[Bug 1631175] Re: Xfce Power Manager turns screen back on after it turns off - on a netbook with Lubuntu

2016-10-06 Thread John B.
This change should've been made awhile ago. I was typing in the package
name wrong - That's why I couldn't put in the package. Thanks!

** Package changed: ubuntu => xfce4-power-manager (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1631175] [NEW] Xfce Power Manager turns screen back on after it turns off - on a netbook with Lubuntu

2016-10-06 Thread John B.
Public bug reported:

I have a netbook with Lubuntu 16.04.1(Yes, I know this is the Ubuntu
launchpad, but this mainly has something to do with Xfce power manager),
and it's called "MSI Wind U120".

I've noticed something with the Power Manager. By default, the screen is
set to turn off after 10 minutes of inactivity, on battery. But, when
the screen is turned off, it'll turn back on [almost] immediately after,
and then the Brightness level notification pops up.

I've also tried this command in the terminal: "xset dpms force
off,"(tells the screen to turn off) and got the same result as said
above.

Is anyone else having this problem also?

Version as needed: Xfce Power Manager 1.4.4.

This was created based on a question on this (One of mine, I was suggested to).

[Bug 1581535] Re: libnl upgrade breaks Network Manager

2016-05-13 Thread John B.
Just want to add a clarifying bit: Martin Pitt in #5 stated that he
removed the libnl3 update from trusty-proposed, but I got hit with this
on 14.04 and I do *not* have the -proposed repositories enabled. I can
confirm I am running network-manager 0.9.8.8-0ubuntu7.2.

In my case, it looks like the libnl upgrade was "available" before the
n-m upgrade, and it broke. Oddly enough n-m is listed (in synaptic) as
having another version available (7.3), but this wasn't caught by the
Software Updater app.

[Bug 1581617] [NEW] upgrade of libnl-genl-3-200 causes networkmanager to not load

2016-05-13 Thread John B.
Public bug reported:

This morning, before leaving for work, I saw there was a update
available for a package in Ubuntu 14.04 (I do NOT have the -proposed
repositories enabled). I installed it and shutdown. When I got to
work, no internet (network-manager won't load, there's a general
protection error in dmesg).

Looking at the apt log /var/cache/apt/history , it looks like libnl-
genl-3-200 was updated (and that was the *only* package that was
updated).

After loading up synaptic, there are other "upgradable" packages, none
of which got installed (or were listed) when I upgraded libnl-
genl-3-200:

gir1.2-netowrkmanager-1.0
libmm-glib0
libnm-glib-vpn1
libnm-glib4
libnm-util2
modemmanager
netowrk-manager

However, without the internet, I can't get these packages! Please help!

I *did* have an older version of libnl-genl-3-200 in
/var/apt/cache/archives (from Jan 29), but installing this and
restarting networkmanager (or the machine) does not fix the issue.

[Bug 1517989] [NEW] wpasupplicant breaks WPA Enterprise signon

2015-11-19 Thread John B.
Public bug reported:

After upgrading some packages last week, my laptop (Ubuntu 14.04) can no
longer sign on to any WPA Enterprise networks at the university I work
at. I was able to sign on prior to this update. I reverted
wpasupplicant from the current version
(wpasupplicant_2.1-0ubuntu1.4_amd64.deb) to another one that must have
been in the repositories (used synaptic to force an older version,
wpasupplicant_2.1-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb ) and the connection works now.

I had prior issues with updates to the openssl packages, and was forced
to keep older versions of those as well.

Assistance would be *greatly* appreciated!

[Bug 1469834] Re: openssl 1.0.1f-1ubuntu2.15 prevents connection to WPA Enterprise networks

2015-08-03 Thread John B.
Marc,

I tried the test package and was able to connect to the networks. I
installed the following packages from your PPA:

openssl_1.0.1f-1ubuntu2.16~test1_amd64.deb
libssl1.0.0_1.0.1f-1ubuntu2.16~test1_i386.deb

When attempting to use the current Live packages (to confirm if I was
still unable to connect) I still could not connect, and there were
several lines of the following in dmesg:

[Bug 1348384] Re: evince and okular do not render eps files correctly resulting in a black background

2015-05-18 Thread John B.
I know the bug status says Fix Released, but the problem is still
present on new installs of Ubuntu 14.04 (using a 14.04 image and
upgrading all packages, NOT installing from a 14.04.2 image).

Are there any plans to backport/fix this in the LTS release?

[Bug 1348384] Re: evince and okular do not render eps files correctly resulting in a black background

2014-08-07 Thread John B.
I just checked, and the prior version of libspectre
(libspectre1_0.2.7-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb), located at:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/trusty/amd64/libspectre1/0.2.7-2ubuntu1

renders the eps files correctly. Thus the bug was introduced in the

[Bug 1348384] Re: evince and okular do not render eps files correctly resulting in a black background

2014-08-06 Thread John B.
Chris,

Is there a previous version of libspectre1 from the trusty repository?
I've been running 14.04 on this machine, and feel like this is a recent
development.

I will mention that 13.10 did not have this issue either, so the
regression likely happened between the last version supplied to 13.10
and the current version in 14.04.

[Bug 1348384] [NEW] evince and okular do not render eps files correctly resulting in a black background

2014-07-24 Thread John B.
Public bug reported:

Several eps files, which previously rendered correctly, are not rendered
correctly by evince and okular. It looks as though something is wrong
with the transparency setting, since most of the incorrectly-rendered
files have a black background, but the figure can somewhat be made out
on top of hte black background. The PDF files I have tested are NOT
affected. EPS files that were previously viewable correctly ARE
affected.

Thank you for your time.

[Bug 1069259] [NEW] 12.04 freezing at login screen

2012-10-20 Thread John B
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with the Lubuntu desktop on a HP Pavilion
dm1 notebook. Lubuntu desktop normally used.

Booting has occurred normally but following login into the Lubuntu desktop a
message would appear stating that Ubuntu 21.04 had a system error. The system
worked fine hence this message was ignored. Then recently the occasional freeze
at booting commenced - with the mouse driven cursor functioning OK but the
login screen buttons frozen as was the password entry box. Re booting once
normally got the notebook up and running.
On the 19 Oct I made use of ubuntu-bug and avivotool - resulting in the
generation of a number of updates which were installed.
At a later booting the Update Manager highlighted 9 updates of 6.1MB (clam
updates plus), mouse became non functional, hand control of mouse was OK, then
it too became non functional. Rebooted into Lubuntu desktop and UM buttons non
functional, attempted UM closure - Message UM not responding.
Logged out of Lubuntu desktop and logged into Ubuntu desktop and installed
updates successfully.
Freezing at the login screen has become more of an issue with three freezes
followed by the presentation of the Grub screen. Booting was then normal.
In earlier boot freezes the Grub screen occurred sometimes following a reboot.
With the one exception mentioned above the freezing only occurs at booting.

[Bug 1019652] [NEW] wired connection fails on startup 12.04

2012-06-30 Thread John B
Public bug reported:

Hi. I have a brand new Asus X53E laptop running only Ubuntu 12.04 and
have a problem with establishing a wired internet connection at startup.
I usually have to reboot several times before a connection is
established. Once it is establshed, there is no problem and the
connection lasts. If I manually disconnect a working connection, the
same problem exists.

The wired connection on my desktop, running a previous version of Ubuntu
works fine. I tried installing WICD, uninstalled network manager, and
rebooted. Same problem. So I reinstalled gnome network manager and
uninstalled WICD. Again, same problem.

However, I did find that by bypassing the router, the wired network will
establish communication via gnome network manager on my laptop. The
problem is not entirely in the router, however, because my desktop,
running an older version of Ubuntu, can establish a wired connection via
the router.

I also found that although the laptop connection cannot be easily
established with the router in place, a wireless connection can be
easily established. So for some reason, the problem is only with the
wired connection when using the router.

Lastly, just to make sure the problem is not in the LAN cable, I
unplugged the working cable from my desktop and tried it with my laptop,
and same problem. So it is not the cable.

The system log errors for one cycle of disconnect and connect are:

[Bug 849700] Re: Indicators do not raise application in other workspace

2012-06-30 Thread John B
I use Ubuntu 12.04 and have the same problem. If I click on a link in
thunderbird, and firefox is open on a different desktop, it opens a new
tab in firefox but does not switch the focus to the desktop firefox is
in. Focus stays on thunderbird.

Related to this, is there any way to cause a new instance of firefox to
open in the current desktop when a link in thunderbird is clicked, as
opposed to a new tab opening in the firefox on a different desktop?

I can confirm the same behavior in ubuntu 12.04. This is a showstopper
bug for those of us needing to access windows shares in our work
environment. Mount commands that work in 10.04 do not work in 12.04.
Please address.

[Bug 840474] [NEW] Can't connect via samba from Vbox XP Guest when restricting IP with hosts allow in smb.conf

2011-09-03 Thread John B.
Public bug reported:

lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS
Release:10.04

apt-cache policy samba
samba:
  Installed: 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.7
  Candidate: 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.7
  Version table:

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages

I'm assuming this is a bug, as it worked before.

I have a WinXP VirtualBox guest that I like to share folders with via
samba (please don't suggest using the VBox shares option as a
workaround). In the past, I was able to restrict access to just the XP
Guest via

hosts allow = 192.168.56.0/255.255.255.0

in the smb.conf file, as the vboxnet0 interface is on that IP range
(it's 192.168.1.101). bind interfaces only = true is commented out,
as are all interfaces lines. At some point (I'm not sure when, as I
don't use the XP Guest that frequently) this stopped working. If I
comment out the hosts allow line such that access is available for
everyone, then the XP Guest can connect.

I have the same problem if I comment out hosts allow and have

bind interfaces only = true
interfaces = lo vboxnet0

The first setup listed has worked previously, so I'm filing it as a bug.
Again, by simply changing the smb.conf by commenting out the hosts
allow line and restarting samba, I have access to the shares (so the
shares are being put up properly), and I'm asked for my samba username
and password when accessing from the guest, so I think that end of it is
behaving properly. There seems to be something wrong with how it's set
up to filter on IP or interface.

deleted most of the share config at the bottom for privacy issues, but
left one in there with the username redacted.

[Bug 840474] [NEW] Can't connect via samba from Vbox XP Guest when restricting IP with hosts allow in smb.conf

2011-09-03 Thread John B.
Public bug reported:

lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS
Release:10.04

apt-cache policy samba
samba:
  Installed: 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.7
  Candidate: 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.7
  Version table:
 *** 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.7 0

I have the same problem if I comment out hosts allow and have

bind interfaces only = true
interfaces = lo vboxnet0

[Bug 783126] [NEW] Kile missing icons and widgets look bad in Unity

2011-05-15 Thread John B.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

I upgraded from Maverick, and the settings (which I can't figure out how
to reverse) in unity make the qt apps look terrible. Specifically, Kile
can't find icons for half of the entries in its menus, and some of the
widgets just look terrible (see attached image). I'm filing it as a bug
as it shouldn't be the intended behavior, but I'll be satisfied if I can
just figure out how to tell the interface to *not* try to override the
display settings for qt apps, so that they look normal again.

[Bug 721997] Re: cannot upgrade from lucid to maverick, unmet dependencies

2011-02-19 Thread John B.
When attempting to upgrade from lucid to maverick in the Update Manager,
I get to the point where it is trying to compute the space requirements,
and then it errors out, complaining about some unmet dependencies. It
does this on all 3 of my lucid installs that I have tried. I was able to
upgrade a 4th install a few months ago (I have 2 installs on both my
desktop and laptop, one production, and one testing for new
releases). Can anyone confirm this?

Dang, just realized I typed all of that in the description. Sorry.

[Bug 349767] Re: external USB hard drive disconnects

2010-12-27 Thread John B
Just adding my observations...

On 10.04 (2.6.32-27 x86_64) with a JFS filesystem, an external
Mediasonic 4-Bay enclose (JBOD) will crap out every few days with:

[421343.711477] usb 1-4.1: device descriptor read/8, error -110
[421348.840954] usb 1-4.1: device descriptor read/8, error -110

[421348.951132] sd 10:0:0:0: rejecting I/O to offline device

etc..

I've noticed that changing the max_sectors on the drive to 1024 makes it
fail much more quickly. Unfortunately, it still fails with others I've
tried (128, 256, 512), though with 128 it usually runs for a few days.

[Bug 600453] Re: [arrandale] [i915] DELL E6510: blank screen on boot (Intel GPU)

2010-11-25 Thread John-B-G
The Display work fine (after some work) with 9.10 on 2.6.31-22-server

With 10.10 (and 10.4 as well as with a recent fedora and a debian) it is
blank: however attaching a vesa screen and detaching it (possible more
than once) the screen comes up and everything is ok (as remarked above
by another user). I can also get to a command screen (no X) with the
option nomodset at boot (as suggested above), but X cannot be started.

I recompiled the kernel using 2.6.31-generic; but it did not even boot

The problem is (as already pointed out) that the intel module is not
correct (why is it in 9.10?)

[Bug 589043] [NEW] Evince does not use proper print margins

2010-06-03 Thread John B.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

There were some similar bugs, but none that specifically dealt with this
issue, on a fully updated Lucid as of 2010-06-02 (June 2, 2010).

When printing PDFs from evince, the top and bottom print margins are
incorrect. The top one is shortened, and the bottom one is lengthened.
As a result, the page is shifted upwards, sometimes cutting off the
top page number. Acrobat Reader prints the pages correcting from the
same pdf. This occurs on all PDFs I have tried.

Thanks for your assistance.

[Bug 560500] [NEW] nm-applet needs to be restarted after checking unchecking sharing box in vino

2010-04-11 Thread John B.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vino

Not sure if this should be filed against vino (Remote Desktop) or nm-
applet. When running System-Preferences-Remote Desktop, checking and
then unchecking Allow others to view your desktop causes nm-applet to
shut off (or crash, or stall, or something) so that wireless no longer
functions. Restarting nm-applet from a terminal brings the internet
back up. I would expect that checking unchecking the allow others to
view your desktop box would not hinder *my* connection to others, just
*their* connection to me. If the bug that I am experiencing is indeed
the default behavior, some notification of what needs to be done to
restore connectivity should be given.

[Bug 482889] [NEW] fonts do not render nicely in okular for dvi and pdf documents - need antialiasing or subpixel hinting?

2009-11-14 Thread John B.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdegraphics

Fonts rendered in okular in dvi and pdf documents either need anti-
aliasing or subpixel hinting turned on to look nice again. PDF
rendering in evince looks fantastic, though dvi rendering in evince
looks blurry.

I didn't use Jaunty, so I don't know how recent the regression is. Both
kdvi and evince render the documents correctly in Hardy, though.

2009-10-24 Thread John B.
I'd like to confirm this bug in Karmic. Blurry dvi rendering in evince,
but PDF rendering is fine. dvi rendering in okular has a different
problem in okular, as the anti-aliasing isn't on for some reason. xdvi
seems to render the fonts sharply/correctly.

[Bug 12016] Re: RFE: Replace Bitstream Vera with DejaVu

2009-10-18 Thread John B.
I just wanted to request that the original bitstream vera fonts be made
available, or that (if this is possible), a symlink is made that points
bitstream to the deja vu fonts. Some programs may specifically look for
bitstream fonts and not render correctly if they are not found. I ran
into this on Mathematica 6.0.3. It took me forever to figure out which
font it was trying to find on the system. Once I told it to do a font
substitution on Bitstream Vera Sans, the problems went away. I think it
would be a good idea to be able to still have the bitstream fonts
installed.

2009-10-17 Thread John B.
Just wanted to add that with the recent pull of the pre3 release into

backported, but Fix Released on Karmic), that would be great.

[Bug 449888] [NEW] [karmic] network manager gnome does not remember wpa enterprise hidden network passwords over reboot, need to re-create network profile each time.

2009-10-12 Thread John B.
Public bug reported:

Network manager (not sure if it's the core package or just the gnome
applet) does not remember my password for connecting to a WPA enterprise
network. All other settings are remembered and recalled, but not the
password. Complicating this is that the password box is greyed out
(as is the connect button), so I can't just enter the password and click
connect, I have to re-enter the info for the wireless network all over
again.

I don't know if it's relevant, but here is the network settings I'm
using

Wireless security: WPA WPA2 Personal
Authentication: Protected EAP
Anonymous Identity : **my campus email**
CA Cert: /etc/ssl/certs/Thawte_Premium_Server_CA
PEAP Version : Automatic
Inner Authentication : MSCHAPv2
Username : **campus username**
Password : **campus password**

Every setting except for the password is recalled correctly. The SSID
of the network is hidden. Connecting to a new hidden network with
these settings works perfectly.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can provide to help
troubleshoot this bug.

[Bug 445900] [NEW] Exiting out of chainloaded grub2 causes Karmic to not boot until a further reboot.

2009-10-07 Thread John B.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub2

This is likely not a high-priority bug given the unusual setup, but I'll
report it anyway.

I decided to test out grub2 on my karmic install by chainloading into it
from grub legacy. This normally works fine. What doesn't is when I
exit out of grub2 to the top-level grub on my system.

I have a hardy-maintained grub legacy on the MBR, which chainloads to
the grub legacy on the karmic partition, which chainloads to grub2.
When exiting out of grub 2, it sends me back to the MBR/Hardy grub
legacy, and chainloading to the karmic grub legacy then hangs until a
reboot, at which point everything works fine again.

To be clear, the crash occurs on the following

MBR/Hardy Legacy - Karmic Partition Legacy - Karmic Grub 2 -
MBR/Hardy Legacy - Loading Karmic Partition Legacy hangs/crashes.

Let me know if more info is needed.

[Bug 444181] Re: Network-Manager becomes unresponsive in Gnome, Won't configure Wireless

2009-10-05 Thread John B.
Also hit by this bug, though I didn't confirm the CLI stuff the OP
reported.

Driver is iwl9345, loads fine upon boot. Clicking on the applet seems
to be ok, though after the upgrade it no longer auto-connects to the
home (wpa personal) network that I connect to. I click on the applet
and can see the various available networks, and clicking on y usual one
seems to crash the applet (it becomes unresponsive, other parts of hte
system and panel are fine). Network connection is never established.

/e/n/i just contains the lines :

Noel provided a newer applet from the ppa, network-manager-
gnome_0.8~a~git.20091002t194214.8515a07-0ubuntu1~nmt1_i386.deb .
Installing the newer applet fixed the above issue for me.

[Bug 341697] Re: xchat-gnome crashed with SIGSEGV in IA__g_main_context_prepare()

2009-09-26 Thread John B.
I just encountered this bug on Karmic, same symptoms as the OP (trying
to add channels, grey window, unresponsive, then crash).

I was running a lot of internet stuff at the time, so maybe xchat was
timing out and crashing?

[Bug 436886] [NEW] Some proprietary binaries depend on libstdc++5, should be included in karmic.

2009-09-25 Thread John B.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcc-3.3

The package doesn't exist in Karmic, so I can't provide the usual
information.

This is a wishlist item.

Can libstdc++5 be made available in the repositories (at least in
universe) so that proprietary software which depends on them (such as
Mathematica 6) can still work when upgraded to Karmic? I understand if
Canonical doesn't want to use the resources to support both libstdc++6
and libstdc++5 at the same time, but at least with the package in
universe programs would continue to function.

[Bug 434793] [NEW] [karmic] Network Manager will not load password for previously used Hidden WPA Enterprise Network, can't connect [regression]

2009-09-22 Thread John B.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I apologize for the lack of requested info, but as it's a bug with
connecting to the network I can't get the info and file the bug at the
same time.

The distro is a fully-updated (as of Tues Sept 22 ~9AM) Karmic Alpha 6
install. The computer is an intel core 2 duo laptop with an intel
3945abg wireless card.

When loading up a previously-used WPA-Enterprise network with a hidden
SSID, nm will load all the previously entered settings aside from the
password. All fields are greyed out, and with the password field empty,
the connect button is greyed out, which does not allow me to connect
to the network.

Removing the saved network settings (through Edit Wireless Networks)
and re-entering the settings via Connect to Hidden Wireless Network
causes nm-applet to crash (and I can't send the apport info, as I'm not
connected to the network). To be clear, I can enter all of the info
when setting up the new network (id, password, ca certs file, etc.), but
nm crashes upon trying to connect. Connecting to a visible WPA-Personal
network at home is fine, and nm loads the settings and such
automatically without crashing.

This worked in earlier alphas of karmic (I believe alpha 5).

Please let me know what I can do to help out and test, as I would love
to upgrade to karmic when it comes out, but this would be a deal-breaker
as I need connectivity at work.

[Bug 430981] Re: keybindings not remembered on reboot

2009-09-21 Thread John B.
Same here, following the steps (turn off compiz, set keybindings,
reboot, re-enable compiz) has fixed the issue, my keybindings stay set
after subsequent reboots, keeping compiz on. I just upgraded my desktop
to alpha 6.x yesterday, so I'll check if it is affected as well. The
machine I encountered the issue on had been upgraded to alpha 5, so it
might be a setting that was messed up from an earlier package.

[Bug 424914] [NEW] gedit menu entry no longer follows gnome HIG

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

In Karmic Alpha 5 (LiveCD), gedit does not follow the HIG for it's entry
in the Applications menu. It simply says gedit, but gives to
description of what type of application it is. It should be changed to
something like Text Editor or gedit Text Editor.
