[Bug 378416] Re: Thinkfinger cleanup
Tom, thinkfinger is dead upstream. At this point, if you want to continue the thinkfinger project you should consider adopting it upstream. Hiding your patches in a bug tracker and in a debian dir is the equivalent of three week's notice behind the sign that says Beware of Tiger, and is not going to achieve the level of quality a security system requires. While I agree that the Ubuntu developer who prepared this package against svn make substantial errors that should be corrected if thinkfinger continues, I don't think it's a forgone conclusion that it should. You mention fprint is doesn't accept passwords, but it should be relatively simple to change libpam-fprint to accept a password and pass the results down the pam stack. It might be worth considering dropping thinkfinger for ubuntu+2 entirely, if we can get eyeballs looking for regressions. -- Thinkfinger cleanup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/378416 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 276384] Re: Thinkfinger doesn't unlock keyring
gnome-keyring stores your passwords on disk, encrypted with a single passphrase. You make the phrase on creation and re-enter it again later to open the ring. The additional challenge is that nobody should be able to recover the data without also knowing the passphrase. So the datastore itself has to be imbued with mathematical properties related to the passphrase, and the passphrase change (unless you also have the old passphrase). Fingerprint identification works by doing a fuzzy match of a given scan to a registered print. These fuzzy match algorithms are even subject to export controls (normally). Any given scan will be different, as your fingerprint changes over time. Scars, wounds, warts, orientation etc can affect the scan. So the given scan can't be an encryption key, because every scan is different and has far too few stable properties. The registered print likely can't be a key because it's stored on disk and we don't know the format etc. The format itself is encrypted to prevent an attacker from crafting their own fingerprint based on the registered print, so not a lot is known about it. About the only way this could work is if the fingerprint device itself had a secured datastore, working on the theory that it's much harder to attack the chip itself than a regular storage device. Place the passphrase and a registered fingerprint in the datastore and only release the passphrase when a matching print is offered. -- Thinkfinger doesn't unlock keyring https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/276384 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

From man wminput: Place the following line in a file in /etc/udev/rules.d (see the documentation for your distro for the recommended file for local rules) to allow anyone on the system to use uinput: KERNEL==uinput, MODE=0666 A more secure method uses the following line to allow anyone in group to use wminput, and adds only the desired users to group: KERNEL==uinput, GROUP=group A uinput group can be created specifically for this purpose, or another existing group such as wheel can be used. Click on the clamp tool (weird thing with a red V, next to the pencil) and place a clamp before and after the resistor. 7. Click Simulate. [Bug 276384] Re: Thinkfinger doesn't unlock keyring
The right way to fix this securely is to make the password and fingerprints required, both of them. Then you can unlock the keyring, log into WPA protected wifi, connect samba shares and so on. Anything else is security theater. The odds are pretty good, especially on a tabletPC or laptop, that there's a recoverable fingerprint on the LCD screen. This is the fingerprint equivalent of the password on a stickynote attached to the monitor, except you do it without even trying. -- Thinkfinger doesn't unlock keyring https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/276384 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 278703] Re: tf-tool can't 'acquire' on new thinkpads
Thinkfinger is an inappropriately named project, unfortunately. It's goal is to support the fingerprint reader device in older model thinkpads. Unfortunately the hardware seems to have changed. Doubly unfortunate is that the upstream project is done. If your hardware isn't supported by thinkfinger today, it likely never will be. The good news is this: thinkfinger has closed up to give way to a broader project called fprint that can help you. I would suggest you try fprint, but recent discussion on the mailing list makes it clear: aes2810 is not currently supported in Linux, and the reverse engineering effort will be slow. If you're interested in helping, for the moment I suggest introducing yourself upstream and offering to help. http://reactivated.net/fprint/wiki/Main_Page -- tf-tool can't 'acquire' on new thinkpads https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/278703 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 278703] Re: tf-tool can't 'acquire' on new thinkpads
Well, it's different hardware underneat that needs new drivers. I imagine the motivation to change was price driven. [Bug 276384] Re: Thingfinger dosen't unlock keyring
For reasons unknown to me, Network manager stores your wireless passwords in an encrypted keyring. Your password is the decrypt token. I assume you've enabled pam_keyring in common_auth, which recieves the password you type at GDM and starts the keyring manager with enough timeout to let nm-applet retrieve passwords from your keyring. I'm marking this confirmed, to keep it a visible and known bug. The fixes I can imagine are to either: * place NM wireless keys out of the keyring by default (weak wireless security) * store the keyring token within the fingerprint reader itself (good luck) * store the keyring token on disk (bad security!) Given the nature of the request and the very weak security of fingerprints, I think something closer to the first option is the desired solution here. I understand that Network Manager in Intrepid (http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha5#Network%20Manager%200.7) allows system wide settings. Does this sound like an acceptable fix? ** Changed in: thinkfinger (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed -- Thingfinger dosen't unlock keyring https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/276384 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
