[Bug 1998754] Re: [MIR][jammy] oem-somerville-muk-meta

2024-08-26 Thread Kai-Chuan Hsieh
** Description changed:

  [Background]

  Please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MIRTeam/Exceptions/OEM and
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates/OEMMeta for details.

  [Impact]

   1. Upgrade path: Users will be upgrading from a package in the associated
OEM archive, not the Ubuntu archive.
   2. The background and impact of the situation for this change, and it's
impact.

  [Testing]

   1. Test that `ubuntu-drivers list-oem` lists the meta-package on the
relevant hardware
   2. Test that fully installing the meta-package (upgrading to the OEM archive
if relevant) works properly on the hardware
   3. Do an offline install. Boot the system. Run update-manager. Check that an
upgrade to the OEM package is offered and that it completes successfully and
the hardware works properly.

  [Regression Potential]

  Most potential regressions will live in the package set that will be
  installed via dependency of this package, which live in OEM archive
  (outside of Ubuntu) and control by OEM team. OEM team and other
  corresponding team need take responsibility of those dependency
  installed.

  [When switching kernel flavour] Check that the new kernel flavour works
  on the target platform.

  [Availability]
  This is a meta package for https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MIRTeam/Exceptions/OEM
that means the package doesn't exist in Debian or Ubuntu archive yet.
  The source code of the oem-somerville-muk-meta for jammy:
  git clone -b muk-jammy-ubuntu
https://git.launchpad.net/~oem-solutions-engineers/pc-enablement/+git/oem-somerville-projects-meta

  [Rationale]
  We want to improve the hardware support for some Dell platforms.

  [Security]
  No CVE/known security issue.

  [Quality assurance]
  I have used ppa:oem-solutions-engineers/oem-projects-meta to check this
package on some Dell platforms.
  oem-somerville-muk-meta will be upgraded to 22.04ubuntu1 or the later version
from OEM archive.

  [Dependencies]
  It only depends on ubuntu-oem-keyring.

  [Standards compliance]
  This package should have met all requirements of
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MIRTeam/Exceptions/OEM.

  [Maintenance]
  Canonical OEM Enablement Team will take care of the maintenance.

  [Background information]
  Please check https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MIRTeam/Exceptions/OEM for details.

  Please use "oem-metapackage-mir-check" in lp:ubuntu-archive-tools to
  verify this MIR against the reference package in the archive.

[Bug 2077858] [NEW] Fix ethernet performance on JSL and EHL

2024-08-26 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
Sub-optimal ethernet performance on Intel JSL and EHL platform with
Realtek PCIe NIC.

Iperf shows the network throughput can only reach around 75% of

[Fix]
The CPU idle state transition C1 -> C1E -> C0 overhead can be too high,
so disabling C1E to increase the IRQ latency and DMA speed.

[Test]
With the patch applied, iperf shows over 95% of network throughput
consistently.

[Where problems could occur]
Disabling C1E can theoretically increase power consumption slightly.

[Bug 2003161] Re: Fix speaker mute hotkey doesn't work on Dell G16 series

2024-07-31 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
> The issue does not happen on GNOME but libinput still shows the
KEY_MUTE being sent from both devices. Currently working on dynamic
debug

I think KDE needs to handle it better. Mutter (used by gnome-shell) has
mechanism to filter out repeated media key events:
{ MUTE_KEY, "volume-mute", TRUE, SHELL_ACTION_MODE_ALL,
META_KEY_BINDING_IGNORE_AUTOREPEAT },

There's no guarantee where the Mic Mute event comes from, it can be from
either 0d62:3740, dell_wmi, or both.

So this needs to be handled by at userspace.

+  * Try command $ sudo mbimcli -d /dev/cdc-wdm0 -p --compal-query-at-command=AT
   * Output:
     AT
     OK
   * Without the patch it will show
     error: Unknown options --compal-query-at-command=AT

  [ Where problems could occur ]

[Bug 2069235] Re: [needs-packaging] fibocom-pc-services

2024-06-13 Thread Kai-Chuan Hsieh
Feedback from ubuntu-motu.

There is problem about the file application/fibo_ma_service/fibo_ma.

```
It looks like, technically, they're distributing that binary under the GPLv2,
which means that anyone can ask for the source and expect to receive it.
If they relicense that file with, say, the MIT license, then it could go into
Debian non-free (without the modaliases bit, because apparently Debian doesn't
have that?) and then we'd take the Debian package and re-add the modaliases bit
as an Ubuntu-specific diff.
```

[Bug 2068546] Re: Exclude thermald thermal management for Dell Optiplex XE4

2024-06-10 Thread Kai-Chuan Hsieh
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

   * Dell would like to disable thermald thermal management on Dell
- OptiPlex XE4 on focal
+ OptiPlex XE4 for 20.04

   * The reason is that the thermald on focal is too old to support the thermal
policy configured in the BIOS
  , it leads the problem in lp:2064083. However, the platform can rely on EC to
do the thermal management, so that it can omit the issue if thermald is
inactive on the platform.

  [ Test Plan ]

   * Install the package on the target OptiPlex XE4 platform, product sku
  0ACB

   * Run $ systemctl status thermald

   * The status should be inactive

   * Run $ systemctl status thermald on other platforms, the status should
  be as what it was.

  [ Where problems could occur ]

   * The change only takes place on the specified platform, the other
  platforms should work as what it was. If other platforms dmi reports the
  same pattern in sys_vendor and product_sku, the thermald will stop
  working too.

  [ Other Info ]

   * The thermald version after jammy can support the table configured in
  the BIOS correctly, so there is no need to apply the patch to the
  codename >= 22.04.

[Bug 2067579] Re: Webcam not working

2024-06-06 Thread Kai-Chuan Hsieh
Check the $ dkms status to see if the module was recorded by it, and see
if there is source under /usr/src. Follow the dkms manual to remove it.

Also, you can try remove the folder
/lib/modules/6.5.0-1023-oem/updates/dkms/ directly and run $ sudo depmod
-a again. Then do the reboot, to see if the module info gets update.

I don't suggest to install any dkms on certified platform. Because it
will prevent you to enable secure boot if you don't know how to sign it.

[Bug 2067579] Re: Webcam not working

2024-06-05 Thread Kai-Chuan Hsieh
Please check if your system has these two modules.

1. $ modinfo intel_ipu6
The module file is at /lib/modules/6.5.0-1023-oem/ubuntu/ipu6/intel-ipu6.ko

2. $ modinfo intel_vsc
The module file is at /lib/modules/6.5.0-1023-oem/ubuntu/ivsc/intel_vsc.ko

If you don't see it, there might be some package dependency broken on
your PC. Please follow step in #25 to reinstall it.

If you can see it, it is module dependency broken to prevent you to load
it, try $ sudo depmod -a and reboot again.

The easiest way is still to fresh install ubuntu, and let auto popped
update-manager window handle the upgrade for you.

Hello,

I checked your log, the oem-somerville-tentacool-meta should not be
installed on your machine. You should only install oem-somerville-
tentacool-rpl-meta and its dependent packages and packages are
recommneded by it.

The package is called platform meta package which is specified for
different platforms, please don't mixed use them.

Thanks,

[Bug 2067318] [NEW] Hitting Ctrl-C in the dpkg config conflict interactive sub-shell aborts the upgrade

2024-05-27 Thread Kai Groner
Public bug reported:

During an upgrade from 23.10 to 24.04, while investigating a config
conflict in an interactive sub shell I used ^C to discard the current
command in that shell. Instead of the shell receiving the interrupt
signal and responding in the way it normally did, some other process in
the upgrade process received it and aborted the upgrade.

Using ^C to discard the current command in a shell is normal use and
shouldn't result in catastrophic failure of the upgrade.

Some of the upgrade is still running, but nothing is responding to
keyboard input.

Here is the output of the process after I hit ^C:

It appears there are several pseudoterminals in use.

I thought screen used to be used for this, but it doesn't seem to be in
this case. Maybe that's not relevant here, I don't know.

Whatever code is doing this needs to put the outer layer in raw mode to
be able to handle normal interactive use.

[Bug 2064689] [NEW] Fix inaudible HDMI/DP audio on USB-C MST dock

2024-05-02 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
HDMI/DP audio isn't working on Dell's USB-C dock.

[Fix]
Leave Maud/Naud as is, since the hardware programmed the right value
already.

[Test]
HDMI/DP audio always comes out from the USB-C dock after the fix is
applied.

[Where problems could occur]
The commits affects _all_ HDMI/DP audio that connects to Intel GFX. So
all of them are affected hence the regression risk isn't low.

Therefore let the commit sits in OEM kernel first. Stable kernels can
pull in this fix after it's getting thoroughly tested.
