Re: [Bug 1456789] Re: restarting services hangs on systemd-tty-ask-password-agent

2016-04-22 Thread Joel Goguen
I was having so many problems with Ubuntu, bugs take so long to get
responses, and almost always it's solved by upgrading the package, so I
saved myself a bunch of hassle by just switching to Arch.

[Bug 1456789] Re: restarting services hangs on systemd-tty-ask-password-agent

2015-06-15 Thread Joel Goguen
Ahh, yes, whoops. I tried again with 'systemctl restart network-manager'
(and, just in case, I also tried 'systemctl restart network-
manager.service') and the behaviour is identical to smbd et. al. - it
hangs with subprocesses /bin/systemd-tty-ask-password-agent and
/usr/bin/pkttyagent.

[Bug 1456789] Re: restarting services hangs on systemd-tty-ask-password-agent

2015-06-12 Thread Joel Goguen
I haven't extensively tested all services, but it looks like anything
set up similarly to smbd. Some have different behaviour, such as
network-manager which immediately returns with:

% sudo restart network-manager
[sudo] password for jgoguen:
restart: Unable to connect to Upstart: Failed to connect to socket
/com/ubuntu/upstart: Connection refused

But in general it looks like these services all fail. If the NM one is
actually something else I'll happily submit another bug against the
network-manager package.

The commands you asked for:

% systemctl list-jobs
No jobs running.

% systemctl status|head

[Bug 1456789] [NEW] Unable to restart services from scripts

2015-05-19 Thread Joel Goguen
Public bug reported:

I have a script run as root from cron that tweaks smb.conf and restarts
smbd and winbind. Problem is, starting today after working perfectly up
till yesterday, this script now hangs on Ubuntu 15.04. When run from
cron, the process tree looks like this:

service smbd restart
 \_ systemctl restart smbd.service
  \_ /bin/systemd-tty-ask-password-agent --watch
  \_ /usr/bin/pkttyagent --notify-fd 5 --fallback

Run from a shell via sudo, same thing except the process tree
(obviously) includes the sudo command. It times out after 5 minutes,
causing the script to fail. If I manually kill the processes, it fails
faster.

The simplest possible scripts that reproduce this, run as root or
through cron or via sudo, are:

#!/bin/sh
service smbd restart

#!/bin/sh
systemctl restart smbd.service

Using 'service', this works perfectly on Ubuntu 14.04 and 14.10, and
until this morning worked perfectly on 15.04 as well.

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System -
About Ubuntu
Ubuntu 15.04
2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname' or
by checking in Software Center
systemd 219-7ubuntu5
samba 2:4.1.13+dfsg-4ubuntu3
3) What you expected to happen
Services to restart
4) What happened instead
Services didn't restart, 'systemctl' hung

[Bug 416905] Re: Hewlett-Packard HP Pavilion dv2500 Notebook PC hibernate/resume failure

2010-03-15 Thread Joel Goguen
I don't know if apport-collected is actually valid. I tried to run
apport-collect -p linux 416905 but was told that the -p option no
longer exists and the syntax is now apport-gtk bug number. When I
ran apport-collect 416905, apport crashed with an error that I
eventually gave up trying to copy (reasons explained below) and failed
to connect to the DB (even though my Internet connection appeared
otherwise fine) when apport tried to report that crash.

Entering hibernation seemed to go fine. When I came back out of
hibernation, the screen was flickering very badly, as if the vertical
refresh wasn't matching what the monitor was using. This made it hard
to see what was going on, but I had a Terminal window open before
hibernating so I used that to enter the apport-collect commands. The
mouse cursor was barely visible through this and didn't always register
that I had clicked on something. Reading results was also difficult.
When I tried to shut down, the system unloaded GNOME fine, but the
shutdown splash screen never appeared and after almost 10 minutes I
forced the system to power off. I've since tried three times to boot
the system, each time after about 5 minutes of it just sitting at the
boot splash I hard booted and tried again. It finally booted on the
fourth try with no sign of the previous video issues.

I used the nouveau driver for this test, but trying again with the
proprietary nVidia driver wasn't any better. The system seemed to come
out of hibernate this time, and I do have power going to USB devices
that get plugged in, but the screen stays blank even when I try to
switch to another vterm. Taking it on faith that there's something
there to log in to doesn't seem to work on either the text or graphical
vterms. I left it that way for about 10 minutes then forced a restart
and got back to a normal session.

I'll repeat as much of this as I can with the latest upstream kernel and
see if there's any changes.

[Bug 416905] Re: Hewlett-Packard HP Pavilion dv2500 Notebook PC hibernate/resume failure

2010-03-15 Thread Joel Goguen
I've tested with the upstream build from the Kernel Team's page
(2.6.34-999.201003151003) and the system resumed perfectly and quickly
from hibernate with whatever it uses as the default driver for a nVidia
card. I wasn't able to get the nVidia proprietary driver to install
properly though.

if this is fixed or not. I'm downloading the Lucid ISO now and
will try hibernating frequently over the next few days. If this doesn't
happen in Lucid after a while (maybe a week?) should I still test the
latest upstream kernel or just remove the needs-upstream-testing tag?

Thanks,

[Bug 305898] Re: Kernel panic on HP Pavilion dv2622ca

2009-09-10 Thread Joel Goguen
Hi Kevin,

Disabling packet bursting is something that needs to be done on your
wireless router. Directions vary based on your router, but you are
typically looking for an advanced wireless option labelled Packet
Bursting. Changing this option will likely cause your router to
restart, or at least cause all wireless clients to lose their connection
temporarily.

To change your wireless driver, you must install the ndiswrapper-
utils-1.9, ndiswrapper-common and ndisgtk packages. Then, go to System
- Administration - Hardware Drivers and disable the Broadcom STA
driver. Once that's complete, reboot if asked. You will now need the
Windows XP drivers for your computer, which for 32-bit systems can be
downloaded from the HP driver download site for your laptop. Unpacking
them will require the cabextract package. After unpacking them, go to
System - Administration - Windows Wireless Drivers and search for the
.inf file you just unpacked. This will get the drivers installed. You
may have to edit /etc/modules (gksudo gedit /etc/modules) and add
ndiswrapper as a line in that file to get wireless to work after a
reboot.

If you have any problems or questions about this, please use Launchpad
Answers (https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu) or the Ubuntu Forums
(http://ubuntuforums.org/) rather than replying to this bug as bugs are
for tracking issues and workarounds while Launchpad Answers and the
Ubuntu Forums are for support questions.

Sincerely,
Joel

[Bug 416905] [NEW] Hewlett-Packard HP Pavilion dv2500 Notebook PC hibernate/resume failure

2009-08-21 Thread Joel Goguen
Public bug reported:

Resuming from hibernate gave me the Ubuntu boot screen, which said the
laptop was waking up. After a bit, that disappeared, the screen
remained blank, nothing was responsive, and no USB devices plugged in
appeared to be getting power. After ~5 minutes I forced the laptop to
power off, started it again, and aside from this problem report
everything seemed fine. When I hibernated, all I had running was
Firefox (2 windows, definitely over 5 tabs each), Dropbox, Ubuntu One,
and I believe I also had Terminal open with two tabs. I believe Ubuntu
One and Dropbox were both idle.

The BIOS identifies this as a Pavilion dv2500, but the actual model is
HP Pavilion dv2622ca. Not sure if that makes a difference here, but I
know the difference has caused problems for other people trying to use
the HP recovery discs to restore their Vista installs.

[Bug 378423] Re: Couldn't upgrade from kubuntu 8.04 to 9.04

2009-06-09 Thread Joel Goguen
Please accept apologies for the confusion. Unfortunately, there is no
upgrade path directly from Ubuntu 8.04 to Ubuntu 9.04. You would need
to upgrade Ubuntu 8.04 to Ubuntu 8.10, and then upgrade Ubuntu 8.10 to
Ubuntu 9.04.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue, and please do not

Hi,

Could you please be more specific? Saying it doesn't work doesn't
give the developers very much to look at. Please start by providing log
files and details about the exact network setup that isn't working.

Also, with regards to assigning the bug to yourself, will you be working
on it? If not, please remove yourself from the assignee field. If you
are, however, please set the status to In Progress instead. For more

[Bug 334052] Re: Network Manager Plasmoid won't connect to WPA Enterprise AP's in Jaunty

2009-06-03 Thread Joel Goguen
H.i.M,

Sorry, I totally missed your post with the network setup!

No problem getting hints either! The log file you're looking for is
either /var/log/daemon.log and/or /var/log/syslog. You can get just the
relevant logs by running one of these commands, depending on the file
you want to look at. You could even open two terminals and run both at
the same time to get both logs in one shot!

tail -F /var/log/daemon.log | tee -a ~/Desktop/daemon.log
tail -F /var/log/syslog | tee -a ~/Desktop/syslog

Those commands will display the logs in the terminal, and also make
files on your desktop with the same name as the log file you're looking
at. After running the command, try to connect. When you're done, just
push Ctrl+C in the terminal to stop collecting logs. The resulting
files can be uploaded here.

[Bug 161000] Re: system hangs on pressing AltTab while using Compiz-Fusion

2009-05-13 Thread Joel Goguen
Hi Thom,

This bug is being reopened because of your last comment regarding this
still being an issue with Jaunty. I am still unable to reproduce this
using Jaunty with binary nVidia drivers. Could you please reproduce
this issue and post new output from lspci, a new X server configuration
file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and a new X server log file
(/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file
attachments using the Attachment: box below? Could you please also
try to run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf (just rename it to something
other than /etc/X11/xorg.conf) and reboot to let Xorg autodetect your
display and video card? Please try again to reproduce this issue with
that setup, and attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt.

Thanks in advance!

2009-05-04 Thread Joel Goguen
Are you using Thunderbird 2 from the Ubuntu repositories? This issue is
not fixed in Thunderbird 2, nor is it likely to become fixed. This is
only solved in the Thunderbird 3 beta since beta 4pre.

If you would like to try using the Thunderbird 3 betas, please go to
https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozilla-daily/+archive/ppa and follow
the directions there for adding that PPA to your repository list. Then
install the thunderbird-3.0 package to get Thunderbird 3. Please keep
in mind that this is beta software, so you should make sure to have a
full backup of any relevant data (in this case, your ~/.mozilla-
thunderbird/ folder) before you start using this.

any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue
for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

[Bug 126063] Re: Snapping to wrong cube face in compiz fusion

2009-05-03 Thread Joel Goguen
Thanks for reporting this bug and taking the time to make Ubuntu better.
I can confirm that this is still an issue with the latest version of
Compiz in Ubuntu 9.04. I believe there is enough information for a
developer to begin work, I'm going to mark this as Triaged and let them
take it from here.

[Bug 368038] Re: solitaire comes up as free cell in games, just started

2009-04-29 Thread Joel Goguen
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

- Do you have a menu item in Games that just says Solitaire? If so,
could you please right-click on the Applications menu, choose Edit
Menus, and select Games from the list on the left of the window that
will appear. On the right side, please find the Solitaire entry,
double-click it, and paste here what is in the Command box.

- In the Games menu, there should be two menu entries for Solitaire.
One should be labeled AisleRiot Solitaire and the other should be
labeled FreeCell Solitaire. Do you have these, and do they both open
the game you expect? AisleRot Solitaire should open a window titled
Klondike, which is the standard Solitaire game most people refer to
when they refer to Solitaire.

Thanks in advance!

[Bug 367943] Re: Fetch user public key for server installation

2009-04-29 Thread Joel Goguen
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, what you are asking is not quite possible.

Users created must have a password, if only to allow console logins and
sudo usage. You may choose to disable password logins for subsequent
users, but even if you use private key authentication for the first user
created a password is still required for sudo authentication.

As for the idea to pull down a public key from Launchpad, this may be
possible, but you should submit the idea on Ubuntu Brainstorm at
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/ where it can be discussed, voted on by the
community and reviewed by developers.

Thanks again for taking the time to report this bug. Please continue to
report any further bugs you find.

[Bug 369603] [NEW] file-roller kills entire session when a process cannot be executed

2009-04-29 Thread Joel Goguen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

Whenever file-roller can't execute a process (such as mv, gzip, etc.) it
crashes the entire session. This seems to be because it sends SIGTERM
to PID 0 in src/fr-process.c. Line 984 might need a check for
process-priv-command_pid 0?

[jgog...@hermes:~/Code/file-roller-2.26.1]$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04
[jgog...@hermes:~/Code/file-roller-2.26.1]$ apt-cache policy file-roller
file-roller:
  Installed: 2.26.1-0ubuntu1

  Version table:

Expected behaviour: At worst, file-roller itself closes

Actual behaviour: The entire GNOME login session was closed and I had to
log back in.

[Bug 369603] Re: file-roller kills entire session when a process cannot be executed

2009-04-29 Thread Joel Goguen
This patch prevents file-roller from taking down the session when it
dies like this. Only problem is, if file-roller remains open it's
essentially useless anyway. If file-roller is kissed or closed in the
middle of an operation this won't be an issue, but if AppArmor is the
cause, file-roller will need to be restarted to get functionality. Not
sure if this is acceptable or not, and I don't know where to look to
further fix this, so here's my debdiff applying the patch provided in
the upstream bug.
