problem seems to be with rendering; e.g. lots of blocky lines running down the left hand side of the screen. Left clicking in regions where unity icons might be expected seems to launch applications, but the app windows display very squished and completely unusable. The X cursor is normal and moves normally around the entire screen in response to the mouse. [Bug 758014] Re: ubuntu natty beta nvidia regression - maximize white hang
I ran a fresh install of the ubuntu amd64 20110414 daily build, and the situation for beta2 is similar to beta1. * Nouveau driver seems to work OK, classic gnome interface only, as its unaccelerated * nvidia driver has issues on this Dell Inspiron 530 with the nvidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 (C61) chip. The current behavior is: * most application windows draw as solid white * gnome terminal is readable ordinary size, but solid white maximized * firefox windows are solid white, both ordinary and maximized. However, if I use Alt-D to type url stuff, the search completion overlay is visible, while the main page canvas remains solid white * 5 minutes of opening and closing apps and maximizing and minimizing windows didn't produce a lockup So it improved, but not to the point of being usable. If anyone wants particular log files or experiments, please ask. There are no exciting error messages obvious in /var/log{syslog,kern.log,Xorg.0.log}. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/758014 Title: ubuntu natty beta nvidia regression - maximize white hang -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 757929] Re: natty beta upgrade regression - nvidia kernel oops at ffffffffa1070bfa
The attached files are not from the 11.04 upgrade, as that is sufficiently unresponsive after the kernel oops that I had to reinstall a copy of ubuntu 10.10 on the spare disk partition. So believe the hardware portions but not the software. This occurred immediately after the upgrade from ubuntu 10.10 -- ubuntu 11.04 beta 1 (amd64). A from-scratch install of ubuntu 11.04 beta 1 on yet a third partition with the nouveau driver does not exhibit this oops. [Bug 758014] [NEW] ubuntu natty beta nvidia regression - maximize white hang
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg A fresh install of ubuntu beta from the amd64 daily CD of 20110408 has nvidia display issues on a Dell inspiron 531. The ubuntu-bug attached files are from a parallel 10.10 install, and should only be used for illustrating the hardware situation. The symptom is completely reproducible: boot kernel 2.6.38-8-generic amd64 with the binary nvidia driver, launch a process such as gnome-terminal or firefox, maximize the window. The screen goes to solid white. Un-maximizing reverts to a normal display. After 2-3 maximize/un-maximize cycles the display locks up. Ctrl-Alt-F1 and then Ctrl-Alt-Del results in the expected switch to a terminal and a reboot, so the keyboard is still responsive. This only happens with the binary nvidia driver, not with the open- source nouveau driver. However, the nouveau driver lacks the acceleration needed to run the new unity interface. This is the same hardware (Dell inspiron system unit, HP LCD display) as in bug #757929, but a different problem. (That bug is a kernel oops after a 10.10 - 11.04 upgrade; this problem is a display freeze from a fresh 11.04 install.) [Bug 459054] Re: ubiquity partition step does not show some hard drives
It looks like the ubiquity in the 10/27/2009 daily build (karmic- desktop-amd64.iso, sha256 sum 69530b9166767668b7ab36ad7475d02f4fbe35da42516a46a6a698abc0f91a09) fixes the problem, at least under vmware. I fed it dual IDE and dual SCSI virtual disks, and it showed the first disk both times. The lack of side by side on the win7 pro system I mention Sunday night 10/25 was probably due to the 10/22 CD version fixating on some random USB device around /dev/sdh or so which offered block access, but was not a hard drive, and contained no formatted data partitions. Testing the 10/27 daily build DVD I got side by side if the sda device contained a formatted partition, but only erase and free space and manual if it was either blank (no partition table) or had unformatted partitions of some type. If I picked the largest contiguous free space, depending on what I'd been doing with fdisk behind it's back from a terminal window it might shift focus to sdb. It's looking back to normal, and even subtly smart about presenting the most relevant options to the user. I'll retest one of the problem physical systems when I get home. -- ubiquity partition step does not show some hard drives https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/459054 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Also OK on a physical Dell Inspiron 531s with dual SATA drives, as expected. -- ubiquity partition step does not show some hard drives https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/459054 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 459054] Re: ubiquity partition step does not show first hard drive
The 9.10RC Karmic Koala ubiquity disk partitioning steps (#4, #5 in the installation screens) seem to have regressions when booting the AMD64 ubuntu live desktop CD on systems with multiple disks. On one system, the side by side radio button only showed sdc. Erase would allow choosing sda, sdb, or sdc. The manual partitioning option showed all partitions on all three drives and seemed normal. On another system, recently loaded with windows 7 professional on a 250 GB sda, the side by side radio button line was missing entirely, and the manual option didn't show either the sda or the sdb SATA disk drives (intel chipset). It looked normal on a system with only 1 SATA drive. ** Changed in: ubiquity (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed -- ubiquity partition step does not show first hard drive https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/459054 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 449251] Re: ubuntu karmic beta - ATI video failure on boot with kernel 2.6.31-13
The xorg 1:7.4+3ubuntu5 version installed 2009-10-13 seems to fix the regression.
