[Bug 205667] Re: Inkscape crashes when using 3d box after attempting to render latex, gears, tree, barcode, maybe others.

2008-08-03 Thread John Buncher
I am able to reproduce this bug on an Intrepid Alpha3 LiveCD with all
updates applied, the inkscape package version is 0.46-0ubuntu4.

To reproduce the bug, I rendered a Gears, and then tried the
perspective tool.

[Bug 197163] Re: Mathematica renders fonts incorrectly in Hardy

2008-07-12 Thread John Buncher
I don't mean to be too off-topic, but as mentioned previously you need
/etc/printcap for Mathematica to find your printers. You can generate
this in hardy by adding

Printcap /etc/printcap

to your /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file, and then restarting cupsys via

sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

This might be useful for those that wish to restore printing without
removing the Mathematica-provided qt libraries.

[Bug 55273] Re: inkscape generates no latex formula

2008-06-13 Thread John Buncher
I was following this bug over at Bug #195052 for a while
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/195052 ), and that bug was
slated to be included/fixed for the 8.04.1 milestone. When it was
marked as a dupe of this bug, I think that got erased (it no longer
shows up on https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+milestone/ubuntu-8.04.1 ).
Will this be in the Hardy repos soon? Ever? I see that the fix is
committed to inkscape (Ubuntu), but I'm not sure if that means Hardy
or the dev version of Intrepid. Any clarification would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

[Bug 232443] Re: Let the user choose between ntfs-3g and ntfs kernel driver

2008-06-07 Thread John Buncher
I would like to suggest not closing this bug, as I recently ran in to a
damaged ntfs partition that I was unable to mount using ntfs-3g, but a
friend *was* able to mount using the kernel driver. At the very least,
when ntfs-3g is installed it should make a mount.ntfskernel or something
so that people troubleshooting have the option of using the kernel ntfs
driver.

Even if the reason why my friend was able to mount the drive was not due
to differences in ntfs-3g vs kernel ntfs, we should still leave the
option on the table. I have nothing against ntfs-3g as the default in
ubuntu, but it seems like the kernel ntfs driver should still be
accessible for troubleshooting/recovery cases where ntfs-3g might not
work.

Thanks for your time.

[Bug 226637] [NEW] xine menu entry does not follow HIG in Hardy (regression from Gutsy)

2008-05-04 Thread John Buncher

After the installation of the xine-ui package, there is a menu entry
titled xine in Applications - Sound Video. This should be
something like Xine Movie Player to be compatible with Gnome HIG
(http://library.gnome.org/devel/hig-book/stable/desktop-application-

In Gutsy, the menu entry is Xine Movie Player, so this is a

[Bug 190848] Re: font in terminal does not resemble font in preview

2008-04-02 Thread John Buncher
I'm not sure why Michael Kuhn's workaround did not work for me before,
as it does now on my hardy beta clean install (as opposed to my earlier
hardy alpha clean install). I also have no ~/.fonts.conf , go figure.

also, I think

$ cd /etc/fonts/conf.d
$ sudo ln -s ../conf.avail/10-subpixel-rgb.conf

should be done as well, so that the subpixel ordering is nice. This
makes a noticeable difference on my machine, others may need vrgb or bgr
or some such thing

That, or the settings in the fonts application should override what is
in this directory.

[Bug 190848] Re: font in terminal does not resemble font in preview

2008-04-02 Thread John Buncher
I don't know why I didn't notice this before, but it seems as though my
gutsy boxes dont' have the 10-* symlinks in /etc/fonts/conf.d/ .
Removing these symlinks seems to make gnome-terminal respect the
settings in the appearance - font application, which I would assume is
the desired behavior? Does anyone know why fontconfig now installs
these symlinks?

Qt apps don't respect the settings in that fonts dialog after removing
the /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-* symlinks, but they do look nicer than *with*
the links, and they didn't respect the settings in that dialog in gutsy
either.

[Bug 205667] Re: Inkscape crashes when using 3d box after attempting to render latex, gears, tree, barcode, maybe others.

2008-03-25 Thread John Buncher
Bryce,

Yikes, thanks for pointing that out!

Unfortunately, I just tried going back to run that command, and every
time inkscape crashes, it seems to hang other things as well, so that I
can not click in the terminal running the gdb to run the (gdb)
backtrace full command. I tried killing the /usr/bin/inkscape program,
but nothing happened (maybe because it's under control of gdb??) I have
to end up killing the gdb program to regain control, and then cannot run
the backtrace.

I've tried attaching from a tty to inkscape already running, but when
I went back to the desktop inkscape was all greyed out and not happy,
and I could not continue with the actions that would cause the crash.

What is the latest package of inkscape in hardy? I have 0.46-0ubuntu1,
and I haven't noticed any updates to inkscape in the past day or to, so
I'll wait a bit longer to see if inkscape updates to re-confirm the bug.

Do you have any other suggestions on how to help give you guys some more
info? Are you able to reproduce the crash? Just render a barcode or
latex or gears or a random tree and then try the 3d box command, that
works every time for me.

Thanks for your time and help!

[Bug 205667] [NEW] Inkscape crashes when using 3d box after attempting to render latex, gears, tree, barcode, maybe others.

2008-03-23 Thread John Buncher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: inkscape

I couldn't get apport to pick up this crash, otherwise this would be
more complete.

Inkscape does not render a LaTeX formula at all. Running Render-LaTeX
Forumula seems to go fine, (pstoedit seems to complete without error),
yet no equation is displayed on the page. If I subsequently try to use
the perspective/3d tool (new in 0.46), inkscape crashes very hard, and I
have to kill it from the terminal. The crash also occurs after
rendering a random tree, gears, or barcode (which all render fine,
unlike latex). Rendering a Grid did not cause the 3d box crash.

The 3d/perspective tool works fine if I do not try to use those render
tools. All other drawing tools (circles, squares, etc.) seem to run
fine whether or not I try to render those objects (tree, gears, barcode,
latex). The latex portion of this bug seems related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/195052, but I have not seen the
second portion (the crash when using the 3d box tool).

I have attached a backtrace obtained by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash and
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace.

If there is anything else I can do to help with this bug, please let me
know.

I should add in my previous comment that in ~/.fonts.conf , the
antialiasing is set to true, but I'm wondering if there are multiple
ones to choose from, much like hinting is set to true, and then there
is a hintstyle. Looking through the man page for fonts.conf was not
helpful to me, though I may have missed something.

[Bug 190848] Re: font in terminal does not resemble font in preview

2008-03-16 Thread John Buncher
@Michael Kuhn:

The provided workaround did not work for me, it had no effect.

I was able to somewhat correct the problem by editing ~/.fonts.conf ,
which was a file that didn't exist in gutsy (I checked one of my
installs). I made sure to have the line consthintfull/const rather
than consthintmedium/const at the appropriate place in that file.

This makes the font look better, but I think some antialiasing or
something still needs to take place, as the font in the terminal does
not look as good as in other apps, like gedit.

So, it looks like most gnome apps are using the global settings which
are set by the appearance applet, but these are not written to the
home directory, so other programs like terminal (no idea why this is
affected, it's a gnome app) and qt apps look to ~/.fonts.conf for their
behavior.

I tried removing ~/.fonts.conf, but that also had no effect, and the
font was still ugly.

[Bug 190848] Re: font in terminal does not resemble font in preview

2008-03-16 Thread John Buncher
Fixed!

Sorry for flooding the list, but I think I've got a workaround for the
issue. In ~/.fonts.conf , not only should consthintfull/const
replace consthintmedium/const in the hintstyle area, but
constrgb/const should replace constnone/const in the rgba
section. I've attached my .fonts.conf file as an example.

Note that this doesn't solve the underlying issue, that some program
isn't modifying this file like it should, but at least this points to
what needs to be done. Can others on this list try the workaround to
see if it works for them?

In short, I think the package manager, package, or restricted driver
manager (whichever is responsible) does not run nvidia-xconfig after
installing the nvidia driver.

I just got done installing Hardy from an Alpha 5 disk, and updated
everything through the update manager twice to make sure I hadn't lost
anything. Then I let the restricted driver manager install the nvidia
drivers for my card (it grabbed nvidia-glx-new correctly). Upon reboot,
I was stuck in low graphics mode. It attempted to have me use the
Screen and Graphics gtk program to fix it, but the nvidia driver was
not selectable from there. I installed nvidia-settings, and it told me
to run nvidia-xconfig. xorg.conf had nvidia in the driver line, but I
think it was missing the various modules such as glx that are also
loaded. Running nvidia-xconfig, logging out, restarting X from a tty
(/etc/init.d/gdm stop / start) corrected the problem.

Did I do something wrong, or should nvidia-xconfig be run by the
package manager after installing the nvidia drivers?

[Bug 198176] [NEW] gdm[5056]: WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0

2008-03-03 Thread John Buncher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This bug has been occurring on my gutsy install for my laptop for a
while now (never happened on feisty). I'll be working on things and
then I will get logged out and back at the gdm prompt. I finally had
the presence of mind to look at the log files immediately after the
crash. I do *not* think it is screensaver related, nor is it nvidia
related (using intel driver).

I tried to reproduce the issue on my laptop with a gutsy live cd, and

[Bug 184362] linux-image-2.6.22-14-server fails to install on feisty - gutsy upgrade, depmod fails to run

2008-01-19 Thread John Buncher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-14-server

I initially encountered this bug when upgrading my laptop from feisty-
gutsy (i386). The package couldn't install, so the upgrade process
broke. I was able to reboot, and I think I finished the upgrade process
by manually removing some feisty-only packages (desktop-effects and
such). Attempt to install linux-image-2.6.22-14-server fail still.

Another question I have is why that package was pulled in in the first
place? I run a desktop environment, and always boot the -generic
kernels, and had no -server kernels installed in feisty, so I don't know
why the upgrade-manager tried to pull in this package. I eventually
uninstalled the package, but it still crashed the upgrade, so this
should be fixed.

[Bug 180963] Wireless Mouse causes intermittent audio issues in Gutsy

2008-01-07 Thread John Buncher
Public bug reported:

I recently obtained a Logitech LX-7 Wireless USB mouse (recognized in
dmesg as a MX 1000) for my desktop (abit av8 via chipset) running gutsy,
and it seems to cause intermittent audio issues. The specific issue
depends on the program being used.

Listen: short skips while listening to mp3's, occurs every few minutes or so
Mplayer: audio drops out on movies for about a half a second or so, occurs
(apparently) randomly, with a frequency of every few minutes.
Totem: seemed to only get the skips while watching movies
XMMS: Didn't seem affected, though my ears might not have been able to tell.

I reattached my PS/2 mouse and unplugged the USB mouse during a cold
reboot, the issues seemed to disappear in MPlayer (only one I checked).
Upon plugging in the USB receiver again, the issues returned. The only
new module that appeared to load was lmpcm_usb. rmmod-ing that module
did not fix the audio issues, though the wireless mouse was still
functional. Removing the wireless receiver fixed the audio issues.
Changing the USB port the receiver is connected to does not fix the
issue (various ones on the back and front of the case). The issue is
present on the Gutsy live cd as well.

The issue also occurs whether or not the USB Wireless mouse is connected
at boot time.

On my feisty laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo), using an earlier version of this
mouse (still an LX-7) does not seem to cause any issues.

I would greatly appreciate some help in resolving this issue, and am
more than willing to provide any files needed.

EDIT: I should mention that the drops are present in mplayer with -afm
mad, -afm ffmpeg, and -afm mp3. Using -ao oss (rather than alsa) seems
to work around the issue, but it may just take longer for the drops to
present themselves.

[Bug 146455] Re: video playback doesn't work on Gutsy Beta and nvidia drivers

2007-11-21 Thread John Buncher
I'm also suffering from this bug, in myth/totem/xine on a gutsy upgrade
using the nvidia drivers on a 6800 GT.

I can get mplayer to work by setting -vo gl, and xine works a bit
better when using that, but myth is still a gamble (works for a while,
then doesn't).

Any progress? What are the chances of a fixed driver being put into
gutsy?

[Bug 41134] Re: Does not store WPA-Enterprise password in keyring

2007-08-22 Thread John Buncher
I can confirm this bug in Feisty (WPA Enterprise, PEAP, TKIP, using
username, password, and certificate). I have to re-enter my info every
time, but I also have to unlock the keyring every time. It might be
writing to both gconf and the keyring (I admit I don't really know how
the keyring works).

The SSID on my WPA Enterprise network that I connect to on campus has
the SSID hidden (do all WPA Enterprise ones hide the SSID?), so it seems
that network-manager doesn't know that the network is there, and
doesn't try to automatically connect, like it does with all of the other
WPA (Personal / PSK) networks I have used. I'm not sure if this
behavior is related to this particular bug.

[Bug 118188] Re: cdrom won't mount in 2.6.20-16-generic kernel

2007-06-02 Thread John Buncher
I'm not exactly sure what you're asking for with make and model of
device. The laptop is a Gateway MT6821 (intel chipsets), and I don't
know much more about the make and model of the optical drive other than
what dmesg tells me: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7530A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive.

In the bios, the drive is listed as a PATA (ide) drive. The hard drive
is a SATA.

The dmesg and lspci logs are all from the 2.6.16-20-generic kernel. If
you'd like me to boot to -15-generic and give new ones, just let me
know.

Thanks for the help, if there's anything else I can provide, let me
know!

[Bug 118188] cdrom won't mount in 2.6.20-16-generic kernel

2007-05-31 Thread John Buncher
Public bug reported:

With the new packaged kernel update in Feisty (2.6.20-16-generic), my
cdrom on a gateway laptop won't automount anymore. I did a fresh feisty
install on this machine.

When the -16-generic kernel boots, the cdrom device file is created at
/dev/hda, but /dev/scd0 is the mount point in the fstab (yes, /dev/scd0,
c before d).

When the -15-generic kernel boots, the cdrom device file is created at
/dev/scd0, and everything works great.

I am not sure if this is a kernel bug or a module that got updated, as
I'm not knowledgeable about that stuff.

In Places- Computer there are two cdrom drives that show up, and there
is only one cd drive on the computer. This does not happen when I boot

Re: [Bug 111257] Re: totem crashes with 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)' when using compiz and xserver-xorg-video-intel driver

2007-05-29 Thread John Buncher
@Albert

I'm not sure if that is the same bug, if you say you're experiencing
it with 915resolution. The bug that has been reported here (at least
in my case) does NOT involve 915resolution (in fact, that's when stuff
works), but rather with the xserver-xorg-video-intel package/driver,
not the xserver-xorg-video-i810 + 915resolution package/driver/patch
combo.

On 5/29/07, Albert Abril [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 Here's the same problem, with a Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated
 Graphics Controller and a Flatron TFT L192WS ( 19'' Widescreen ).
 I'm running the fix 915resolution.

 Video only fails when Compiz or Beryl are running, for all the video-
 players and video-editors.

 Doesn't working the fix of jhasse here.

 mplayer output:

 VDec: using Planar YV12 as output csp (no 0)
 Movie-Aspect is undefined - no prescaling applied.
 VO: [xv] 320x240 = 320x240 Planar YV12
 X11 error: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)?,?% 0 0

 MPlayer interrupted by signal 6 in module: vo_check_events
 - MPlayer crashed. This shouldn't happen.
   It can be a bug in the MPlayer code _or_ in your drivers _or_ in your
   gcc version. If you think it's MPlayer's fault, please read
   DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html and follow the instructions there. We can't
 and
   won't help unless you provide this information when reporting a possible
 bug.

 Regards.

[Bug 117102] from visual.graph import * - crashes when gcurve is called - RuntimeError: boost::bad_weak_ptr

2007-05-26 Thread John Buncher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-visual

This might also be an issue with libboost-python1.33.1, I'm not sure.

When calling gcurve in a program, the program crashes with the following
error message:

IDLE 1.2.1   No Subprocess

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File /home/**usernameedited**/Phys172L/fancart.py, line 11, in module
mgraph = gcurve(color=color.cyan)
  File /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/visual/graph.py, line 489, in __init__
pos = constructorargs(self,args)
  File /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/visual/graph.py, line 463, in
constructorargs
obj.gdisplay = getgdisplay()
  File /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/visual/graph.py, line 456, in
getgdisplay
return gdisplay()
  File /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/visual/graph.py, line 192, in __init__
currentdisplay.select()
RuntimeError: boost::bad_weak_ptr

Simply running the program reproduces the error. Removing all
references to gcurve in the program prevents the error. I encountered
this on a fresh feisty install on a Gateway Core 2 Duo laptop. I
installed the ubuntu-packaged versions of python2.5, libboost and
python-visual.

The source code for the program which causes the error is:

from visual import *
scene.y = 400 # move animation window down 400 pixels from top of screen
from visual.graph import *

track = box(pos=vector(0,-.05,0), size=(1.0, 0.05, 0.10))
cart = box(pos=vector(-0.5,0,0), size=(0.1, 0.04, 0.06), color=color.green)

cart.m = 0.80
cart.p = cart.m*vector(0.5, 0, 0)

mgraph = gcurve(color=color.cyan)

deltat = 0.01
t = 0

while t  3.0:
rate(100)
Fnet = vector(-0.4, 0, 0)
cart.p = cart.p + Fnet*deltat
cart.pos = cart.pos + (cart.p/cart.m)*deltat
mgraph.plot( pos=(t, cart.p.x))
t = t + deltat

[Bug 111257] Re: totem crashes with 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)' when using compiz and xserver-xorg-video-intel driver

2007-05-12 Thread John Buncher
I'm having the same issues as well on a 1280x800 screen. For me,
switching the video out (vo) to x11 rather than xv lets the videos
play, though I would much rather like to use xv.
